A new aminoglycoside antibiotic, sannamycin C and its 4-N-glycyl derivative

Streptomyces sannanensis KC-7038 used for the production of sannamycins A and B has also produced another antibiotic sannamycin C, in the culture broth. Physico-chemical characterization revealed that sannamycin C is a new aminoglycoside antibiotic having 6-N-methylpurpurosamine C and 2-deoxy-3-epi-fortamine. Its 4-N-glycyl derivative indicated inhibitory activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria containing aminoglycoside resistant strains.

Studies on familial amyloid polyneuropathy in Ogawa Village, Japan

A newly discovered large concentration of familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP) in Japan is clinically outlined. The importance of the urinary secretion of IgA in these cases is stressed. Dimethyl sulfoxide administration to these patients induced clinical improvements accompanied by increased excretion of low molecular weight proteins. Amino acid composition of amyloid protein of the Ogawa village-type FAP cases was similar to that of primary amyloidosis.

A new broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic complex, sporaricin. I. Fermentation, isolation and characterization

Two new aminoglycoside antibiotics, sporaricins A (C17H35N5O5) and B (C15H32N4O4) produced by a rare actinomycetales, Saccharopolyspora hirsuta subsp. kobensis have been isolated by column chromatography on a cation-exchange resin. Sporaricin A is highly active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including aminoglycoside-resistant strains.

Echo guided percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography with puncture transducer

Conventional percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) has some disadvantages because it is customarily performed blindly. If the bile duct is made visible, these disadvantages are eliminated. The biliary tree, if dilated, can be clearly delineated by ultrasound technique. By combining the B-mode examination of the biliary tract with the ultrasonic puncture transducer, percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography was performed successfully in 16 examinations on 12 patients. PTC needle could be inserted directly into the lumen of the bile duct without appreciable difficulty. The echo guided PTC was found to be an easier, safer, and more reliable method than the conventional blind technique.

A multiclinic double-blind trial of pyridinolcarbamate and inositol niacinate in ischemic ulcer due to chronic arterial occlusion

A double-blind multiclinic trial compared the efficacies of pyridinolcarbamate and inositol niacinate in the patients with the ischemic ulcer due to chronic arterial occlusion. A thrice-daily dose of 1.5 g of pyridinolcarbamate or 1.2 g of inositol niacinate was given at random to the patients during cold seasons, and the effectiveness of treatment was assessed mainly on the basis of the clinical course of the ischemic ulcer and the rest pain. The patients were classified into 4- and 6-week groups. Beneficial results were recorded in 16 of 32 cases (50.0%) of the 4-week pyridinolcarbamate group, and in 24 of 42 cases (57.1%) of the 4-week inositol niacinate group. In the 6-week group favorable results were observed in 54 of 79 cases (68.4%) on pyridinolcarbamate, and in 36 of 74 cases (48.6%) on inositol niacinate. Although sympathectomy is currently indicated for these ischemic lesions, long-term treatment with pyridinolcarbamate is recommended on the basis of the finding that the 6-week treatment appears superior to the 4-week treatment and also to the 6-week treatment with inositiol niacinate.
