Abstract
Multi-wavelength continuous-wave (CW) Raman lasers in a laser diode pumped Yb:YAG/Nd3+:YVO4 microchip Raman laser have been demonstrated for the first time to our best knowledge. The multi-wavelength laser of the first Stokes radiation around 1.08 μm has been achieved with a Raman shift of 261 cm-1 for a-cut Nd:YVO4 crystal corresponding to the fundamental wavelength at 1.05 μm. Multi-wavelength laser operation simultaneously around 1.05 and 1.08 μm has been achieved under the incident pump power between 1.5 and 1.7 W. Multi-wavelength Raman laser with frequency separation of 1 THz around 1.08 μm has been obtained when the incident pump power is higher than 1.7 W. The maximum Raman laser output power of 260 mW at 1.08 μm is obtained and the corresponding optical-to-optical conversion efficiency is 4.2%. Elliptically polarized fundamental laser and linearly polarized Raman laser were observed in an Yb:YAG/Nd:YVO4 CW microchip Raman laser. The experimental results of linearly polarized, multi-wavelength Yb:YAG/Nd:YVO4 CW microchip Raman laser with adjustable frequency separation provide a novel approach for developing potential compact laser sources for Terahertz generation.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) for the treatment of vulvar lichen sclerosus (VLS) and compare its effectiveness with that of clobetasol propionate. Four sessions of topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) were administered at 2-week intervals (n = 20). Clobetasol propionate (0.05%) was used daily for 8 weeks (n = 20). The rate of complete response in the PDT group (14/20) was double that of the clobetasol propionate group (7/20) (p < 0.05, 2 = 4.912). Horizontal visual analogue scores indicated that PDT was more effective than clobetasol propionate. Pain intensity numeric rating scale values for PDT were between 3.05 and 4.45. One month after the final session of PDT, only one patient relapsed and all 7 patients in clobetasol propionate group relapsed. ALA-PDT is a well-tolerated and effective option for the treatment of VLS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore whether the ABL(Δexon7) and ABL(35INS) spliceosome contributed to TKIs resistance. METHODS Screening ABL(Δexon7) and ABL(35INS) in 74 normal people and 76 CML patients (53 patients in remission and 23 patients with TKIs resistance) by using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis combined with cloning sequencing. RESULTS A novel spliceosome ABL(Δexon7+ 35INS) (ABL(Δexon7) and ABL(3)5INS existed at the same time) was identified and the mutation was detected in 8 (10.8%) of 74 normal people, 4 (7.5%) of 53 remission patients and 2 (8.7%) of 23 resistant patients. While 47 (63.5%) cases expressed ABL(Δexon7) and 8 (10.8% ) cases expressed ABL(35INS) in 74 healthy people, 30 (56.6%) cases expressed ABL(Δexon7) and 5 (9.4% ) cases expressed ABL(35INS) in 53 remission patients, 12 (52.2%) cases expressed ABL(Δexon7) and 3(13.0%) cases expressed ABL(35INS) in 23 resistant patients. Three kinds of spliceosome in all groups had no statistical difference. CONCLUSION ABL(Δexon7+ 35INS), ABL(Δexon7) and ABL(35INS) may be not uncommon in ABL gene and were unrelated to resistance in CML with TKIs treatment. ABL(35INS) were often accompanying with exon 7 deletion.

Abstract
Objectives: To identify independent factors of sphincter preserving surgery, and to evaluated whether preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) improves the sphincter preservation rate for lower rectal cancers. Methods: A total of 541 consecutive patients who underwent curative surgery for locally advanced rectal cancer (cT3-4Nx or cTxN+ ) within 6 cm of the anal verge with or without neoadjuvant CRT in Department of Colorectal Surgery, Union Hospital, Fujian Medical University between September 2000 and September 2013 were reviewed. Of these, 333 patients underwent surgery alone (Non-CRT group) and 208 patients also received preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT group). Clinical data were retrospectively reviewed to determine the factors influencing sphincter preservation, and to evaluate sphincter preservation rate according to tumor height over 1-cm intervals. The categorical variables were compared using χ2 test and Fisher exact test. Continuous variables were compared using t test. Logistic regression was used to identify factors influencing sphincter preservation. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was constructed, and Youden's index was calculated to evaluate the predictive abilities of factors. Results: Multivariate analysis indicated that the independent factors influencing sphincter preservation were tumor height (OR=5.867, 95% CI: 4.155 to 8.285, P=0.000), pathological T stage (OR=0.688, 95% CI: 0.462 to 1.025, P=0.066), CRT (OR=2.088, 95% CI: 0.971 to 4.492, P=0.060) and histopathological type (OR=0.288, 95% CI: 0.136 to 0.611, P=0.001). The results of ROC analysis showed that the cut-off points for factors affecting sphincter preservation were as follows: (1) tumor height prior to CRT higher than 4.5 cm, (2) not mucinous or signet ring adenocarcinoma, (3) pathological T stage higher than T3, (4) had received preoperative CRT. In an analysis according to tumor height, the sphincter preservation rate was higher in CRT group only when tumor was located in 3.0 to 3.9 cm and 4.0 to 4.9 cm from the annal verge (3.0 to 3.9 cm, 59.4% vs. 2.8%, χ2=26.138, P=0.000; 4.0 to 4.9 cm, 76.9% vs. 37.9%, χ2=10.563, P=0.001). Conclusions: There is a large increased rate of sphincter preservation when patients meet the following conditions: (1) tumor height prior to CRT higher than 4.5 cm, (2) not mucinous or signet ring adenocarcinoma, (3)pathological T stage higher than T3, (4) had received preoperative CRT. Only when tumors are between 3 and 5 cm from the anal verge, CRT could increase the rate of anal sphincter preservation.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the prognostic factors of postoperative incisional surgical site infections (I-SSI) for colorectal cancer. Methods: Clinical data of 2 385 colorectal cancer patients undergoing resection by the same surgical team in Department of Colon and Rectum Surgery, Fujian Medical University Union Hospital from January 2000 to February 2014 was analyzed retrospectively. There were 1 421 male and 964 female patients, with a mean age of (59±13) years. Univariate analysis and multivariate Logistic regression analysis were performed for independent prognostic factors of I-SSI. Results: The I-SSI occurred in 77 patients (3.23%). The results of univariate analysis showed that there were statistical differences in body mass index (t=-3.356), operation time (t=-3.609), length of incision (t=-5.492), radical operation (χ2=8.963), laparoscopic surgery (χ2=25.884), combined evisceration (χ2=6.349) and intraoperative blood infusion (χ2=4.176) between two groups (all P<0.05) . The results of multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that independent prognostic factors of I-SSI were identified to be body mass index (OR=1.087, 95%CI: 1.023 to 1.155, P=0.007), operation time (OR=1.007, 95%CI: 1.002 to 1.012, P=0.006), preoperative chemoradiotherapy (OR=2.434, 95%CI: 1.099 to 5.393, P=0.028) and combined evisceration (OR=2.596, 95%CI: 1.060 to 6.357, P=0.037). The independent protective prognostic factor of I-SSI was identified to be the laparoscopic surgery (OR=0.386, 95%CI: 0.170 to 0.877, P=0.023). Conclusions: Body mass index, operation time, preoperative chemoradiotherapy and combined evisceration are identified to be independent prognostic factors for I-SSI. High-risk patients should receive individualized perioperative intervention. Nevertheless, the laparoscopic surgery can decrease the incidence of I-SSI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the influences of genetic and environmental factors on smoking behavior, smoking cessation and onset age of smoking less than 20 years in male twin adults. METHODS A face-to-face questionnaire was conducted to collect data from 6 458 pair male twins aged ≥25 years registered in 9 provinces(municipality)in China. The heritability of three smoking related behaviors were calculated by using structural equation models. RESULTS The ACE models were the best models of the three dimensions of smoking, i.e. smoking behavior, smoking cessation and onset age of smoking less than 20 years for male twins, and the corresponding heritability of these behaviors were 0.26(0.19-0.34), 0.27(0.19-0.37)and 0.05(0.00-0.14), respectively. When adjusted for area and age, the heritability of these three behaviors were 0.26(0.19-0.34), 0.31(0.00-0.74)and 0.05(0.00-0.14), respectively. CONCLUSIONS All the three smoking related behaviors were affected by genetic factors, but environment factors had more effect on them. For smoking cessation, the heritability was highest, but the influence of environmental factors was lowest. Meanwhile, for onset age of smoking, the influence of environmental factors was highest.

Abstract
Powdery mildew (Pm) is one of the most harmful diseases in wheat. Three Pm-resistance genes, Pm3, Pm21, and Pm8, have been cloned but most Pm3/Pm8 alleles have lost their resistance to Pm in hexaploid wheat. In this study, a new Pm3 homolog gene (TmPm3) was isolated from Triticum monococcum L. using a homology-based cloning strategy, being the first report of a functional Pm3 homolog gene from a diploid wheat species. The transient expression of TmPm3 in leaf epidermal cells showed that over-expressed TmPm3 could significantly inhibit the penetration of Blumeria graminis f. sp tritici conidia spores and the formation of haustoria. Sequence analysis of Pm3 alleles shed new light on the evolution of Pm3 genes, providing a better understanding of the molecular basis of disease resistance. This study also suggested that homology-based cloning of resistance genes is a feasible method for the isolation of functional resistance genes from wheat germplasm.

Abstract
β-Arrestins are multifunctional proteins originally identified as negative adaptors of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Emerging evidence has also indicated that β-arrestins can activate signaling pathways independent of GPCR activation. This study was to elucidate the role of β-arrestins in diabetic nephropathy (DN) and hypothesized that β-arrestins contribute to diabetic renal injury by mediating podocyte autophagic process. We first found that both β-arrestin-1 and β-arrestin-2 were upregulated in the kidney from streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice, diabetic db/db mice and kidney biopsies from diabetic patients. We further revealed that either β-arrestin-1 or β-arrestin-2 deficiency (Arrb1−/− or Arrb2−/−) ameliorated renal injury in diabetic mice. In vitro, we observed that podocytes increased both β-arrestin-1 and β-arrestin-2 expression levels under hyperglycemia condition and further demonstrated that β-arrestin-1 and β-arrestin-2 shared common mechanisms to suppress podocyte autophagy by negative regulation of ATG12–ATG5 conjugation. Collectively, this study for the first time demonstrates that β-arrestin-1 and β-arrestin-2 mediate podocyte autophagic activity, indicating that β-arrestins are critical components of signal transduction pathways that link renal injury to reduce autophagy in DN. Modulation of these pathways may be an innovative therapeutic strategy for treating patients with DN.

Abstract
Dysregulation of miRNAs is associated with cancer development and progression. For example, aberrant expression of miR-874 has been found in some types of cancer. However, miR-874 expression and its clinical significance in colorectal cancer (CRC) have not yet been explored. The aim of the current study was to explore the effects of miR-874 in CRC tumorigenesis and development. Quantitative reverse-transcription PCR was performed to evaluate miR-874 levels in CRC cell lines and in 135 pairs of primary human CRC specimens and adjacent noncancerous tissues. The association of miR-874 expression with clinicopathological factors and prognosis was also analyzed. Furthermore, the effects of miR-874 on the biological behavior of CRC cells in vitro were investigated. Our results revealed that miR-874 expression was significantly downregulated in CRC cancer tissues and cell lines. Decreased miR-874 expression was significantly associated with larger tumor size, deeper invasion depth, and advanced TNM stage in vivo. Additionally, low miR-874 expression in CRC was an independent predictor of poor survival. Moreover, overexpression of miR-874 inhibited cell proliferation, invasion, and migration, and promoted cell apoptosis of the SW620 CRC cell line in vitro. Taken together, these findings indicate that miR-874 may act as a tumor suppressor in CRC, and may serve as a novel therapeutic target for miR-based therapy.

Abstract
Aim. To evaluate the influence of interval between neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NCRT) and surgery on oncological outcome. Methods. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Embase databases for publications reporting oncological outcomes of patients following rectal cancer surgery performed at different NCRT-surgery intervals. Relative risk (RR) of pathological complete response (pCR) among different intervals was pooled. Results. Fifteen retrospective cohort studies representing 4431 patients met the inclusion criteria. There was a significantly increased rate of pCR in patients treated with surgery followed 7 or 8 weeks later (RR, 1.45; 95% CI, 1.18-1.78; and P < 0.01 and RR, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.15-1.92; and P = 0.002, resp.). There is no consistent evidence of improved local control or overall survival with longer or shorter intervals. Conclusion. Performing surgery 7-8 weeks after the end of NCRT results in the highest chance of achieving pCR. For candidates of abdominoperineal resection before NCRT, these data support implementation of prolonging the interval after NCRT to optimize the chances of pCR and perhaps add to the possibility of ultimate organ preservation.

Abstract
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a multifactorial disorder involving both acquired and genetic risk factors. The common genetic factors in Western populations have been studied and reported for several decades, while studies on Asian populations are relatively scarce. Evidence suggests that the prevalence and genetic risk factors of VTE vary significantly among ethnic populations. In this review, we summarize the common genetic risk factors of VTE in both Western and Asian populations. In addition to the development of DNA sequencing technology, genome-wide association studies have many advantages and are becoming more important in identifying new genetic risk factors and susceptible loci. They can therefore help in the prediction and prevention of VTE.

Abstract
SQUAMOSA promoter-binding protein-like (SPL) proteins play crucial roles in plant growth, development, and responses to environmental stressors. The peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is a globally important oil crop. In this study, we cloned the full-length cDNA of 15 SPLs in the peanut by transcriptome sequencing and rapid amplification of cDNA ends, and analyzed their genomic DNA sequences. cDNA lengths varied significantly, from 369 to 3102 bp. The SBP domain of the peanut SPL proteins was highly conserved compared to SPLs in other plant species. Based on their sequence similarity to SPLs from other plant species, the peanut SPLs could be grouped into five subgroups. In each subgroup, lengths of individual genes, conserved motif numbers, and distribution patterns were similar. Seven of the SPLs were predicted to be targets of miR156. The SPLs were ubiquitously expressed in the roots, leaves, flowers, gynophores, and seeds, with different expression levels and accumulation patterns. Significant differences in the expression of most of the SPLs were observed between juvenile and adult leaves, suggesting that they are involved in developmental regulation. Dynamic changes occurred in transcript levels at stage 1 (aerial grown green gynophores), stage 2 (gynophores buried in soil for about three days), and stage 3 (gynophores buried in soil for about nine days with enlarged pods). Possible roles that these genes play in peanut pod initiation are discussed.

We aim to evaluate the efficacy and safety of paclitaxel-based doublet intravenous chemotherapy (IVC) with and without intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPC) as the first-line treatment in advanced gastric cancer (AGC) with peritoneal metastasis (PM). 173 AGC patients with peritoneal metastasis were enrolled. All patients received paclitaxel-based doublet systemic chemotherapy Among them, 117 patients received IVC+IPC and 56 patients received IVC alone. The median OS of patients in the IP+ group was longer than the IP- group, however, there was no statistical difference between the two groups (11.1 months vs. 10.1 months, P = 0.072). In the multivariate analysis, the ECOG PS and IVC±IPC were independent prognostic factors for PFS and OS. There were no significant differences in the incidence of grade 3 and 4 toxicity between the IP+(DDP), IP+(FUDR) and IP- groups. Paclitaxel-based doublet regimens combining with IPC is effective, feasible and tolerated in AGC patients with PM.

Abstract
To determine the relationship between the expression of phosphatase and tensin homologue (PTEN) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) and the clinical outcome of cetuximab-containing chemotherapy. A total of 158 consecutive mCRC patients with wild-type KRAS status who received chemotherapy with or without cetuximab, and for whom tumor tissue was available, were enrolled. The EGFR and PTEN expression was determined by immunohistochemistry (IHC). A total of 158 mCRC patients with wild-type KRAS status were enrolled in the study; 51 patients received chemotherapy combined with cetuximab, 107 patients received chemotherapy alone. Patients who received chemotherapy combined with cetuximab had longer overall survival (OS) compared with patients who received chemotherapy alone. High EGFR expression was detected in 60 patients (38.0%), while normal PTEN expression was detected in 60 patients (59.5%). The PTEN status was significantly related with the histological grade. For patients who received chemotherapy combined with cetuximab the median OS of patients with high-expression of EGFR was longer than the OS of patients with low EGRF expression; 25.0 versus 19.0 months, P = 0.002. For patient with normal PTEN the median OS were longer than the median OS for patients with loss of PTEN; 24.0 versus 19.0 months, P = 0.026. The overall response rate (ORR) had a borderline association with EGFR and PTEN expression (P = 0.055 and 0.048, respectively). In a multivariate analysis, ECOG PS, EGFR status, chemotherapy ± cetuximab, and the interaction of EGFR or PTEN and chemotherapy ± cetuximab were independent prognostic factors for OS. Our findings show that chemotherapy combined with cetuximab demonstrated encouraging antitumor activity for mCRC patients with wild-type KRAS status. Especially, those who have high EGFR expression or normal PTEN expression were more likely to benefit from such a treatment strategy. Subsequent studies in clinical trial cohorts will be required to confirm the clinical utility of these markers.

Abstract
To maximize the islet isolation yield for successful islet transplantation, the key task has been to identify an ideal pancreas donor. Since implementation of the islet donor score in donor selection, we have consistently obtained higher islet yields and transplantation rates. In this study, we tested whether assessing donor height as an independent variable in combination with the donor score could improve the pancreas donor selection. Donor and islet isolation information (n = 22) were collected and studied between 2011 and 2012. Pearson correlation analysis was used in statistical analysis. Donor height as an independent variable was significantly correlated to the weight of the pancreas, pre-Islet Equivalents (pre-IEQ), post-IEQ, and IDS (P < .05). When donor with height of 179 cm ± 3 was selected in combination with IDS > 80, the clinical islet transplantation rate reached 80%.

Abstract
Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the most common form of head and neck cancer. Annually, more than half a million individuals are diagnosed with this devastating disease, with increasing incidence in Europe and Southeast Asia. The diagnosis of HNSCC often occurs in late stages of the disease and is characterized by manifestation of a high-grade primary tumor and/or lymph node metastasis, precluding timely management of this deadly cancer. Recently, HNSCC cancer stem cells have emerged as an important factor for cancer initiation and maintenance of tumor bulk. Like normal stem cells, cancer stem cells can undergo self-renewal and differentiation. This unique trait allows for maintenance of the cancer stem cell pool and facilitates differentiation into heterogeneous neoplastic progeny when necessary. Recent studies have suggested coexistence of different cancer stem cell populations within a tumor mass, where the tumor initiation and metastasis properties of these cancer stem cells can be uncoupled. Cancer stem cells also possess resistant phenotypes that evade standard chemotherapy and radiotherapy, resulting in tumor relapse. Therefore, understanding distinctive pathways relating to cancer stem cells will provide insight into early diagnosis and treatment of HNSCC. In this review, we highlight current advances in identifying cancer stem cells, detail the interactions of these cells with the immune system within the tumor niche, and discuss the potential use of immunotherapy in managing HNSCC.

Abstract
To uncover the molecular mechanisms underlying the intestinal barrier integrity, this study determined whether the rapamycin (RAPA)-sensitive target of rapamycin complex 1 (TORC1) pathway was involved in this process. Three groups of 4-day-old male chicks were randomly subjected to one of the following treatments for 6 days: high-dose RAPA [a specific inhibitor of TORC1; an intraperitoneal injection of 1.0 mg/kg body weight (BW), once daily at 09:00 hours], low-dose RAPA (0.4 mg/kg BW) and RAPA vehicle (control). Results showed that the RAPA treatment increased mortality, while decreasing villus height (p < 0.01), claudin 1 expression, content of immunoglobulin A (IgA), extent of TORC1 phosphorylation (p < 0.05), ratio of villus height to crypt depth (p < 0.01), and population of IgA-positive B cells in intestinal mucosa, particularly for the jejunum. Some aspects of these responses were dose dependent and appeared to result from weight loss. Together, RAPA exerts the expected inhibition of small intestinal development and IgA production in birds, suggesting the important role of TORC1 in gut barrier integrity.

Abstract
We explored the molecular mechanism of the regulation of vacuolar-type-H+-ATPase B1 (VHAB1) in elvers in the response to salinity. The full-length cDNA of VHAB1 in Anguilla marmorata (designated as AmVHAB1), which was 1741 base pairs (bp) in length, was found to encompass a 1512-bp open reading frame encoding a polypeptide with 503 amino acids (55.9 kDa), an 83-bp 5'-untranslated region, and a 146-bp 3'-untranslated region. The mRNA and protein expression levels of AmVHAB1 in the gill were evaluated at different time points (0, 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h, and 15 days) during the exposure to various salinity levels (0, 10, and 25‰). The results indicated that the expression levels of AmVHAB1 mRNA in the gill significantly increased and reached the highest level at 1 h exposure in the brackish water (BW, 10‰) group and at 6 h exposure in the seawater (SW, 25‰) group. The salinity level affected the relative expression level of AmVHAB1 mRNA in the gill, which was increased by approximately 44-fold in the SW group when compared with that in fresh water. Immunoblotting analysis showed that VHA expression was significantly higher in the BW and SW groups, with the highest expression level was detected at 96 h exposure. We found that the AmVHAB1 gene in elvers from A. marmorata plays an important role in the adaptation to seawater.

Abstract
Ultrafast electron probes are powerful tools, complementary to x-ray free-electron lasers, used to study structural dynamics in material, chemical, and biological sciences. High brightness, relativistic electron beams with femtosecond pulse duration can resolve details of the dynamic processes on atomic time and length scales. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory recently launched the Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (UED) and microscopy Initiative aiming at developing the next generation ultrafast electron scattering instruments. As the first stage of the Initiative, a mega-electron-volt (MeV) UED system has been constructed and commissioned to serve ultrafast science experiments and instrumentation development. The system operates at 120-Hz repetition rate with outstanding performance. In this paper, we report on the SLAC MeV UED system and its performance, including the reciprocal space resolution, temporal resolution, and machine stability.

Abstract
Genetic mutations in microRNA gene can alter expression, which may interact to increase the risk of developing various diseases, including hepatitis B. However, published results are inconclusive or ambiguous. The aim of this review and meta-analysis is to more precisely estimate the association between polymorphisms in microRNA genes and hepatitis B risk. A digital search was performed of the MEDLINE EMBASE, CNKI, and CBM databases to identify relevant articles published up to February 18, 2014. Ten case-control studies were included, with a total of 6042 patients with hepatitis B and 6834 healthy controls. Nine single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the miRNA gene were examined, including miR-34b/c [rs4938723 (T>C)], miR-196a-2 [rs11614913 (C>T)], miR-146a [rs2910164 (G>C)], miR-499 [rs3746444 (T>C)], miR-122 [rs3783553 (ins/del)], miR-149 [rs2292832 (C>T)], miR-106b-25 [rs999885 (A>G)], miR-let-7c [rs6147150 (ins/del)], and miR-218 [rs11134527 (A>G)]. The meta-analysis results indicated that the miR-196a-2*T, miR-122*del, miR-106b-25*A, and miR-let-7c*del alleles/carriers increase the risk of hepatitis B among the Asian population. However, the miR-146a, miR- 499, miR-149, miR-218, and miR-34b/c polymorphisms may not be linked with the risk of hepatitis B. Further investigations are warranted to determine the exact associations between microRNA mutations and hepatitis B susceptibility.

Abstract
We speculate that cortical reactions evoked by swallowing activity may be abnormal in patients with central infarction with dysphagia. The present study aimed to detect functional imaging features of cerebral cortex in central dysphagia patients by using blood oxygen level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging techniques. The results showed that when normal controls swallowed, primary motor cortex (BA4), insula (BA13), premotor cortex (BA6/8), supramarginal gyrus (BA40), and anterior cingulate cortex (BA24/32) were activated, and that the size of the activated areas were larger in the left hemisphere compared with the right. In recurrent cerebral infarction patients with central dysphagia, BA4, BA13, BA40 and BA6/8 areas were activated, while the degree of activation in BA24/32 was decreased. Additionally, more areas were activated, including posterior cingulate cortex (BA23/31), visual association cortex (BA18/19), primary auditory cortex (BA41) and parahippocampal cortex (BA36). Somatosensory association cortex (BA7) and left cerebellum in patients with recurrent cerebral infarction with central dysphagia were also activated. Experimental findings suggest that the cerebral cortex has obvious hemisphere lateralization in response to swallowing, and patients with recurrent cerebral infarction with central dysphagia show compensatory recombination phenomena of neurological functions. In rehabilitative treatment, using the favorite food of patients can stimulate swallowing through visual, auditory, and other nerve conduction pathways, thus promoting compensatory recombination of the central cortex functions.

Abstract
Cathelicidin is a host defense peptide with multiple innate immunity-related functions. Recent findings indicate that cathelicidin is frequently dysregulated in human cancers where it plays a paradoxical yet dominant role in the regulation of tumor malignancy. In this review, the regulation of malignant phenotypes by cathelicidin in relation to the activation of its receptors and intracellular signaling is discussed.

Abstract
We investigated the clinical efficacy of adoptive cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cell and dendritic cell (DC) therapy plus intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for treating elderly patients with esophageal carcinoma (EC). In total, 68 elderly patients with EC were randomized to receive IMRT plus DC-CIK immunotherapy (study group, N = 34) or IMRT only (control group, N = 34). Clinical efficacy, immune function, toxicity and side effects, and life quality were evaluated after treatment. The efficacy rate was significantly higher in the study group than in the control group. Remarkable increases were noted for quality of life and immune function in the study group relative to the control group. Regarding toxicity and side effects, compared with the control group, the study group displayed a higher fever rate, a lower incidence rate of bone marrow suppression, and a similar rate of digestive tract reactions. DC-CIK immunotherapy plus IMRT exhibited better short-term efficacy than IMRT alone in elderly patients with EC. The therapy could improve patients'quality of life and immune function, decrease bone marrow suppression, and lengthen survival time.
