Brachydactyly type E: A report of a family

A family with dominantly inherited short stature, short broad hands and feet, normal facial appearance and normal intelligence is described. Radiographs demonstrated features of brachydactyly type E. A differential diagnosis of brachydactyly is given.

Auditory brainstem responses in perinatal asphyxia

Averaged auditory brainstem responses (ABR) elicited by unfiltered clicks were recorded from 14 asphyxiated neonates with clinical evidence of CNS suppression at 3-17 days of age, and from a group of healthy neonates matched in gestation period and weight. Statistically significant differences were found between the two groups in several ABR parameters and characteristics. In general, longer ABR component latencies and interwave intervals were the rule in the asphyxiated group. Short-term follow-up of the asphyxiated infants suggested that the ABR is sensitive to recovery trends from hypoxic encephalopathy. The results of a 6-month follow-up are also summarized. The results are discussed with regard to the histopathological and experimental information available from current literature.

Clinical and metabolic features of overdosage with Amesec

A 23-year-old woman ingested 2g. amylobarbitone, 10.4g. aminophylline and 2g. ephedrine. She was deeply unconscious, hypothermic, and went on to have supraventricular and ventricular dysrhythmias, convulsions and haematemesis. During the last convulsion she aspirated vomitus and died. The peak plasma concentration of amylobarbitone was 19mg. per l. and those of ephedrine and theophylline were 13 times higher than accepted therapeutic levels. During the course of the poisoning marked hypokalaemia (1.8mmol./l.) and hyperinsulinaemia (greater than 240mU./l.) were found in conjunction with mild hyperglycaemia (9.6mmol./l.) and elevation of free fatty acid levels (1860mumol./l.). The mechanism of these changes is discussed.

Partial trisomy 12p due to t(12;21)pat translocation

Partial trisomy (interchromosomal duplication) of the short arm of chromosome No. 12 was observed in an infant girl with psychomotor retardation, prominent forehead, ptosis of the right eyelid, esotropia/exotropia, flat nose, hypotonia and other anomalies. A comparison of her features with those in five reported cases with a similar chromosomal imbalance shows certain features common to all, but the material is too limited for definitive characterization of a trisomy 12p syndrome.

Vernix caseosa meningitis and laryngeal stridor in an infant with myelomeningocele. Case report

The authors present the case of an infant with laryngeal stridor, apneic spells, and an open lumbar myelomeningocele; granulomatous vernix caseosa meningitis was found at autopsy. The suggest that chemical meningitis which also involved the cranial nerves might be held partly responsible for the laryngeal stridor.
