Determination and bioavailability of ampicillin

1. Spectrophotometric determination of ampicillin showed comparable results with microbiological assay. 2. A bioavailability study with five brands of ampicillin revealed variations in the serum concentration at 3 hr. but showed somewhat similar concentrations at 6 hr. The results have been discussed.

Brain levels of chloradiazepoyide in rats

The time-and dose-dependent uptake of chlordiazepoxide by the brain of rats was investigated and correlated with the blood levels of the drug. Peak concentration in the brain was reached in 10 min after i.p. injection of 25 mg/kg, and in 5 min with a dose of 50 mg/kg of the drug. Retention of chlordiazepoxide by the brain showed different characteristics dependeing on the size of the dose used.

Studies on the nutritional status of expectant mothers and newborn babies

Heights, weights, haemoglobin, total proteins and albumin-globulin (A/G) ratio of 157 pregnant women in their last trimester of pregnancy are reported along with heights, weights, haemoglobin and albumin-globulin ratio of newborn babies. The results have been discussed.

Red cell carbonic anhydrase activity in duodenal ulcer

Fortyone patients (34 males and 7 females) suffering from duodenal ulcer (diagnosed radiologically) were examined for red cell carbonic anhydrase activity. They had significantly high (P less than 0.001) activity of the enzyme when compared with a control group of normal healthy individuals.

Effects of tranquillising, antidepressant and central nervous system stimulant drugs on the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) level of rat brain

The level of y-aminobutyric acid (GABA) was determined in the brain of rats 1 hr. after i.p. injection of chlorpromazine, prochlorperazine, diazepam, trimipramine, methamphetamine and nikethamide. Diazepam increased, and, trimipramine and amphetamine decreased the brain GABA level over wide dose ranges. Low doses of chlorpromazine and prochlorperazine increased but high doses of the drugs reduced the GABA level. Low doses of nikethamide reduced whereas high doses increased the level of GABA. The effects of the drugs have been discussed in relation to the brain GABA level.

Serum and red cell cholinesterase activity in duodenal ulcer

Sixty-eight patients suffering from active duodenal ulcer (diagnozed radiologically) were examined for serum cholinesterase (50 patients) and red cell cholinesterase (18 patients) activity. In all these patients serum or red cell cholinesterase activity were found to be significantly low when compared with 56 normal individuals (controls). The low level of cholinesterase activity may be regarded as a pathogenic component of duodenal ulcer.
