Seasonal abundance and activity of the tick Dermacentor silvarum in northern China

Studies on the seasonal abundance and activity of larvae, nymphs and adults of Dermacentor silvarum (Ixodida: Ixodidae), both on and off the host, were carried out over a 2-year period from February 2008 to January 2010 in northern China. During the study period, feeding ticks were removed weekly from domestic sheep and free-living ticks were collected weekly by flag-dragging in four different habitat types. Rodents were captured and inspected for immature ticks from June to September 2008. The results of this study suggest that the ticks mainly reside in shrubs and complete only one generation per year with sequential seasonal distribution and little overlap between the activity of the larvae and nymphs. Adults were most prevalent from late February to late May and peaked in number in mid-April. Larvae were found from early June to early September and peaked in number in mid-July. Nymphs were mainly distributed from late June to late September and peaked in mid-August. Adult and nymphal D. silvarum were found primarily on the ears of sheep, but no larvae were found on sheep. Additionally, an overwintering male adult population was detected on sheep after October, but no free-living adults were found by dragging.

Inorganic Gels with Nanometer-Sized Particles

Fundamental issues involving interactions and packing of nanometer-sized particles are being investigated as an extension of previous experimental studies on larger submicron particles and in relationship to general theoretical work on colloidal systems. Relationships between particle interaction energies and packing indicate (1) dense gels can be formed in stable systems by minimization of the hydrodynamic radius and (2) dense clusters can be formed in flocculated systems by the use of weakly attractive particles where particle restructuring occurs. Novel techniques for the formation of nanostructures within polymeric matrices are also introduced to address gel cracking problems.

Mechanical Properties of Colloidal Gels

A colloidal suspension can be either dispersed or flocculated depending on the interaction between the colloidal particles. If the interaction is repulsive, particles can relax to the minimum of the potential due to their neighboring particles, and the system can reach an equilibrium dispersed state. In the case of attractive interaction, particles form aggregates that settle to the bottom of the container. As the concentration of particles is increased, the overcrowding of the aggregates produces a continuous network throughout the suspension before they settle and a colloidal gel is formed. A major difference between a colloidal gel and a colloidal suspension is that the gel can sustain finite stress and is therefore viscoelastic. Previously we studied the storage modulus and the yield strain of boehmite gels and found that they are related to the particle concentration in a power-law fashion [1]. Similar scaling behavior of the shear modulus was found for other colloidal particulate networks by Buscall et al. [2]. We developed a scaling theory [1] which successfully explains the experimental results on boehmite gels. The theory further predicts that there can be two types of power-law behavior depending on the relative elastic strength of the clusters to that of the links between clusters within the gel network. Furthermore, there can be a crossover from one type of behavior to the other as the particle concentration is varied.

Regulation of mixed lineage kinase 3 is required for Neurofibromatosis-2-mediated growth suppression in human cancer

The Neurofibromatosis-2 (NF2) tumor suppressor merlin negatively regulates cell proliferation in numerous cell types. We have previously shown that the NF2 protein (merlin/schwannomin) associates with mixed lineage kinase 3 (MLK3), a mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) kinase kinase that is required for the proliferation of normal and neoplastic cells. In this study, we show that merlin inhibits MLK3 activity, as well as the activation of its downstream effectors, B-Raf, extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK). The ability of merlin to regulate MLK3 activity requires a direct association between MLK3 and residues in the C-terminal region of merlin. Merlin integrates Rho GTPase family signaling with MAPK activity by inhibiting the binding between MLK3 and its upstream activator, Cdc42. Furthermore, we demonstrate that MLK3 is required for merlin-mediated suppression of cell proliferation and invasion. Collectively, these results establish merlin as a potent inhibitor of MLK3, ERK and JNK activation in cancer, and provide a mechanistic link between deregulated MAPK and Rho GTPase signaling in NF2 growth control.

Electron Microscopy Characterization Of Epitaxial Growth Of Ag Deposited On Mgo Microcubes

The crystalline structure, the morphology and the chemistry of small Ag particles vacuum-deposited on preheated MgO microcubes were characterized by in situ and ex situ electron microscopy and surface analysis techniques. Observations were made of the nucleation and growth of Ag clusters on MgO surfaces and along surface steps. It is found that Ag particles deposited onto clean MgO crystals have an epitaxial orientation relationship of (100)Agll(100)MgO with [100]Agll[00]MgO. Prior to air exposure Ag particles are stable under the electron beam but they become unstable upon exposure to air. During electron irradiation on air-exposed samples terraces are formed on the surfaces of MgO cubes, preferentially near Ag particles and at their interfaces with the substrate. The stability of vacuum-deposited Ag particles and the growth of the terraces on MgO microcubes seem to depend on air exposure of the sample.

Raman Characterization of Nitrogen Doped Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes

N-type multi-walled nanotubes were synthesized by nitrogen doping using pyridine and pyridine-melamine mixtures in chemical vapor deposition, and their donor states were verified by Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy. Tunneling Electron Microscopy reveals small amounts of residual catalyst and Scanning Electron Microscopy show well aligned mats of the Nitrogen doped nanotubes. Nitrogen is present in the lattice of these MWNTs as pyridine structures and CNx structures. Raman scattering measurements were performed as a function of increasing growth temperature and the results compared to previously studied boron doped multiwalled nanotubes.

Low K Mesoporous Silica Films Through Template-Based Processing

Low dielectric-constant mesoporous silica films were prepared by condensation of a silicate network around surfactant micellar structures. Adherent, porous films 0.5–1.0 μm in thickness, and containing an ordered assemblage of ≈2 nm diameter pores were synthesized by spin-coating water/ethanol-based solutions containing a silica precursor and surfactant template. In this paper, film deposition conditions are described, and film thickness, porosity, refractive index and dielectric constant measured by ellipsometry are presented. Using a coating solution containing tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and a cationic cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) surfactant template, the film porosity and dielectric properties were controlled over a wide range by adjusting the CTAC/TEOS molar ratio. With the CTAC/TEOS ratio between 0.1 and 0.15, the pores were highly ordered in hexagonal arrays after heat treatment at 550 °C. With a CTAC/TEOS ratio of 0.21, films with a pore volume of ≈64% (≈36 vol% silica) could be synthesized. The measured index of refraction for these highly porous films at 500 nm wavelength was 1.16, indicating that these films are potentially useful as low K interlayer dielectrics.

Measurement of the parity-violating longitudinal single-spin asymmetry for W± boson production in polarized proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 500 GeV

We report the first measurement of the parity-violating single-spin asymmetries for midrapidity decay positrons and electrons from W+ and W- boson production in longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 500 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The measured asymmetries, A(L)(W+) = -0.27 ± 0.10(stat.) ± 0.02(syst.) ± 0.03(norm.) and A(L)(W-) = 0.14 ± 0.19(stat.) ± 0.02(syst.) ± 0.01(norm.), are consistent with theory predictions, which are large and of opposite sign. These predictions are based on polarized quark and antiquark distribution functions constrained by polarized deep-inelastic scattering measurements.

Characterization of Thin Dielectric Films as Copper Diffusion Barriers Using Triangular Voltage Sweep

As technology progresses, the need for thinner Cu diffusion barrier caps is becoming more important, and it is advantageous if these barriers have low dielectric constants (κ). Towards this end, we characterized Cu penetration in several thin (35 nm to 70 nm) dielectrics, including silicon nitrides, silicon oxynitrides, an amorphous hydrogenated carbon film, and a methyl silsesquioxane layer. Metal Insulator Silicon (MIS) structures were used as the test vehicle. The barrier dielectrics were deposited on 100 nm thermal oxide which was grown on 2 Ω-cm, n-type Si wafers. After the deposition of 50 nm TEOS capping layers, both Al and Cu dots were evaporated on each wafer through a mask. Both Al and Cu dot samples were stressed at +2.7 MV/cm at 300°C for 10 minutes. For Cu dots, the applied stress pushed Cu ions into the dielectric stack. Stressing Al dots characterized the effects of the stress on the dielectric stacks and the quantity of Na ions in the films. Since C-V shifts are subject to stress-related instabilities in the interfaces as well as within the dielectrics themselves, triangular voltage sweep (TVS) was used after the applied stress to measure the concentration of Cu which reached the underlying thermal oxide film. The sensitivity of the TVS test with the structures used is about 5×109/cm2. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) analyses were performed on some of these samples to verify the electrical results.

Integration Issues for Diamond Like Carbon in a Copper Damascene Process Flow

Hydrogenated “diamondlike” carbon (DLC) is a potential candidate as a low k material for the back end interconnect (BEOL) dielectric for VLSI chips. The DLC material is an attractive dielectric due to its isotropic properties and the ability to deposit the films by CVD techniques, such as PECVD or HDP systems. Under suitable preparation conditions such materials can reach dielectric constant values below 2.8, even as low as 2.4. While the as-deposited films are not stable to exposure to subsequent processing temperatures of about 400 C, it appears that they can be stabilized, in terms of dimensional stability and material loss, by an initial anneal.

The integration of DLC films in the BEOL structure further requires good adhesion with the materials in contact with the DLC dielectric, such as silicon nitride or silicon oxide, and liner metallurgy. As the potential application of the DLC films will be in Cu based damascene structures the behavior of the films under CMP conditions is also important.

The talk will discuss the evaluation of DLC films and of integration issues such as adhesion under processing conditions, patterning, CMP behavior. Blanket and patterned structures built with DLC films will be presented.

Development of High-Efficiency Zn2SiO4:Mn Thin Films for Flat Panel Cathodoluminescent Displays

Zn2SiO4:Mn thin films were deposited and studied as thin film phosphors for flat panel cathodoluminescent displays. Crystallized films with improved electrical conductivity were obtained after conventional and rapid thermal annealings in a N2 environment at 850Xy11100 °C for 0.25 to 60 minutes. A maximum cathodoluminescent efficiency of 1.3 Lm/W was achieved under dc excitation at 1500 volts. The luminescent emission from these thin films was peaked around 525 nm. The decay time of these films was controlled in the range of 2 to 10 ms by varying the deposition and annealing parameters. The fast response time of these thin films overcomes the long decay limitation of the Zn2SiO4:Mn powder phosphor in practical display applications.

Experimental Study of Phonon-Folding in Si/Ge and Si/Sige Structures Designed for Thermoelectric Applications

We report data of Raman study of Si/Ge and Si/SiGe superlattices designed for thermoelectric applications. The obtained Raman spectra clearly indicate the presence of folded doublets from longitudinal acoustic phonons. Due to the significant difference in the sound velocities for Si and Ge the position of the doublets strongly depends on the superlattice layer thickness and ordering. Comparison of the Raman data for different samples with measured thermal and thermoelectric properties allows us to determine a correlation between the strength of the phonon confinement in these structures and their thermoelectric properties. Our experimental results are consistent with recent theoretical prediction of increased thermoelectric figure of merit in semiconductor quantum wells.

Preparation of Continuous Mesoporous Films on Porous and Dense Substrates

High quality, continuous mesoporous films are prepared on both porous and dense substrates. An interfacial reaction mechanism is used to grow mesoporous films within the pores of porous supports using a diffusion cell reactor. The porous support was placed between two compartments containing a silicate solution in one compartment and a surfactant solution in the other. The silicate and surfactant solutions diffused into the support to form a mesoporous film at the liquid-liquid interface. This method produces a transparent film free from large defects. Spincoating technique is also used to prepare mesoporous films on dense substrates. These films have uniform thickness and show well-defined interference depending on the film thickness.

Nanostructure of Electrically Conducting Polyaniline Prepared by a Novel Emulsion Polymerization Process

A soluble polyaniline (PANI) salt with moderate conductivity was synthesized by a novel emulsion polymerization process. The conductivity of the processed PANI films can be substantially increased by treating the polymer films with surfactants or with low molecular weight alcohols. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of thin polymer films revealed the existence of small islands of conducting PANI embedded in a non-conducting, dopant matrix. The conductivity of the PANI films is affected by the spatial distribution and the connectivity of these small islands. The conductivity enhancement observed upon treatment with surfactants is due to self-assembly of conducting PANI molecules into an interconnected network morphology. In the case of alcohol treatment the film conductivity is enhanced due to extraction of excess dopant phase and the subsequent densification of PANI islands to form highly conducting pathways.

An Emulsion Polymerization Process for Soluble and Electrically Conductive Polyaniline

A new emulsion process has been developed for the direct synthesis of the emeraldine salt of polyaniline (PANI) that is soluble in organic solvents. The process entails forming an emulsion composed of water, a water soluble organic solvent (e.g., 2-butoxyethanol), a water insoluble organic acid (e.g., dinonylnaphthalene sulfonic acid) and aniline. Aniline is protonated by the organic acid to form a salt which partitions into the organic phase. As oxidant (ammonium peroxydisulfate) is added, PANI salt forms in the organic phase and remains soluble. As the reaction proceeds, the reaction mixture changes from an emulsion to a two phase system, the soluble PANI remaining in the organic phase. With dinonylnaphthalene sulfonic acid (DNNSA) as the organic acid, the resulting product is truly soluble in organic solvents such as xylene and toluene(not a dispersion), of high molecular weight (Mw >22,000), film forming and miscible with many polymers such as polyurethanes, epoxies and phenoxy resins. As cast, the polyaniline film is only moderately conductive, (10−5 S/cm), however treatment of the film with surfactants such as benzyltriethylammonium chloride (BTEAC) or low molecular weight alcohols and ketones such as methanol and acetone increases the conductivity 2–3 orders of magnitude.

Causes of moderate to large pericardial effusion requiring pericardiocentesis in 140 Han Chinese patients

BACKGROUND

Causes of pericardial effusion requiring pericardiocentesis are very complex; a summary of 140 patients, especially those having iatrogenic pericardial effusion, is rare.

METHODS

We prospectively analyzed the clinical data and etiology of moderate to large pericardial effusion requiring pericardiocentesis and drainage in 140 consecutive Han Chinese patients from January 2007 to December 2009.

RESULTS

Pericardiocentesis was successfully performed and effective in all patients. There were 9 cases with transudates, while the remaining 131 cases were diagnosed with exudates (neoplastic in 54 patients, tuberculous in 40 patients, 9 cases of connective tissue diseases, 12 cases undergoing cardiac catheterization, and 8 cases of acute myocardial infarction). Among the 54 malignancies, 30 patients had lung cancer, 7 had breast cancer, and 4 had liver cancer. No differences in the clinical characteristics and the results of routine and biochemistry studies in the pericardial fluid between tuberculous and malignant groups were found. Of the 12 patients undergoing cardiac catheterization, 6 cases had undergone catheter ablation for tachycardia and 4 cases had undergone percutaneous coronary intervention. The 6 patients undergoing catheter ablation were women and the ratio of pericardial effusion was higher in women (6/436) than in men (0/462; p<0.05). Pericardiocentesis and drainage was effective in the 6 patients who underwent catheter ablation, and the remaining 6 patients underwent surgical intervention after pericardiocentesis and drainage. All 8 patients with acute myocardial infarction died during hospitalization.

CONCLUSION

In China, most moderate to large pericardial effusions requiring pericardiocentesis and drainage were exudates and bloody, which were mainly caused by malignancy and tuberculosis. However, the incidence of iatrogenic pericardial effusion has been increasing and should not be ignored. Pericardiocentesis and drainage were effective.

Ultrafast Carrier Thermalization in Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon

We present detailed studies of the initial relaxation processes of photoexcited carriers in hydrogenated amorphous silicon. We have carried out time-resolved measurements of the photoexcited carrier response in HWCVD a-Si:H thin films using a wavelength-resolved femtosecond pump-probe technique, in which an intense 35-fs pump pulse excites carriers in the sample and a time-delayed probe pulse measures the resulting change in optical properties as a function of time delay following the pump pulse. Measurements of the transient optical absorbance were carried out as a function of the density of excited carriers, sample temperature, and probe wavelength. These studies indicate fast carrier thermalization via phonon emission on a ∼ 150 fs time scale and rapid phonon equilibration on a ∼ 230 fs time scale.

Transformation of wheat with the HMW-GS 1Bx14 gene without markers

High molecular weight (HMW) glutenin polypeptides are critical contributors to the visco/elastic properties responsible for the processing characteristics and utilizations of wheat flour. In order to improve bread making quality of flour and produce transgenic plants free of selectable markers, a linear DNA construct consisting of a minimal expression cassette with the HMW-GS 1Bx14 gene was transformed into wheat cultivar Mianyang 19 by microprojectile bombardment. The transformants were selected by PCR instead of herbicidal markers. Seven transgenic plants were identified from a total of 1219 transformants, yielding a transformation frequency of 0.28%. An SDS-PAGE analysis confirmed that the 1Bx14 gene was expressed in three T1 seeds of the transgenic plants. Our results demonstrated that it is feasible to obtain marker-free transformants using the linear-expression-cassette-transformation approach coupled with PCR selection.
