A study of the bladder blood flow during distension in rabbits

This study has shown that there is a linear relationship between bladder blood flow and bladder pressure. At a bladder pressure of 80 mm Hg (blood pressure in rabbits varying from 90/60-100/70 mm Hg) the blood flow in the bladder is minimal. It is suggested that bladder distension at 80 mm Hg in rabbits leads to hypoxia in the bladder wall as a result of the reduced blood flow. Prolonged bladder wall hypoxia occurring as a result of prolonged bladder distension may be responsible for selective necrosis of bladder tumours.

Idioventricular tachycardia with angina pectoris

Idioventricular tachycardia (IVT) occurred in a patient with angina pectoris on three separate occasions associated with stress induced angina. It occurred immediately after a Master's test, a treadmill exercise test, and following an episode of paroxysmal atrial tachycardia which was precipitated by endocardial pacing. His bundle electrograms demonstrated that the rhythm was ventricular in origin. Cardiac catheterization documented the presence of severe coronary artery disease. Idioventricular tachycardia is often seen with acute myocardial infarction. It is rarely seen with angina or with exercise testing. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of IVT which could be repeatedly produced by stress induced angina.

Changing the actions of neuroactive drugs by changing brain protein synthesis

Diminution of cerebral protein synthesis diminished the cerebral responses of mice to some neuroactive drugs, while an increase in synthesis increased the responses. Protein synthesis in whole brains (tested in vitro) was diminished by giving living mice different inhibitors by different routes. The inhibitors tested (chloramphenicol, cycloheximide, and puromycin) diminished the behavioral responses of the mice to levodopa without affecting either its cerebral uptake or its conversion to dopamine. A diminution of the reactions of dopaminergic receptors was suggested by the diminished responses to the dopaminergic drug, apomorphine, while participation of cholinergic ones was suggested by experiments with oxotremorine. Proof that receptors had been specifically involved was secured on homogenized caudate nuclei from chloramphenicol-treated mice, in which the dopamine-activated production of cyclic AMP was markedly diminished. A stimulator of cerebral protein synthesis, the artificial double-stranded RNA, poly(I).poly(C), increased the behavioral responses to these three drugs while it increased the dopamine-activated production of cyclic AMP. Since all these experimental increases or decreases in the responses to drugs required the lapse of only a few hours, proteins with rapid turnover rates must be critical in the activation of several kinds of cerebral receptors.

Do sensitivity drifts occur for stimuli other than sodium chloride? A premliminary investigation

Solutions of sodium chloride, sucrose, tartaric acid, and quinine sulphate were each presented in successive ascending series, both with and without interstimulus tapwater rinses, to six subjects. A tendency for detection and recognition thresholds to be raised on successive ascending series was noted for all stimuli. The effects were explained in terms of adaptation to stimulus residuals. When water rinses were taken between tastings, significantly lower thresholds were noted for sodium chloride and glucose. Although this trend did occur for tartaric acid and quinine sulphate, it was not significant. The literature was examined and seen to show similar trends.

Meningitis and encephalitis associated with mumps infection. A 10-year survey

During the 10-year period 1960-69, 137 patients in Ruchill Hospital were diagnosed by clinical and laboratory findings as mumps meningitis. Parotitis was detected in only 51 (37%). There was a male preponderance, 97: 40. 96% of the males were under 10 years old compared with 78% of the females. The peak incidence of patients with meningitis alone was in June-July, parotitis with meningitis was from November to January. All 137 meningitis patients made a good recovery. Of the 2 definite cases of mumps encephalitis 1 showed severe psychomotor sequelae. More of the total 139 patients showed rising titres to mumps `V' envelope antigen than to mumps `S' nucleoprotein antigen.
