Abstract
Objective To evaluate the safety and efficacy of percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) combined with simultaneous transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with microvascular invasion (MVI) or extrahepatic metastases (EHM). Methods Between August 2012 and April 2017, 101 patients with MVI/EHM of HCC underwent percutaneous MWA combined with simultaneous TACE at our center. The clinical data were collected and analyzed for survival and prognostic factors. Results The mean follow-up time was 23.6 ± 14.7 months. One patient had grade 3 complications, and the median overall survival was 12.0 months (95% confidence interval 9.7–14.3). Multivariate analysis showed that Child-Pugh class, serum alpha-fetoprotein level, and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status were independent factors of survival. Conclusion Our results suggest that percutaneous MWA combined with simultaneous TACE is a safe and effective treatment for HCC with MVI/EHM.

Abstract
This study reports a novel intrabridging strategy to improve the antifouling performance of a thin-film composite (TFC) membrane. We demonstrate that the addition of Ca2+ during the interfacial polymerization reaction led to the formation of stable Ca2+-carboxyl complexes within the polyamide rejection layer. This intrabridging of carboxyl groups by Ca2+ effectively sequestrated them, reducing their availability for binding divalent metal ions in the aqueous solution and for forming foulant-metal-membrane interbridges. Membrane fouling and cleaning experiments confirmed improved flux stability and fouling reversibility for the Ca2+ modified membranes. The greatly enhanced antifouling performance of these membranes, together with their better surface hydrophilicity and greater water permeability, makes the intrabridging approach highly attractive in overcoming the classical permeability-selectivity-antifouling trade-off. Our findings pave a new direction for synthesizing high-performance TFC membranes.

Abstract
Olfaction in insects has a critical role in recognizing the host, finding food, and choosing mating partners, as well as avoiding predators. Odorant receptors (ORs), which are housed in the dendritic membrane of sensory neurons and extended into the lymph of sensilla on insect antennae, are participating in the detection of volatile compounds in insects. In the present study, we identified an OR gene, named MsepOR13, in the oriental armyworm Mythimna separata (Walker). Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction revealed that MsepOR13 was expressed mainly in the antennae of male and female moths. In in vitro heterologous expression experiments, MsepOR13 was widely tuned to 32 of the 67 different compounds tested. Furthermore, MsepOR13 responded to eugenol at a low concentration of 10-9 M, with an EC50 value of 3.91 × 10-6 M. The high sensitivity suggests an important role for the OR13 gene in the moth olfactory system.

Abstract
The microRNA miR-8-3p is conserved among insects and closely involved in development and immunity, but its functions in vivo are unexplored in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum. Here, we show that miR-8-3p was highly expressed in late larva and early adult stages, as determined by quantitative real-time PCR. It was enriched in the fat body and cuticle in late larval tissues and abundant in the head and cuticle in early adult tissues, indicating this microRNA plays important roles during T. castaneum development. Specific inhibition of miR-8-3p in late larvae led to metamorphosis defects in the development of wings, eyes, legs and embryo. Moreover, a series of genes related to organism development were identified as miR-8-3p targets by computational prediction and microRNA-messenger RNA interaction validation, including Wingless, Eyg, Fpps and Sema-1a. These genes were critical for the regulation of the larva-to-adult transition. Eyg, as a functional target of miR-8-3p, participates in eye development, which was further confirmed by luciferase assay and loss-of-function analyses. In brief, miR-8-3p is broadly involved in the development of wings, eyes and legs through its target genes and has extensive regulatory roles during T. castaneum development.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the superior relationship between blood lipid- and cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related hematological parameters using superior grey relational analysis (GRA).
Design/methodology/approach
A total of 294 individuals who underwent simultaneous routine blood examination and blood lipid examination in the Physical Examination Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College were included in this study. Superior GRA was performed to find out the superior factor in CVD-related hematological parameters and blood lipids. CVD-related hematological parameters included red blood cell distribution width, white cell count, and platelet count, platelet distribution width, mean platelet volume, as well as platelet crit. The indicators of blood lipids analyzed here consist of low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, triglyceride and total cholesterol.
Findings
The results showed that all the grey relational degree of hematological parameters and blood lipids were over 0.8; the superior factor in hematological parameters was PLT, whereas TC was the superior factor in blood lipids.
Practical implications
Findings of this study suggested that hematological parameters are closely related to blood lipids and a potential role for hematological parameters in the prediction of dyslipidemia, which need further study; TC has the greatest influence on hematological parameters, whereas TG displays a minimal impact.
Originality/value
To the authors’ best knowledge, it was the first study to analyze the relationship between various CVD-related hematological parameters and blood lipids via superior GRA.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the value of the intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography during the aortic valve reconstruction. Methods: The echocardiographic features were retrospectively summarized in 19 patients (male: 15 cases; female: 4 cases; age ranged from 12 to 65 years, mean age: 37.7 years) with aortic valve reconstruction at Beijing Anzhen Hospital between October 2014 and October 2016. Results: The findings of the neo-aortic valve on the transesophageal echocardiography included the slightly thickened and hyperechogenicity of the commission, especially the central coaptation point of the neo-valve. Trace aortic regurgitation was noted in 9 cases after operation, mild aortic regurgitation in 1 case and no aortic regurgitation in 9 cases. The velocity of the aortic valve increased significantly in 2 cases. Compared with pre-operation, the diameter of ascending aorta[(32.7±6.1) mm vs (36.4±6.3) mm, P<0.001]and the inner diameter of left ventricle[(48.3±6.1) mm vs (59.1±7.3) mm, P<0.001]decreased significantly after operation, the coaptation length of aortic valve[(6.6±1.3) mm vs (2.2±0.7) mm, P<0.001]significantly increased than that of pre-operation. The mean immediate velocity after operation (175 cm/s) was slightly higher than that (165 cm/s) of 3-month follow-up after surgery, but with no significant difference (P=0.367). Severe aortic regurgitation was found 15 days after operation in 1 case and 12 months after operation in 2 cases. Conclusion: Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography is a useful tool to evaluate the result of the aortic valve reconstruction.

Abstract
Transmission optical diffraction gratings composed of periodic slices of a ferromagnetic liquid crystal and a conventional photoresist polymer are demonstrated. Dependence of diffraction efficiencies of various diffraction orders on an in-plane external magnetic field is investigated. It is shown that diffraction properties can be effectively tuned by magnetic fields as low as a few mT. The tuning mechanism is explained in the framework of a simple empirical model and also by numerical simulations based on the rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA). The obtained results provide a proof of principle of operation of magnetically tunable liquid crystalline diffractive optical elements applicable in contactless schemes for control of optical signals.

Abstract
Gallium and gallium-based alloys, typical types of liquid metals with unique physiochemical properties, are emerging as a next generation of functional materials in versatile biomedical applications. However, the exploration of their biomedical performance is currently insufficient, and their intrinsic low oxidative resistance is a key factor blocking their further clinical translation. Herein, we report on the surface engineering of liquid metal-based nanoplatforms by an inorganic silica nanoshell based on a novel but facile sonochemical synthesis for highly efficient, targeted, and near-infrared (NIR)-triggered photothermal tumor hyperthermia in the NIR-II biowindow. The inorganic silica-shell engineering of liquid metal significantly enhances the photothermal performance of the liquid metal core as reflected by enhanced NIR absorption, improved photothermal stability by oxidation protection, and abundant surface chemistry for surface-targeted engineering to achieve enhanced tumor accumulation. Systematic in vitro cell-level evaluation and in vivo tumor xenograft assessment demonstrate that (Arg-Gly-Asp) RGD-targeted and silica-coated nanoscale liquid metal substantially induces phototriggered cancer-cell death and photothermal tumor eradication, accompanied by high in vivo biocompatibility and easy excretion out of the body. This work provides the first paradigm for surface-inorganic engineering of liquid metal-based nanoplatforms for achieving multiple desirable therapeutic performances, especially for combating cancer.

Abstract
The mechanical properties of crystalline phase of glass ceramics are critical. This study aimed to evaluate wear resistance of different crystalline-reinforced dental chairside computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) glass ceramics. Materials of feldspar (Vita Mark II, VM), leucite (IPS Empress CAD, EC), lithium disilicate (IPS e.max CAD, EX), lithium disilicate enriched with zirconia (Vita Suprinity, VS), and enamel were embedded, grounded, and polished, respectively. Samples were indented with a Vickers hardness tester to test the fracture resistance (KIC). Two-body wear tests were performed in a reciprocal ball-on-flat configuration under artificial saliva. The parameters of load force (50 N), reciprocating amplitude (500 μm), frequency (2 Hz), and the test cycle (10,000 cycles) were selected. Specimen microstructure, indentation morphology, and wear scars were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), optical microscopy, and three-dimensional profile microscopy. EX, VS, and EC demonstrated significantly higher KIC values than the enamel, while ceramic materials showed smaller wear depth results. Cracks, massive delamination, and shallow plow were seen on the enamel worn scar. Long deep plow, delamination, and brittle cracks are more common for VM and EC, and short shallow plow and smooth subsurface are the characteristics of EX and VS. Greater fracture toughness values indicated higher wear resistances of the materials for the test glass ceramics. The CAD/CAM glass ceramics performed greater wear resistance than enamel. Feldspar- and leucite-reinforced glass ceramics illustrated better wear resistance similar to enamel than lithium disilicate glass ceramics, providing amicable matching with the opposite teeth.

Abstract
Impaired osteoblast proliferation plays fundamental roles in microgravity‐induced bone loss, and cell cycle imbalance may result in abnormal osteoblast proliferation. However, whether microgravity exerts an influence on the cell cycle in osteoblasts or what mechanisms may underlie such an effect remains to be fully elucidated. Herein, we confirmed that simulated microgravity inhibits osteoblast proliferation. Then, we investigated the effect of mechanical unloading on the osteoblast cell cycle and found that simulated microgravity arrested the osteoblast cell cycle in the G2 phase. In addition, our data showed that cell cycle arrest in osteoblasts from simulated microgravity was mainly because of decreased cyclin B1 expression. Furthermore, miR‐181c‐5p directly inhibited cyclin B1 protein translation by binding to a target site in the 3′UTR. Lastly, we demonstrated that inhibition of miR‐181c‐5p partially counteracted cell cycle arrest and decreased the osteoblast proliferation induced by simulated microgravity. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that simulated microgravity inhibits cell proliferation and induces cell cycle arrest in the G2 phase in primary mouse osteoblasts partially through the miR‐181c‐5p/cyclin B1 pathway. This work may provide a novel mechanism of microgravity‐induced detrimental effects on osteoblasts and offer a new avenue to further investigate bone loss induced by mechanical unloading.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore cytogenetic characteristics and fertility of carriers of complex chromosome rearrangements (CCR) from Henan region. METHODS G-banded karyotyping analysis was carried out on peripheral blood lymphocytes derived from 160 601 patients with reproductive abnormalities. Relevant literature was retrieved from domestic and overseas databases. Cytogenetic characteristics and clinical data of CCR carriers were analyzed. RESULTS Twenty-seven CCR carriers were identified among the 160 601 patients. In addition, 6 cases were identified from the database research. Among the 33 CCR carriers, there were 17 three- and four-way exchange cases (51.5%), 10 double two-way exchange cases (30.3%), and 6 unusual CCRs (18.2%). Infertility was noted in 14 (42.4%) of the CCR carries. A total of 38 pregnancies were achieved in the remaining 19 cases (57.6%), among which spontaneous abortions or embryonic losses have occurred in 89.5% (34/38), multiple congenital abnormalities have occurred in 7.9% (3/38), while phenotypically normal offspring have occurred in 2.6% (1/38). Chromosomes 1, 11, 2, 4, 5 and 12 were more frequently involved, with their breakpoints occurred more than 3 times at 1p22, 11q23, 12p13 and 22q11. CONCLUSION CCR carriers are at a higher risk for abnormal pregnancies. Even for those with normal pregnancy, prenatal diagnosis should be provided. Chromosomes and their breakpoints involved in CCR may affect the fertility of CCR carriers. Analyzing the types of CCR and involved chromosomes and breakpoints can facilitate genetic counseling for CCR carriers.

Abstract
Emerging nanocatalytic tumor therapies based on nontoxic but catalytically active inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) for intratumoral production of high-toxic reactive oxygen species have inspired great research interest in the scientific community. Nanozymes exhibiting natural enzyme-mimicking catalytic activities have been extensively explored in biomedicine, mostly in biomolecular detection, yet much fewer researches are available on specific nanocatalytic tumor therapy. This study reports on the construction of an efficient biomimetic dual inorganic nanozyme-based nanoplatform, which triggers cascade catalytic reactions for tumor microenvironment responsive nanocatalytic tumor therapy based on ultrasmall Au and Fe3O4 NPs coloaded dendritic mesoporous silica NPs. Au NPs as the unique glucose oxidase-mimic nanozyme specifically catalyze β-D-glucose oxidation into gluconic acid and H2O2, while the as produced H2O2 is subsequently catalyzed by the peroxidase-mimic Fe3O4 NPs to liberate high-toxic hydroxyl radicals for inducing tumor-cell death by the typical Fenton-based catalytic reaction. Extensive in vitro and in vivo evaluations have demonstrated high nanocatalytic-therapeutic efficacy with a desirable tumor-suppression rate (69.08%) based on these biocompatible composite nanocatalysts. Therefore, this work paves a way for nanocatalytic tumor therapy by rationally designing inorganic nanozymes with multienzymatic activities for achieving high therapeutic efficacy and excellent biosafety simultaneously.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (RRP) improves bone quality in OVX rats through the regulation of bone homeostasis via increasing osteoblastogenesis and decreasing osteoclastogenesis, suggesting it has a potential for the development of new anti-osteoporotic drugs. INTRODUCTION Determine the anti-osteoporotic effect of RRP in ovariectomized (OVX) rats and identify the signaling pathway involved in this process. METHODS OVX rats were treated with RRP aqueous extract for 14 weeks. The serum levels of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-Β ligand (RANKL), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and osteoprotegerin (OPG) were determined by ELISA. Bone histopathological alterations were evaluated by H&E, Alizarin red S, and Safranin O staining. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone microstructure in rat femurs and lumbar bones were determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and micro-computed tomography. Femoral bone strength was detected by a three-point bending assay. The expression of Phospho-glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (p-GSK-3β), GSK-3β, Dickkopf-related protein 1 (DKK1), cathepsin K, OPG, RANKL, IGF-1, Runx2, β-catenin, and p-β-catenin was determined by western blot and/or immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS Treatment of OVX rats with RRP aqueous extract rebuilt bone homeostasis demonstrated by increasing the levels of OPG as well as decreasing the levels of TRAP, RANKL, and ALP in serum. Furthermore, RRP treatment preserved BMD and mechanical strength by increasing cortical bone thickness and epiphyseal thickness as well as improving trabecular distribution in the femurs of OVX rats. In addition, RRP downregulated the expression of DKK1, sclerostin, RANKL, cathepsin K, and the ratio of p-β-catenin to β-catenin, along with upregulating the expression of IGF-1, β-catenin, and Runx2 and the ratio of p-GSK-3β to GSK-3β in the tibias and femurs of OVX rats. Echinacoside, jionoside A1/A2, acetoside, isoacetoside, jionoside B1, and jionoside B2 were identified in the RRP aqueous extract. CONCLUSION RRP attenuates bone loss and improves bone quality in OVX rats partly through its regulation of the canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, suggesting that RRP has the potential to provide a new source of anti-osteoporotic drugs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To provide the anatomic basis for the clinical application of the transpedicular screw fixation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty spine (C2-L5) specimens were used. The width of the pedicle cortex and width of the pedicle medullary cavity (WPC and WPMC), and the height of the pedicle cortex and height of the pedicle medullary cavity (HPC and HPMC) were measured at the isthmus of the pedicle using computed tomography (CT) scanning. RESULTS Width of the pedicle medullary cavity changed in a three-dovetailed-saddle shape with four peaks and three valleys, namely C2 (high), C4`5 (low), T2 (high), T4 (the lowest), T12 (high), L1 (low) and L5 (the highest). HPMC of the cervical pedicle changed in a saddle shape, gradually increasing from C5-L5. WPC, WPMC, HPC and HPMC showed a regular change, respectively. In each segment, the superior border of the pedicle cortex had a nearly consistent thickness to the interior border within an identical pedicle, while the pedicle cortex thickness radio of the medial and lateral border was nearly 3:1 among the cervical pedicles, 2:1 among thoracic pedicles, and 1:1 among lumbar pedicles. CONCLUSIONS Both HPMC and WPMC are the dominant factors for the choice of screw diameter, but HPMC should also be considered in C2-T1 pedicles, especially C6 and C7. Additionally, the screw for C3-6 or T4-6 pedicles should be about 3.0 mm in diameter.

Abstract
The clinical significance of thymosin β4 (Tβ4) expression in bladder transitional cell carcinoma (BTCC) remains unclear. The present study assessed the relationship between the expression of Tβ4 protein and the clinicopathological features, as well as the prognosis of bladder cancer patients. Tβ4 protein expression in 24 normal bladder and 138 primary BTCC tissue specimens was detected by immunohistochemistry, and the association of this expression with BTCC clinicopathological features and recurrence as well as patient survival was analyzed. Tβ4 expression was significantly stronger in BTCC patients than in normal volunteers. The expression of Tβ4 was significantly associated with differentiation capability, tumor stage and lymph node metastasis (P = 0.025, 0.043, and 0.039, respectively). Moreover, Tβ4 expression was positively correlated with integrin-linked kinase (ILK) and β-catenin expression (P = 0.042, 0.031, respectively) and inversely correlated with E-cadherin expression (P = 0.022). In the present cohort of bladder cancer patients, Tβ4 expression was found to be a predictor of poor survival (P < 0.05); however, high Tβ4 expression exhibited unfavorable prognostic value for recurrence. These data suggested that Tβ4 is correlated with the pathogenesis of BTCC. In addition, the patients with higher Tβ4 expression had a shorter survival.
