Abstract
The sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicus) is an important item in Asian cuisine. It is currently produced through aquaculture, especially in China, after being overexploited in the wild in the 1990s. We isolated 70 novel polymorphic microsatellite loci using an enrichment-colony hybridization protocol. All loci were characterized in 48 individuals from a natural population in Rongcheng (Shandong, China) using genomic DNA isolated from muscle tissue. The number of alleles ranged from 2 to 17 (mean 7.0), and the observed and expected heterozygosities varied from 0.0010 to 1.0000 and from 0.2125 to 0.9477, respectively. Thirty-one of the 70 loci exhibited departure from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. These microsatellite markers should be useful resources for population genetic studies and for molecular marker-assisted breeding of A. japonicus.

Abstract
Here we report the design and controlled synthesis of monodisperse and precisely size-controllable UCNP@mSiO(2) nanocomposites smaller than 50 nm by directly coating a mesoporous silica shell (mSiO(2)) on upconversion nanocrystals NaYF(4):Tm/Yb/Gd (UCNPs), which can be used as near-infrared fluorescence and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agents and a platform for drug delivery as well. Some key steps such as transferring hydrophobic UCNPs to the water phase by using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), removal of the excess amount of CTAB, and temperature-controlled ultrasonication treatment should be adopted and carefully monitored to obtain uniform upconversion core/mesoporous silica shell nanocomposites. The excellent performance of the core-shell-structured nanocomposite in near-infrared fluorescence and magnetic resonance imaging was also demonstrated.

Abstract
Nocardiosis is a rare but life-threatening opportunistic infection, especially in immune compromised patients, including kidney transplant recipients. Primary pulmonary infection is the most common clinical pattern, and can easily result in disseminated Nocardia infection if treatment therapy is not adequate at the beginning. In this article, we report a new case of disseminated nocardiosis (lungs, skin, and pericardium) after renal allograft transplantation. We also review the English literature published from 1980 to 2010 and analyze the clinical characteristics of nocardiosis in kidney transplant recipients.

Abstract
Dan-Shen-Yin (DSY) is a well-known traditional Chinese formula which is widely used in clinical practice for the treatment of coronary heart disease (CHD) and has produced a favorable effect in China. The present study was designed to examine whether or not acute oral DSY can protect the heart against myocardial infarction in acute myocardial ischemic rats. If so, we would then investigate the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant mechanisms involved. The left anterior descending coronary artery was occluded to induce myocardial ischemia in the hearts of Sprague-Dawley rats. At the end of the 3-h ischemic period (or 24 h for infarction size), we measured the myocardial infarction size, inflammatory factors and the activities of anti-oxidative enzymes. DSY reduced the infarction size and the serum levels of C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, tumour necrosis factor-α and malondialdehyde and increased the activities of superoxide dismutase and the serum levels of glutathione. The results show that DSY exerts significant cardioprotective effects against acute ischemic myocardial injury in rats, possibly through its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, and may thus be used as a potential therapeutic reagent for the treatment of CHD.

Abstract
Aristolochic acids (AAs) are a family of structurally related nitrophenanthrene carboxylic acids that are present in medicinal herbs such as Aristolochia species. The organic anion transporters (OATs) of the solute carrier ( SLC22) gene family located in the renal proximal tubules play a key role in the excretion of a variety of exogenous and endogenous compounds. However, it is unclear how AAs permeate into renal epithelial cells. In this regard, we investigated the role of rat OAT1 ([rOAT1] SLC22A6) in the cellular uptake of AAI in vitro and in vivo. A concentration- and time-dependent intracellular accumulation of AAI was observed in rOAT1-transfected human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293) cells, which was 2- to 6-fold higher than the control cells. There was a significantly increased rate of cellular apoptosis in rOAT1-transfected HEK293 cells than control cells after AAI treatment. Para-aminohippuric acid (PAH) significantly reduced the intracellular accumulation of AAI in rOAT1-transfected HEK293 cells. Administration of AAI for 35 days in rats caused significantly reduced expression of OAT1 in basolateral membrane and declined renal clearance of PAH as well as renal proximal tubule injuries. These findings indicate that AAI is taken up by OAT1, which then exert its intracellular toxic effects on renal proximal tubule cells, which in turn damage functional OAT1 and may further disturb the transport of its substrates.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the morphological features of nonpuerperal mastitis on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS MRI results of 27 patients diagnosed with nonpuerperal mastitis were retrospectively analyzed according to the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS). RESULTS According to the enhanced MRI results, 22 cases presented as nonmass-like enhancements and five cases presented as masses. For the 22 nonmass-like enhancement lesions, one case showed as a homogeneous enhancement and 21 cases showed as heterogeneous enhancements. In the 21 heterogeneous enhancement cases, 13 contained lesions of rim-like enhancement. With regard to the number of lesions with rim-like enhancement, 11 presented as multiple and two as single. In the five mass lesions, three presented as rim enhancements. Indications of rim or rim-like enhancement accounted for 59% (16/27) of all cases. For the 16 cases that presented with signs of rim or rim-like enhancement, the central hypointensity area surrounded by enhanced rim or rim-like entity showed as hyperintensity in 14 cases and hypointensity or heterointensity in two cases on T2-weighted imaging. CONCLUSION On contrast-enhanced MRI, most nonpuerperal mastitis presented as nonmass-like lesion with heterogeneous signal intensity. The observation of signs of rim or rim-like enhancement on contrast-enhanced MRI with central hypointensity areas showing as hyperintensity on T2-weighted imaging is suggestive of the possibility of nonpuerperal mastitis.

Abstract
A photonic approach to generate triangular waveform signals is proposed and analyzed. With active bias control, two sub-MZMs (MZ-a and MZ-b) of a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-MZM) operate at minimum transmission point, leaving the main MZM (MZ-c) at quadrature transmission point. Triangular waveform can be observed by a parameter setting of modulation index. The proposal is first analyzed and then validated by simulation. The key significance of the scheme is that it is capable of generating triangular waveform signals via a sinusoid local oscillator.

Abstract
Ginsenosides are the main active ingredients in ginseng and have recently been reported to have beneficial effects on the CNS. Ocotillol is a derivate of pseudoginsenoside-F11, which is an ocotillol-type ginsenoside found in American ginseng. We examined the effects of ocotillol (a) on neuronal activity of projection neurons, mitral cells (MC), in a mouse olfactory bulb brain slice preparation using whole-cell patch-clamp recording, and (b) on animal behavior by measuring locomotor activity of mice in vivo. Ocotillol displayed an excitatory effect on spontaneous action potential firing and depolarized the membrane potential of MCs. The effect was concentration-dependent, with an EC(50) of 4 μM. In the presence of blockers of ionotropic glutamatergic and GABAergic synaptic transmission (6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione [CNQX], 10 μM; D-AP5, 50 μM; gabazine, 5 μM), the excitatory effect of ocotillol on firing was abolished. Further experiments showed that the ocotillol-induced neuronal excitation persisted in the presence of GABA(A) receptor antagonist gabazine but was eliminated by applying AMPA/kainate receptor antagonist CNQX and N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist D-AP5, suggesting that ionotropic glutamate transmission was involved in mediating the effects of ocotillol. Bath application of ocotillol evoked an inward current as well as an increased frequency of spontaneous glutamatergic excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs). Both the inward current and sEPSCs could be blocked by ionotropic glutamate receptor antagonists CNQX and D-AP5. These results indicate that the excitatory action of ocotillol on MCs was mediated by enhanced glutamate release. Behavioral experiments demonstrated that ocotillol increased locomotor activities of mice. Our results suggest that ocotillol-evoked neuronal excitability was mediated by increased release of glutamate, which may be responsible for the increased spontaneous locomotor activities in vivo.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Post-contrast diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is occasionally necessary when the results of the pre-contrast DWI differ from that of the dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI), however, the effects of contrast material on DWI image and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values have not been fully examined. PURPOSE To assess whether the administration of gadolinium-DTPA (Gd-DTPA) significantly affects the DWI of prostate lesions or normal tissue at the 3.0 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (3.0 T MRI). MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifty-one patients with 52 prostate lesions, including 32 prostate cancer (25 in the peripheral zone [PZ] and seven that could not be confidently located) and 20 benign lesions (11 in PZ and nine in central grand [CG]), underwent echo-planar imaging (EPI)-DWI with b values of 0, 1000 s/mm(2) before and after administration of Gd-DTPA at 3.0 T MRI. Regions of interest (ROI) were drawn in all lesions, 42 normal PZ, 44 CG tissue and air to calculate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and ADC values of lesions and normal tissue, and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of lesions for pre- and post-contrast images. Statistical differences between pre- and post-contrast data were assessed by use of a paired t test. RESULTS No significant differences between pre- and post-contrast images were found in the CNR of lesions and SNR of all the tissue except CG, which showed a statistically significant decline (9.6%, p < 0.0001) in SNR after contrast relative to the pre-contrast images. The post-contrast ADC values were statistically significantly lower than pre-contrast for prostate cancer (0.80 ± 0.11 mm(2)/s Vs 0.89 ± 0.12 mm(2)/s, p < 0.0001) and benign lesions (1.14 ± 0.30 mm(2)/s vs. 1.2 ± 0.29 mm(2)/s, p < 0.0001). No significant differences were detected for normal tissue. CONCLUSION The administration of Gd-DTPA can slightly affect the DWI image quality of the prostate and reduce the ADC value of lesions at 3.0T MRI. Applications of post-contrast DWI require caution in interpretation.

Abstract
The serine-threonine kinase receptor-associated protein (STRAP), a 39 kDa protein localized predominantly in cytoplasm, is an important inhibitor of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-ß) signaling and a regulator of cell proliferation. To investigate the application of STRAP as a novel biomarker in evaluating the pathological condition of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and to determine the possible involvement of STRAP in SLE pathogenesis, the expression levels of STRAP in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of SLE patients were analyzed. PBMC were collected from six patients with active SLE, six with stable SLE and six healthy controls; after protein extraction and concentration determination, the samples were labeled with reagents for isobaric tagging for relative and absolute protein quantification (iTRAQ) and detected by tandem mass spectrometry. The initial proteomic analysis identified and quantified hundreds of proteins. Of these, STRAP was found to decrease more than three-fold in active SLE patients compared with healthy controls (the relative ratio was 0.291). The under-expression of STRAP in active SLE was further verified by western blot in larger independent sample sets. Clinical data analyses revealed that the levels of STRAP in SLE inversely correlated to the SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI) (r = -0.607, p < 0.05). These results indicate that the under-expression of STRAP may be a negative factor in the pathogenic process of SLE; as a result, this may also be of clinical significance as a potential condition-specific indicator of active SLE.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study the radiological appearance and pathological features of breast phyllodes tumors (PTs), and to enhance the recognition of the tumor. MATERIALS AND METHODS Clinical and imaging findings were retrospectively reviewed in 24 women with PTs confirmed by surgical pathology. All of the 24 patients had preoperative MRI and sonography, and 10 had preoperative mammography. RESULTS The histologic findings were benign, borderline and malignant PTs in 16.7% (4/24), 45.8% (11/24) and 37.5% (9/24) of cases, respectively. The tumor size (p=0.001), irregular shape on sonographic imaging (p=0.039), internal non-enhanced septations (p=0.009), silt-like changes in enhanced images (p=0.006) and signal changes from T2-weighted to enhanced images on MRI (p=0.001) correlated significantly with the histologic grade; the BI-RADS category of the MRI could reflect the PT's histologic grade with a correlation coefficient of 0.440 (p=0.031). If the category BI-RADS ≥4a was considered to be a suspicious malignant lesion, the diagnostic accuracy of mammography, US and MRI would be 70% (7/10), 62.5% (15/24) and 95.8% (23/24), respectively. CONCLUSION The tumor size and several US and MRI findings can be used to help preoperatively determine the histologic grade of breast PTs. When a patient presents with a progressively enlarging, painless breast mass, MRI should be recommended first.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the factors influencing mammographic and sonographic features of mucinous breast carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-six patients diagnosed as mucinous breast carcinoma between March 2005 and April 2009 were studied. Mammographies of all patients and sonographies of 41 patients were analyzed retrospectively. Microscopic slides were re-evaluated by a pathologist in order to estimate the volume of extracellular mucus which was classified as: (+), less than 50% of mucus; (++), 50-80% of mucus; and (+++), more than 80% of mucus. RESULTS Thirty-one (61.3%) cases of pure mucinous type and 2 (33.3%) of mixed mucinous carcinoma presented as masses had well-defined margins on mammography. No correlation was found between margin characteristics and histological type as well as extracellular mucus rates. Denser breasts and young age group had significantly higher ratios of tumors presented with ill-defined masses than its counterpart. Sonographically, 100% lesions showed a hypoechoic lesion, 76.5% lesions in pure type and 71.4% lesions in mixed type showed a heterogeneous internal echo. No correlation was found between sonographic findings and histological type as well as extracellular mucus rates. Lesions with >40 positivity PCNA had higher ratio presented as ill-defined margins than those of ≤40% positivity PCNA. CONCLUSIONS The most common appearance of mucinous breast carcinoma is a mass on mammography and a hypoechoic lesion with heterogeneous internal echo on sonography. Mammographic margins and sonographic findings have no relation with histological type and extracellular mucus rate. Mammographic margin features are correlated with breast density and age and PCNA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Klotho gene, a new anti-aging gene, is mainly expressed in the kidney tubules. Several studies have found the relationship between klotho and emergence and development of renal diseases. This study set out to explore the role of fosinopril (Fos) and valsartan (Val) on klotho expression induced by angiotensin II (Ang II) in rat renal tubular epithelial cells (NRK-52E). METHODS NRK-52E cells were divided into five groups according to the treatment of Ang II, Fos and Val. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), p38, phospho-p38 (p-p38), p53, and Sp1 protein expression were determined by immunohistochemical and Western blotting analysis. Klotho expression was detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting analysis. RESULTS Ang II upregulated TGF-β1, p-p38 and p53 expression, and inhibited Sp1 and klotho expression in NRK-52E cells. After the intervention of Fos and/or Val, TGF-β1, p-p38 and p53 expression were downregulated, Sp1 and klotho expression were upregulated. TGF-β1 and p53, Sp1 and klotho expression exhibited a positive linear correlation, respectively. CONCLUSION We conclude that Fos and Val have a protective role in Ang II-induced renal damage, and it may be through mechanism of inhibiting TGF-β1, p-p38 and p53 expression, thus upregulating Sp1 and klotho expression.

Abstract
Oleic acid stabilized superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) were selected as the cores for fabrication of sub-50-nm monodisperse single-loaded SPION@SiO2 core-shell nanostructures. Parameters that influence the formation of SPION@SiO2 in the water-in-oil reverse microemulsion system have been systematically investigated. The sufficiently high concentration of well-dispersed SPION, together with an appropriately low injection rate of tetraethoxysilane, were found to be the keys to efficiently prevent the homogeneous nucleation of silica and obtain a high-quality single-loaded core-shell nanocomposite. A more detailed mechanism for incorporating oleic acid capped inorganic functional nanoparticles into silica is proposed on the basis of previous reports and our new experimental results. Finally, the as-synthesized SPION@SiO2 nanospheres are exploited as an MRI-enhanced contrast agent, and their contrast effect in solution is tested by using a clinical MRI instrument.
