Abstract
Simulated pot experiments were conducted on four rice (Oryza sativa L.) genotypes (Triguna, IR-36, PNR-519, and IET-4786) to examine the effects of As(V) on amino acids and mineral nutrient status in grain along with antioxidant response to arsenic exposure. Rice genotypes responded differentially to As(V) exposure in terms of amino acids and antioxidant profiles. Total amino acid content in grains of all rice genotypes was positively correlated with arsenic accumulation. While, most of the essential amino acids increased in all cultivars except IR-36, glutamic acid and glycine increased in IET-4786 and PNR-519. The level of nonprotein thiols (NPTs) and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD; EC 1.15.1.1), glutathione reductase (GR; EC 1.6.4.2) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX; EC 1.11.1.11) increased in all rice cultivars except IET-4786. A significant genotypic variation was also observed in specific arsenic uptake (SAU; mg kg(-1)dw), which was in the order of Triguna (134) > IR-36 (71) > PNR-519 (53) > IET-4786 (29). Further, application of As(V) at lower doses (4 and 8 mg L(-1) As) enhanced the accumulation of selenium (Se) and other nutrients (Fe, P, Zn, and S), however, higher dose (12 mg L(-1) As) limits the nutrient uptake in rice. In conclusion, low As accumulating genotype, IET-4786, which also had significantly induced level of essential amino acids, seems suitable for cultivation in moderately As contaminated soil and would be safe for human consumption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In dogs with heart failure (HF), chronic therapy with cardiac contractility modulation (CCM) electrical signals delivered to left ventricular (LV) muscle during the absolute refractory period improves LV function. This study examined the effects of CCM therapy on the expression of calcium (Ca(2+))-binding proteins (CBPs) in dogs with HF. METHODS AND RESULTS Studies were performed in LV tissue from seven CCM-treated HF dogs, seven untreated HF dogs, and six normal (NL) dogs. mRNA expression of S100A1, sorcin, presenillin-1 (PS1), PS2, histidine-rich Ca(2+)-binding protein (HRC), and 18S ribosomal RNA (18S), a housekeeping gene, was measured using RT-PCR. Protein levels of CBPs and calsequestrin (CSQ) were determined by Western blotting. No difference was observed in the expression of 18S and CSQ among study groups. Compared with NL, the expression of S100A1, sorcin, and HRC was decreased, whereas the expression of PS2 was increased in untreated HF dogs. CCM therapy normalized the expression of S100A1, sorcin, and PS2 but not of HRC. No change was seen in the expression of PS1 among study groups. CONCLUSION CCM therapy restores LV expression of S100A1, PS2, and sorcin. Normalization of CBPs may partly contribute to improved LV function in HF following CCM therapy.

Abstract
Electromechanical above-knee prosthetics are widely available, and are reliant on repetitive knee movements of fixed length/angle. This work explores the viability of developing adaptive movements on existing prototypes, through embedded controls from 8051-class 8-bit microcontroller units (MCUs). The system includes an integrated goniometer, intended for measuring the knee angle of the sound limb. The phase delay is subsequently processed to bring about kinematic coordination in the proposed echo-controlled prosthetic.

Abstract
Extra cranial aneurysms of the internal carotid artery are extremely rare. We report a case of an extracranial internal carotid aneurysm in a 71 year old lady who presented with a right parapharyngeal mass with longstanding symptoms of dysphagia and dysphonia. The importance of MRI/CT to establish a radiological diagnosis before fine needle aspiration cytology or open biopsy of such masses is highlighted.

Abstract
Due to its various uses, Cr contamination has become widespread in a diverse array of environments. The present study was carried out during 2007-2008 to investigate the accumulation potential of metals (Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn) and metalloid (As) by green (GA) and blue green (BGA) microalgae growing naturally in selected Cr-contaminated sites in districts Unnao and Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh, India). This investigation is a preliminary work to identify suitable native microalgae for biomonitoring and phytoremediation purposes. A total of 22 GA and 11 BGA were encountered in three seasons (summer, rainy and winter). Among these, the accumulation potential was evaluated in high biomass producing strains of BGA (three) and GA (nine). The maximum accumulation of Cr was shown by Phormedium bohneri (8550 microg g(-1)dw) followed by Oscillatoria tenuis (7354 microg g(-1)dw), Chlamydomonas angulosa (5325 microg g(-1)dw), Ulothrix tenuissima (4564 microg g(-1)dw), and Oscillatoria nigra (1862 microg g(-1)dw); all of which demonstrated a transfer factor of >10% for Cr. The results also indicate that the phytoplankton diversity was modified by Cr pollution. BGA represented the dominant community where Cr concentration was higher (11.84 and 2.27 mg L(-1)) (r=0.695), whereas GA showed negative correlation with respect to Cr concentration (r=-0.567). In conclusion, different algal species were able to grow in Cr-contaminated sites and to accumulate significant amounts of Cr with a high transfer factor.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We determined usefulness of transcutaneous bilirubinometry to decrease the need for blood sampling to assay serum total bilirubin (STB) in the management of jaundiced healthy Indian neonates. METHODS Newborns, > or =35 weeks' gestation, with clinical evidence of jaundice were enrolled in an institutional approved randomized clinical trial. The severity of hyperbilirubinaemia was determined by two non-invasive methods: i) protocol-based visual assessment of bilirubin (VaB) and ii) transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) determination (BiliCheck). By a random allocation, either method was used to decide the need for blood sampling, which was defined to be present if assessed STB by allocated method exceeded 80% of hour-specific threshold values for phototherapy (2004 AAP Guidelines). RESULTS A total of 617 neonates were randomized to either TcB (n = 314) or VaB (n = 303) groups with comparable gestation, birth weight and postnatal age. Need for blood sampling to assay STB was 34% lower (95% CI: 10% to 51%) in the TcB group compared with VaB group (17.5% vs 26.4% assessments; risk difference: -8.9%, 95% CI: -2.4% to -15.4%; p = 0.008). CONCLUSION Routine use of transcutaneous bilirubinometry compared with systematic visual assessment of bilirubin significantly reduced the need for blood sampling to assay STB in jaundiced term and late-preterm neonates. Abstract
SUMMARY This study covers issues on advanced unwanted pregnancies in rural single women in South-east Asia, with reference to age, education, occupation, person responsible (i.e. baby's father) and reasons for delay in seeking assistance. It describes single women with pregnancy beyond the time for abortion, as set by the Indian abortion law. The study involved 314 girls/women and was set in the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram, India. The girls/women were admitted, provided with free facilities and had their babies looked after by hospital staff until given up for adoption, or otherwise. The outcomes of the study showed that most individuals (71.01%) were rural, less-literate, working girls. In 94.26% of cases, the baby's father was known; 24 (7.64%) reported rape (13 by a known person). A total of 66 individuals (21.02%) did not inform their parents about the pregnancy for up to 5 months. Five (1.59%) went to unqualified medical practitioners and 16.56% to private practitioners who did not give their services. A total of 47 (14.96%) had waited for the person responsible for their pregnancy before seeking assistance. There was a total of 315 babies born to 310 mothers (five twins); four absconded undelivered; 13 absconded after delivery (two with their babies, 11 leaving babies). The study found that pregnancies were often caused by rape and girls/women with no knowledge of abortion laws, shyness, fear, lack of desired privacy, lack of resources, misleading management at periphery all went beyond 20 weeks. Mostly, the babies were not accepted--the girls married the babies' fathers, but left their babies. Emergency contraception for unprotected sexual intercourse is essential.

Abstract
Growth and biochemical responses of heterocystous nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria Anabaena doliolum were studied upon exposure to various concentrations of nickel (0.1 to 100 microM) for duration of up to 4 days, in view of its tolerance. The growth of the cyanobacterium was increased in terms of cell density (O.D), heterocyst frequency chlorophyll-a, carotenoid and c-phycocynin up to moderate exposure (10 microM for 96 hr of Ni treatment). Protein and total non protein thiol were measured as stress responsive metabolites and frequency of heterocyst and spores were observed in responses to Ni. The present study demonstrated that the tested cyanobacterium exhibited dose specific responses of metal towards studied different morphological, physiological and biochemical parameters.
