Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficacy and treatment-related toxicity of accelerated hyperfractionation field-involved re-irradiation combined with concurrent capecitabine chemotherapy for locally recurrent and irresectable rectal cancer (LRIRC). METHODS 72 patients with LRIRC who underwent the treatment were studied. Three-dimensional conformal accelerated hyperfractionation radiotherapy (3D-CAHRT) was performed and the dose was delivered with a schedule of 1.2 Gy twice daily, with an interval of at least 6 h between fractions, 5 days a week. Concurrent capecitabine chemotherapy was administered twice daily. After 36 Gy in 30 fractions over 3 weeks, patients were evaluated to define the resectability of the disease. If resection was not feasible irradiation was resumed until the total dose administered to the tumour reached 51.6-56.4 Gy. RESULTS Two patients temporarily interrupted concurrent chemoradiation because of Grade IV diarrhoea. The remaining 70 patients completed the planned concurrent chemoradiation. In all patients, the complete response rate was 8.3% and the partial response rate was 51.4%. The overall response rate was 59.7% and clinical benefit rate was 93.1%. Symptomatic responses proved to be obvious and tumour resection was performed in 18 patients. The overall median survival time and median progression-free survival time were 32 and 17 months, respectively. 3 year overall survival and progression-free survival were 45.12% and 31.19%, respectively. Severely acute toxicities included Grade III-IV diarrhoea and granulocytopenia with 9.7% and 8.3% incidence respectively. Small bowel obstruction was severely late toxicity, and the incidence was 1.4%. CONCLUSION Three-dimensional conformal accelerated hyperfractionation field-involved re-irradiation combined with concurrent capecitabine chemotherapy might be an effective and well-tolerated regimen for patients with LRIRC.

Germ-line SNPs in docetaxel (D) transport, metabolism, binding site, and degradation genes may contribute to variability in outcomes observed in D treated CRPC pts. Methods: Between 1/07 and 10/08, all PCa pts seen in the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center oncology clinics were approached for recruitment to the Prostate Cancer Genetic Risk Evaluation of SNPs Study (PROGRESS). Participants completed a demographic and clinical questionnaire and provided a blood sample. Only CRPC pts treated with D were included in this analysis. Germ-line DNA was analyzed for SNP genotyping on a 128-SNP chip using a TaqMan OpenArray GT Kit (Applied Biosystems). The chip included genes critical to D signaling, transport, and elimination with minor allele frequencies > 5%. Pts were followed for progression-free (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Univariable analyses were performed to identify significant associations between SNP genotype, clinical parameters, and PFS and OS outcomes. Results: 60 pts with metastatic CRPC initiated on D enrolled. Demographics included: age (median) – 69 yrs, ECOG PS 0– 40%, prostate specific antigen (PSA) (median) – 129.9 ng/ml, PSA doubling time (median) – 1.8 months, visceral mets –25%. No clinical parameters were associated with PFS and OS. Significant SNP associations are summarized below. Germ-line DNA was analyzed for SNP genotyping on a 128-SNP chip using a TaqMan OpenArray GT Kit (Applied Biosystems). The chip included genes critical to hormone signaling, transport, and elimination pathways with minor allele frequencies > 5%. Patients were followed for progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) endpoints. Univariable analyses were performed to identify significant associations between SNP genotype, clinical parameters, and PFS and OS outcomes. Results: 107 patients with PCa initiated on ADT enrolled. Demographics included: age (median)–69 yrs, prostate specific antigen (PSA) (median)–28.0 ng/ml, PSA doubling time (median)–4.9 months, biochemical/metastatic–25%/75%, concurrent anti-androgen therapy–44%. No clinical parameters were associated with PFS and OS. Significant SNP associations with PFS and OS are summarized in the Table. Germline DNA was analyzed for SNP genotyping on a 128-SNP chip using a TaqMan OpenArray GT Kit. The chip included genes critical to hormone signaling, transport, and elimination pathways with minor allele frequencies > 5%. Pts were followed for progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) endpoints. Univariable analyses were performed to identify significant associations between SNP genotype, clinical parameters, and PFS and OS outcomes. Results: Between January 2007 and October 2008, 39 pts with CRPC initiated on KC therapy enrolled. Demographics included: age (median) – 70 yrs, prostate specific antigen (PSA) (median) – 13.0 ng/ml, PSA doubling time (median) – 2.9 months, metastatic –85%, ECOG PS 0– 74%. Age < 70 was associated with shorter PFS (p=0.010) and age > 70 was associated with shorter OS (p=0.030). SNPs significantly associated with PFS and OS are summarized in the table. Conclusions: Interpatient differences in hormonal pathway germline SNPs may contribute to variability in clinical outcomes in pts treated with KC. Abstract
We present a search for hypothetical vectorlike quarks in pp ̅ collisions at √s=1.96 TeV. The data were collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb(-1). We select events with a final state composed of a W or Z boson and a jet consistent with a heavy object decay. We observe no significant excess in comparison to the background prediction and set limits on production cross sections for vectorlike quarks decaying to W+jet and Z+jet. These are the most stringent limits to date for electroweak single vectorlike quark production at hadron colliders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes has been widely recognized as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. With the development of the regenerative medicine, autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), transplantation can effectively improve cardiac function after myocardial infarction. However, the BMSCs used in most previous studies are derived from young or normal donors. Little is know about the biological characters change of BMSCs in diabetes mellitus. METHODS BMSCs were taken from the streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats and normal control rats. Cell proliferation was evaluated by CCK-8 assay. Production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Apoptosis under hypoxia and serum deprivation culture conditions were detected by Hoechst 33342 stain and flow cytometry. Myogenic differentiation, induced by 5-azacytidine was assessed by using immunocytochemical staining for the expression of sarcomeric α-actin and desmin. RESULTS Diabetic rat models were successfully induced by intraperitoneal injection of STZ. The proliferative abilities of BMSCs derived from diabetic rats decreased significantly compared with that from normal rats (P < .05). Similar results were also presented in the cytokines (VEGF and IGF-1) release (P = .02 and P < .01, respectively) that the ability of antiapoptosis and myogenic differentiation decreased obviously between diabetes group and the normal control group (P < .01). CONCLUSION BMSCs from STZ-induced diabetic rats could be successfully harvested and expanded in vitro culture condition; their morphology was very similar to normal control group, with minor changes. However, the proliferative and differentiation properties of diabetic BMSCs, as well as cytokine release and antiapoptosis ability, were significantly impaired.

Abstract
We theoretically studied nonlinear interactions between surface plasmon polariton (SPP) and conventional waveguide mode in nonlinear hybrid waveguide and proposed a possible method to enhance SPP wave via optical parametric amplification (OPA). The phase matching condition of this OPA process is fulfilled by carefully tailoring the dispersions of SPP and guided mode. The influences of incident intensity and phase of guided wave on the OPA process are comprehensively analyzed. It is found that not only a strong enhancement of SPP but also modulations on this enhancement can be achieved. This result indicates potential applications in nonlinear optical integration and modulations.

Abstract
We report the first measurement of the parity-violating single-spin asymmetries for midrapidity decay positrons and electrons from W+ and W- boson production in longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 500 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The measured asymmetries, A(L)(W+) = -0.27 ± 0.10(stat.) ± 0.02(syst.) ± 0.03(norm.) and A(L)(W-) = 0.14 ± 0.19(stat.) ± 0.02(syst.) ± 0.01(norm.), are consistent with theory predictions, which are large and of opposite sign. These predictions are based on polarized quark and antiquark distribution functions constrained by polarized deep-inelastic scattering measurements.

Abstract
ABSTRACTKonarka Technologies has developed efficient electrolyte compositions based on nonvolatile ionic liquids. The electrolyte compositions were subsequently gelled using a metal ion complexation technique, without compromising the photovoltaic performance of the dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The photovoltaic performance of the gel electrolyte incorporated DSSCs is quite stable for extended period of time even in the absence of sealing. Detailed results on performance and stability of the gel electrolyte incorporated DSSCs are presented.

Abstract
AbstractGadolinium and lanthanum solubility limits in a sodium-alumino-borosilicate glass system were studied. As melting temperature increased from 1400°C to 1450°C, 1500°C and 1550°C, the solubility of gadolinium in the baseline glass 15B2O3-5A12O3-20Na2O-60SiO2 (in molar composition) increased from 10.1 to 11.3, 12.2 and 13.1 (in mole percent of Gd2O3). The enthalpy change of Gd2O3 dissolution in this baseline glass is about 43.6 kJ/mol. Boron effect on lanthanum solubility was studied using the following baseline glasses: xB2O3-20Na2O- 5Al2O3-60SiO2, where x equals to 5, 10, 15, and 20, respectively. It was found that lanthanum solubility limit increased from 8.4 to 10.3, 12.5 and 14.9 (in mole percent of La2O3) as B2O3 increased from 5.1 to 9.5, 13.1 and 16.2 mol%. Gd2O. and La2O3 have similar solubility limits. Solubility limits of mixtures containing different ratios of Gd2O3 to La2O3 in the baseline glass 15B2O3-20Na2O-5A12O3-60SiO2 were found insensitive to the ratio of La/Gd. As far as gadolinium is concerned, its solubility limit will decrease when other lanthanides are introduced.

Abstract
AbstractMigration-Enhanced Epitaxy (MEE) has been successfully employed to grow epitaxial films of the ternary compound CuInSe2 on (001) GaAs that are ordered in a CuAu crystallographic structure rather than the compound's equilibrium chalcopyrite structure. Evidence for this structural polytype is provided by XRD, TEM–TED, and Raman scattering data. Film growth under the conditions employed for this study occurs in a Stranski-Krastanov mode. The effects of growth system parameters and overall stoichiometry on 3–D island formation are described, including our observation that ordering of those islands into quasiperiodic self-assembled arrays occurs only in the case of nonstoichiometric copper excess.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this article was to prospectively evaluate the accuracy and radiation dose of 320-detector row dynamic volume CT (DVCT) for the detection of coronary artery disease (CAD) in a high-risk population. METHODS 60 patients with a high risk of CAD underwent DVCT without preceding heart rate control and also underwent invasive coronary angiography (ICA), which served as the standard reference. RESULTS On a per segment analysis, overall sensitivity was 95.3%, specificity was 97.6%, positive predictive value was 90.6%, negative predictive value was 98.8% and Youden index was 0.93. In both heart rate subgroups, diagnostic accuracy for the assessment of coronary artery stenosis was similar. The accuracy of the subgroup with an Agatston score ≥100 was lower than that for patients with an Agatston score <100. However, the difference between DVCT and ICA results was not significant (p=0.08). The mean estimated effective dose of CT was 12.5 ± 9.4 mSv. In those patients with heart rates less than 70 beats per minute (bpm), the mean radiation exposure of DVCT was 5.2 ± 0.9 mSv. The effective radiation dose was significantly lower than that of ICA (14.1 ± 5.9 mSv) (p<0.001). When the heart rate was >70 bpm, a significantly higher dose was delivered to patients with DVCT (22.6 ± 5.2 mSv, p<0.001) than with ICA (15.0 ± 5.3 mSv, p<0.001). CONCLUSION DVCT reliably provides high diagnostic accuracy without heart rate/rhythm control. However, from a dosimetric point of view, it is recommended that heart rate should be controlled to <70 bpm to decrease radiation dose.

Abstract
In a single-centre, randomized trial, gasless laparoscopic myomectomy was compared with conventional laparoscopic myomectomy. The study examined feasibility, safety, reliability and post-operative outcomes. Estimated blood loss, duration of surgery, early post-operative outcomes and length of hospital stay were recorded. Compared with conventional laparoscopic myomectomy, gasless laparoscopy resulted in significantly lower intra-operative blood loss (median 100 ml vs 80 ml, respectively) and duration of surgery (median 94 min vs 71 min, respectively). Post-operative abdominal drainage volume was significantly lower after gasless laparoscopy than after conventional laparoscopy (median 100 ml vs 240 ml). There was no significant difference between duration of post-operative fever, post-operative time to flatus or length of hospital stay. Both forms of laparoscopy are suitable for uterine myomectomy, and comparison of these methods showed that gasless laparoscopy had potential advantages over conventional laparoscopy.

Abstract
211 Background: Several risk factors have been identified as contributors to PC development, including tobacco and alcohol use, and exposure to environmental chemicals. A common denominator of these risk factors is the ability to induce oxidative stress/damage. An individual's genetic makeup may also contribute to oxidative stress, as oxidative stress/damage genes exhibit single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which can alter protein expression or activity. The goal of this study was to (1) determine if increased oxidative stress/damage is observed in PC pts and (2) to assess the contribution of environmental and genetic factors to oxidative stress/damage parameters. Methods: An oxidative stress/damage profile was generated from blood samples of newly diagnosed PC pts (n=20), from non-cohabiting genetic relatives (n=20) and/or from non-genetic relatives living in the same household (n=20). This profile consisted of measurement of total antioxidant capacity (Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity, TEAC), direct and oxidative DNA damage (COMET), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Expression of SNPs in selected oxidative stress/response genes was also evaluated. Environmental and dietary/lifestyle information was collected using a detailed questionnaire. Results: PC pts, when compared to healthy nonrelated but cohabitating relatives, displayed a significant increase in direct DNA damage (p=0.002), while oxidative DNA damage, TEAC and MDA levels were similar. When comparing PC pts to healthy genetic relatives, increased levels of TEAC, direct and oxidative DNA damage approached or were statistically significant (p = 0.061, 0.002, and 0.062 respectively). Analysis of 26 selected SNPs in oxidative stress/ damage genes in the PC pts vs healthy controls revealed that expression of CYP2A6 (L160H), rs1801272, and TNF (-308G>A), rs1800629, approached statistical significance (p=0.05 and 0.20 respectively). Conclusions: Increased oxidative DNA damage observed in PC pts vs healthy related, but non-cohabitating relatives, suggests that environmental exposures contribute to oxidative stress. In combination with a specific genetic background, environmental influences may increase the risk of PC. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Chromosome segregation during mitosis requires a physically large proteinaceous structure called the kinetochore to generate attachments between chromosomal DNA and spindle microtubules. It is essential for kinetochore components to be carefully regulated to guarantee successful cell division. Depletion, mutation or dysregulation of kinetochore proteins results in mitotic arrest and/or cell death. HEC1 (high expression in cancer) has been reported to be a kinetochore protein, depletion of which, by RNA interference, results in catastrophic mitotic exit. MATERIALS AND METHODS AND RESULTS To investigate how HEC1 protein is controlled post-translation, we analysed the role of anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C)-Cdh1 in degradation of HEC1 protein. In this study, we show that HEC1 is an unstable protein and can be targeted by endogenous ubiquitin-proteasome system in HEK293T cells. Results of RNA interference and in vivo ubiquitination assay indicated that HEC1 could be ubiquitinated and degraded by APC/C-hCdh1 E3 ligase. The evolutionally conserved D-box at the C-terminus functioned as the degron of HEC1, destruction of which resulted in resistance to degradation mediated by APC/C-Cdh1. Overexpression of non-degradable HEC1 (D-box destroyed) induced accumulation of cyclin B protein in vivo and triggered mitotic arrest. CONCLUSION APC/C-Cdh1 controls stability of HEC1, ensuring normal cell cycle progression.
