Persistent Truncus Arteriosus in a Dog

A 5-week-old male mixed terrier with persistent truncus arteriosus had a grade IV cardiac murmur. Cardiovascular anomalies noted at necropsy included ventricular septal defect in addition to complete persistent truncus arteriosus. The latter originated from the right ventricle and served as an aorta, also providing aortic branches that included a modified bronchial artery. This malformation closely resembled type IV persistent truncus arteriosus in humans, however, anatomically it should be classified as type I because of a patent small hypoplastic pulmonary artery.

On a theory for the passive transport of solute through semipermeable membranes

It has been shown that thin-film dialysis can be performed in such a way that the limiting rate is the rate of entry of the solute into the membrane from the high-concentration side. The rate of diffusion, therefore, reflects the probability of a molecule entering the pores on the surface and does not depend on the resistance to diffusion offered by the internal structure of the membrane. The good correlation, so generally found, of the order of escape times of given solutes with the order of free diffusion rates is thus explained. The data from stretching experiments with wet cellophane, in which the pore structure is distorted, are also explained.

An electron microscopic and radioautographic study on experimental kernicterus. II. Bilirubin movement within neurons and release of waste products via astroglia

Response of the neurons to bilirubin in asphyxiated newborn rabbits was studied in vivo with the use of the electron microscope and radioautographic technics. A morphologic basis for the mode of intraneuronal bilirubin movement in kernicterus has been established. The absorbed bilirubin had ready access to the Golgi complex from the dendrite through the neurotubules by a mechanism of centripetal dendroplasmic flow. The endoplasmic reticulum provided a subcellular canalicular system for the directed passage from the Golgi complex to the nuclear membrane. Proximodistal flow of bilirubin in the axoplasm caused spotty destruction of axons. The release of waste products from the affected neurons toward the capillaries is very likely an effect of reverse transastroglial transport.

Treatment of edema disease of swine

Antihistamine (Allermin) was used sucessfully in the treatment of naturally occurring edema disease of swine under the field and laboratory conditions. A high recovery rate (88.8%) was obtained in the group of pigs with mild clinical signs. The intravenous route of Allermin administration had definite beneficial value. The release of histamine induced by circulating immune-complexes may be responsible for the clinical signs characteristic of edema disease. Three pigs that recovered clinically following the Allermin treatment were examined histologically. Fibrinoid persisted in the vascular walls at least 30 days after the initiation of the treatment. The fibrinoid vasculitis, generalized eosinophilia at the tissue level, and favorable response of pigs to antihistamine treatment suggest that edema disease may be caused by allergy.

A case of feline papilliferous mammary adenocarcinoma with widespread metastases

A papilliferous mammary adenocarcinoma with generalized metastasis, including multiple involvement of the brain, was found in a 14-year old female native born cat. No nervous signs except some behaviorial changes were noted.
