Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and rapid prototyping technology (RPT) of multislice spiral computed tomography angiography (CTA) was applied to prepare physical models of the heart and ventricular septal defects of tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) patients in order to explore their applications in the diagnosis and treatment of this complex heart disease. CTA data of 35 ToF patients were collected to prepare l:l 3D solid models using digital 3D reconstruction and RPT, and the resultant models were used intraoperatively as reference. The operations of all 35 patients were completed under the guidance of the 3D solid model, without difficulty. Intraoperative findings of the patients were consistent with the morphological and size changes of the 3D solid model, and no significant differences were found between the patches obtained from the 3D solid model and the actual intraoperative measurements (t = 0.83, P = 0.412). 3D reconstruction and RPT of multislice spiral CTA can accurately and intuitively reflect the anatomy of ventricular septal defects in ToF patients, providing the foundation for a solid model of the complex congenital heart.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The current study aimed to analyze the short-term and long-term curative effects of nitric oxide (NO) inhalation combined with high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) on neonatal severe hypoxemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 98 neonates meeting the inclusion criteria were retrospectively analyzed. The control group comprised of 48 neonates and the NO inhalation group consisted of 50 neonates. In the control group, conventional mechanical ventilation was replaced by HFOV. In the experimental group, NO inhalation combined with HFOV was performed. The death rates within 28 days, mechanical ventilation and oxygen therapy time, and complications in both groups were observed. The survivors in both groups were followed up for 18 months for neural development evaluation. RESULTS The treatment group showed a significantly lower death rate and noticeably shorter mechanical ventilation and oxygen therapy time than the control group (8% vs. 22.9% with t = 4.20 andp < 0.05; 5.84 ± 3.36 days vs. 8.05 ± 5.48 days with t = 2.42 and p < 0.05; and 8.02 ± 4.31 days vs. 12.45 ± 5.14 days with t = 4.63 and p < 0.001). They did not show significant differences with regards to the complications and the incidences of cerebral palsy, hearing and visual impairments, and severe nervous damage (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION NO inhalation combined with HFOV significantly decreases the death rate of neonates with severe hypoxemia and reduces their mechanical ventilation and oxygen therapy time. It does not increase early adverse effects or affect long-term neurodevelopment.

Abstract
Ziram is a dimethyldithiocarbamate fungicide which can cause intraneuronal calcium (Ca(2+)) dysregulation and subsequently neuronal death. The signaling mechanisms underlying ziram-induced Ca(2+) dyshomeostasis and neurotoxicity are not fully understood. NCX3 is the third isoform of the sodium-calcium exchanger (NCX) family and plays an important role in regulating Ca(2+) homeostasis in excitable cells. We previously generated a mouse model deficient for the sodium-calcium exchanger 3 and showed that NCX3 is protective against ischemic damage. In the present study, we aim to examine whether NCX3 exerts a similar role against toxicological injury caused by the pesticide ziram. Our data show baby hamster kidney (BHK) cells stably transfected with NCX3 (BHK-NCX3) are more susceptible to ziram toxicity than cells transfected with the empty vector (BHK-WT). Increased toxicity in BHK-NCX3 was associated with a rapid rise in cytosolic Ca(2+) concentration [Ca(2+)]i induced by ziram. Profound mitochondrial dysfunction and ATP depletion were also observed in BHK-NCX3 cells following treatment with ziram. Lastly, primary dopaminergic neurons lacking NCX3 (NCX3(-/-)) were less sensitive to ziram neurotoxicity than wildtype control dopaminergic neurons. These results demonstrate that NCX3 genetic deletion protects against ziram-induced neurotoxicity and suggest NCX3 and its downstream molecular pathways as key factors involved in ziram toxicity. Our study identifies new molecular events through which pesticides (e.g. ziram) can lead to pathological features of degenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and indicates new targets to slow down neuronal degeneration.

Abstract
AIMS The 5-year, open-label, prospective, observational helping evaluate reduction in obesity (HERO) study (N = 1106) examines efficacy and safety of the LAP-BAND AP(®) laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (LAGB) in obese patients. This interim analysis assessed the control of type 2 diabetes (T2D), 1 year after the implantation of the LAGB. METHODS Baseline T2D was defined by chart review or use of antidiabetic medications or haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) ≥ 7.0%. Control of T2D at 1 year was defined as A1c <7.0% (with or without antidiabetic medications). RESULTS After 1 year, 187 of 273 patients with T2D at baseline had adequate data available to assess T2D status, of which 135 patients (72.2%) achieved target control of T2D compared with 42.8% control rate at baseline. Independent predictors of achieving target control at 1 year included the following: (i) shorter diabetes duration odds ratio (OR) 0.914 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.839, 0.995, p = 0.038], (ii) not using insulin therapy OR 0.16 (95% CI, 0.06, 0.47, p < 0.001) and (iii) greater mean % weight loss OR 1.176 (95% CI, 1.093, 1.266, p < 0.001). Patients using insulin at baseline were 84% less likely to achieve control of T2D after 1 year; each additional year of diabetes at baseline reduced the likelihood of good control by 9%; and each 1% of weight loss increases the likelihood of good control by 18%. Rates of device-related adverse events and reoperations were low and were not significantly different between patients with and without baseline T2D at 1 year. CONCLUSIONS Greater % weight loss, not using insulin therapy, and shorter disease duration predicted increased likelihood of target control of T2D, 1 year after implantation of the LAGB.

Abstract
The PHENIX experiment has measured open heavy-flavor production via semileptonic decay over the transverse momentum range 1 < p(T) < 6 GeV/c at forward and backward rapidity (1.4 < |y| < 2.0) in d+Au and p + p collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. In central d+Au collisions, relative to the yield in p + p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, a suppression is observed at forward rapidity (in the d-going direction) and an enhancement at backward rapidity (in the Au-going direction). Predictions using nuclear-modified-parton-distribution functions, even with additional nuclear-p(T) broadening, cannot simultaneously reproduce the data at both rapidity ranges, which implies that these models are incomplete and suggests the possible importance of final-state interactions in the asymmetric d + Au collision system. These results can be used to probe cold-nuclear-matter effects, which may significantly affect heavy-quark production, in addition to helping constrain the magnitude of charmonia-breakup effects in nuclear matter.
