Carbon-13 enrichment in the room temperature multiphoton decomposition of CF3Br

High isotopic selectivities have been observed in the multiphoton decomposition of CF3Br at room temperature. Photolysis of natural abundance CF3Br gives C2F6 enriched to 42% in carbon-13. This is higher than observed for CF3I even at very low temperatures.

[Concentration and method of cadmium fixation by a marine Vibrio]

In many organisms, intracellular fixation of cadmium involves specific proteins, the metallothioneins. A similar phenomenon was demonstrated in a marine bacterium belonging to the genus Vibrio. The accumulation of the metal is a function of its concentration in the medium. The uptake is also increased by cysteine, which decreases the toxicity of the metal.

Effect of temperature and phase on the photoionization energy threshold of TMPD in hydrocarbon solvents

The temperature dependence of the TMPD photoionization energy threshold, I, in a set of eight hydrocarbon solvents has been systematically studied, from room temperature down to 77 K. For this purpose ion-pair formation is detected either by measuring the photocurrents in the liquid phase or by measuring the recombination luminescence intensity in the solid phase. It is found that I(liquid) increases linearly when the temperature is decreased down to the liquid–solid transition temperature. At this temperature I undergoes an abrupt increase of 0.2–0.6 eV depending on the hydrocarbon and the nature of the phase transition. Any subsequent solid–solid phase change is accompanied by a new shift towards higher energy. In the low temperature phase of all the studied crystals, I(solid) has a constant value down to 77 K. Glass-forming liquids have a very different behavior: I varies linearly in the liquid and the straight line extrapolates to the I(glass) value at 77 K. The applicability of the two methods is discussed. From the present data it is concluded that the conduction state energy, V0, is constant in the low-temperature phase of crystals. By calculating the polarization energy due to the TMPD+ cation and from data on the temperature dependence of V0 in the liquid phase, we have estimated V0 in crystalline n-hexane (0.64 eV) and 2,2,4-trimethylpentane (0.44 eV) and in the plastic phase of cyclohexane (0.47 eV) and 2,2-dimethylbutane (0.01 eV). Finally a correlation of I with the medium density is described.

Adenosine-3',5'-monophosphate-dependent protein kinase from bovine anterior pituitary gland. 3. Structural specificity of the ATP site of the catalytic subunit

The effect of analogues and derivatives of adenosine 3′,5′-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) and of ATP on the incorporation of 32P from [γ-32P]ATP into histones has been measured using the purified catalytic subunit of adenohypophyseal protein kinase. Gamma-labeled CTP, GTP, and UTP cannot substitute for [γ-32P]ATP but they slightly inhibit the phosphorylation by [γ-32P]-ATP when present as unlabeled compounds. A stringent requirement of the adenine nucleus is observed for the ability to compete at the ATP site, inhibitions of 42, 39, 32, and 63% being observed respectively with adenine, adenosine, 5′AMP, and ADP, while the corresponding purine or pyrimidine derivatives have no effect when present at a 13-fold molar excess relative to [γ-32P]ATP. The N6-benzoyl and N6-butyryl derivatives of cyclic AMP are inactive whereas the 8-substituted derivatives are generally as active as cyclic AMP itself, except for the 8-amino- and 8-hydroxy-derivatives, which exhibit a lower degree of competition. All cyclic AMP and ATP analogues and derivatives that inhibit histone phosphorylation by [γ-32P]ATP act as competitive inhibitors. Such competition at the ATP site of the catalytic subunit of protein kinase probably accounts for the progressive inhibition of cyclic-AMP-dependent protein kinase activity measured at high concentrations (above 10−5 M) of the cyclic nucleotide.

Translational control of protein synthesis in rat anterior pituitary by N 6 -2'-O-dibutyryl adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate

Actinomycin D, at doses (25 and 50 μg/ml) that block RNA synthesis to less than 3% of the control rate, inhibits the incorporation of [3H]leucine into adenohypophyseal proteins and the release of newly synthesized proteins by 50 and 60%, respectively, of the control rates. Despite this lowering of basal levels of total protein synthesis and release in presence of the antibiotic, the percentage of stimulation of both protein synthesis and release by 5 mM N6-2′-O-dibutyryl adenosine 3′5′-monophosphate (dbcAMP) is not depressed by actinomycin D. When rat hemipituitaries are incubated with [3H]uridine, dbcAMP does not stimulate the labeling of total cytoplasmic RNA or the preferential labeling of any cytoplasmic RNA species resolved on sucrose gradient. There is no stimulatory effect of dbcAMP on total labeling or preferential incorporation into nuclear RNA species extracted at 24 °C or at 65 °C. Labeling of the nucleotide pools was unchanged up to 1 h of incubation but was increased (40–70%) during the last [Formula: see text] of incubation. These data suggest that the short-term stimulatory effects of dbcAMP on total adenohypophyseal protein synthesis and release are exerted at the transiational level.
