Abstract
Six patients with severe aplastic anemia treated with horse anti-human thymocyte globulin (ATG) and androgen. Four of these patients were only given ATG (ATGAMR), 16 mg/Kg/dose x 10 doses. The remaining two cases received an infusion of maternal HLA-haploidentical marrow cells following ATG therapy. One patient had a complete response, three had a partial response, one showed minimal improvement and two were non-responders. The two patients who received the additional haploidentical marrow cells showed a hematologic recovery sooner than the ATG alone cases. The toxicity of the ATG therapy was tolerable. Long term follow up of there patients and further studies of this treatment in aplastic anemia with pediatric age group are under way.

Abstract
A specific and sensitive radioimmunoassay for the rat aminoterminal procollagen type III peptide (PIIIP) was developed which allowed easy and sequential measurement of this peptide in the serum of individual animals. PIIIP in sera of 1-week-old rats was high (60 +/- 15.4 ng, 1 SD) falling to 15.7 +/- 4.3 ng/ml (1 SD) at 7 weeks and 6.7 +/- 2.6 ng/ml (1 SD) at 12 weeks of age. Adult animals (above 6 months of age) showed serum PIIIP levels in the narrow range of 2.5 +/- 2.33 ng/ml (2.5 SD). CCl4-induced liver damage in adult rats produced an elevated serum PIIIP (median 9.1; range 2.6-45.2 ng/ml) already after 2 weeks, rising to a mean of 33.8 ng/ml (range 22.0-47 ng/ml) after 6 weeks of continued CCl4-intoxication. In the same animals at 6 weeks, hepatic hydroxyproline was almost 5 times higher in the CCl4-group (mean 493.2; range 343.1-582.3 micrograms/100 mg dry weight) when compared with controls (109 +/- 14 micrograms/100 mg dry weight, 1 SD). These results are in complete analogy to those reported for PIIIP in sera of growing children, healthy human adults and patients with fibrogenic liver disease. Elevated serum PIIIP in rats with experimental liver fibrosis predicts the deposition of excess hepatic collagen. This novel serum test allows, for the first time, to assess altered PIIIP metabolism and hepatic fibrogenesis in individual animals as early as 2 weeks after the start of the experiment. It also reflects growth-related changes of type III collagen metabolism.

Abstract
The Gianotti-Crosti syndrome, papular acrodermatitis of childhood (PAC), is an infrequently recognized disorder with distinctive characteristics. At present hepatitis B virus is thought to be an etiologic agent. The disease is very rare in Korea, in spite of the high frequency of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in the general population. It is known that subtype ayw of the HBsAg may influence the pathogenesis of PAC, but subtype analysis of HBsAg in these patients disclosed adr. Therefore, our studies reconfirmed that PAC may in addition be associated with subtype adr of HBsAg. We believe that the lower incidence of PAC in Korea as compared with the high incidence of PAC in other parts of the world, such as in the Mediterranean area, may be due to the fact that a higher predisposition to PAC is conferred by subtype ayw of HBsAg.

Abstract
The objective of this paper is to present a new technique which can provide both active respiration source pressure and lung impedance in a single noninvasive test. The method is based upon a Thévenin equivalent circuit model of respiratory mechanics. Using this model, the equivalent source pressure and source impedance can be computed from the measured changes of respiratory pressures and flows in two consecutive cycles before and after addition of purely resistive loads to the mouth. In maximal breathing the source parameters were reproducible in six normal human subjects. The total respiratory resistance during maximal breathing had an average value of 3.46 cmH2O l-1 s-1, and the total dynamic compliance had an average value of 0.078 l cmH2O-1. The airway resistances measured using a plethysmographic method were within the range of 45-65% of the estimated total respiratory resistances. These two resistances were related with a correlation coefficient of 0.98. An average value of the magnitudes of the fundamental components of the source pressure was 6.73 cmH2O during maximal breathing and 2.09 cmH2O during spontaneous breathing.

Abstract
A 5-year-old Korean boy with diagnosis of cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita had a bluish-red, widespread livedo network over the entire body surface. There was skin atrophy as well as ulceration and crust over some of the lesions. These abnormalities have been associated with mental retardation with abnormal EEG findings, speech disability, defective growth, cleft palate, presence of simian lines and an increase in the atd angles of both palms, diffuse demineralization of bony structure and weakness of the long extensor muscles of both thumbs. Based on our clinical datas and review of world literature, it would seem to be necessary to change the terminology.

Abstract
We evaluated hematological findings, with special reference to the monocyte count, in ten infants with congenital syphilis. One patient had a monocytic leukemoid reaction and eight had absolute monocyte counts considerably higher than normal control infants. Monocytes appear to be an essential participant in the cellular reaction to treponema pallidum. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a monocytic leukemoid reaction in congenital syphilis.

Abstract
An 11-year-old black boy with sickle cell anemia developed profound pancytopenia during the course of his disease, but fully recovered therefrom. The patient was receiving anticonvulsant drugs for a seizure disorder secondary to a "stroke," and, therefore, a drug-related marrow aplasia cannot be ruled out.

Abstract
The clinical and hematological features of 100 patients with sickle cell anemia are reviewed. The heart was enlarged and a murmur was heard in nearly 80 percent of patients. Pneumonia and pulmonary infarction occurred in 43 percent and 12 percent of patients, respectively. Musculoskeletal involvement included the hand-foot syndrome (15 percent), leg ulcers (55 percent), aseptic necrosis ofbone (11 percent), and osteomyelitis (4 percent). Symptoms and signs related to the gastrointestinal system included jaundice (55 percent), hepatomegaly (50 percent), splenomegaly (23 percent), hepatitis (11 percent) and gallstones (9 percent). Three patients underwent cholecystectomy and three patients had their spleens removed. Pyelonephritis occurred in 17 patients, priapism in five and hematuria in seven. Nineteen women had 39 pregnancies, of which 35 resulted in the birth of healthy infants. At least 328 painful crises occurred in 73 patients. There were also 13 hemolytic crises, eight sequestration crises, and five aplastic crises. A trail of alkali therapy in 33 crises in children failed to produce beneficial effects greater than hydration and analgesics alone as used in the control group. Laboratory findings in the 100 patients were comparable to those previously reported in the literature. The renal concentrating defect in most patients was confirmed. There were six deaths: hepatic coma secondary to post-transfusion hepatitis, thrombosis of inferior vena cava, congestive heart failure, exsanguination from erosion of the pancreaticoduodenal artery, extensive bronchopneumonia, and pulmonary infarction.
