Multiple self-healing squamous epithelioma

Multiple self-healing squamous epithelioma is determined by a rare autosomal allele in heterozygous state and affects both sexes with approximately equal severity. The lesions are found more frequently on exposed areas of skin and their distribution correspondingly differs between the sexes. Reliable information on 62 cases has been obtained in the west of Scotland. This number of patients is more than twice that recorded in the world literature. It seems possible that the Scottish cases have arisen from a single mutation occurring before 1790.

Chromosome breakage and ultrasound

Human lymphocyte cultures were examined for chromosome damage after exposure to ultrasound. Control and treated slides were scored "blind" and showed no evidence of damage due to ultrasound. Neither was there evidence of chromosome damage in blood cultures from six infants whose mothers had ultrasound during pregnancy when compared with that from six infants whose mothers had not. Our results suggest that if diagnostic ultrasound causes chromosome damage it does so with less frequency than acceptable levels of diagnostic x-irradiation.

Abnormal gonadal differentiation in XY females and XX males

It now seems probable that most cases of pure gonadal dysgenesis in XY women are genetically determined rather than induced by environmental agents. Some sporadic cases may conceivably be the result of X-Y interchange and it is suggested that more strenuous efforts be made to study the inheritance of X-linked markers in these cases and in XX true hermaphrodites. Such studies have already been most informative in XX males.
