Abstract
The contribution of B meson decays to nonphotonic electrons, which are mainly produced by the semileptonic decays of heavy-flavor mesons, in p + p collisions at √s=200 GeV has been measured using azimuthal correlations between nonphotonic electrons and hadrons. The extracted B decay contribution is approximately 50% at a transverse momentum of pT≥5 GeV/c. These measurements constrain the nuclear modification factor for electrons from B and D meson decays. The result indicates that B meson production in heavy ion collisions is also suppressed at high pT.

Abstract
We report the first measurements of the kurtosis (κ), skewness (S), and variance (σ2) of net-proton multiplicity (Np-Np) distributions at midrapidity for Au+Au collisions at square root of s(NN)=19.6, 62.4, and 200 GeV corresponding to baryon chemical potentials (μB) between 200 and 20 MeV. Our measurements of the products κσ2 and Sσ, which can be related to theoretical calculations sensitive to baryon number susceptibilities and long-range correlations, are constant as functions of collision centrality. We compare these products with results from lattice QCD and various models without a critical point and study the square root of s(NN) dependence of κσ2. From the measurements at the three beam energies, we find no evidence for a critical point in the QCD phase diagram for μB below 200 MeV.

Abstract
BACKGROUND extranodal natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma (ENKL) is a heterogeneous entity with poor survival, requiring risk stratification in affected patients. We proposed absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) as a new prognostic factor in ENKL. PATIENTS AND METHODS we retrospectively analyzed 128 patients newly diagnosed with ENKL. Independent prognostic factors of survival were determined by Cox regression analysis. RESULTS patients with low ALC (<1.0 × 10(9)/l) at diagnosis tended to have more adverse clinical features. Patients with high ALC (≥1.0 × 10(9)/l) at diagnosis had better overall survival (OS; P < 0.0001) and progression-free survival (PFS; P<0.0001), and achieved higher complete remission rates (P=0.001). Multivariate analysis with known prognostic factors showed that ALC, B symptoms and advanced stage were independent predictors for OS and PFS. Using the International Prognostic Index, Prognostic Index for Peripheral T-cell lymphoma unspecified, or Korean Prognostic Index for nasal NK/T-cell lymphoma, the majority of patients were in the low-risk category (with no or one adverse factor). ALC was helpful to differentiate the low-risk patients with different survival outcomes (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS our data suggest that ALC at diagnosis is a novel, powerful predictor of prognosis in ENKL. Immune status at diagnosis might have an important influence on survival in patients with ENKL.

Abstract
Deregulation of the pRB/E2F pathway, which occurs frequently in human malignancy, is often associated with inappropriate proliferation and/or apoptosis. While the role of E2F1 in apoptosis induction has been well-established, it remains unclear how this pro-apoptotic activity is regulated in cancer. Here we describe EZH2, an oncogenic polycomb histone methyltransferase and an E2F1 target, as an important regulator of E2F1-dependent apoptosis. We show that E2F1 induces EZH2 expression, which in turn antagonizes the induction of E2F1 pro-apoptotic target Bim expression. RNAi-mediated gene depletion of EZH2 enhances E2F1-dependent Bim expression, thereby promoting the pro-apoptotic activity of E2F1. Hence, the concomitant induction of EZH2 and Bim by E2F1 constitutes a fail-safe mechanism to allow tumor cells with aberrant E2F1 activity to evade apoptosis. These findings reveal a novel mechanism by which the apoptotic activity of E2F1 is restrained in human cancer and also provide the first evidence that EZH2 directly regulates apoptotic process in cancer cells.

Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health problem, and successful genetic manipulation of mycobacteria is crucial for developing new approaches to study the mechanism of pathogenesis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) and to combat TB. In this study, a series of M.tb furA gene operator/promoter (pfurA) mutants were generated aiming at optimization of the promoter activities in mycobacterial strains. Measured by the lacZ gene-fusion reporter system, change of the initial codon GTG to the preferred ATG resulted in a double increase of beta-galactosidase activity, while a 6-bp substitution in the conserved FurA binding AT-rich region upstream of furA gene led to 4-6 folds increase of the activity. It is significant that combination of both mutations showed about 10 folds of beta-galactosidase activity higher than that of the prototype pfurA. Furthermore, all of the furA promoters were expressed continuously in vivo during intracellular growth of Mycobacterium bovis BCG, and were induced early upon infection in macrophages. Employing the series of pfurA-based differential expression vectors, M.tb chimeric antigen Ag856A2 known for its excellent immunogenicity, was shown to be expressed at different levels in the recombinant Mycobacterium smegmatis and BCG strains. These results indicated that this differential expression system is feasible to express any target antigen of interest in a modular fashion for the study of gene regulation in mycobacterial strains, and also for the development of different recombinant BCG vaccine candidates against TB or other infectious diseases, which would be beneficial for elicitation of optimal immune response.
