Socio-culturally responsive medical professionalism and ethics education: A curriculum co-creation approach

Medical professionalism and ethics (MPE) are critical components influencing how medical practitioners provide patients with the highest standard of care. As a result, a structured attempt has been undertaken to enhance the content and teaching delivery of the medical professionalism and ethics education (MPEE) in the undergraduate medical curriculum. Guided by Vygotsky's sociocultural learning theory, Harre and Van Langenhove's positioning theory and Taba's principles of curriculum development, a curriculum co-creation project was organized with the aim of developing a socio-culturally responsive MPEE. A total of fifteen medical students agreed to participate in the project where they co-created MPE curriculum with a medical educator over the course of three months. Upon completion of the project, a co-created, socio-culturally responsive MPE curriculum was presented. The thematic analysis revealed positive changes in the participants' attitudes, skills, and behaviors towards co-creating the MPE curriculum. They also reported feeling a sense of fulfilment after having a transformative experience as curriculum co-creators and after receiving positive feedback from the faculty, staff, and other students on the co-created MPE curriculum. The project's success demonstrates the importance of curriculum co-creation as a strategy to promote co-creation efforts among students and educators in developing a socio-culturally responsive curriculum. The project's framework and practical recommendations can be adopted by other medical educators and faculties to encourage students' participation and their role on curriculum development using the co-creation approach.

Evaluating the effectiveness of an online curriculum on caring for transgender and nonbinary patients

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

 It is well established that provider lack of knowledge in the field of transgender and nonbinary health is as ignificant barrier to care and that training in this area is lacking. This study examined how family medicine residents' self-confidence and medical knowledge in providing gender-affirming care changed after completing a novel, online curriculum on transgender and nonbinary care.

METHODS

Thirty-nine family medicine residents were invited to complete the curriculum. Change inself-confidence was determined by the difference in scores on a Likert scale on a pre- and post-survey. Change in medical knowledge was assessed by examining the difference between pre- and post-test scores on a novel multiple-choice examination.

RESULTS

Only 7% of current residents agreed that their current training is adequate in order to provide comprehensive primary care to transgender and nonbinary people. After completion of the curriculum, 100% of participants felt at least somewhat confident providing primary care to transgender and nonbinary people, including hormone therapy. Average medical knowledge post-test scores trended higher than the pre-test results (mean (SD) at pre = 11.2 (1.4) vs post = 14.6 (2.8)).

CONCLUSIONS

An online, self-directed curriculum on caring for transgender and nonbinary patients in the primary care setting, including management of gender-affirming hormone therapy, has the potential to increase confidence and knowledge in this field, decreasing barriers to care for this population.

Assessing the Impact of a Hospice and Palliative Medicine Mentored Clinical Shadowing Experience for First-Year Medical and Dental Students: A Pilot Study

Background: All physicians encounter patients with serious illness. Medical students recognize the value of hospice and palliative medicine (HPM) and desire more knowledge and skills in this area. However, both pre-clinical and clinical HPM content are underrepresented within medical school curricula. Objectives: To conduct a pilot study examining the impact of a novel required HPM clinical experience on pre-clinical medical and dental students' learning through mixed methods evaluation of student responses. Design: Students completed a two-part electronic survey following a half-day HPM mentored clinical shadowing experience (HPM-MCSE) which included an introductory session, a faculty-mentored shadowing experience and a debriefing session. Setting/subjects: 163 first-year students at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, USA in 2022. Measurements: The survey collected demographic information and student responses to both closed-ended (Likert-scale) and open-ended prompts. Data were analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics and qualitatively using constant comparative methodology. Results: 127 medical and dental students responded (78% response rate). Qualitative analysis yielded three overarching themes: acquisition of knowledge about operational dimensions of HPM, acquisition of knowledge about psychosocial dimensions of HPM, and personal impact including an awareness of discordance between expectations and lived experience of HPM practice. Of the 109 students who completed the entire survey, 67% indicated that this experience increased their interest in palliative care and 98% reported an increase in their understanding of how palliative care enhances patient care. Conclusions: Early clinical exposure to HPM for first year students stimulates multi-dimensional learning about HPM and evokes personal reflection about serious illness care.

Examining the Most Impactful Strategies for In-service Preparation: A Systemic Review

INTRODUCTION

Resident performance on the Plastic Surgery In-Service Examination (PSITE) is used as a predictor of success on the American Board of Plastic Surgery Written Examination, as well as resident progression and fellowship applications. However, information specifically addressing strategies on optimal PSITE preparation is lacking in the plastic surgery literature when compared to general surgery. For this reason, we aim to understand if the topic is well-studied and denote effective study strategies and curricular interventions in both fields that can help residents and programs optimize PSITE performance.

METHODS

A literature search including studies from 2012 to 2022 was conducted following PRISMA guidelines in PubMed and EMBASE to identify articles on strategies to improve in-service exam scores for general surgery and plastic surgery. Only studies that reported measurable outcomes in raw score, percentile score, or percent correct were included.

RESULTS

Qualitative analysis of 30 articles revealed 2 categories of interventions: individual study habits and institutional curricular interventions. In general surgery literature, 27 articles examined interventions positively impacting resident ABSITE scores, with 21 studies classified as institutional curricular interventions and 6 articles addressing individual study habits. Themes associated with improved ABSITE performance included mandatory remediation programs, dedicated study time, and problem-based learning interventions. In contrast, only 3 articles in plastic surgery literature discussed interventions associated with improved PSITE scores, all falling under curricular interventions.

CONCLUSION

Unfortunately, the plastic surgery literature lacks concrete evidence on how residents can improve performance. Future research in plastic surgery should replicate successful strategies from general surgery and further investigate optimal preparation strategies for the PSITE. Such endeavors can contribute to improving resident performance and advancing plastic surgery education and patient care.

Twelve tips for including disability education in undergraduate medical education

Disability is a large and growing minority population worldwide. People with disabilities continue to experience health and healthcare disparities. Despite multiple calls to action to provide disability education within undergraduate medical education as a strategy to mitigate ongoing inequities, robust disability education is not routinely provided across medical schools. This article provides twelve tips that any medical school faculty can utilize to integrate meaningful disability education within existing core medical education.

A novel oral medicine-centered interprofessional curricular initiative to promote collaboration and build oral health capacity

INTRODUCTION

Oral physicians should possess knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for functioning in the evolving integrated care systems. Paramount for addressing the existing oral health disparities is also adequate training of non-dental health professionals in the foundations of oral health. We conducted interprofessional oral medicine-centered case conferences to prepare dental students for collaborative care and to increase awareness of non-dental students about the mouth-body connection. Herein, we share our perspective and the students' feedback about this educational program.

METHODS

Students from seven health profession and social work programs attended an interactive, online oral medicine-centered case conference facilitated by an oral medicine faculty and at least one faculty from another profession. Faculty facilitators guided students to identify key points and encouraged team-based care. Anonymous, voluntary online surveys were distributed to participants immediately after each session. Descriptive data tabulated and analyzed.

RESULTS

A total of 151 students participated in conferences between 11/11/2022 and 3/24/2023 and 132 (87%) submitted postexperience surveys. Students agreed that the case conference was applicable to their profession (95%) and meaningful (94%), they learned new information about other professions (94%), they could contribute to discussions (90%), interactions were respectful (99%), and discussions emphasized interprofessional collaboration (96%). Non-dental respondents learned more about oral-systemic link (95%), recognized a broader role for dentists (90%), and agreed with inclusion of more oral health content in their curricula (79%).

CONCLUSION

Oral medicine-centered case conferences provided an effective curricular path for demonstrating oral-systemic connection, promoting meaningful interprofessional collaboration, and building oral health capacity among students of non-dental health professions.

Constructing knowledge: the role of AI in medical learning

The integration of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT into medical education presents potential benefits and challenges. These technologies, aligned with constructivist learning theories, could potentially enhance critical thinking and problem-solving through inquiry-based learning environments. However, the actual impact on educational outcomes and the effectiveness of these tools in fostering learning require further empirical study. This technological shift necessitates a reevaluation of curriculum design and the development of new assessment methodologies to measure its effects accurately. Additionally, the use of LLMs introduces significant ethical concerns, particularly in addressing inherent AI biases to ensure equitable educational access. LLMs may also help reduce global disparities in medical education by providing broader access to contemporary medical knowledge and practices, though their deployment must be managed carefully to truly support the training of competent, ethical medical professionals.

Prevalence and impact of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders in dental students and faculty

OBJECTIVES

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) affect individuals undergoing increased stress, for example, dental professionals. No study to date has compared dental students and faculty in TMD manifestation. This cross-sectional study compared prevalence, risk factors, and impact on daily activities of self-reported TMD signs/symptoms between dental students and faculty at a predoctoral dental school, and between preclinical (first- to second-year) and clinical (third- to fourth-year) students.

METHODS

A REDCap survey was sent to dental students and faculty, assessing TMD signs/symptoms (TMD Symptom Questionnaire), pain intensity (Chronic Graded Pain Scale), jaw function (Jaw Function Limitation Scale), parafunctions (Oral Behavioral Checklist), previous TMD treatments, anxiety/depression symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire), perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale), and sleep quality (RU-SATED Scale). Outcomes were compared between groups using chi-square and t-tests, adjusting for covariates with analyses of covariance (ANCOVA).

RESULTS

Data derived from N = 145 participants (N = 108 students, N = 37 faculty). Dental students reported significantly higher prevalence (90.1% vs. 75.7%, p = 0.020) and greater number of TMD signs/symptoms (5.3 ± 3.5 vs. 3.0 ± 2.7, p < 0.001) compared to faculty. Students reported significantly more parafunctional activities (p = 0.000), jaw-strain episodes (prolonged mouth opening, p = 0.007), higher stress level (p = 0.008), and lower sleep quality (p = 0.002) than faculty. Difference in number of TMD signs/symptoms was maintained after adjusting for stress, sleep quality, and parafunctional/jaw-strain activities. Clinical students utilized significantly more often evidence-based TMD treatment compared to preclinical students.

CONCLUSIONS

High prevalence of self-reported TMD was observed among dental students and faculty, with students reporting higher prevalence and impairment despite working in the same environment. Findings underscore the importance of education on preventive measures early in dental training to address contributing factors and TMD management.

Assessing the presence of sustainability education in the curriculum of medical students and surgical trainees in Africa: A cross-sectional study

Background and Aims

Integrating sustainability principles into medical and surgical curricula raises awareness and empowers future healthcare professionals to adopt sustainable practices, reducing the environmental impact of surgical care. This study aims to assess the presence of sustainability education in African medical schools and surgical residency curricula to inform policymakers and educators in African healthcare systems.

Methods

This cross-sectional study was undertaken through an online survey among medical students and surgical trainees in African countries to describe the presence of sustainability education in surgical training programs and medical curricula across Africa. The results of this survey were reported in accordance with the Checklist for Reporting Results of Internet E-Surveys (CHERRIES).

Results

A total of 141 participants from 17 countries responded to our e-survey, primarily consisting of undergraduate medical students (92.2%, n = 130). Only 9.2% of participants reported familiarity with the concept of sustainability in surgical care, and 60.3% stated that they had yet to receive any education on sustainability. Waste management was the most commonly taught sustainability topic among those who confirmed the presence of sustainability education in their curricula. Additionally, 76% of participants reported not participating in sustainability-related projects during their training.

Conclusion

This study highlights the urgent need for comprehensive integration of sustainability principles in surgical care and identifies barriers, such as a lack of awareness and resources to this integration. Addressing these gaps and implementing the suggested approaches can lead to more environmentally conscious and socially responsible surgical systems in Africa.

Prioritizing Health Literacy Educational Objectives for Pediatric Residents - A Delphi Study

OBJECTIVE

Children of caregivers with limited health literacy are at risk of poorer health outcomes. Thus, health literacy-informed communication tools are critical to achieving a more equitable health system. However, there is no agreement on the health literacy skills pediatric residents should attain. We used Delphi methodology to establish consensus on health literacy objectives to inform development of a pediatric resident curriculum.

METHODS

Our Delphi panel participated in three rounds of anonymous surveys to rank the importance of health literacy objectives in pediatric resident education. Consensus was defined as ≥70% of panelists identifying an objective as essential or 100% agreeing an objective was recommended or essential.

RESULTS

Thirteen pediatric health literacy experts comprised a racially, geographically, and professionally-diverse panel. After three survey rounds, 27 of the initial 65 objectives met consensus. All final objectives aligned with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) core competencies.

CONCLUSIONS

A panel of pediatric health literacy experts established consensus on health literacy objectives specific to pediatric resident training. These prioritized objectives align with ACGME core competencies, as well as evidence-based strategies like teach-back, and newer considerations like addressing organizational health literacy. They should inform future health literacy curricula and assessment within pediatric residency programs.

Even one voice: Teaching legislative advocacy as a core competency in family medicine

Credentialing bodies increasingly focus on advocacy as a competency to be developed by physicians during residency. The skills of advocacy are especially important with the increased attention on social determinants of health, as restrictive state and federal health policy decisions gain widespread attention in the national news media. This movement is reflected in the ACGME's recently revised statement on the training mission of family medicine residencies with the most recent update of milestones, which identifies advocacy as a core competency. Additionally, the major family medicine organizations and governing bodies all similarly identify advocacy as an important professional responsibility for family physicians. Advocacy is a broad term that can be applied across a range of settings and scenarios. For the purposes of this paper we focus primarily on legislative advocacy as a specific area for growing curricular emphasis in family medicine residency programs.

What is the purpose of nurse education (and what should it be)?

Can we take the purpose of nurse education for granted, and, more importantly, should we? That is the issue at stake in this paper. The question of purpose is conspicuously absent in the nursing literature; our aim here is to urge that it not be overlooked by demonstrating its importance to the future of nursing. We approach the question of nurse education's purpose in concrete and speculative terms through two distinct yet interrelated questions: what is the purpose of nurse education? and what should it be? Amidst the complexity and uncertainty of our time, we cast doubt on the adequacy of manualised and regulated approaches-ubiquitous in nurse education-to prepare nurses who can meet the challenges of contemporary practice. We also assert that transgressive approaches to education, as the antithesis of manualisation, reach the same impasse by (over)predetermining what the educational 'output' will be. To move beyond this impasse, we draw on the theory of Gert Biesta and Ron Barnett to contrast cultivation and existential-type education. In so doing, we do not seek to provide 'answers' to nurse education's purpose but, rather, raise the profile of what we believe is a right and proper question for the discipline to grapple with.

Level Up Your Residency: Can a Novel Two-Week Simulation Rotation Really Make a Difference?

INTRODUCTION

This study describes a unique two-week simulation-based medical education (SBME) rotation for transitional year (TY) residents. During the rotation, residents are fully integrated into the simulation team, actively participating in clinically based interprofessional scenarios, procedural techniques, and mixed reality experiences. Residents also created and ran their own simulations while receiving content expert feedback. We evaluated the rotation's effectiveness in preparing TY graduates for their specific advanced residency track.

METHODS

A retrospective survey evaluated the experiences of 11 TY residents who participated in a unique two-week simulation rotation. The survey assessed residents' perceptions of the program's value and skill development, course design, scenario relevance to future practice, and preparedness to develop future scenarios.

RESULTS

Residents (11 out of 12 residents, 92% response rate) overwhelmingly endorsed the simulation rotation (100% positive, 45.45% extremely valuable). The program demonstrably improved core clinical skills (100% reported improvement) and fostered self-efficacy for future practice. Scenario relevance was high (81.82% highly relevant). Collaboration and communication skills showed promise (72.73% positive) while highlighting a potential area for future refinement. Residents unanimously agreed on effective time allocation and the program's value for debriefing skills. Notably, 91% strongly supported residency-specific simulation training.

DISCUSSION

The two-week simulation was perceived by prior TY residents as valuable, with a majority finding the experience highly valuable across multiple survey questions. Residents overwhelmingly expressed a preference for residency-specific training, suggesting future development of specialty-tailored modules and enhanced debriefing sessions. The findings highlight the program's effectiveness and successful implementation into a TY residency curriculum.

Effectiveness of an ultrasound basic cancer training program through on-site training and virtual case discussions in rural Tanzania: a proof-of-concept study

Introduction

Cancer rates are rising in low- and middle-income countries. While point-of-care ultrasound is now available globally and could serve to mitigate against this rise, its use in diagnosing cancers is inconsistent in lower-resourced healthcare contexts. This proof-of-concept study investigates the feasibility of an ultrasound training concept in a low-resource setting. It evaluates whether this educational concept led to improved knowledge and application of ultrasound diagnostics, cancer screening and staging and patient care.

Material and methods

The curriculum was developed through expert exchange and is based on the World Health Organisation's Manual of Diagnostic Ultrasound. It consisted of two didactic components: an on-site training phase across 5 days for a total of 24 hours, and a digital follow-up phase involving the meeting of a bi-weekly tumor board online. The learning objectives of the on-site training were normal imaging and recognition of common pathologies of the abdominal organs, vessels, lymph nodes, female breasts and lungs. The virtual tumour boards met to discuss cases and ultrasound findings, thus aiding continuing professional development after the training sessions had concluded. The face-to-face course component was accompanied by tests given before and after training as well as an evaluation sheet (Likert-scale with 1 = 'completely/very good' and 7 'not at all/very poor').

Results

Of 20 participants from a rural hospital in Tanzania, a total of 16 were included in the analysis (clinical officers n = 6; medical officers n = 10). A significant increase in knowledge (p < 0.01) was measured both in the subjective self-assessment and in the theoretical competence tests. In multivariate linear regression, the status 'medical officers yes' (β = 5.4; p = 0.04) had a significant influence on theory test results at T2. During the 24 virtual tumour board meetings, 28 cases were discussed and a continuous improvement in image acquisition quality was observed.

Conclusion

The ultrasound education concept comes with a sustainable increase in clinical competence and improved oncological ultrasound screening locally. There is potential for the transfer of the concept to other locations, which can be explored in the future.

Mapping the landscape of sleep medicine training across Asia

STUDY OBJECTIVES

This study assessed the current state of sleep medicine accreditation and training in Asia by conducting a comprehensive survey across 29 Asian countries and regions facilitated by the Asian Society of Sleep Medicine (ASSM) to identify existing gaps and provide recommendations for future enhancements.

METHODS

The ASSM Education Task Force Committee designed a survey to gather data on accreditation, education, and training standards in sleep medicine, including information on challenges in enhancing education in the field.

RESULTS

With an 86% (25 countries/regions) response rate, the survey showed that sleep medicine is recognized as an independent specialty in just nine countries/regions (36% of the countries/regions surveyed). Ten countries/regions have established sleep medicine training programs, with Japan and Saudi Arabia offering it as a distinct specialty. Significant disparities in training and accreditation standards were identified, with many countries/regions lacking formalized training and practice guidelines. The survey also revealed that most local sleep societies across Asia support the development of an Asian Sleep Medicine Training Curriculum led by the ASSM. However, several barriers significantly impede the establishment and development of sleep medicine training programs, including the scarcity of trained specialists and technologists and the absence of national accreditation for sleep medicine.

CONCLUSIONS

The survey highlights the need for standardized sleep medicine training and accreditation across Asia. Developing an Asian Sleep Medicine Training Curriculum and promoting ASSM accreditation guidelines are key recommendations. Implementing these strategies is essential for advancing sleep medicine as a widely recognized discipline throughout Asia.

Status quo of interprofessional education for midwifery and medical students in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland

Objectives

The care of women and their families around childbirth requires effective interprofessional collaboration of the midwifery and medical profession. Given the academisation of midwifery, early interaction between students of midwifery and medicine is both necessary and feasible. As there is a lack of comprehensive data on interprofessional education (IPE) for midwifery and medical students at higher education institutions in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (DACH region), the aim was to identify existing IPE activities, and their curricular determination.

Methods

The exploratory study was conducted in the DACH region over three months (Dec. 2022-Feb. 2023). Higher education institutions offering midwifery science and/or medicine were invited to participate in a web-based survey. The questionnaire focused on the structure and curricular implementation of IPE courses, on cooperation, financial support and more.

Results

A total of 58 out of 96 invited institutions (60%) participated in the survey, of which 34 (59%) offered IPE. Eighteen institutions (19%) offered 32 IPE courses for midwifery and medical students through cooperation within faculty (n=8) and between faculties (n=10). Notably, most of these IPE courses (60%) were integrated into the required curriculum of both study programmes. Most IPE courses were offered without financial support (71%).

Conclusion

The current status quo highlighted the existence of numerous IPE offers for midwifery and medical students in the DACH region that warrant further curricular integration of proven and well-established best practice examples to further enhance these initiatives.

Good ideas for teaching: Design and implementation of the communication workshop "me as team member" for third-year medical students

What is the context informing the project?

Effective communication within a medical team is crucial not only because it results in higher job satisfaction and better joint decision-making among team members, but also because, ultimately, it makes for high-quality, patient-centered care. Since the transition to the clinical phase of study poses a challenge for many medical students, the University of Lübeck introduced "Ich im Team" (me as team member), a German-language communication workshop for third-year medical students, in the 2020/21 winter semester.

Why was the project started?

The workshop forms a basis for future collaboration and is meant to strengthen the interpersonal skills needed for working in teams, communicating with patients, and supporting a no-blame culture.

How is the project carried out?

This workshop, which incorporates elements of improvisational theater and coaching, was offered for the first time in 2020/21. Due to the positive evaluations, it has been a required component of the curriculum since the 2021/22 winter semester.

How is the project evaluated?

The students have accepted the workshop very well, which is reflected in the excellent evaluations of it. Furthermore, a research study carried out during the first two times the workshop was conducted showed, among other things, directly positive effects on the ability to work in interprofessional teams and handle mistakes.

Final overall assessment and outlook

The workshop offers students a solid point of entry into the clinical setting and an awareness of their own role on a given team. Covering the content in more depth and the possible inclusion of other study programs are being discussed.

Residents Need a Dynamic Approach to Leadership Education: A Qualitative Study

OBJECTIVE

Leadership is an essential skill for surgeons, but it is not systematically taught in residency. The objective of this study was to explore the current experiences, motivators, and perspectives on leadership training of general surgery residents.

DESIGN/SETTING/PARTICIPANTS

Semi-structured focus groups were conducted with 20 general surgery residents at an academic training program. Six in-person sessions (one for each postgraduate year and research) were recorded, transcribed, and de-identified. Data were inductively coded by 2 independent researchers and analyzed thematically. Discrepancies were discussed and resolved through consensus.

RESULTS

Participants described developing their leadership skills prior to residency through formal (e.g., job and military) and informal (e.g., extracurricular) experiences. Most reported that leadership development during residency occurred informally (e.g., emulating mentors, trial-and-error). Evolving responsibilities and expectations shaped residents' leadership values: junior residents focused on student and task management and adaptation to new teams; mid-level residents emphasized emotional intelligence and delivery of resident feedback; and senior residents stressed team engagement, inspiring the team, and teaching/mentoring. Major transition periods between residency levels were identified as critical times for leadership training as they allow for self-reflection, motivating residents to participate in a leadership curriculum. Employing level appropriate and immediately applicable content during this time would encourage curriculum attendance and prepare residents for new roles.

CONCLUSIONS

There is a lack of formal leadership training in general surgery residency. There is an opportunity to design and implement leadership training that engages surgical residents with level-relevant content and strategies. Transition periods offer optimal timing for maximal curricula uptake.

Instructional strategies and challenges for implementing teledentistry in dental hygiene curricula: A qualitative study

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES

Research has documented the implementation of telecommunications and virtual technology use in health care disciplines to expand accessibility. Despite the current trend of digital innovations in healthcare systems, telehealth technology is not readily adopted in the dental hygiene profession yet. Currently, no standardized educational framework exists in dental hygiene curricula to prepare professionals with the technical skill set and professional knowledge necessary for telehealth applications. The aims and objectives of this research were (1) to investigate existing dental hygiene educators' pedagogical frameworks for incorporating telehealth technology into dental hygiene curricula, (2) explore these educators' instructional strategies for teaching telehealth technology, and (3) examine the theoretical implications and practical outcomes of teaching telehealth technology for professional development and transferrable work-force ready skills.

METHODS

A nine-item, open-ended, semi-structured interview guide was prepared and approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) in January 2023 to qualitatively investigate accredited entry-level dental hygiene programs in the United States. Thematic interpretational analysis was conducted using NVivo software.

RESULTS

A total of 54 of the 328 dental hygiene programs volunteered for participation. Thirteen full-time and part-time dental hygiene educators met inclusion criteria. The core salient themes identified included (a) curriculum mapping, (b) technology integration, (c) professional collaboration, and (d) supplemental skill set.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings provide guidance to dental hygiene programs for bridging the teledentistry knowledge gap in curriculum development. Incorporating telehealth applications into dental hygiene curricula prepares future dental hygienists with the specialized training needed to function as a member of contemporary health care teams addressing access to care.

Understanding Pharmacy Students' Preparedness towards Counseling over Cannabis Use Disorder

The rise in cannabis use prompts significant concerns regarding pharmacy students' abilities to counsel patients over cannabis use disorder. This study aims to understand pharmacy students' preparedness to counsel patients with cannabis use disorder (CUD) and evaluate the relationship between knowledge, attitudes towards medical cannabis (MC) and recreational cannabis (RC), and behavior intention (BI) to counsel over CUD. A cross-sectional survey was administered to pharmacy students. Descriptive analyses of sample characteristics were assessed with the t-test and one-way ANOVA test. Pearson correlation and linear regression were conducted, measuring the strength and direction of relationships. The average scores for knowledge, attitudes towards MC use and RC, and behavioral intention were 81% (SD 16%), 4.13 (SD 0.75), 3.28 (0.80), and 2.74 (1.00). Significant correlations were observed between knowledge-attitudes toward MC, knowledge-attitudes towards RC, and attitudes towards RC-behavioral intentions. Linear regression indicated attitudes towards MC use and RC, academic year, awareness of MC use legality, obtained knowledge, and past patient interaction were significantly associated with behavioral intention on confidence in counseling over CUD. There is a gap in students' behavioral intention to counsel. These findings emphasize the importance of ample preparation that enables student pharmacists to address patient needs related to cannabis use confidently.

Twelve tips for integrating podcasts into medical education curricula

Engagement with medical education podcasts among health professions learners has been increasing steadily over the last several years. Prior '12 Tips' publications have focused on helping medical educators create and publish their own podcasts. However, there is a gap in available resources to help educators incorporate an already existing and growing library of medical education podcasts into their curriculum rather than create their own. In this paper, the authors provide medical educators '12 Tips' on how to integrate podcasts into their teaching sessions grounded in fundamental principles of curriculum development, cognitive science, and accessibility.

Advancing Health Equity Through Artificial Intelligence: An Educational Framework for Preparing Nurses in Clinical Practice and Research

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into health care offers the potential to enhance patient care, improve diagnostic precision, and broaden access to health-care services. Nurses, positioned at the forefront of patient care, play a pivotal role in utilizing AI to foster a more efficient and equitable health-care system. However, to fulfil this role, nurses will require education that prepares them with the necessary skills and knowledge for the effective and ethical application of AI. This article proposes a framework for nurses which includes AI principles, skills, competencies, and curriculum development focused on the practical use of AI, with an emphasis on care that aims to achieve health equity. By adopting this educational framework, nurses will be prepared to make substantial contributions to reducing health disparities and fostering a health-care system that is more efficient and equitable.

Teaching biologics design using molecular modeling and simulations

Teaching chemistry and biology students about biologics design remains challenging despite its increasing importance in pharmaceutical development. Monoclonal antibodies, commonly called mAbs, are the most popular biologics. They have been developed into drugs to treat various diseases in the past decades. Multiple challenges exist for designing proper formulations to stabilize mAbs, such as preventing aggregation and mitigating viscosity. Molecular modeling and simulations can improve pharmaceutical products by examining the interactions between mAbs and other compounds, such as excipients. To introduce students to biopharmaceuticals, eight students at the Stevens Institute of Technology participated in a semester-long course to learn the challenges of pharmaceutical development and different computational skills to study biologics design. The students started with a limited background in this field. Throughout one semester, they were introduced to various literature and software tools for modeling antibodies and studying their interactions with excipients. This paper aims to develop a course structure to be replicated at other universities and institutions to teach biopharmaceutical development to students.

Family Medicine Resident Education About Health Disparities Associated With Incarceration: A CERA Research Study

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

We submitted research questions to the Council of Academic Family Medicine Educational Research Alliance (CERA) to assess the format of family medicine resident education about health disparities associated with incarceration and the perceived efficacy of efforts to prepare graduates for competent care of formerly incarcerated patients in practice. We think this is a universal problem, and current efforts are insufficient.

METHODS

We evaluated data as part of the fall 2022 CERA survey of program directors (PDs). We reviewed descriptive statistics, generated comparative analysis, and reported relational analysis. We analyzed internal structure with principal component analysis and inter-item reliability.

RESULTS

A total of 286 out of 678 (42%) eligible PDs completed the survey. Most respondents felt that educating residents about health disparities associated with incarceration was important and that residents would welcome that education. However, PDs lacked existing curricula. PDs did not think that medical school graduates were well-prepared in this area, and ambivalence existed about whether residency graduates were well-prepared to treat formerly incarcerated patients upon graduation. Comparative analysis revealed differences in responses based on the type of program, the program and community size, and the PD demographics.

CONCLUSIONS

PDs acknowledged the importance of training residents about health disparities associated with incarceration and about care for formerly incarcerated patients in practice. However, they identified a gap between what was currently offered and what is needed to impact perception of resident readiness upon graduation. This training was felt to be most important in university-based programs with 31+ residents in US communities of greater than 150,000 people. We found no difference based on geographic location.

Development of Master Chef: A Curriculum to Promote Nutrition and Mindful Eating among College Students

Research suggests that success in improving undergraduates' diet quality can benefit from a multifaceted approach, incorporating nutrition education, mindful eating, and culinary skill-building. The current study aimed (1) to review the development of Master Chef, a mindful eating curriculum, and (2) assess its feasibility through an online expert review. Expert reviewers were recruited through an online mindful eating course. Survey questions included both Likert-style and open-ended questions. Quantitative survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Two independent researchers coded qualitative data, which then underwent inductive thematic analysis. Reviewers (N = 7) were experts in the fields of nutrition, psychology, and mindful eating. Master Chef's overall feasibility was rated highly. The overall curriculum was perceived positively. However, it was recommended that the program include more mindfulness. Master Chef was identified as a feasible program for improving the health behaviors of college students. Pilot dissemination and analysis will be necessary to assess the program's effectiveness in supporting disease prevention among undergraduates.
