Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with eating disorders can refer to a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms, sometimes to justify reduced food intake and vomiting. The authors investigated whether adolescent patients with eating disorders and dyspeptic symptoms have altered gastric electric activity and abnormal gastric emptying as assessed respectively by electrogastrography and scintigraphy. METHODS Twenty-eight patients (18 with anorexia and 10 with bulimia) and 16 healthy volunteers underwent electrogastrography; 20 of the 28 patients (14 with anorexia and 6 with bulimia) underwent gastric emptying scintigraphy. Electrogastrography with bipolar recording lasted 1 hour, 30 minutes before and after a standard meal. Before gastric emptying scintigraphy, patients fasted overnight; during testing, they ingested a solid meal labeled with technetium-99m sulfur colloid. The ratio of fasting to postprandial electrogastrographic variables was evaluated using the Wilcoxon matched-pair test. The Mann- Whitney test was used to compare absolute values for electrogastrographic data in each group. The Student paired t test was used to compare scintigraphic results expressed as percentage of gastric emptying at 60 minutes and as the gastric emptying time (T(1/2)). RESULTS Patients with bulimia significantly differed from those with anorexia and control subjects regarding the amount of normal gastric electric activity and bradygastria, and from patients with anorexia only regarding tachygastria. These electrogastrographic variables did not differ significantly between patients with anorexia and control subjects. Gastric emptying time (T(1/2)) was significantly longer in patients with bulimia than in those with anorexia. CONCLUSIONS Adolescent patients with bulimia who complain of dyspeptic symptoms have documentable abnormalities of gastric electric activity and emptying, whereas their counterparts with anorexia, probably owing to their shorter disease duration, do not.

Abstract
Cytokines are involved in fever and other symptoms of the acute phase response induced by endotoxins. The aim of this work was to study the involvement of central tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in the changes induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on gastrointestinal (GI) motility in sheep. Body temperature and myoelectric activity of the antrum, duodenum and jejunum was recorded continuously. Intravenous (i.v.) administration of LPS (0.1 micro g kg-1)-induced hyperthermia, decreased gastrointestinal myoelectric activity and increased the frequency of the migrating motor complex (MMC). These effects started 40-50 min after LPS and lasted for 6-7 h. TNF-alpha (50 and 100 ng kg-1) mimicked these effects when injected intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) but not i.v. Pretreatment with soluble recombinant TNF receptor (TNFR:Fc, 10 micro g kg-1, i.c.v.) abolished the TNF-induced actions and reduced those evoked by LPS. Furthermore, the effects induced by either LPS or TNF were suppressed by prior i.c.v. injection of indomethacin (100 micro g kg-1). In contrast, the i.v. injections of TNFR:Fc or indomethacin were ineffective. Our data suggest that LPS disturbs GI motility in sheep through a central pathway that involves TNF-alpha and prostaglandins sequentially.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the daily pattern of hunger sensation (HS) in patients affected by a non-advanced form of cystic fibrosis (CF) in order to detect how the orectic stimulus (OS) behaves in fibrocystic patients (FP) who are obliged to eat frequently because of their pancreatic exocrine insufficiency. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study involved 27 out-patients (13 males and 14 females; mean age 18 +/- 4 years; mean BMI 18.77 +/- 2.17 kg/m2) with a non-advanced form of CF, and 19 clinically healthy subjects (CHS, 9 males and 10 females; mean age 24 +/- 2 years; mean BMI 21.00 +/- 1.70 kg/m2). The FP were used to eating frequent small meals between the three main meals of breakfast, lunch and dinner. All of the participants were asked to compile an "orexigram"' which was chrono-biometrically analysed by means of: 1) conventional statistical methods; 2) rhythmometric analysis of circadian rhythm (CR); and 3) spectral analysis of the harmonic structure substantiating the within-day variability of HS. RESULTS HS in FP had 1) a significantly increased daily mean level; 2) a well-established CR, with a significantly increased oscillatory mesor and amplitude; and 3) a modified orexigram power spectrum affecting the ultradian harmonic components. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that the orectic perception of CF patients is characterised by "daily hyperorexia", with the maintenance of HS CR. This condition seems to be a structured abnormality insofar as there are visible changes in the orexigram spectral resolution, particular in the ultradian harmonic components whose oscillatory frequency is responsible for the diurnal pattern of HS. The hyperorexia of the investigated FP indicates that their frequent small meals are not sufficient to satisfy their HS, which may cause a vicious circle leading to progressively disrupted mealtime behaviour.

Abstract
The balance function is a new observable based on the principle that charge is locally conserved when particles are pair produced. Balance functions have been measured for charged particle pairs and identified charged pion pairs in Au+Au collisions at the square root of SNN = 130 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider using STAR. Balance functions for peripheral collisions have widths consistent with model predictions based on a superposition of nucleon-nucleon scattering. Widths in central collisions are smaller, consistent with trends predicted by models incorporating late hadronization.

Abstract
Azimuthal correlations for large transverse momentum charged hadrons have been measured over a wide pseudorapidity range and full azimuth in Au+Au and p+p collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The small-angle correlations observed in p+p collisions and at all centralities of Au+Au collisions are characteristic of hard-scattering processes previously observed in high-energy collisions. A strong back-to-back correlation exists for p+p and peripheral Au+Au. In contrast, the back-to-back correlations are reduced considerably in the most central Au+Au collisions, indicating substantial interaction as the hard-scattered partons or their fragmentation products traverse the medium.

Abstract
Azimuthal anisotropy (v(2)) and two-particle angular correlations of high p(T) charged hadrons have been measured in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=130 GeV for transverse momenta up to 6 GeV/c, where hard processes are expected to contribute significantly. The two-particle angular correlations exhibit elliptic flow and a structure suggestive of fragmentation of high p(T) partons. The monotonic rise of v(2)(p(T)) for p(T)<2 GeV/c is consistent with collective hydrodynamical flow calculations. At p(T)>3 GeV/c, a saturation of v(2) is observed which persists up to p(T)=6 GeV/c.

Abstract
In mammalian cells, the repair of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) is mainly mediated by DNA non-homologous end joining. DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK), a nuclear serine-threonine kinase and a member of the phosphaditylinositol-3 kinase-related kinase family that is activated by DSBs, is a key component of this pathway. Wortmannin (WM) is known to be an irreversible and potent inhibitor of DNA-PK and has thus been proposed as an effective sensitizer for ionizing radiation and for radiomimetic compounds. The present study, using the cytokinesis block micronucleus assay, reports on the differential effect of WM on the repair of the DNA damage induced by low LET ((60)Co gamma-radiation) and high LET radiation by the boron neutron capture reaction (alpha and Li particles) in V79 Chinese hamster cells. Significant increases in the number of micronuclei per binucleated cell as well as in the frequency of micronucleated binucleated cells were observed in the presence of different concentrations of WM for high LET radiation from the boron neutron capture reaction. The increases observed reached a maximum of approximately 2-fold in comparison with the respective controls. WM, however, had a more pronounced effect on (60)Co gamma-radiation-induced micronuclei, increasing the genotoxic damage from this radiation by approximately 3- to 4-fold. These results are in general in agreement with the concept that DSBs induced by high LET radiation are not a more suitable substrate for the end joining processes mediated by DNA-PK, yet they do not preclude a role for DNA-PK in high LET-induced damage repair.

Abstract
The STAR Collaboration reports the first observation of exclusive rho(0) photoproduction, AuAu-->AuAurho(0), and rho(0) production accompanied by mutual nuclear Coulomb excitation, AuAu-->Au*Au*rho(0), in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions. The rho(0) have low transverse momenta, consistent with coherent coupling to both nuclei. The cross sections at sqrt[s(NN)]=130 GeV agree with theoretical predictions treating rho(0) production and Coulomb excitation as independent processes.

Abstract
Inclusive transverse momentum distributions of charged hadrons within 0.2<p(T)<6.0 GeV/c have been measured over a broad range of centrality for Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=130 GeV. Hadron yields are suppressed at high p(T) in central collisions relative to peripheral collisions and to a nucleon-nucleon reference scaled for collision geometry. Peripheral collisions are not suppressed relative to the nucleon-nucleon reference. The suppression varies continuously at intermediate centralities. The results indicate significant nuclear medium effects on high-p(T) hadron production in heavy-ion collisions at high energy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The inhibitory action of glucocorticoids on the hypothalamic-pituitary axis is disrupted in ACTH-secreting pituitary tumours. The molecular events leading to the development of these tumours and their relative resistance to glucocorticoids are unknown. We investigated the presence of mutations and polymorphisms of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) gene in corticotropinoma and their possible relationship with the tissue-specific resistance to glucocorticoids. DESIGN AND METHODS DNA or RNA was extracted from 18 corticotropinomas and the GR gene was amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or reverse transcriptase-PCR followed by automated direct sequencing. RESULTS We did not identify any mutation in the coding region and the exon-intron boundary regions of the GR gene. The polymorphism AAT > AGT at codon 363 (N363S) was found in 17% and the polymorphism AAT > AAC at codon 766 (N766N) in 11% of tumours, both in heterozygous state. The polymorphisms at codons 22 and 23, at introns 3 and 4, and at codon 618, previously described in normal population, were not observed. CONCLUSIONS Our results show that GR gene mutations are rare and unlikely to contribute to the glucocorticoid resistance observed in corticotropinomas. Polymorphisms in the GR gene might confer a selective advantage to tumorigenesis in corticotropinoma. However, there was no relationship between GR gene polymorphism and clinical presentation, tumour size or surgery outcome, suggesting that tumour growth may not be directly related to alterations of the GR gene structure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypopituitarism may occur in patients with midline cerebral defects (MCD), including septo-optic dysplasia (SOD). HESX1 gene mutations have been associated with SOD. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the endocrine, ophthalmological and neuroradiographic abnormalities in 18 patients with MCD and SOD without mutations at the HESX1 locus. STUDY DESIGN The diagnosis of hypothalamic and pituitary abnormalities was confirmed by clinical findings and basal hormone values or functional tests. All patients underwent ophthalmological examination and neuroradiologic studies by MRI. RESULTS The diagnosis of hypothalamic and pituitary abnormalities varied from 3 days to 13 years. Endocrine abnormalities were found in 88% of the patients: GH deficiency (72%), hypothyroidism (66%), hypogonadism (45%), diabetes insipidus (27%), adrenal insufficiency (10%), and precocious puberty (5%). Psychomotor retardation was observed in 55% and seizures in 22%. Visual status varied from normal to blindness. MRI confirmed heterogeneous intracranial malformations. CONCLUSIONS Our data support the need for systematic and periodic endocrine evaluation of patients with MCD using a multidisciplinary approach.

Abstract
We report STAR results on the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v(2) for strange particles K(0)(S), Lambda, and Lambda at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=130 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The value of v(2) as a function of transverse momentum, p(t), of the produced particle and collision centrality is presented for both particles up to p(t) approximately 3.0 GeV/c. A strong p(t) dependence in v(2) is observed up to 2.0 GeV/c. The v(2) measurement is compared with hydrodynamic model calculations. The physics implications of the p(t) integrated v(2) magnitude as a function of particle mass are also discussed.

Abstract
The central nervous system plays an important role in the control of renal sodium excretion. We present here a brief review of physiologic regulation of hydromineral balance and discuss recent results from our laboratory that focus on the participation of nitrergic, vasopressinergic, and oxytocinergic systems in the regulation of water and sodium excretion under different salt intake and hypertonic blood volume expansion (BVE) conditions. High sodium intake induced a significant increase in nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity in the medial basal hypothalamus and neural lobe, while a low sodium diet decreased NOS activity in the neural lobe, suggesting that central NOS is involved in the control of sodium balance. An increase in plasma concentrations in vasopressin (AVP), oxytocin (OT), atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), and nitrate after hypertonic BVE was also demonstrated. The central inhibition of NOS by L-NAME caused a decrease in plasma AVP and no change in plasma OT or ANP levels after BVE. These data indicate that the increase in AVP release after hypertonic BVE depends on nitric oxide production. In contrast, the pattern of OT secretion was similar to that of ANP secretion, supporting the view that OT is a neuromodulator of ANP secretion during hypertonic BVE. Thus, neurohypophyseal hormones and ANP are secreted under hypertonic BVE in order to correct the changes induced in blood volume and osmolality, and the secretion of AVP in this particular situation depends on NOS activity.

Abstract
Although it is widely used in everyday activities and in several professions such as locution, shorthand and stenography among others, the magnitude speed of speech does not have a precise meaning in everyday use. Such precision is fundamental in the context of the study of the typical behaviour of a large set of language allophones as the basic components for robust speech synthesis. No information was found for Spanish and less for the variant spoken in Uruguay and the center and south of Argentina, usually called Riverplatean Spanish. This article presents a quantitative characterization of the intuitive notions of fast, slow and normal speech speed. The article reports research with strong experimental foundation since its conclusions were obtained from 120 texts uttered by different speakers at different speeds in a context free of any sort of conditioning. More than a half of the texts were collected from public sources and from people who never knew they were being recorded for this purpose.

Abstract
We report the first measurement of strange (Lambda) and antistrange (Lambda macro) baryon production from square root of [s(NN)]=130 GeV Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Rapidity density and transverse mass distributions at midrapidity are presented as a function of centrality. The yield of Lambda and Lambda; hyperons is found to be approximately proportional to the number of negative hadrons. The production of Lambda; hyperons relative to negative hadrons increases very rapidly with transverse momentum. The magnitude of the increase cannot be described by existing hadronic string fragmentation models alone.

Abstract
Adenylosuccinate lyase deficiency is an autosomal recessive defect of purine metabolism. Succinyladenosine (S-Ado) and succinylaminoimidazole carboxamide riboside (SAICAr) are the disease marker metabolites in physiological fluids. The Bratton-Marshall test for detection of SAICAr in urine has been added to the selective screening for inborn errors of metabolism that is carried out in our lab. During the last three years, around 2,000 patients have been screened by this method, resulting in the detection of four new cases with this disease. They all presented with severe psychomotor delay, hypotonia and refractory epilepsy since the neonatal period. The S-Ado/SAICAr ratio in cerebrospinal fluid was below 2, indicating that they correspond to the most severe form of the disease. New missense mutations were found in a heterozygous fashion in three patients. The study of purines in all patients with neurological disease of unknown etiology is highly recommended.

Abstract
Prosthesis loosening is a major problem associated with the use of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement that may be related to a peri-implant vacuolisation commonly observed at bone-cement interface. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer may be one of the cement components partly responsible for the mentioned vacuolisation due to a cytotoxic effect associated to this compound. Alcoholism has been related to bone necrosis in predisposed individuals. Furthermore, ethanol has been shown to clean material with adherent cement debris during cleaning procedure in laboratory. Consequently, we have decided to study whether ethanol will also be related to an increased liberation of MMA from the polymer matrix. 'In vitro' release studies using PMMA plates were conducted to access the role of ethanol on the liberation of the monomer. Contact angle measurements and surface tension estimation were also carried out in order to find a possible effect of ethanol on surface cement properties. Results suggest that ethanol, even in small quantities, enhances the leaching of the monomer from the polymer matrix, but does not considerably change the wettability properties of the cement surface.

Abstract
AIM To assess the efficacy and safety of azathioprine in a paediatric population with inflammatory bowel disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS One hundred and twenty-three Italian children treated with azathioprine were studied retrospectively. The treatment duration and causes of its discontinuation, side-effects and variation in corticosteroid dose were assessed. RESULTS The mean age at inflammatory bowel disease diagnosis was 9.8 +/- 3.6 years, and at the start of azathioprine therapy 11.8 +/- 4.3 years. The mean duration of treatment was 19 +/- 16 months. Fifty patients (41%) stopped treatment due to surgery (12%), prolonged remission (11%), non-response (7%), severe side-effects (7%) and poor compliance (3%). Of the 73 patients (59%) remaining on azathioprine, 11 had never been treated with corticosteroids, 27 were able to stop them and 35 were still on a very low daily dose (91% < 0.3 mg/kg). The difference in the daily corticosteroid dose between the beginning of azathioprine treatment (1 +/- 0.6 mg/kg) and the conclusion of the study (0.18 +/- 0.16 mg/kg) was statistically significant. Side-effects were recorded in 48 of the 123 patients (39%), but only eight required discontinuation of azathioprine. CONCLUSIONS Azathioprine was efficacious in 70% of patients, but ineffective in 20% and induced severe toxicity in 7%. Corticosteroids were stopped or markedly reduced in 62% of patients, but they were never given in 9%.
