Abstract
A search for quark compositeness in the form of quark contact interactions, based on hadronic jet pairs (dijets) produced in proton-proton collisions at √s=7 TeV, is described. The data sample of the study corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 pb(-1) collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The dijet centrality ratio, which quantifies the angular distribution of the dijets, is measured as a function of the invariant mass of the dijet system and is found to agree with the predictions of the standard model. A statistical analysis of the data provides a lower limit on the energy scale of quark contact interactions. The sensitivity of the analysis is such that the expected limit is 2.9 TeV; because the observed value of the centrality ratio at high invariant mass is below the expectation, the observed limit is 4.0 TeV at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract
Abstract
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Visceral obesity and body weight gain are associated with the increased risk of postmenopausal breast cancer. Adiponectin is an adipokine possessing anti-tumor activities against various types of obesity-related cancers. The present study has established a MMTV-polyomavirus middle T antigen (PyVT) transgenic mouse deficient with adiponectin (ADN) expression. Compared to the control mice [PyVT(+/−)ADN(+/+)], the development of mammary tumors in mice lacking this adipokine [PyVT(+/−)ADN(-/-)] was significantly accelerated. While the serum total cholesterol was progressively decreased from week 11 onwards, the cholesterol content in tumor tissues was elevated in both types of mice. The ratio between serum LDL-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol was significantly higher in PyVT(+/−)ADN(-/-) mice than that in PyVT(+/−)ADN(+/+) mice. Adiponectin was able to inhibit cholesterol uptake in both MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells and the primary tumor cells isolated from PyVT transgenic mice. These data demonstrated that the anti-breast cancer activity of adiponectin was at least in part attributed to its suppressive effects on cholesterol accumulation in mammary tumors.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
FDG positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) may accurately detect distant metastases during staging of primary breast cancer. However, the evidence is very limited. We retrospectively compared the sensitivity and specificity of PET/CT and conventional imaging (CT, ultrasonography, radiography, and skeletal scintigraphy) for the detection of distant metastases in patients with primary breast cancer. We also retrospectively tested the hypothesis that stage III disease detected by conventional imaging + PET/CT has a better prognosis than that detected by conventional imaging only.
Methods
To determine sensitivity and specificity, we used a database of 225 patients with primary breast cancer (2000-2009) for which PET/CT data existed. The presence or absence of distant metastases was determined based on histopathologic findings, subsequent imaging findings, or clinical follow-up. To determine prognosis, we studied 935 patients newly diagnosed with stage III breast cancer (2000-2009). In 82 of these patients, stage III disease was detected by conventional imaging + PET/CT. We studied 171 IBC patients newly diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. In 51 of these patients, stage III disease was detected by conventional imaging + PET/CT; we compared their relapse-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) rates with those for 853 patients diagnosed using conventional imaging only. Univariate and multivariate Cox Proportional Hazard regression models were used to assess PEC/CT.
Results
Among 225 pts with primary breast cancer, the sensitivity and specificity for PET/CT in the detection of distant metastases were 97.4% and 91.2%, respectively; This was significantly higher (p=0.009 and P<0.001) than the sensitivity and specificity rates for conventional imaging only (85.9% and 67.3%, respectively). Eleven patients of distant metastases detected by PET/CT were clinically occult and not evident on conventional imaging. Among patients with stage III disease, RFS (hazard ratio [HR]=1.10, p=0.7) and OS (HR=1.14, p=0.673) did not significantly differ based on whether PET/CT was used. RFS also did not show significant difference in multivariate analysis (HR=0.70, p=0.213). However, in inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), patients diagnosed with conventional imaging + PET/CT had longer RFS than patients diagnosed with conventional imaging only in both univariate (HR=0.43, p=0.014) and multivariate analysis (HR=0.33, p=0.004). There was a trend for OS improvement among patients who had PET/CT (HR=0.55, p=0.122). Conclusion
PET/CT had higher sensitivity and specificity than conventional imaging in the detection of distant metastases of breast cancer. Among patients with stage III disease, there was no difference in OS or RFS between patients diagnosed with conventional imaging + PET/CT and patients diagnosed with conventional imaging only. IBC patients staged with conventional imaging + PET/CT had better prognosis than those staged with conventional imaging only. Based on our results, the use of PET/CT as a staging tool to detect metastasis is not justified in stage III non-IBC. Conversely, the use of conventional imaging + PET/CT in patients with IBC appears promising, but needs prospective confirmation.

Abstract
Deregulated expression of Notch molecules is observed in many malignant tumors, however, the expression of Notch1 and Jagged1 in colon adenocarcinoma is still unknown. This study is to investigate the expression of Notch1 and Jagged1 in human colon adenocarcinoma. Sixty-five human colon adenocarcinoma and 60 adjacent nontumor colon tissue sections were detected by immunohistochemistry. Ten paired fresh surgical human colon adenocarcinoma and adjacent nontumor colon samples were analyzed by Western blot and RT-PCR. Both Notch1 and Jagged1 were expressed in the cytoplasm of neoplastic cells of colon adenocarcinoma tissue. The protein and mRNA levels of both molecules were higher in colon adenocarcinoma than in adjacent nontumor tissue. Moreover, Notch1 was positively correlated with tumor stage. This investigation demonstrates that Notch1 and Jagged1 are up-regulated in human colon adenocarcinoma and suggests that Notch1/Jagged1 signaling might play a role in the development of colon adenocarcinoma.

Abstract
We previously reported that treatment of both donor cells and early cloned embryos with a combination of 0.01 μM 5-aza-2(/)-Deoxycytidine (5-aza-dC) and 0.05 μM trichostatin A (TSA) significantly improved development of cloned bovine embryos in vitro. In the present study, we investigated the effect of this combination treatment on the in vivo development potency and postnatal survivability of cloned calves. Blastocysts (77 and 82 blastocysts derived from untreated (control) and treated groups, respectively) were individually transferred to recipient cows. Relative to the control group, the combination treatment of both donor cells and early embryos with 5-aza-dC and TSA dramatically increased the cleavage rate (49.2 vs 63.6%, P < 0.05) at 24 h of culture, and blastocyst development rate on Days 6 and 7 of culture (18.8 vs 33.9% and 27.1 vs 38.5% respectively, P < 0.05). Although pregnancy rate did not differ 40 d after transfer, it was lower in the treated than control group 90 d after transfer (7.8 vs 29.3%, P < 0.05). In the control group, there were three calves born to 77 recipients (only two survived beyond 60 d), whereas in the treated group, 17 calves were born to 82 recipients, and 11 survived beyond 60 d. In conclusion, a combination treatment of donor cells and early cloned embryos with 5-aza-dC and TSA significantly enhanced development of somatic cell cloned bovine embryos in vivo; cloning efficiency (number of surviving calves at 60 d of birth/number of recipient cows) was increased from 2.6 to 13.4%.

Abstract
The optic disc is an important feature in the retina. We propose a method for the detection of the optic disc based on a supervised learning scheme. The method employs pixel and local neighbourhood features extracted from the ROI of a digital retinal fundus photograph. A support vector machine based classification mechanism is used to classify each image point as belonging to the cup and retina. The proposed method is evaluated on a sample image set of 68 retinal fundus images. The results show a high correlation (r>0.9) with the ground truth segmentation, with an overlap error of 6.02%, and found to be comparable to the inter-observer variability based on an independent second observer segmentation of the same data set.

Abstract
A search for narrow resonances in the dijet mass spectrum is performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 pb⁻¹ collected by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are presented on the product of the resonance cross section, branching fraction into dijets, and acceptance, separately for decays into quark-quark, quark-gluon, or gluon-gluon pairs. The data exclude new particles predicted in the following models at the 95% confidence level: string resonances, with mass less than 2.50 TeV, excited quarks, with mass less than 1.58 TeV, and axigluons, colorons, and E6 diquarks, in specific mass intervals. This extends previously published limits on these models.

Abstract
A time-resolved SAXS study has been carried out on the formation of amorphous calcium carbonate from supersaturated aqueous solutions at an initial concentration of 5 mmol/L CaCO(3). Particle formation was induced by mixing equal volumes of equinormal CaCl(2) and Na(2)CO(3) solutions with a stopped-flow device installed at the SAXS beamline. The resulting scattering curves were analyzed without any model assumption with respect to the particle shape. The analysis is based on the intercept of the scattering curve, its initial slope, and the Porod invariant. These parameters give access to the average particle mass, the average particle size, and the mass concentration of the particles, respectively. The evolution of particle mass and concentration with time gives access to the trend in the particle number density. The size and mass values were found to be correlated by characteristic exponents. Two different mass values can be used for this correlation: direct use of the intercept of the scattering curve or alternatively a ratio of this intercept with the corresponding Porod invariant. The resulting exponents depend on the particle growth mechanism. These exponents, together with the evolution of the number density, are capable of discriminating between a monomer-addition mechanism and a particle-particle coagulation mechanism as two alternative building mechanisms for the resulting amorphous CaCO(3) nanoparticles. A detailed description of the data analysis and its merit in establishing a particle growth mechanism is presented.

Abstract
The contribution of B meson decays to nonphotonic electrons, which are mainly produced by the semileptonic decays of heavy-flavor mesons, in p + p collisions at √s=200 GeV has been measured using azimuthal correlations between nonphotonic electrons and hadrons. The extracted B decay contribution is approximately 50% at a transverse momentum of pT≥5 GeV/c. These measurements constrain the nuclear modification factor for electrons from B and D meson decays. The result indicates that B meson production in heavy ion collisions is also suppressed at high pT.

Abstract
Tumor-associated dendritic cells (DCs) often induce T cell anergy or deletion and regulatory T cells instead of antitumor immunity. Although many tumor-associated Ags have been found, there is still no effective vaccine for cancer. Thus, novel rational strategies to enhance the immunogenicity of cancer-specific Ags are needed. Chromosome 1 open reading frame 190 (c1orf190), a gene that encodes a 239-aa hypothetical protein and contains multiple kinase phosphorylation sites, has a wide relationship with multiple signaling pathway molecules and can be regulated by multiple factors, such as TLR ligands. In this study, we demonstrate that c1orf190 can activate NF-κB, drive the production of cytokines, and promote the Ag-presenting function and the priming ability of DCs. Furthermore, c1orf190 can promote resistance of DCs to tumor-associated inhibition not only in the Ag-presenting function but also in the priming ability to induce Ag-specific T lymphocytes. Thus, c1orf190, an NF-κB activator, may be a candidate gene for regulating the function of DCs to resist tumor-associated factor-mediated dysfunction. We also found that c1orf190-mediated cytokine release is achieved by activating the canonical but not the noncanonical NF-κB pathway.

Abstract
Dielectric films with embedded silicon Si nanocrystallites (Si-Nc) have been recognized as promising light-emitting materials for future integrated photonics based on silicon technology. This work reports a novel method of making this kind of material by high-temperature annealing of Si-rich oxide or nitride films which gives rise to the phase separation reaction and the formation of crystalline silicon nanoclusters in the films. Various characteristics of these materials were studied in detail by using transmission electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman, and photoluminescence (PL). Strong transverse optical (TO) mode of Si-Nc at around 516 cm(-1) was found in the Raman spectra of the annealed dielectric films. XPS studies indicate that the Si 2p spectra could be transformed from a random bonding structure (as-deposited) to a random mixing of Si-Nc with stoichiometric oxide or nitride phase after the high-temperature annealing. The energy locations of PL were found to depend on the amount of rich Si and the annealing conditions. Longer and higher temperature annealing can result in the growth of the Si-Nc size and leads to a red-shift of PL. Direct correlation among the crystallite sizes with the PL peaks was found.

Abstract
A precise measurement of the neutron decay β asymmetry A₀ has been carried out using polarized ultracold neutrons from the pulsed spallation ultracold neutron source at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Combining data obtained in 2008 and 2009, we report A₀ = -0.119 66±0.000 89{-0.001 40}{+0.001 23}, from which we determine the ratio of the axial-vector to vector weak coupling of the nucleon g{A}/g{V}=-1.275 90{-0.004 45}{+0.004 09}.

Abstract
K-ras mutations occur in as high as 95% of patients with pancreatic cancer. K-ras activates Rac1-dependent NADPH oxidase, a key source of superoxide. Superoxide plays an important role in pancreatic cancer cell proliferation and scavenging or decreasing the levels of superoxide inhibits pancreatic cancer cell growth both in vitro and in vivo. DNA microarray analysis and RT-PCR has demonstrated that Rac1 is also upregulated in pancreatic cancer. The aim of this study was to determine if inhibiting Rac1 would alter pancreatic tumor cell behavior. Human pancreatic cancer cells with mutant K-ras (MIA PaCa-2), wild-type K-ras (BxPC-3), and the immortal H6c7 cell line (pancreatic ductal epithelium) expressing K-ras oncogene (H6c7eR-KrasT) that is tumorigenic, were infected with a dominant/negative Rac1 construct (AdN17Rac1). In cells with mutant K-ras, AdN17Rac1 decreased rac activity, decreased superoxide levels, and inhibited in vitro growth. However in the BxPC-3 cell line, AdN17Rac1 did not change rac activity, superoxide levels, or in vitro cell growth. Additionally, AdN17Rac1 decreased superoxide levels and inhibited in vitro growth in the KrasT tumorigenic cell line, but had no effect in the immortalized H6c7 cell line. In human pancreatic tumor xenografts, intratumoral injections of AdN17Rac1 inhibited tumor growth. These results suggest that activation of Rac1-dependent superoxide generation leads to pancreatic cancer cell proliferation. In pancreatic cancer inhibition of Rac1 may be a potential therapeutic target.

Abstract
We report that Bi₂Se₃ thin films can be epitaxially grown on SrTiO₃ substrates, which allow for very large tunablity in carrier density with a back gate. The observed low field magnetoconductivity due to weak antilocalization (WAL) has a very weak gate-voltage dependence unless the electron density is reduced to very low values. Such a transition in WAL is correlated with unusual changes in longitudinal and Hall resistivities. Our results suggest a much suppressed bulk conductivity at large negative gate voltages and a possible role of surface states in the WAL phenomena.

Molecular characterization of erm(B)- and mef(E)-mediated erythromycin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae in China and complete DNA sequence of Tn2010. J Appl Microbiol 2010; 110:254-65. Abstract
AIMS To characterize the erm(B)- and mef(E)-mediated erythromycin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae clinical isolates obtained from ten hospitals located different cities in China. METHODS AND RESULTS Totally 83 S. pneumoniae were collected, and eighteen representative strains of 66 strains that exhibited erythromycin resistance were used for further characterization by antibiograms, serotyping, PFGE, MLST, DNA sequencing of the macrolide-resistance elements and mapping of the elements on the chromosome. Twelve isolates showed a high-level resistance to erythromycin, and six other isolates showed a low-level resistance to erythromycin. Thirteen isolates harboured a Tn2010 transposon (26·4 kbp) encoding the erm(B), tet(M) and mef(E) genes and were classified into three types by Tn2010 structures. The remaining five isolates harboured a Tn6002 transposon (20·9 kbp) encoding the erm(B) and tet(M) genes and were classified into three types by Tn6002 locations on the chromosome. Three of the Tn6002 elements were located within the Tn5252-like element, implying that these composed a large mobile element. The MLST analyses showed that several clones had been disseminated and that the CC271 strains carrying the Tn2010 element expressing the high-level resistance to erythromycin were predominant in China. Four new MLST strains, which were designated as ST3262, ST3263, ST3397 and ST3398 were also identified. CONCLUSIONS The erythromycin resistance determinant of S.pneumoniae that had been isolated in China was located in Tn2010 or the Tn6002 element and several clones had been disseminated, and the CC271 strains carrying the Tn2010 element expressing the high-level resistance to erythromycin were predominant in China. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This is the first molecular analysis of erythromycin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae clinical isolates in China, and the first report of the complete nucleotide sequence of Tn2010 (26,390 bp).
