Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of ferrous lactate infusion on postruminal P absorption in lactating dairy cows. Four ruminally cannulated lactating cows were used in a 4×4 Latin square design with 14 d per period. Cows were fed a basal diet containing 0.39% P, providing 100% of the calculated P requirement. On d 8 to 14 of each period, each cow was infused with 0, 200, 500, or 1,250mg of Fe/d in the form of ferrous lactate solution (ferrous lactate in 1L of double-distilled water) into the abomasum. Infusate was formulated to approximate 0, 2, 5, or 12.5mg of Fe/L in drinking water with 100L of water intake/d. Total fecal collection was conducted in the last 4 d of each period to measure nutrient digestion and excretion. Dry matter intake, milk yield, and milk composition were not affected by treatment. Digestibility of DM, NDF, and nitrogen decreased linearly with increasing ferrous lactate infusion. Infusion of ferrous lactate did not affect intake and digestibility of total P, inorganic P, or phytate P. In lactating cows, P absorption was not negatively influenced by abomasally infused ferrous lactate up to 1,250mg of Fe/d.

Abstract
Although there is growing consensus that population-level improvements in cardiovascular health depend upon environments that promote healthy lifestyles, evidence to support large-scale investments in neighborhood greenery to tackle obesity is inconsistent and has not focused on adults in middle-to-old age who experience the greatest burden of chronic health problems. Multilevel linear and multinomial logit regression models were fitted to investigate association between body mass index and an objective measure of green space in a sample of 246,920 Australian adults aged 45 years and older (The 45 and Up Study). Proximity to green space was constructed using catchment areas of 1 km radius around each participant. Women with over 80% proximity to green space had relative risk ratios of 0.90 (95% confidence interval: 0.83, 0.97) for overweight and 0.83 (0.74, 0.94) for obese. No similarly protective association was found for men. These results were consistent after controlling for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sitting time, each of which was favorably associated with green space proximity in men and women. Large-scale investments to enhance green spaces may promote MVPA and reduce sedentary behavior in middle-to-older-aged adults, but the impact on obesity may not benefit everyone to the same extent.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Existing thiazolidinedione (TZD) drugs for diabetes have severe side effects. The aim of this study is to develop alternative peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) ligands that retain the benefits in improving insulin resistance but with reduced side effects. METHODS We used AlphaScreen assay to screen for new PPARγ ligands from compound libraries. In vitro biochemical binding affinity assay and in vivo cell-based reporter assay were used to validate ionomycin as a partial ligand of PPARγ. A mouse model of diabetes was used to assess the effects of ionomycin in improving insulin sensitivity. Crystal structure of PPARγ complexed with ionomycin revealed the unique binding mode of ionomycin, which elucidated the molecular mechanisms allowing the discrimination of ionomycin from TZDs. RESULTS We found that the antibiotic ionomycin is a novel modulating ligand for PPARγ. Both the transactivation and binding activity of PPARγ by ionomycin can be blocked by PPARγ specific antagonist GW9662. Ionomycin interacts with the PPARγ ligand-binding domain in a unique binding mode with properties and epitopes distinct from those of TZD drugs. Ionomycin treatment effectively improved hyperglycaemia and insulin resistance, but had reduced side effects compared with TZDs in the mouse model of diabetes. In addition, ionomycin effectively blocked the phosphorylation of PPARγ at Ser273 by cyclin-dependent kinase 5 both in vitro and in vivo. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Our studies suggest that ionomycin may represent a unique template for designing novel PPARγ ligands with advantages over current TZD drugs.

Abstract
A current-pulse-induced enhancement effect of transient photovoltage has been discovered in tilted manganite La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3) film at room temperature. Here, by applying a pulsed current stimulus before pulse laser irradiation, we observed a significant enhancement of more than 50% in photovoltaic sensitivity. The current-pulse-induced photovoltaic enhancement can be tuned not only by the stimulating current value but also by the stimulating time. Such enhancement is time-sensitive and reproducible. This electrically induced effect, observed at room temperature, has both the benefit of a discovery in materials properties and the promise of applications for thin film manganites in photodetectors.

Abstract
this paper presents the design and implementation of a suite of computer-assisted rehabilitation platform techniques that are intended especially for individuals with upper-extremity motor impairments. It utilizes force-reflecting and other devices to provide interactive upper limb assessment and therapy. It includes a rich menu of user-centered performance assessment capabilities, and includes support for telerehabilitation links, for protocol design, and for data analysis. Preliminary results of its use as a research tool for several projects are presented and discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We previously found plasma levels of CD40 ligand (CD40L), chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 5 (CXCL5), chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 5 (CCL5) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) to be low in aplastic anemia (AA) patients and to be correlated with platelet count. OBJECTIVES To study the association of CD40L, CXCL5, CCL5 and EGF with platelets. METHODS We measured cytokines in the plasma of immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and AA patients using the Luminex assay and confirmed the results in a mouse model and in vitro experiments. RESULTS Both ITP and AA showed similarly low levels of CD40L, CXCL5, CCL5 and EGF, compared with healthy controls. In ITP, levels of these proteins were significantly greater in patients with higher platelet counts than in those with lower platelet counts. In a murine thrombocytopenia model, levels of CD40L, CXCL5, CCL5 and EGF decreased with platelet count after immune-mediated destruction, while the cytokine levels increased when the platelet count recovered. In vitro, concentrations of these cytokines in the supernatants of platelet suspensions were proportional to platelet numbers, and levels in sera prepared by simple blood coagulation were equivalent to those in platelet-rich plasma-converted sera. mRNA expression for CXCL5, CCL5 and EGF was higher in platelets than in megakaryocytes, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, granulocytes and non-megakaryocytic bone marrow cells. CONCLUSIONS Plasma CD40L, CXCL5, CCL5 and EGF are mainly platelet-derived, suggesting a role of platelets in immune responses and inflammation. Measurement of CD40L, CXCL5, CCL5 and EGF in human blood allowed testable inferences concerning physiology and pathophysiology in quantitative platelet disorders.
