Injection fibrosis in the quadriceps femoris muscle in children

Fifty cases of quadriceps contracture in thirty-seven children were studied. All of the children had had intramuscular injections into the thigh. All were treated by operative elongation of the quadriceps muscles. The results of the operation were good in thirty cases, fair in eleven, and poor in nine.

Enzymatic reactions on thin-layer chromatographic plates. II. Phospholipase A2 hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine and separation of the products on a single plate

A procedure for the phospholipase A2 hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine on a thin-layer chromatographic plate and subsequent separation of the products on the same plate is described. A 0.2-0.8-mg amount of Russell's viper venom (phospholipase A2) in 0.2 ml of 0.005 M calcium chloride solution was applied on a 0.5-mm silica gel G plate as a band over which 2-5 mg of egg phosphatidylcholine in 0.2 ml of diethyl ether containing 5% of methanol was evenly applied. After the reaction had proceeded for 15-20 min in a diethyl ether-saturated chamber at 25 degrees, the plate was developed with chloroform-methanol-water (65:25:4). The bands were identified and their contents extracted. The extent of hydrolysis under different reaction conditions was evaluated from the amount of lysophosphatidylcholine formed. Approximately 74.6% (maximum) conversion was obtained within 15 min at 25 degrees using a substrate to enzyme ratio of 4:1. The acyl group distributions in the 1- and 2-positions of hen egg phosphatidylcholine obtained from the gas-liquid chromatographic analysis of the methyl ester corresponding to the lyso and free fatty acid band agreed with those obtained by the method of Wells and Hanahan. The method is also applicable to phosphatidylethanolamine.

Delayed asthmatic response to inhalant allergen: cantharidine beetle, case report

A case history of an asthmatic patient who developed delayed responses to intradermal and inhalation provocation tests with whole body allergen of a common beetle (cantharidine) is presented. The response was maximal at 48 hr after the test and it took almost a week for complete resolution. Prior administration of sodium cromoglycate failed to inhibit this response, whereas corticosteroid treatment completely inhibited it. An asthmatic response which appears 48 h after inhalation challenge with an insect allergen is a new variety and the mechanism needs study.

Asthma and urticaria during disodium cromoglycate treatment. A case report

A 10-year-old asthmatic boy began to suffer from urticarial rash and moderately severe bronchospasm after 8 weeks' treatment with disodium cromoglycate. Initially, DSCG had helped to control his asthmatic attacks, and steroid therapy could be discontinued. Inhalation provocation test with DSCG aerosol, 4 months after stopping DSCG treatment, showed an immediate-type 1 response and urticaria. A repeat provocation test, under antihistaminic cover , failed to produce similar response. When DSCG was withdrawn, urticaria vanished and the child remained symptom-free. Disodium cromoglycate is regarded as the possible aetiological agent.

Tetracycline asthma--a case report

A mechanic working in the antibiotic capsuling section of a pharmaceutical company developed asthmatic attacks 1 year after starting work. His occupation involved exposure to a variety of chemical agents including tetracycline. He developed immediate weal and flare reaction to the intradermal test and an immediate (type 1) asthmatic response to intradermal, inhalation and oral challenge tests with tetracycline. On leaving the tetracycline plant he became symptom free.

Frequency of sex chromatin in the buccal smear of newborn females and their mothers during first six days after delivery

The frequencies of sex chromatin in the buccal smear of the newborn females and their mothers were low on the first post-partum day and it increased gradually during the second and third day. By the fourth and fifth day it stabilized and the incidence of sex chromatin both in the mothers and the children became similar, although the frequency on the first day was significantly lower in the newborn. The incidences of pyknotic cells in the buccal smears of the newborns and their mothers were highest on day one and these declined rapidly in the following days. The significance of these findings have been discussed.

Excretion of 4-hydroxy-3 methoxy mandelic acid in cases of ulcerative colitis and diarrhoea of nervous origin

Urinary excretion of 4-hydroxy-3 methoxy mandelic acid (VMA) was used as an index of catecholamine activity in 59 cases of ulcerative colitis compared with 59 controls and 18 cases of diarrhoea of nervous origin. No significant differences were observed between cases and controls but the level of VMA excretion was raised in nervous diarrhoea.
