Abstract
The parity violation parameters A(b) and A(c) of the Zb(b) and Zc(c) couplings have been measured directly, using the polar angle dependence of the polarized cross sections at the Z(0) pole. Bottom and charmed hadrons were tagged via their semileptonic decays. Both the electron and muon analyses take advantage of new multivariate techniques to increase the analyzing power. Based on the 1993-1998 SLD sample of 550,000 Z(0) decays produced with highly polarized electron beams, we measure A(b) = 0.919+/-0.030(stat)+/-0.024(syst), and A(c) = 0.583+/-0.055(stat)+/-0.055(syst).

Abstract
The branching fractions of the exclusive decays B0-->K(*0)gamma and B+-->K(*+)gamma are measured from a sample of (22.74+/-0.36)x10(6) BB decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. We find B (B0-->K(*0)gamma) = [4.23+/-0.40(stat)+/-0.22(syst)]x10(-5), B(B+-->K(*+)gamma) = [3.83+/-0.62(stat)+/-0.22(syst)]x10(-5) and constrain the CP-violating charge asymmetry to be -0.170<A(CP)(B-->K(*)gamma)<0.082 at 90% C.L.

Abstract
We present a limit on the branching fraction for the decay B0-->gammagamma using data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric energy e+e- collider. Based on the observation of one event in the signal region, out of a sample of 21.3x10(6) e+e--->Upsilon(4S)-->BB decays, we establish an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(B0-->gammagamma)<1.7x10(-6) at the 90% confidence level. This result substantially improves upon existing limits.

Abstract
We present a measurement of the decay amplitudes in B-->J/psiK*(892) channels using 20.7 fb(-1) of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at PEP-II. We measure a P-wave fraction R(perpendicular) = (16.0 +/- 3.2 +/- 1.4)% and a longitudinal polarization fraction (59.7 +/- 2.8 +/- 2.4)%. The measurement of a relative phase that is neither 0 nor pi, phi = 2.50 +/- 0.20 +/-0.08 radians, favors a departure from the factorization hypothesis. Although the decay B-->/psiK(pi) proceeds mainly via K*(892), there is also evidence for K2*(1430) and K(pi) S-wave contributions.

Abstract
Evolution of central respiratory chemosensitivity has been linked traditionally to the need for carbon dioxide regulation that accompanied the evolution of air breathing in terresterial animals. We examined the validity of this linkage by investigating the possibility of central chemoreception in air breathing fish that diverged from the amphibian lineage long before the appearance of terrestriality. We showed that the isolated brainstem preparation of the long nose gar (Lepisosteus osseus) produces a putative motor pattern for lung ventilation, which is responsive to CO(2). These findings, together with more inferential evidence, suggest an association between air breathing and central chemosensitivity in aquatic animals that spans the major branches in vertebrate phylogeny. Furthermore, developmental observations in tadpoles suggest that the neural substrates for central chemoreception exist in proximity to that for rhythm generation. We postulate that a primitive ancestral CPG, sensitive to CO(2) is conserved and is evidenced in the intrinsic coupling of respiratory CPG and central chemoreception in modern tetrapods.

Abstract
We present the results of searches for B decays to charmless two-body final states containing eta(') or omega mesons, based on 20.7 fb(-1) of data collected with the BABAR detector. We find the branching fractions Beta(B(+)-->eta(')K(+)) = (70+/-8+/-5) x 10(-6), Beta(B(0)-->eta(')K(0)) = (42(+13)(-11) +/- 4) x 10(-6), and Beta(B(+)-->omega pi(+)) = (6.6(+2.1)(-1.8) +/- 0.7) x 10(-6), where the first error quoted is statistical and the second is systematic. We give measurements of four additional modes for which the 90% confidence level upper limits are Beta(B(+)-->eta(')pi(+)) < 12 x 10(-6), Beta(B(+)-->omega K(+)) < 4 x 10(-6), Beta(B(0)-->omega K(0)) < 13 x 10(-6), and Beta(B(0)-->omega pi(0)) < 3 x 10(-6).

Abstract
The B(0) and B(+) meson lifetimes have been measured in e(+)e(-) annihilation data collected in 1999 and 2000 with the BABAR detector at center-of-mass energies near the Upsilon(4S) resonance. Events are selected in which one B meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic final state while the second B meson is reconstructed inclusively. A combined fit to the B(0) and the B(+) decay time difference distributions yields tau(B(0)) = 1.546+/-0.032(stat)+/-0.022(syst) ps, tau(B(+)) = 1.673+/-0.032(stat)+/-0.023(syst) ps, and tau(B(+))/tau(B(0)) = 1.082+/-0.026(stat)+/-0.012(syst).

Abstract
Spike frequency was recorded in the nerve of the isolated superfused first gill arch of the bullfrog larva, Rana catesbeiana and the response to different superfusate PO2 was evaluated. In the metamorphic tadpole, spike frequency increased significantly when the superfusate PO2 was decreased (mean +/- SEM): 8.5 +/- 1.6 Hz at 650 Torr, 11.7 +/- 1.9 Hz at 140 Torr, 13.3 +/- 1.8 Hz at 65 Torr, 14.8 +/- 2.4 Hz at 0 Torr (ANOVA, p = 0.0002). The O2 sensitive chemoreceptor stimulants NaCN and almitrine also increased the spike frequency. This study demonstrates the presence of O2 sensitive chemoreceptors in the first gill arch of the tadpole.

Abstract
The production of J/psi mesons in continuum e(+)e(-) annihilations has been studied with the BABAR detector at energies near the Upsilon(4S) resonance. The mesons are distinguished from J/psi production in B decays through their center-of-mass momentum and energy. We measure the cross section e(+)e(-)-->J/psi X to be 2.52+/-0.21+/-0.21 pb. We set a 90% C.L. upper limit on the branching fraction for direct Upsilon(4S)-->J/psi X decays at 4.7 x 10(-4).

Abstract
We have observed the decays B--> phiK and phiK(*) in a sample of over 45 million B mesons collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II collider. The measured branching fractions are B(B+--> phiK+) = (7.7(+1.6)(-1.4)+/-0.8)x10(-6), B(B0--> phiK0) = (8.1(+3.1)(-2.5)+/-0.8)x10(-6), B(B+--> phiK(*+)) = (9.7(+4.2)(-3.4)+/-1.7)x10(-6), and B(B0--> phiK(*0)) = (8.7(+2.5)(-2.1)+/-1.1)x10(-6). We also report the upper limit B(B+--> phipi(+))<1.4x10(-6) ( 90% C.L.).

Abstract
We present measurements, based on a sample of approximately 23x10(6) BB pairs, of the branching fractions and a search for CP-violating charge asymmetries in charmless hadronic decays of B mesons into two-body final states of kaons and pions. We find the branching fractions B(B0-->pi(+)pi(-)) = (4.1+/-1.0+/-0.7)x10(-6), B(B0-->K+pi(-)) = (16.7+/-1.6+/-1.3)x10(-6), B(B+-->K+pi(0)) = (10.8(+2.1)(-1.9)+/-1.0)x10(-6), B(B+-->K0pi(+)) = (18.2(+3.3)(-3.0)+/-2.0)x10(-6), B(B0-->K0pi(0)) = (8.2(+3.1)(-2.7)+/-1.2)x10(-6). We also report 90% confidence level upper limits for B meson decays to the pi(+)pi(0), K+K-, and K0K+ final states. In addition, charge asymmetries have been found to be consistent with zero, where the statistical precision is in the range of +/-0.10 to +/-0.18, depending on the decay mode.

Abstract
This review assembles data from three bodies of literature (bacterial genetics, plastid biogenesis and parasitology) that seldom have much direct cross-talk. After overcoming terminological complications to sort out microbial nifS from sufS genes, we connect a bacterial operon, recently found to be involved in iron metabolism, the formation of [Fe-S] clusters and oxidative stress to a potentially important gene (sufB) carried on the degenerate plastid genome of malaria and related parasites.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine whether: 1. oxytocin receptor antagonists influence spontaneous contractions of myometrium from humans, non-human primates and rodents (in vitro), and 2. vasopressin V1a receptor antagonism is important for inhibition of spontaneous contractions in human myometrium. DESIGN In vitro pharmacology of spontaneous contractions of myometrium from humans and animals. SETTING The research laboratories of a university department of obstetrics and gynaecology and a pharmaceutical industry research centre. INTERVENTIONS Samples of human myometrium were obtained at caesarean section. Tissue strips were suspended in organ baths for isometric force recording. Cumulative concentration effect curves to a selective oxytocin receptor antagonist (L-371,257) and a mixed oxytocin/vasopressin V1a receptor antagonist (atosiban) were obtained. The effect of L-371,257 was also determined in myometrium from non-pregnant rats and marmosets. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The inhibition of spontaneous myometrial contractions in vitro. RESULTS L-371,257 and atosiban significantly inhibited spontaneous activity of human myometrium in a concentration-related manner (P < 0.05), although the effect was more pronounced with L-371,257. Spontaneous contractions of myometrium from non-pregnant rats and marmosets were also inhibited by L-371,257 (atosiban was not tested). CONCLUSIONS Spontaneous contractions of myometrium from humans, marmosets and rats are, at least in part, dependent on oxytocin receptor activity, in vitro. L-371,257 and atosiban may be inverse agonists. Selective non-peptide oxytocin receptor antagonists may be effective tocolytics.

Abstract
We present an updated measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. This result uses an additional sample of Upsilon(4S) decays collected in 2001, bringing the data available to 32 x 10(6) BB macro pairs. We select events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the standard model is proportional to sin2 beta, is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result sin2 beta = 0.59+/-0.14(stat)+/-0.05(syst) establishes CP violation in the B(0) meson system. We also determine absolute value of lambda = 0.93+/-0.09(stat)+/-0.03(syst), consistent with no direct CP violation.

Abstract
The rat working heart-brain stem preparation (WHBP) is an in situ preparation having many of the advantages associated with in vitro preparations while retaining cardiovascular response functionality and an eupnoeic respiratory motor pattern. The preparation is perfused arterially with an aqueous medium having a much lower oxygen-carrying capacity than blood. To evaluate the efficacy of the artificial perfusion in providing adequate gas exchange within the brain stem, we used polarographic PO(2) and pH microelectrodes to determine the tissue PO(2) and pH of the medulla oblongata at various depths. When the perfusate was equilibrated with 5% CO(2) and 95% O(2), average tissue PO(2) was 294 Torr and no hypoxic areas were encountered. Tissue pH was remarkably uniform throughout the tissue, and on average was only 0.04 +/- 0.02 pH units more acidic than that of the perfusate. Increasing the PCO(2) of the perfusate increased tissue PO(2) and decreased arterial resistance. Decreasing perfusate PCO(2) (while keeping pH constant) decreased tissue PO(2) and reduced the respiratory activity. These results suggest that arterial PCO(2), independent of arterial pH, is an essential variable in determining both respiratory drive and cerebrovascular perfusion. We conclude that the medulla of the WHBP is oxygenated and within a physiological pH, which accounts for the eupneic pattern of respiratory motor activity it generates. Furthermore, this preparation may be a useful model for exploring mechanisms of central chemoreception as well as the dynamics of the cerebral vasculature responses following changes in blood gases.

Abstract
Controversy still exists concerning the strategy of targeting so-called supranormal levels of oxygen delivery as a means of improving outcome from high-risk surgery. The pathogenesis of postoperative morbidity is not fully defined; however, it seems likely that the gastrointestinal tract plays a pivotal role, particularly as a source of endotoxin, which is a potent stimulator of the inflammatory response. Delayed recovery of gastrointestinal function also is a major contributor to postoperative morbidity. Demonstration of a significant reduction in gut ischemia, endotoxemia, postoperative inflammatory response, and morbidity in a high-risk general surgical population as a result of perioperative hemodynamic optimization would be a highly worthwhile study.

Abstract
Many animals are regarded as relatively sedentary and specialized in marginal parts of their geographical distributions. They are expected to be slow at colonizing new habitats. Despite this, the cool margins of many species' distributions have expanded rapidly in association with recent climate warming. We examined four insect species that have expanded their geographical ranges in Britain over the past 20 years. Here we report that two butterfly species have increased the variety of habitat types that they can colonize, and that two bush cricket species show increased fractions of longer-winged (dispersive) individuals in recently founded populations. Both ecological and evolutionary processes are probably responsible for these changes. Increased habitat breadth and dispersal tendencies have resulted in about 3- to 15-fold increases in expansion rates, allowing these insects to cross habitat disjunctions that would have represented major or complete barriers to dispersal before the expansions started. The emergence of dispersive phenotypes will increase the speed at which species invade new environments, and probably underlies the responses of many species to both past and future climate change.

Abstract
Lungs are the characteristic air-filled organs (AO) of the Polypteriformes, lungfish and tetrapods, whereas the swimbladder is ancestral in all other bony fish. Lungs are paired ventral derivatives of the pharynx posterior to the gills. Their respiratory blood supply is the sixth branchial artery and the venous outflow enters the heart separately from systemic and portal blood at the sinus venosus (Polypteriformes) or the atrium (lungfish), or is delivered to a separate left atrium (tetrapods). The swimbladder, on the other hand, is unpaired, and arises dorsally from the posterior pharynx. It is employed in breathing in Ginglymodi (gars), Halecomorphi (bowfin) and in basal teleosts. In most cases, its respiratory blood supply is homologous to that of the lung, but the vein drains to the cardinal veins. Separate intercardiac channels for oxygenated and deoxygenated blood are lacking. The question of the homology of lungs and swimbladders and of breathing mechanisms remains open. On the whole, air ventilatory mechanisms in the actinopterygian lineage are similar among different groups, including Polypteriformes, but are distinct from those of lungfish and tetrapods. However, there is extreme variation within this apparent dichotomy. Furthermore, the possible separate origin of air breathing in actinopterygian and 'sarcopterygian' lines is in conflict with the postulated much more ancient origin of vertebrate air-breathing organs. New studies on the isolated brainstem preparation of the gar (Lepisosteus osseus) show a pattern of efferent activity associated with a glottal opening that is remarkably similar to that seen in the in-vitro brainstem preparation of frogs and tadpoles. Given the complete lack of evidence for AO in chondrichthyans, and the isolated position of placoderms for which buoyancy organs of uncertain homology have been demonstrated, it is likely that homologous pharyngeal AO arose in the ancestors of early bony fish, and was pre-dated by behavioral mechanisms for surface (water) breathing. The primitive AO may have been the posterior gill pouches or even the modified gills themselves, served by the sixth branchial artery. Further development of the dorsal part may have led to the respiratory swimbladder, whereas the paired ventral parts evolved into lungs.

Abstract
The impact of cognitive-behavioral interventions was assessed for 28 low-moderate risk and 20 high-risk sexual offenders on conditional release to the Greater Toronto Area. Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS--T. Hogue, 1994) for sexual offenders was used to rate clinical and motivational elements of treatment taken from reports written at pretreatment, posttreatment, and after 3 months of community follow-up. Results indicated that both groups of offenders benefited from treatment, although low-moderate risk offenders showed consistently better results on all measures. Performance along nonrelapse prevention related dimensions increased from pretreatment to posttreatment and remained relatively steady in the community. Relapse prevention related treatment components showed a steady increase from pretreatment throughout follow-up in the community for low-moderate risk offenders, but not for high-risk offenders. Both groups improved substantially in level of motivation from pretreatment to posttreatment; however, only those in the low-moderate risk group maintained their motivation levels once released to the community. These results are discussed with respect to the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral treatment of sexual offenders.

Abstract
We present measurements of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to several CP eigenstates. The measurement uses a data sample of 23x10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BbarB decays collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we find events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a CP eigenstate containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the standard model is proportional to sin2beta, is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result is sin2beta = 0.34+/-0.20 (stat)+/-0.05 (syst).

Abstract
The Phylum Apicomplexa comprises thousands of obligate intracellular parasites, some of which cause serious disease in man and other animals. Though not photosynthetic, some of them, including the malaria parasites (Plasmodium spp.) and the causative organism of Toxoplasmosis, Toxoplasma gondii, possess a remnant plastid partially determined by a highly derived residual genome encoded in 35 kb DNA. The genetic maps of the plastid genomes of these two organisms are extremely similar in nucleotide sequence, gene function and gene order. However, a study using pulsed field gel electrophoresis and electron microscopy has shown that in contrast to the malarial version, only a minority of the plastid DNA of Toxoplasma occurs as circular 35 kb molecules. The majority consists of a precise oligomeric series of linear tandem arrays of the genome, each oligomer terminating at the same site in the genetic map, i.e. in the centre of a large inverted repeat (IR) which encodes duplicated tRNA and rRNA genes. This overall topology strongly suggests that replication occurs by a rolling circle mechanism initiating at the centre of the IR, which is also the site at which the linear tails of the rolling circles are processed to yield the oligomers. A model is proposed which accounts for the quantitative structure of the molecular population. It is relevant that a somewhat similar structure has been reported for at least three land plant chloroplast genomes.

Abstract
We present final measurements of the Z boson-lepton coupling asymmetry parameters A(e), A(mu), and A(tau) with the complete sample of polarized Z bosons collected by the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. From the left-right production and decay polar angle asymmetries in leptonic Z decays we measure A(e) = 0.1544+/-0.0060, A(mu) = 0.142+/-0.015, and A(tau) = 0.136+/-0.015. Combined with our left-right asymmetry measured from hadronic decays, we find A(e) = 0.1516+/-0.0021. Assuming lepton universality, we obtain a combined effective weak mixing angle of sin (2)theta(eff)(W) = 0.230 98+/-0.000 26.

Abstract
We have made the first direct symmetry tests in the decays of polarized Z0 bosons into fully identified bbg states, collected in the SLD experiment at SLAC. We searched for evidence of parity violation at the bbg vertex by studying the asymmetries in the b-quark polar- and azimuthal-angle distributions, and for evidence of T-odd, CP-even or CP-odd, final-state interactions by measuring angular correlations between the three-jet plane and the Z0 polarization. We found results consistent with standard model expectations and set 95% C. limits on anomalous contributions.

Abstract
ycf24 is a well conserved gene found in all major groups of bacteria, as well as on red algal plastid genomes and the vestigal plastid genome of apicomplexan pathogens like the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum (ORF470). Some database annotations describe Ycf24 as an ABC transporter subunit, but we find the level of significance is low. To investigate ycf24's function we disrupted it in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp., strain PCC6803 which has a multi-copy genome. This showed ycf24 is essential, partial loss producing a terminal phenotype of chlorosis, reduced cell size, loss of DNA, and a striking arrest in cytokinesis. Attempts to disrupt the single copy of ycf24 in E. coli failed to give stable transformants. When Ycf24 was over-expressed in E. coli as a soluble fusion protein, it localized mostly as a band on either side of the nucleoid and nucleoid partitioning was aberrant. We propose the relict plastid organelle of apicomplexans retains its capacity for protein synthesis because Ycf24 is essential.

Abstract
While little is known of the origin of air-breathing in vertebrates, primitive air breathers can be found among extant lobe-finned (Sarcopterygii) and ray-finned (Actinopterygii) fish. The descendents of Sarcopterygii, the tetrapods, generate lung ventilation using a central pattern generator, the activity of which is modulated by central and peripheral CO(2)/H(+) chemoreception. Air-breathing in Actinopterygii, in contrast, has been considered a ‘reflexive’ behaviour with little evidence for central CO(2)/H(+) respiratory chemoreceptors. Here, we describe experiments using an in vitro brainstem preparation of a primitive air-breathing actinopterygian, the longnose gar Lepisosteus osseus. Our data suggest (i) that gill and air-breathing motor patterns can be produced autonomously by the isolated brainstem, and (ii) that the frequency of the air-breathing motor pattern is increased by hypercarbia. These results are the first evidence consistent with the presence of an air-breathing central pattern generator with central CO(2)/H(+) respiratory chemosensitivity in any primitive actinopterygian fish. We speculate that the origin of the central neuronal controller for air-breathing preceded the divergence of the sarcopterygian and actinopterygian lineages and dates back to a common air-breathing ancestor.
