Cat Swarm Optimization algorithm for optimal linear phase FIR filter design

In this paper a new meta-heuristic search method, called Cat Swarm Optimization (CSO) algorithm is applied to determine the best optimal impulse response coefficients of FIR low pass, high pass, band pass and band stop filters, trying to meet the respective ideal frequency response characteristics. CSO is generated by observing the behaviour of cats and composed of two sub-models. In CSO, one can decide how many cats are used in the iteration. Every cat has its' own position composed of M dimensions, velocities for each dimension, a fitness value which represents the accommodation of the cat to the fitness function, and a flag to identify whether the cat is in seeking mode or tracing mode. The final solution would be the best position of one of the cats. CSO keeps the best solution until it reaches the end of the iteration. The results of the proposed CSO based approach have been compared to those of other well-known optimization methods such as Real Coded Genetic Algorithm (RGA), standard Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Differential Evolution (DE). The CSO based results confirm the superiority of the proposed CSO for solving FIR filter design problems. The performances of the CSO based designed FIR filters have proven to be superior as compared to those obtained by RGA, conventional PSO and DE. The simulation results also demonstrate that the CSO is the best optimizer among other relevant techniques, not only in the convergence speed but also in the optimal performances of the designed filters.

Long-term follow-up of acute isolated accommodation insufficiency

Purpose

To define the long-term results of accommodation insufficiency and to investigate the correlation between accommodation insufficiency and other factors including near point of convergence (NPC), age, and refractive errors.

Methods

From January 2008 to December 2009, 11 patients with acute near vision disturbance and remote near point of accommodation (NPA) were evaluated. Full ophthalmologic examinations, including best corrected visual acuity, manifest refraction and prism cover tests were performed. Accommodation ability was measured by NPA using the push-up method. We compared accommodation insufficiency and factors including age, refractive errors and NPC. We also investigated the recovery from loss of accommodation in patients.

Results

Mean age of patients was 20 years (range, 9 to 34 years). Five of the 11 patients were female. Mean refractive error was -0.6 diopters (range, -3.5 to +0.25 diopters) and 8 of 11 patients (73%) had emmetropia (+0.50 to -0.50 diopters). No abnormalities were found in brain imaging tests. Refractive errors were not correlated with NPA or NPC (rho = 0.148, p = 0.511; rho = 0.319, p = 0.339; respectively). The correlation between age and NPA was not significant (rho = -395, p = 0.069). However, the correlation between age and NPC was negative (rho = -0.508, p = 0.016). Three of 11 patients were lost to follow-up, and 6 of 8 patients had permanent insufficiency of accommodation.

Conclusions

Accommodation insufficiency is most common in emmetropia, however, refractive errors and age are not correlated with accommodation insufficiency. Dysfunction of accommodation can be permanent in the isolated accommodation insufficiency.

Growth and spread of manufacturing productivity across regions in India

Abstract

An expected outcome of economic reforms in India is enhanced pace of industrialization with manufacturing sector playing a crucial role by increasing its share in output via higher investments and increased productivity. This process of industrialization was also expected to usher in possibilities for the slow growing states to catch up with the fast growing ones. This paper assesses the extent of regional manufacturing performance in India by analyzing the trends in labour and total factor productivity for the organized manufacturing sector of 15 major Indian states. Data Envelopment Analysis is used to compute Malmquist total factor productivity index and its components. The results indicate that labour productivity diverges in the reform era and its growth and TFPG follow more or less a similar pattern. The study also finds that growth in productivity vary considerably across states and this variation in productivity growth can be explained, to a great extent, by differences in infrastructural development at the regional level.

Estimator reduction and convergence of adaptive BEM

A posteriori error estimation and related adaptive mesh-refining algorithms have themselves proven to be powerful tools in nowadays scientific computing. Contrary to adaptive finite element methods, convergence of adaptive boundary element schemes is, however, widely open. We propose a relaxed notion of convergence of adaptive boundary element schemes. Instead of asking for convergence of the error to zero, we only aim to prove estimator convergence in the sense that the adaptive algorithm drives the underlying error estimator to zero. We observe that certain error estimators satisfy an estimator reduction property which is sufficient for estimator convergence. The elementary analysis is only based on Dörfler marking and inverse estimates, but not on reliability and efficiency of the error estimator at hand. In particular, our approach gives a first mathematical justification for the proposed steering of anisotropic mesh-refinements, which is mandatory for optimal convergence behavior in 3D boundary element computations.

Convergence of adaptive BEM for some mixed boundary value problem

For a boundary integral formulation of the 2D Laplace equation with mixed boundary conditions, we consider an adaptive Galerkin BEM based on an [Formula: see text]-type error estimator. We include the resolution of the Dirichlet, Neumann, and volume data into the adaptive algorithm. In particular, an implementation of the developed algorithm has only to deal with discrete integral operators. We prove that the proposed adaptive scheme leads to a sequence of discrete solutions, for which the corresponding error estimators tend to zero. Under a saturation assumption for the non-perturbed problem which is observed empirically, the sequence of discrete solutions thus converges to the exact solution in the energy norm.

Asthenopia as the presenting symptom in advance allergic fungal sinusitis

A 14-year-old male presented to the ophthalmology clinic with a history of asthenopia. Laboratory, radiological and histopathological studies confirmed the diagnosis of allergic fungal sinusitis resulting in lateral displacement of the medial rectus muscles. Symptoms improved and near point of convergence recovered after surgical endoscopic decompression of the ethmoidal and maxillary sinuses.

The analysis of AC/A ratio in nonrefractive accommodative esotropia treated with bifocal glasses

Purpose

To report the long term results of bifocal treatment in nonrefractive accommodative esotropia and to analyze the changes of accommodative convergence to accommodation (AC/A) ratio.

Methods

Sixteen patients treated with bifocal glasses for at least 5 years were evaluated retrospectively. Angle of deviation at near and distance, refractive error, and AC/A ratio by the lens gradient method were analyzed. The changes of AC/A ratios were also compared after dividing the patients according to continuation or cessation of bifocal therapy.

Results

Six patients (38%; bifocal stop group, BSG) were able to stop using bifocal glasses at an average age of 10.8 years (range, 6.5 to 15.4 years) during their follow-up. However, the other ten patients (62%; bifocal continue group, BCG) had to continue using bifocal glasses until the final visit, which was 13.8 years on average (range, 11.3 to 18.5 years). The AC/A ratio decreased from time of bifocal prescription to the last visit in both groups, from 4.4 to 2.7 in the BSG and from 5.9 to 4.5 in the BCG. AC/A ratios were significantly higher (p = 0.03) in the BCG than that of the BSG from the beginning of bifocal treatment and this difference was persistent until the final visit (p = 0.03).

Conclusions

The AC/A ratio decreased with age in both groups but was significantly higher throughout the entire follow-up period in the BCG. AC/A ratio at bifocal prescription could be an important factor in predicting response to bifocal treatment.

Convergence of normal stem cell and cancer stem cell developmental stage: Implication for differential therapies

Increased evidence shows that normal stem cells may contribute to cancer development and progression by acting as cancer-initiating cells through their interactions with abnormal environmental elements. We postulate that normal stem cells and cancer stem cells (CSC) possess similar mechanisms of self-renewal and differentiation. CSC can be the key to the elaboration of anti-cancer-based therapy. In this article, we focus on a controversial new theme relating to CSC. Tumorigenesis may have a critical stage characterized as a "therapeutic window", which can be identified by association of molecular, biochemical and biological events. Identifying such a stage can allow the production of more effective therapies (e.g. manipulated stem cells) to treat several cancers. More importantly, confirming the existence of a similar therapeutic window during the conversion of normal stem cells to malignant CSC may lead to targeted therapy specifically against CSC. This conversion information may be derived from investigating the biological behaviour of both normal stem cells and cancerous stem cells. Currently, there is little knowledge about the cellular and molecular mechanisms that govern the initiation and maintenance of CSC. Studies on co-evolution and interdependence of cancer with normal tissues may lead to a useful treatment paradigm of cancer. The crosstalk between normal stem cells and cancer formation may converge developmental stages of different types of stem cells (e.g. normal stem cells, CSC and embryonic stem cells). The differential studies of the convergence may result in novel therapies for treating cancers.

Habitat insularity and fire response traits: evidence from a sclerophyll archipelago

Rock outcrops are landscape features that may form habitat islands in a matrix of more widespread vegetation. The patterns of floristics, reproduction, gender, life span, growth forms, and fire response traits were compared between rock outcrops and matrix sclerophyll vegetation to test for insularity in taxon composition and functional traits. The outcrops and matrix had similar reproduction, gender, life span, and growth form traits, being dominated by co-sexual sclerophyll shrubs. The outcrops, however, were dissimilar in species composition and functional traits forming an archipelago of habitat islands in a forest matrix. Rank abundance curves were less even on rock outcrops than in adjacent forests, being dominated by shrubs that were killed by fire (obligate seeders). The ratio of shrubs killed by fire (obligate seeders) to resprouters was 70:30 on the outcrops compared with 38:62 in the matrix. Evidence for functional convergence in fire response traits comes from 27 genera, in 17 families, which have congeners in each habitat. Most shrub congeners on or near rocky outcrops were killed by fire whereas related taxa in the forests resprout after fire. Functional convergence can be related to disturbance frequency and/or differences in regeneration niche among habitats. A resprouting response appears to be related to more frequent fires in the matrix as outcrops experience fires less often. The dominance of obligate seeding shrubs on high rainfall outcrops may also be related to better resources in an environment where allocation to growth rather than storage could be advantageous. In drier and shadier habitats, however, resprouting may be promoted over seedling recruitment as the risks of recruitment failure are higher.
