Vibrational spectra of complexes of mercury(I) and mercury(II) with pyridine and other nitrogen bases

Raman and i.r. spectra of the series of compounds MeHg(pyx)ClO4, Hg(pyx)n(ClO4)2 and Hg2- (pyx)n(ClO4)2 (pyx = pyridine or a pyridine derivative; n = 2 or in some cases 4) are reported. In the low- frequency region, the spectra of the complex cations provide the basis of assignments of Hg-N (160-260 cm-1) and Hg-Hg (110-160 cm-1) stretching frequencies.

Vibrational spectra of adducts of iodine monochloride with some pyridine bases

A series of molecular adducts, L-ICl, where L = pyridine or a pyridine derivative, have been prepared and the solid state spectra examined by Raman and far-infrared spectroscopy. Assignments of the modes v(I-Cl) 240-300 cm-1 and v(N-I) 90-180 cm-1 and force constant calculations on a simple three-centre model yield information on structure and bonding related to the nature of the pyridine donor. Several ionic products containing the Icl2- ion have been encountered.

Metabolic fate of 1-hexylcarbamoyl-5-fluorouracil in rats

1. The metabolic fate of a new antitumour agent, 1-hexylcarbamoyl-5-fluoro [6-14C]uracil (14C-HCFU) in rats after oral administration was compared with that of 5-fluoro[6-14C]uracil (14C-FU). 2. Tissue radioactivity reached a max. 1 to 3 h after administration of 14C-HCFU and 0.5 h after 14C-FU. 3. Both drugs were excreted rapidly, mostly in urine. Expired 14CO2 from 14C-HCFU was significantly less than that from 14C-FU. 4. Unchanged FU was not detected in plasma 3 h after administration of 14C-FU, whereas FU was detected in plasma 5 h after 14C-HCFU. The pyrimidine ring of 14C-HCFU might be degradated more slowly than that of 14C-FU. 5. 1-(5-Carboxypentylcarbamoyl)-5-fluorouracil and 1-(3-carboxypropylcarbamoyl)-5-fluorouracil were identified as the major urinary metabolites of 14C-HCFU.

Vibrational spectra of mercury(I) nitrate in aqueous solution and of the crystalline hydrolysis products

Aqueous solutions of 'mercurous nitrate' are shown by Raman spectra to contain the complexes [Hg2(OH2)NO3]+ and [Hg2(OH2)2]2+. Crystalline dimercury(I) nitrate, Hg2(NO3)2,2H2O, and its solid hydrolysis products Hg2(OH)2,3Hg2(NO3)2, 2Hg2(OH)2,3Hg2(NO3)2,H2O and Hg2(OH)2,- Hg2(NO3)2 have been obtained: the vibrational spectra are reported and interpreted in terms of possible structures. Modes v(Hg-Hg) appear in the range 170- 200 cm-1 and are sensitive to the particular combination of the ligands OH, ONO2, and H2O attached to the dimercury(I) ion.

Emergency coronary surgery: Evolving indications

Between December 1970 and October 1973, 74 patients underwent emergency myocardial revascularization for the relief of acute coronary insufficiency. Through our experience in this area, we have established three categories for which we perform emergency surgery. The first of these is cardiogenic shock complicating acute myocardial infarction for which 14 patients underwent emergency saphenous vein grafting. Seven of these patients expired during operation and one died three months after operation. The second category is acute unstable myocardial infarction for which 25 patients received surgery. There were no operative deaths in this group, but two patients died at six weeks and four months after operation. Thrity-five patients were classified as pre-infarctional angina, the third category for which we perform surgery on an emergency basis. There was one operative death and two late deaths at four and ten months in this group of patients. Our experience suggests that immediate coronary angiography and revascularization will improve survival in the three above-named categories.
