Abstract
Many different stimuli such as bioactive agents and environmental stresses are known to cause the activation of sphingomyelinase (SMase), which hydrolyzes sphingomyelin to generate ceramide as a second messenger playing a key role in differentiation and apoptosis in various cell types. Here we identified multiple forms of the membrane-associated neutral SMase (N-mSMase) activity in bovine brain. They could be classified into two groups according to extracting agents: group T-mSMase, extracted with 0.2% Triton X-100, and group S-mSMase, extracted with 0.5 M (NH(4))(2)SO(4). Group T-mSMase: alpha, beta, gamma, and delta, which were extensively purified from 40,000-g pellets of bovine brain homogenates by 3,150-, 5,275-, 1,665-, and 2,556-fold over the membrane extracts, respectively, by sequential use of several column chromatographies. On the other hand, S-mSMase was eluted as two active peaks of S-mSMase epsilon and zeta in a phenyl-5PW hydrophobic HPLC column and further purified by 1,119- and 976-fold over 40,000-g pellets of the homogenates, respectively. These highly purified N-mSMase enzyme preparations migrated as several bands on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and showed many different features in biochemical properties such as pH dependence, Mg(2+) requirements, and effects of detergents. Taken together, our data strongly suggest that mammalian brain N-mSMase may exist as multiple forms different in both its chromatographic profiles and biochemical properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A new method to predict neoplastic polyps of the gallbladder using a scoring system based on five endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) variables is presented. METHODS EUS data from patients with gallbladder polyps who were to undergo cholecystectomy were used for the construction of an EUS scoring system in polyps between 5 and 15 mm in diameter (reference group). The EUS scoring system developed from those patients was applied to other patients (validation group). RESULTS In the reference group, size was the most significant predictor of neoplastic polyp. All polyps 5 mm or less in diameter were non-neoplastic and 94% of polyps of greater than 15 mm were neoplastic in the reference group. For polyps between 5 and 15 mm in diameter, the area under the receiver-operating characteristic curves (ROC) plots for the endoscopic scoring system was significantly greater than that under the ROC plots for polyp size alone (p < 0.01). In the validation group, the risk of neoplastic polyp was significantly higher for polyps with a score of 6 or greater compared with those with a score of less than 6 (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Our data show that a score based on five EUS variables identifies those patients at risk of neoplasia when polyps are between 5 and 15 mm in diameter. (Gastrointest Endosc 2000;52:372-9).

Abstract
Intramuscular hemangioma is an uncommon tumor that usually involves an extremity. They rarely occur after the age of 30. We report a case of an intramuscular hemangioma occurring on the back of a 39-year-old man. Histopathologically, the tumor consisted mainly of large vessels between the muscle fibers. Phleboliths were observed in some of the vessel walls.

Abstract
We report the case of a 24-year-old woman with nodular hidradenocarcinoma on the scalp. While histopathology of the tumor showed a circumscribed, lobulated intradermal mass with prominent squamous differentiation, the immunohistochemical study with antibodies to cytokeratins, CAM 5.2 and 19, epithelial membrane antigen, carcinoembryonic antigen, S-100 protein and p53 all demonstrated positivity. These findings confirmed that the tumor was of eccrine sweat gland origin and it was thought to be a nodular hidradenocarcinoma differentiating toward the eccrine duct and/or secretory portions. She was treated with a wide local excision and no recurrence was observed 18 months after excision.

Abstract
Sixty-three biopsy specimens were obtained from the olfactory region of 15 patients with persistent anosmia and 6 patients with normosmia after sinus surgery. Immunohistochemical examination of all specimens with microtubule-associated protein 5 (MAP5) antisera demonstrated olfactory epithelium in 11 of 18 specimens from normosmic patients and in 12 of 45 samples from anosmic patients. There was a significant difference in the proportion of specimens containing olfactory epithelium between the two groups of patients. In normosmic patients, most of the biopsy samples contained normal-appearing olfactory tissue. However, 2 main patterns of histologic findings were noted in the olfactory mucosa of anosmic patients. First, the olfactory receptor cells were remarkably decreased in number. Second, the orderly arrangement of cells characteristic of normal olfactory epithelium was lost, demonstrating a degenerative appearance. These data suggest that olfactory epithelium can be degenerated even in chronic sinusitis and thereafter extensively replaced with respiratory epithelium, resulting in increased sampling error. Moreover, an unimproved olfactory deficit after sinus surgery may be due to the abnormalities observed at the olfactory epithelium level.

Abstract
We investigated the effect of an acidic environment on the radiation-induced G2/M arrest and apoptosis using RKO.C human colorectal cancer cells expressing wild-type p53 and RC10.1 cells, a subline of RKO.C cells deficient in p53 as well as p53+/+ MEFs and p53-/- MEFs (mouse embryonic fibroblasts). The cells were irradiated with 4 Gy or 12 Gy of gamma-rays in pH 7.5 medium or pH 6.6 medium. p53 accentuated the progression of cells from radiation-induced G2/M arrest to apoptosis and the pH 6.6 environment suppressed the progression of cells through G2/M-phase to apoptosis after irradiation. Further analysis indicated that the radiation-induced G2/M arrest was due mainly to G2 arrest in both pH 7.5 and pH 6.6. Therefore, it was concluded that p53 enhances, and an acidic environment suppresses, the exit of cells from radiation-induced G2 arrest by altering cyclin B1-Cdc2 kinase activity.

Abstract
Since GABA and its related enzymes had been determined in beta-cells of pancreas islets, effects of GABA on pancreatic exocrine secretion were investigated in the isolated perfused rat pancreas. GABA, given intra-arterially at concentrations of 3, 10, 30 and 100 microM, did not exert any influence on spontaneous or secretin (12 pM)-induced pancreatic exocrine secretion. However, GABA further elevated cholecystokinin (10 pM)-, gastrin-releasing peptide (100 pM)- or electrical field stimulation-induced pancreatic secretions of fluid and amylase, dose-dependently. The GABA-enhanced CCK-induced pancreatic secretions were completely blocked by bicuculline (10 microM), a GABAA receptor antagonist but not affected by saclofen (10 microM), a GABA(B) receptor antagonist. The enhancing effects of GABA (30 microM) on CCK-induced pancreatic secretions were not changed by tetrodotoxin (1 microM) but partially reduced by cyclo-(7-aminoheptanonyl-Phe-D-Trp-Lys-Thr[BZL]) (10 microM), a somatostatin antagonist. In conclusion, GABA enhances pancreatic exocrine secretion induced by secretagogues, which stimulate enzyme secretion predominantly, via GABA(A) receptors in the rat pancreas. The enhancing effect of GABA is partially mediated by inhibition of islet somatostatin release. GABA does not modify the activity of intrapancreatic neurons.

Abstract
PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis (PRA) using the novel region of the rpoB gene was developed for rapid and precise identification of mycobacteria to the species level. A total of 50 mycobacterial reference strains and 3 related bacterial strains were used to amplify the 360-bp region of rpoB, and the amplified DNAs were subsequently digested with restriction enzymes such as MspI and HaeIII. The results from this study clearly show that most of the mycobacterial species were easily differentiated at the species level by this PRA method. In addition, species with several subtypes, such as Mycobacterium gordonae, M. kansasii, M. celatum, and M. fortuitum, were also differentiated by this PRA method. Subsequently, an algorithm was constructed based on the results, and a blinded test was carried out with more than 260 clinical isolates that had been identified on the basis of conventional tests. Comparison of these two sets of results clearly indicates that this new PRA method based on the rpoB gene is more simple, more rapid, and more accurate than conventional procedures for differentiating mycobacterial species.

Abstract
We investigated the effect of aqueous extract of Perilla frutescens (Labiatae) (PFAE) on the mast cell-mediated immediate-type allergic reactions. PFAE (0.05 to 1 g/kg) dose-dependently inhibited systemic allergic reaction induced by compound 48/80 in rats. PFAE (0.1 and 1 g/kg) also significantly inhibited local allergic reaction activated by anti-DNP IgE. When PFAE was pretreated at the same concentrations with systemic allergic reaction test, the plasma histamine levels were reduced in a dose-dependent manner. PFAE (10(-3) to 1 mg/ml) dose-dependently inhibited the histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells (RPMC) activated by compound 48/80 or anti-DNP IgE. The level of cyclic AMP in RPMC, When PFAE (1 mg/ml) was added, transiently and significantly increased about 4-fold compared with that of basal cells. Moreover, PFAE (0.001 and 0.01 mg/ml) had a significant inhibitory effect on anti-DNP IgE-induced tumor necrosis factor-alpha production. These results indicate that PFAE inhibits mast cell-mediated immediate-type allergic reactions in vivo and in vitro.

Abstract
Cichorium intybus contains two 1beta-hydroxyeudesmanolides, magnolialide and artesin, together with several constituents. Magnolialide inhibits the growth of several tumor cell lines and appears to induce differentiation of human leukemia HL-60 and U-937 cells to monocyte/macrophage-like cells. Another 1beta-hydroxyeudesmanolide, artesin, and other constituents were inactive. The content of magnolialide was shown to be highest in the leaves of Inje cultivar among the cultivars investigated in this study.

Abstract
The process of wound healing at the basement membrane zone of the vocal folds after phonomicrosurgery was investigated. The influence of phonation and the implied optimal period of voice rest were considered. Phonomicrosurgery was performed on both vocal folds of 20 adult dogs. In 10 dogs, the left recurrent laryngeal nerve was simultaneously resected to simulate iatrogenic voice rest; the remaining 10 dogs were allowed to phonate normally. The healing process of the vocal folds of each group was observed at 1, 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks after surgery with immunohistochemical staining and transmission electron microscopy. In the voice rest group, the basement membrane was completely re-formed in 2 weeks, and the "cover" appeared completely rearranged by 8 weeks. The results of the phonation group were characterized by a delayed healing process and basement membrane changes. These results suggest that voice rest of at least 2 weeks after surgery may be beneficial and that vocal hygiene should be maintained for as long as 8 weeks.

Abstract
We screened 42 Korean traditional tea plants to determine the inhibitory effect of acetylcholinesterase and attenuation of toxicity induced by amyloid-beta peptide, which were related to the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The methanolic extract from Artemisia asiatica among tested 42 tea plants, showed the highest inhibitory effect (48%) on acetylcholinesterase in vitro. The methanolic extract was further separated with n-hexane, chloroform, and ethyl acetate of water, in order. The chloroform solubles, which were high in inhibitory effect of acetylcholinesterase, were repeatedly subjected to open column chromatography on silica gel. From the highest inhibitory fraction (78%) on acetylcholinesterase, the single compound was obtained by the Sep-Pak Cartridge (C18: reverse phase column). This compound was found to react positively on Dragendorff's reagent (potassium bismuth iodide), which typically reacted with the alkaloid. This compound was purified by HPLC (mu-bondapack C18 reverse phase column: 3.9 x 150 mm). The IC50 (the concentration of 50% enzyme inhibition) value of this compound was 23 micrograms/ml and the inhibitory pattern on acetylcholinesterase was mixed with competitive/non-competitive type. We examined the effects of this compound on toxicity induced by A beta (25-35) in rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cells. Pretreatment of the PC12 cells for 2 h with an alkaloid of Artemisia asiatica (1200 microg/ml) reduced the toxicity induced by A beta. This study demonstrated that an alkaloid of Artemisia asiatica, which was metabolized to small molecule in digestive tract and then could pass through the blood-brain barrier, appeared to be an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor with a blocker of neurotoxicity induced by A beta in human brain causing Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract
In order to investigate the significance of preferred conformations of the saccharide for the steric orientation and recognition of glycosphingolipids at the membrane surface, the conformational free energy calculations were carried out on the asialo-GM1 [GA1; beta-D-Gal (1-->3) beta-D-GalNac(1-->4) beta-D-Gal(1-->4) beta-D-Glc-O-ceramide) using a new program CONCARB (CONformational study program for CARBohydrate) in the unhydrated and hydrated states. The overall backbone conformational of GA1 appears to be extended with a little bent at the glycosidic II-III linkage, in which two pyranose rings of Gal(IV)-GalNAc-(III) moiety orient approximately perpendicular to those of Gal(II)-Glc(I) moiety. This is consistent with the structures deduced from high-sensitivity differential scanning calorimetry experiments and the nmr study on GA1. The calculated glycosidic torsion angles of the lowest free energy conformation of GA1 in the hydrated state are in accord with the structures of relevant oligosaccharides deduced from nmr experiments and hard sphere exoanomeric calculations. A comparison of the values of glycosidic torsion angles phi and psi of GA1 and its constituent oligosaccharides indicates that the overall backbone conformation of each oligosaccharide is retained when the oligosaccharide chain becomes longer. This implies that the short-range interactions between the nearest-neighbored saccharides are of significant importance in stabilizing the overall backbone conformation of GA1 in both the unhydrated and hydrated states. The different orientation and hydrogen bonds of hydroxymethyl and hydroxyl groups from one oligosaccharide to another suggest that the medium- and long-range interactions are also of consequence. Hydration seems to affect significantly the confirmation of these groups, but not to perturb remarkably the overall backbone conformation of GA1.

Abstract
We conducted a pilot study to evaluate telemedicine for patients with schizophrenia. The telemedicine system was connected over the ordinary telephone network at 33 kbit/s. A computer-based patient record was used to view patient summaries and to allow nursing notes to be entered at the patient's home. Fifteen patients with schizophrenia were assessed over the telemedicine system and 15 patients were assessed face to face, using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). Our low-bandwidth telemedicine system appeared to be as reliable as higher-bandwidth ISDN systems. In addition, the patients' acceptance of the telemedicine interview, in terms of comfort, ease of self-expression, quality of interpersonal relationship and usefulness, was good in most cases. The only factors significantly affecting the patients' level of acceptance of their particular type of interview were the assessment type (i.e. whether the patient had had a telemedicine assessment or not) and their BPRS score. Since the system was of low cost and was easy to interface with a notebook computer, it could be used support other home-health nursing services.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgical approaches to single ventricle variants include staged, fenestrated, and completed Fontan operations. This study compares outcomes with these modifications of the Fontan operation at a single center. METHODS Preoperative risk factors and operative results were analyzed by multivariate techniques in 129 patients undergoing modified Fontan operations since March 1988. RESULTS Overall early and late mortality was 5.4% and 0.8%, respectively. Before 1993, completed Fontan operation using right atrial to pulmonary artery anastomosis without fenestration was performed in the majority of patients (44 of 58; 76%). During this period, 10 of 17 patients at high risk had completed Fontan with three takedowns. In 1994, the staged hemi-Fontan and modified Fontan with a lateral tunnel anastomosis and with or without small fenestration (2.5 to 4 mm) were introduced. The majority of patients at high risk during this period underwent hemi-Fontan followed by fenestrated Fontan with no takedowns. Late atrial dysrhythmias occurred in 6 patients (4.7%), generally with larger fenestrations or right atrial to pulmonary anastomoses. Three patients (2.3%) had a stroke, 2 with large (> or = 4 mm) fenestrations. Of 38 fenestrations, 32 (84%) closed spontaneously by 1 year. No protein-losing enteropathy occurred. Most patients (118 of 121) were in New York Heart Association class I/II 4.5 years postoperatively. By multivariate analysis, only Down's syndrome (p < 0.001) predicted early mortality, whereas both Down's syndrome and a systemic right ventricle decreased late survival (p < 0.006). CONCLUSIONS Proper selection of patients for modifications of the Fontan procedure resulted in excellent early and late survival with a low incidence of atrial dysrhythmia and stroke. Midterm functional outcomes were excellent.

Abstract
Detailed information on how an epithelial differentiation occurred in the developing eustachian tube and middle ear would be helpful in understanding both normal physiology and pathology of the tubotympanum. This study was undertaken to establish patterns of laminin and E-cadherin in the embryonic mouse eustachian tube and middle ear by use of immunohistochemistry at a stage when epithelial differentiation is taking place. This study was also designed to clarify the role of the middle ear mesenchyme. During the development of the eustachian tube, relatively high immunoreactivity to laminin was observed in the epithelium at gestational days 16 and 17, when the developments of ciliated and secretory cells were first observed. At the time of birth, in contrast to epithelium of the eustachian tube, epithelium of the middle ear cavity showed predominant expression of laminin and E-cadherin. These findings suggest that the expressions of laminin and E-cadherin may be correlated with maturation of the epithelium in the eustachian tube and middle ear and that the epithelial differentiation of the developing murine eustachian tube and middle ear may be controlled by epithelial-mesenchymal interaction and cell-to-cell interaction.

Abstract
Detailed information on how an epithelial differentiation occurred in the developing eustachian tube and middle ear would be helpful in understanding both normal physiology and pathology of the tubotympanum. This study was undertaken to establish patterns of laminin and E-cadherin in the embryonic mouse eustachian tube and middle ear by use of immunohistochemistry at a stage when epithelial differentiation is taking place. This study was also designed to clarify the role of the middle ear mesenchyme. During the development of the eustachian tube, relatively high immunoreactivity to laminin was observed in the epithelium at gestational days 16 and 17, when the developments of ciliated and secretory cells were first observed. At the time of birth, in contrast to epithelium of the eustachian tube, epithelium of the middle ear cavity showed predominant expression of laminin and E-cadherin. These findings suggest that the expressions of laminin and E-cadherin may be correlated with maturation of the epithelium in the eustachian tube and middle ear and that the epithelial differentiation of the developing murine eustachian tube and middle ear may be controlled by epithelial-mesenchymal interaction and cell-to-cell interaction.

Abstract
Primary malignant bone tumors of the proximal humerus have traditionally been treated by forequarter amputation. However, with the increased interest in limb salvage operations, efforts have been made to improve reconstructive surgery and some methods have become available for tumor control and preservation of a useful distal limb. This report describes three reconstructive techniques used for reconstruction of the humerus following primary tumor excision. We followed 11 patients treated by reconstructive surgery following tumor excision for primary malignant and aggressive benign bone tumors in the proximal humerus. The average follow-up period was 35.6 months. The histologic diagnosis included osteosarcoma (9), chondrosarcoma (1) and giant cell tumor (1). The options for reconstructive surgery following tumor excision were six prosthetic arthroplasties with low heat treated autobone, four arthroplasties with Ender nail and bone cement, and one arthroplasty with custom-made tumor prosthesis. We performed a retrospective analysis regarding functional status, as well as local recurrence, distant metastasis and complication. The functional status at final follow-up averaged 16 points (53.3%) overall: 17 points (56.7%) in the six prosthetic arthroplasties with low heat treated autobone; 15 points (50.0%) in two of four arthroplasties with Ender nail and bone cement (the two others died); and 16 points (53.3%) in the one arthroplasty with custom-made tumor prosthesis. Local recurrence was not observed in any of the cases. The complications noted were one nonunion between reimplanted, low heat treated autobone and the normal distal humerus and two metal failures. Each of these techniques for reconstructive surgery resulted in a relatively good outcome, although somewhat better results were found in the case of prosthetic arthroplasty with low heat treated autobone.

Abstract
The Mongolian gerbil is a well-known animal model for induction of aural cholesteatomas. This animal model is useful for studying changes in the keratinizing epithelium. It is not known whether keratin accumulation can increase the proliferative activity of the keratinizing epithelium in tympanic membrane and meatal skin. In this study, we investigated the proliferative activity of the epidermis in induced aural cholesteatoma at various stages and in different areas of the tympanic membrane and meatal skin in normal gerbils. Anti-5-bromo-2- deoxyuridine (BrdU) was injected intraperitoneally to detect the proliferative activity of keratinizing epithelium. Immunohistochemistry with monoclonal BrdU antibody in the normal gerbil showed intense immunolabelled keratinocytes at the handle of malleus, and the superior parts of pars tensa and pars flaccida. Also, mitotic activity in the deep meatal skin was more active than in the lateral meatal skin. The induced aural cholesteatoma showed more active proliferation centre of the epithelial cell than eardrum and external ear canal of the normal gerbil. These observations suggest that the accumulation of the keratin debris might induce changes of the cellular proliferation in the external auditory meatus.

Abstract
For the elucidation of the antimutagenic and cytotoxic principles from the stem bark of Kalopanax pictus, seven isolated components of this crude drug were tested in the Ames test and the MTT test. Hederagenin and its monodesmosides, kalopanaxsaponin A and I in addition to its bisdesmosides, kalopanaxsaponin B and H, showed potent antimutagenic activities against aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). However, they had no inhibitory effects on mutagenicity induced by the direct mutagen, N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG). This suggested that hederagenin glycosides might effectively prevent the metabolic activation of AFB1 or scavenge the electrophilic intermediate capable of inducing mutation. Hederagenin was found to be an essential moiety for the exhibition of antimutagenicity. Moreover, hederagenin and its 3-O-glycosides were found to be cytotoxic on various tumor cell lines, P-388, L-1210, U-937, HL-60, SNU-5 and HepG2, while 3,28-di-O-glycosides of hederagenin were not cytotoxic. Hence, hederagenin and its 3-O-glycosides could be suitable for cancer treatment chemopreventive drugs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS The mucin-hypersecreting bile duct tumor, which closely resembles an intraductal papillary mucinous tumor (IPMT) of the pancreas, is rare, and its clinical features are not well known. We report our experience of nine patients with this type of tumor, and analyze the data in order to elucidate its clinicopathologic characteristics. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between 1995 and 1998, nine consecutive patients (four men, five women; mean age 54) who were diagnosed as having a mucin-hypersecreting bile duct tumor were enrolled in this study. RESULTS Recent or previous attacks of biliary pain and acute cholangitis were reported by most of the patients. Characteristics included a widely open ampulla of Vater with extrusion of mucin, and a diffuse dilated intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile duct with amorphous filling defects on cholangiogram. On cholangioscopic examination, a papillary mass or minute mucosal lesion was found in the dilated bile duct containing thick viscid mucin. Nine patients were referred for an operation, and curative resection was performed in eight of them. Using histologic examination, well differentiated adenocarcinoma in the background of benign hyperplasia and adenoma was documented in all patients except one, who showed pure adenoma. CONCLUSION The mucin-hypersecreting bile duct tumor can be characterized by a striking homology with IPMT of the pancreas in clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features.

Abstract
A novel type of bioreactor was successfully developed for the production of taxol and its precursors by culturing cells of Taxus cuspidata (Japanese yew) on a pilot-scale. Rapidly growing cell lines were selected from callus cultures derived from immature embryos of yew. The cells were inoculated in 20-l capacity bioreactors of different types to test the growth performance. The models of small-scale bioreactors incorporated in this study included a balloon-type bubble bioreactor (BTBB), a bubble-column bioreactor (BCB), a BCB with a split-plate internal loop, a BCB with a concentric draught-tube internal loop, a BCB with a fluidized bed bioreactor, and two different models of stirred tank reactors. Among the reactors, BTBB appeared to be the most efficient in promoting cell growth. The doubling time of cell growth in BTBB was 12 days with a 30% inoculation cell density. The optimum time for medium replacement or feeding was 12-15 days after inoculation as determined by monitoring both the levels of sugars and medium conductivity. When yew tree cells were grown in different sizes (100-500-l) of BTBBs, more than 70% cell viability was recorded at the time of harvest. The growth pattern of the cells in the pilot-scale BTBB appeared to be the same as that of cells in the 20-l bioreactors. Approximately 3 mg/l of taxol and 74 mg/l total taxanes were obtained after 27 days of culture.

Abstract
The distribution and morphology of neurons containing three calcium-binding proteins, calbindin D28K, calretinin, and parvalbumin in the adult rabbit visual cortex were studied. The calcium-binding proteins were identified using antibody immunocytochemistry. Calbindin D28K-immunoreactive (IR) neurons were located throughout the cortical layers with the highest density in layer V. However, calbindin D28K-IR neurons were rarely encountered in layer I. Calretinin-IR neurons were mainly located in layers II and III. Considerably lower densities of calretinin-IR neurons were observed in the other layers. Parvalbumin-IR neurons were predominantly located in layers III, IV, V, and VI. In layers I and II, parvalbumin-IR neurons were only rarely seen. The majority of the calbindin D28K-IR neurons were stellate, round or oval cells with multipolar dendrites. The majority of calretinin-IR neurons were vertical fusiform cells with long processes traveling perpendicularly to the pial surface. The morphology of the majority of parvalbumin-IR neurons was similar to that of calbindin D28K: stellate, round or oval with multipolar dendrites. These results indicate that these three different calcium-binding proteins are contained in specific layers and cells in the rabbit visual cortex.

Abstract
Effects of intrapancreatic gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP)-containing neurons on secretin-induced pancreatic secretion were investigated in the totally isolated perfused rat pancreas. Electrical field stimulation (EFS) increased secretin (12 pM)-induced pancreatic secretions of fluid and amylase. EFS induced a twofold increase in GRP concentration in portal effluent, which was completely inhibited by tetrodotoxin but not modified by atropine. An anti-GRP antiserum inhibited the EFS-enhanced secretin-induced secretions of fluid and amylase by 12 and 43%, respectively, whereas a simultaneous infusion of the antiserum and atropine completely abolished them. Exogenous GRP dose-dependently increased the secretin-induced pancreatic secretion with an additive effect on fluid secretion and a potentiating effect on amylase secretion, which was not affected by atropine. In conclusion, excitation by EFS of GRPergic neurons in the isolated rat pancreas results in the release of GRP, which exerts an additive effect on fluid secretion and a potentiating effect on amylase secretion stimulated by secretin. The release and action of GRP in the rat pancreas are independent of cholinergic tone.
