Abstract
Three-dimensional entanglement of orbital angular momentum states of an atomic qutrit and a single photon qutrit has been observed. Their full state was reconstructed using quantum state tomography. The fidelity to the maximally entangled state of Schmidt rank 3 exceeds the threshold 2/3. This result confirms that the density matrix cannot be decomposed into an ensemble of pure states of Schmidt rank 1 or 2. That is, the Schmidt number of the density matrix must be equal to or greater than 3.

Abstract
Extensive studies on polymer thin films to date have revealed their interesting but unusual properties such as film thickness dependence of glass transition temperature Tg and thermal expansivity. Recent studies have shown that the lower Tg is not always related to the higher mobility in polymer thin films, which contradicts our current understanding of the glass transition process. In this work, we report the results of inelastic neutron-scattering measurements on polystyrene thin films using two spectrometers with different energy resolutions as well as ellipsometry measurements. The results are interpreted in terms of cooperatively rearranging region and motional slowing down due to the surface effect that explain plausibly the anomalous relationship between the glass transition temperature Tg and the molecular mobility in thin films.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) allows three-dimensional imaging of the optic disc. The objective of this study was to compare optic disc and cup margins between fundus photographs and SD-OCT. PATIENTS AND METHODS Eighteen eyes with glaucoma were examined by a custom-built SD-OCT OCT fundus images were used to register fundus photographs and SD-OCT volume. RESULTS Disc margins on fundus photographs corresponded to termination of the highly reflective straight line that represented the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) or the highly reflective curved line that connected to the RPE on the OCT B-scan images at 99.3% of the positions along the disc edges. Cup margins on fundus photographs corresponded at 73.6% of the positions to the interior border of the hyporeflective regions on the OCT fundus images. CONCLUSIONS Excellent to fair correspondence in the determination of disc and cup margins between fundus photographs and SD-OCT images was shown.

Abstract
It is reported that some, but not all, bacteria in human faeces are coated with secretory immunoglobulin A (S-IgA). We evaluated the proportion of S-IgA-coated bacteria to total intestinal bacteria (S-IgA coating ratio) in the gastrointestinal tract of two different strains of mice supplied by two different suppliers. The S-IgA coating ratio was significantly different in each gastrointestinal segment and between mouse suppliers. The amount of non-bacteria-bound IgA (free IgA) in each gastrointestinal segment indicated that this difference in the S-IgA coating ratio might not be due to the amount of secreted IgA. Furthermore, immunoblotting analysis revealed that only a small amount of IgA (<5% to free-IgA) was used for the coating. This indicates that, although sufficient S-IgA was secreted to coat the entire intestinal population of bacteria, only some part of the bacteria were coated with S-IgA. This study suggests that the amount of luminal S-IgA may not determine the S-IgA coating ratio, and that the amount of IgA coating intestinal commensal bacteria is very small.

Abstract
The skeletal muscle is one of the important target tissues for the actions of estrogen via both nuclear and extranuclear (non-genomic) pathways. However, there is a paucity of information about the receptor (ER) involved. The aim of this study was thus to explore the ER expression in skeletal muscle, and the influence of estrogen on it, by using C2C12 myoblasts derived from mouse skeletal muscle. Significant expression of a approximately 66-kD protein immunoreactive to ER type alpha (ERalpha) monoclonal antibody, which was comparable to that in ovary, was detected in the whole-cell (total) and nucleus-free (nonnuclear) fractions of C2C12 myoblasts. The expression level of these ER proteins increased in several hours with treatment with 17beta-estradiol (E2), which was preceded by the elevation of the ER mRNA level. This increase appeared to reflect the acceleration of de novo synthesis of ER protein, as proved by the (35)S-methionine immunoprecipitation method. A similar extent of fast increase in ER expression was also induced by a membrane-impermeable, BSA-conjugated estradiol (E2-BSA). Unexpectedly, the E2-induced increases in total and nonnuclear ER were further enhanced by the classic ER antagonists tamoxifen and ICI182,780 in a wide concentration range, implying some structural difference of the involved ER from the classical one. Treatment with the ERK1/2 inhibitor, PD98059 (10 microM), or the p38 MAPK-specific inhibitor, SB203580 (10 microM), greatly inhibited the E2-induced ER increase, while the protein kinase C (PKC) activator TPA (1 microM) enhanced it. These results collectively suggest that C2C12 skeletal myoblasts express a high level of ER, a considerable part of which is extranuclear. Further, the expression of ER in these cells may be significantly upregulated by estrogen itself via increased biosynthesis linked to membrane-bound ER and downstream MAPK-mediated signaling pathways.

Abstract
The development of the intestinal microbiota and the evolution of the fecal IgA in mice were analyzed from 18 to 40 days old by PCR temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE) and ELISA, respectively. There were two events for the diversification of the intestinal microbiota from suckling to maturity. The first change occurred between days 21 and 22 after birth, when the diversity of the intestinal microbiota showed a remarkable increase at this time. The second change occurred from days 27 to 30 after birth, and the increase in the diversity of the intestinal microbiota ceased. The amount of fecal IgA decreased from days 18 to 20, remained low until day 22, on day 23, it recovered and then continued to increase. This study suggests that there are possible interactions between the development of intestinal microbiota and the evolution of intestinal secretion of IgA in mice, the same as in rats, although the second change in mice intestinal microbiota occurred a few days later than in rats. The decline in maternal IgA supply as the suckling period proceeded presumably allowed the bacterial colonization. As a consequence of this increase in bacterial colonization, the secretion of the self-SIgA was accelerated in the pups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the appearance of the optic nerve head and lamina cribrosa in patients with glaucoma using spectral/Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and to test for a correlation between lamina cribrosa thickness measured on SD-OCT images and visual field loss. DESIGN Observational case series. PARTICIPANTS We evaluated 52 eyes of 30 patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension. METHODS The high-speed SD-OCT equipment used was a prototype system developed for 3-dimensional (3D) imaging. It had a sensitivity of 98 decibels (dB), a tissue axial resolution of 4.3 mum, and an acquisition rate of approximately 18,700 axial scans per second. For 3D analyses, a raster scan protocol of 256 x 256 axial scans covering a 2.8 x 2.8 mm disc area was used. Lamina cribrosa thickness was measured on 3D images using 3D image processing software. Correlation between lamina cribrosa thickness and mean deviation (MD) values obtained using static automatic perimetry were tested for statistical significance. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Clarity of lamina cribrosa features, lamina cribrosa thickness, and MD values on static automatic perimetry. RESULTS On 3D images, the lamina cribrosa appeared clearly as a highly reflective plate that was bowed posteriorly and contained many circular areas of low reflectivity. The dots of low reflectivity visible just beneath the anterior surface of the lamina cribrosa in en face cross-sections corresponded with dots representing lamina pores in color fundus photographs. The mean (+/-1 standard deviation) thickness of the lamina cribrosa was 190.5+/-52.7 mum (range, 80.5-329.0). Spearman rank testing and linear regression analysis showed that lamina cribrosa thickness correlated significantly with MD (Spearman sigma = 0.744; P<0.001; r(2) = 0.493; P<0.001). Different observers performed measurements of the lamina cribrosa thickness in SD-OCT cross-sectional images with high reproducibility (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.784). CONCLUSIONS These 3D SD-OCT imaging clearly demonstrated the 3D structure of the lamina cribrosa and allowed measurement of its thickness, which correlated significantly with visual field loss, in living patients with glaucoma. This noninvasive imaging technique should facilitate investigations of structural changes in the optic nerve head lamina cribrosa in eyes with optic nerve damage due to glaucoma. Abstract
PURPOSE To examine retinal sensitivity in the macular area of eyes with resolved central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). DESIGN Retrospective chart review. METHODS We studied retrospectively the medical records of 21 patients (21 eyes) with resolved CSC. Using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), 6 x 6-mm areas of macula were examined with 256 sequential horizontal scans. Microperimetry in the macular area was performed with the Micro Perimeter 1 (Nidek, Vigonza, Italy). Seventy-two measurement points were located within the central 10 degrees of the macula. RESULTS In eyes with resolved CSC, most OCT images showed a physiologically normal appearance. However, irregularities of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) were detected in 11 eyes, and focal defects of the junctions between inner and outer segments (IS/OS) of the photoreceptors were noted in 15 eyes. These abnormalities often were seen within the foveal region. At 983 (79.8%) of 1,232 points with intact retina, retinal sensitivity was 16 decibels (dB) or better. However, a retinal sensitivity of 16 dB or better was obtained at 34.0% of points with irregular RPE and in 20.0% of points with defects of the IS/OS. The mean retinal sensitivities within the area with irregular RPE (13.4 +/- 4.8 dB) or with defects of the IS/OS (11.5 +/- 4.2 dB) were significantly lower than that of intact retina (17.5 +/- 2.4 dB; P < .0001). CONCLUSIONS Eyes with resolved CSC often show focal areas with reduced retinal function, which are consistent with irregularity of the RPE or with defects of the IS/OS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-measured blood pressure (BP) at home (HBP) has a stronger predictive power for cardiovascular mortality and morbidity than casual-screening BP (CBP). No studies have evaluated the clinical significance of self-measured HBP for diagnosing metabolic syndrome (MS). Eight scientific associations recently defined MS for the Japanese population. However, this definition remains controversial, especially with respect to the cutoff value of waist circumference (WC) being higher in women than in men. METHODS The: participants of this population-based survey were the 395 residents (> or =35 years of age) of Ohasama, a rural Japanese community. They measured HBP and underwent the oral glucose tolerance test between the years 2000 and 2006. We calculated the optimal cutoff values of WC required to diagnose MS, and examined the association of HBP with metabolic risk-factor clustering using multivariate analyses. RESULTS Receiver operation characteristic analysis indicated that the optimal WC cutoff values for identifying clusters of metabolic risk factors were 87 and 80 cm in men and women, respectively. Elevated HBP was significantly associated with the clustering of metabolic risk factors but CBP was not. CONCLUSION The appropriate WC cutoff value in the current MS criteria for Japanese women would be 80 cm. We suggest that HBP would be useful when considering a diagnosis of MS. The association between MS determined using HBP and the prognosis of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) requires further investigation.

Abstract
Mikulicz's disease (MD) is gaining acceptance as an immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease characterized by bilateral lacrimal and salivary gland swelling. The aetiology of MD and other IgG4-related diseases is still unclear. The present work was performed to study the clonality of infiltrating IgG4-positive plasma cells in lacrimal glands and circulating peripheral blood cells in patients with MD, and compare the clonal relationship between infiltrating and circulating IgG4 positive cells. Total cellular RNA was extracted from the lacrimal glands and peripheral blood in five MD patients. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was performed with primers specific for activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) and for Ig VH and IgG4. Sequences of Ig VH were compared with the structure of Ig VH of the lacrimal glands and the peripheral blood cells. AID was expressed to varying degrees in lacrimal glands of all MD patients. Most IgG4-positive cells infiltrating lacrimal glands and in peripheral blood were polyclonal, although several clonally related pairs were detected. In one patient, two of the circulating IgG4 VH4-59 clones shared identical CDR3 sequences with the clones within the lacrimal glands. In conclusion, while most tissue-infiltrating and circulating IgG4-positive cells in MD are polyclonal, some clonally related IgG4 positive cells exist between lacrimal gland and peripheral blood, accounting for the clinical features of MD as an IgG4-related disease involving multiple organs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Microalbuminuria is recognized as a marker of generalized vascular dysfunction. However, the associations between microalbuminuria and pulse wave velocity (PWV), carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), and ambulatory blood pressure (ABP), respectively, have not been investigated. METHODS Brachial-ankle PWV (baPWV), IMT, and ABP were determined in 328 individuals (mean age, 65.7 +/- 6.4 years) from the general population of Ohasama, a rural Japanese community. The participants were assigned to groups with microalbuminuria and with normoalbuminuria, and their characteristics were compared. We also examined the association between microalbuminuria and baPWV, IMT, and ABP, respectively, using multivariate analyses. RESULTS Seventy-nine participants (24%) with microalbuminuria had significantly higher baPWV (P < 0.001) and 24-h systolic BP (SBP) (P = 0.006) than those with normoalbuminuria, although 24-h pulse pressure and mean IMT did not significantly differ between the groups. Multiple logistic regression analyses showed that baPWV, but not 24-h ABP, was independently associated with microalbuminuria (P = 0.002) when adjusted for various confounding factors. After further adjustment for 24-h SBP, the association between baPWV and microalbuminuria remained significant (P = 0.012). The trend was significant even when daytime or nighttime SBP was used instead of 24-hour SBP in this model. CONCLUSIONS Microalbuminuria appears to be associated with baPWV more closely than with IMT and ABP, and its association with baPWV is independent of ABP and other cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract
Although there have been many fascinating studies on cryptdins, the information for each cryptdin isoform was not completely provided. In this study, the postnatal changes in the gene expression of cryptdin 1-6 were evaluated, and the patterns of change were compared between conventional and germ-free mice. Two patterns of postnatal change were observed: gene expression of cryptdins 1, 3 and 6 increased gradually, and that of cryptdins 2 and 5 increased rapidly. Gene expression of cryptdin 4 increased gradually in the ileum but rapidly in the jejunum. Conventional mice showed significantly higher gene expression for all isoforms than germ-free mice. Interestingly, the difference in the gene expression for cryptdin 2, 4 and 5 between the jejunum and ileum seemed to be increased by the presence of the luminal bacteria. The results indicate that cryptdin isoforms develop differently depending on the isoform type, and that the gene expression of all cryptdin isoforms was affected by the presence of the luminal bacteria.

Abstract
We studied the dynamic anisotropy and heterogeniety of polystyrene thin films in glassy state with inelastic neutorn scattering. Adjusting the scattering vector to the directions parallel and perpendicular to the film surface, we observed the elastic scattering intensities as a function of temperature. It was found for the 200 A film that the elastic intesity decreased with increasing temperature more rapidly in the perpendicular direction than in the pararell direction, showing the higher mobility in the perpendicular direction. However, such dynamical anisotropy was not observed in the 1000 A film. The decrease in the mobility was observed with the film thickness in both the directions. These results were explained in terms of an interface hard layer. We also evelauated the dynamical heterogeniety from the non-Gaussian parameter A0, which increased with decreasing the film thickness, showing the increase in the dynamical heterogeneity. Assuming a simple bi-layer model consisting of the interface hard layer and the bulk-like layer, we analyzed the thickness dependence of the non-Gaussian parameter A0 and the mean square displacement (u2) to find that the hard layer has a thickness of approximately 130 A and a mean square displacement of approximately 0.018 A2 at 230 K.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) plays a pivotal role in regulation of cellular functions, the evidence often relying on the effects of extracelluarly administered drugs such as ML-9. Here we report that this compound exerts non-specific inhibitory actions on the TRPC6 channel, a transient receptor potential (TRP) protein. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Macroscopic and single channel currents were recorded from transfected HEK293 cells by patch-clamp techniques. KEY RESULTS Cationic currents elicited by carbachol (CCh; 100 microM) in HEK293 cells overexpressing murine TRPC6 (I(TRPC6)) were dose-dependently inhibited by externally applied ML-9 (IC(50)=7.8 microM). This inhibition was voltage-dependent and occurred as fast as external Na(+) removal. Another MLCK inhibitor, wortmannin (3 microM), and MLCK inhibitory peptides MLCK-IP(11-19) (10 microM) and -IP(480-501) (1 microM) showed little effects on I(TRPC6) density and the inhibitory efficacy of ML-9. The extent of the inhibition also unchanged with co-expression of wild-type or a dominant negative mutant of MLCK. Inhibitory effects of ML-9 on I(TRPC6) remained unaffected whether TRPC6 was activated constitutively or by a diacylglycerol analogue OAG (100 microM). Similar rapid inhibition was also observed with a ML-9 relative, ML-7. Intracellular perfusion of ML-9 via patch pipette, dose-dependently suppressed I(TRPC6). In inside-out patch configuration, bath application of ML-9 (and ML-7) rapidly diminished approximately 35pS single TRPC6 channel activities. Contrarily, currents due to TRPC7 expression were rapidly enhanced by externally applied ML-9 and ML-7, which was not prevented by MLCK inhibitory peptides. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS These results strongly suggest that ML compounds inhibit TRPC6 channels via a mechanism independent of inhibition of MLCK activity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the 3-dimensional (3-D) imaging of the pathologic changes in the foveal photoreceptor layer in eyes with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) using high-speed optical coherence tomography (OCT). DESIGN Prospective observational case series. PARTICIPANTS Twenty-seven eyes of 27 consecutive patients with various stages of CSC. METHODS A prototype high-speed OCT system was fabricated for patient examinations based on Fourier domain OCT. The system had a sensitivity of 98 dB, a tissue axial resolution of 4.3 mum, and an acquisition rate of approximately 18700 axial scans per second. Three-dimensional imaging was performed based on a raster-scan protocol. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Anatomic features of CSC distinguished by 3-D OCT. RESULTS A line corresponding to backreflection from the external limiting membrane (ELM) was visible in images from eyes with all stages of CSC, including 6 in the acute, 5 in the chronic, and 9 in the recurrent phase of retinal detachment and 11 examined in the quiescent phase (including 4 reexamined after reattachment). Backreflection from the photoreceptor inner and outer segment junction (IS/OS) was missing before but present after reattachment. The ELM line bordered the photoreceptor nuclear and inner segment layers, clearly showing that CSC primarily alters the outer segment (OS) layer. Punctate areas of intense reflectivity were observed more frequently in the OS layer of detached retinas in cases of chronic or recurrent versus acute CSC (P<0.05, chi-square test). Of 11 eyes with reattached macula, 3 eyes with large defects in the subfoveal IS/OS had poor visual acuity (VA), and 8 eyes with small or no defects had good VA (P<0.05 and P<0.001, chi-square test). Decreases in foveal full and outer thickness were associated with VA loss (P<0.05 and P<0.001, Spearman rank correlation test). CONCLUSIONS Three-dimensional OCT imaging delineates the microstructural changes that occur within the photoreceptor layers and demonstrates the spatial relationship between the laterally spreading or scattering microstructures and the fovea in eyes with CSC. Visualization of the 3-D relationship between the ELM and each photoreceptor layer before and after macular reattachment facilitates understanding of anatomic and vision changes that result from CSC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We report on a case of cerebral sparganosis that was correctly identified by a biopsy 10 years after the initial infection. CASE DESCRIPTION A 62-year-old man presented with an unusual case of cerebral sparganosis mansoni. He was admitted to our hospital for removal of a right frontal meningioma. Computed tomographic scan and MRI of the brain showed atrophy of the left cerebral hemisphere, enlargement of the lateral ventricle, and several small ring-enhanced lesions in the left frontal lobe. The patient had suffered from motor aphasia and right hemiparesis for 10 years; in addition, he had been treated for cerebral infarction. We performed a left frontal biopsy, during which we also removed the meningioma. The histologic diagnosis was cerebral sparganosis mansoni. CONCLUSIONS The follow-up CT findings after the patient's first attack were thought to be characteristic of cerebral sparganosis mansoni. However, the radiographic findings were difficult to differentiate from those of neoplasias.
