Measurement of the survival probabilities for hot fusion reactions

We have studied the fission-neutron emission competition in highly excited (274)Hs (Z=108) (where the fission barrier is due to shell effects) formed by a hot fusion reaction. Matching cross bombardments ((26)Mg+(248)Cm and (25)Mg+(248)Cm) were used to identify the properties of first chance fission of (274)Hs. A Harding-Farley analysis of the fission neutrons emitted in the (25)Mg,26+(248)Cm was performed to identify the prescission and postscission components of the neutron multiplicities in each system. (Γn/Γt) for the first chance fission of (274)Hs (E*=63  MeV) is 0.89±0.13; i.e., ∼90% of the highly excited nuclei survive. The high value of that survival probability is due to dissipative effects during deexcitation. A proper description of the survival probabilities of excited superheavy nuclei formed in hot fusion reactions requires consideration of both dynamic and static (shell-related) effects.

Nuclear structure towards N = 40 60Ca: in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy of 58,60Ti

Excited states in the neutron-rich N = 38, 36 nuclei (60)Ti and (58)Ti were populated in nucleon-removal reactions from (61)V projectiles at 90 MeV/nucleon. The γ-ray transitions from such states in these Ti isotopes were detected with the advanced γ-ray tracking array GRETINA and were corrected event by event for large Doppler shifts (v/c ∼ 0.4) using the γ-ray interaction points deduced from online signal decomposition. The new data indicate that a steep decrease in quadrupole collectivity occurs when moving from neutron-rich N = 36, 38 Fe and Cr toward the Ti and Ca isotones. In fact, (58,60)Ti provide some of the most neutron-rich benchmarks accessible today for calculations attempting to determine the structure of the potentially doubly magic nucleus (60)Ca.

Mixed linear model approach for mapping quantitative trait loci underlying crop seed traits

The crop seed is a complex organ that may be composed of the diploid embryo, the triploid endosperm and the diploid maternal tissues. According to the genetic features of seed characters, two genetic models for mapping quantitative trait loci (QTLs) of crop seed traits are proposed, with inclusion of maternal effects, embryo or endosperm effects of QTL, environmental effects and QTL-by-environment (QE) interactions. The mapping population can be generated either from double back-cross of immortalized F2 (IF2) to the two parents, from random-cross of IF2 or from selfing of IF2 population. Candidate marker intervals potentially harboring QTLs are first selected through one-dimensional scanning across the whole genome. The selected candidate marker intervals are then included in the model as cofactors to control background genetic effects on the putative QTL(s). Finally, a QTL full model is constructed and model selection is conducted to eliminate false positive QTLs. The genetic main effects of QTLs, QE interaction effects and the corresponding P-values are computed by Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm for Gaussian mixed linear model via Gibbs sampling. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to investigate the reliability and efficiency of the proposed method. The simulation results showed that the proposed method had higher power to accurately detect simulated QTLs and properly estimated effect of these QTLs. To demonstrate the usefulness, the proposed method was used to identify the QTLs underlying fiber percentage in an upland cotton IF2 population. A computer software, QTLNetwork-Seed, was developed for QTL analysis of seed traits.

Evaluation of bamboo genetic diversity using morphological and SRAP analyses

Bamboo is an important member of the giant grass subfamily Bambusoideae of Poaceae. In this study, 13 bamboo accessions belonging to 5 different genera were subjected to morphological evaluation and sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) analysis. Unweighted pair-group method of arithmetic averages (UPGMA) cluster analysis was used to construct a dendrogram and to estimate the genetic distances among accessions. On the basis of morphological characteristics, the 13 accessions were distinctly classified into 2 major clusters; 3 varieties, PPYX, PGNK, and PLYY were grouped as cluster A, and 10 accessions were categorized under cluster B. Similarity coefficients ranging from 0.23 to 0.96 indicated abundant genetic variation among bamboo varieties. Approximately 38 SRAP primer combinations generated 186 bands, with 150 bands (80.65%) showing polymorphisms among the 13 accessions. Based on SRAP analysis, 13 bamboo accessions were grouped into 3 major clusters. Five species comprised Cluster I (PASL, PLYY, PTSC, SCNK, and BMAK), which belongs to genus Phyllostachys. Cluster II consisted of 5 varieties, PASL, PLYY, PTSC, SCNK, and BMAK; Cluster III included 3 varieties, PGNK, PLSY, and BMRS. Comparison of the results generated by morphological and SRAP analyses showed that the classification based on SRAP markers was more concordant to the taxonomic results of Gamble than that performed using morphological characters, thus suggesting that SRAP analysis is more efficient in evaluating genetic diversity in bamboos compared to morphological analysis. The SRAP technique serves as an alternative method in assessing genetic diversity within bamboo collections.

Wet-chemical synthesis and consolidation of stoichiometric bismuth telluride nanoparticles for improving the thermoelectric figure-of-merit

Bismuth telluride nanoparticles (NPs) have been synthesized using a low-temperature wet-chemical approach from bismuth(III) oleate and tri-n-octylphosphine telluride. The size and shape of the NPs can be controlled by adjusting the temperature, reaction time, and nature of the surfactants and solvents. Aromatic hydrocarbons (toluene, xylenes) and ethers (phenyl- and benzyl-ether) favor the formation of stoichiometric Bi2Te3 NPs of platelike morphology, whereas the presence of oleylamine and 1-dodecanethiol yields Bi-rich Bi2Te3 spherical NPs. XRD, IR, SEM, TEM, and SAED techniques have been used to characterize the obtained products. We show that the surfactants can be efficiently removed from the surface of the NPs using a two-step process employing nitrosonium tetrafluoroborate and hydrazine hydrate. The surfactant-free NPs were further consolidated into high density pellets using cold-pressing and field-assisted sintering techniques. The sintered surfactant-free Bi2Te3 showed electrical and thermal properties comparable to Bi2Te3 materials processed through conventional solid state techniques, and greatly improved over other nanostructured Bi2Te3 materials synthesized by wet-chemical approaches.

A synthetic oxygen carrier in fibrin matrices promotes sciatic nerve regeneration in rats

Tissue-engineering nerve conduits have been studied for a long time in bridging large nerve defects. However, the low oxygen availability within the nerve conduits, which results in death of migratory Schwann cells (SC) or loss of the newly formed tissue's function, is still an obstacle for axonal regeneration. Thus, it was hypothesized that an oxygen-enriched conduit would enhance axonal regeneration and functional recovery in vivo. To address this issue, perfluorotributylamine (PFTBA) enriched fibrin hydrogel was prepared and injected into collagen-chitosan conduits. The conduit containing PFTBA-enriched fibrin hydrogel was then used to bridge a 12-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. The control rats were bridged with collagen-chitosan conduits filled with fibrin matrices without PFTBA. It was found that axonal regeneration and functional recovery in the combined PFTBA group were significantly higher than those in the control group without PFTBA. Further investigations showed that the mRNA and protein levels of S-100, brain-derived neurotrophic factor and nerve growth factor were enhanced by PFTBA at 1 and 3weeks after surgery. However, the mRNA and protein levels of vascular endothelial growth factor were in a similar range between the combined PFTBA group and the control group without PFTBA. In addition, immunohistochemical results showed that the morphological appearances of regenerated nerve and survival of SC were enhanced by PFTBA at 4 and 12weeks after surgery. In conclusion, PFTBA-enriched nerve conduit is capable of enhancing axonal regeneration, which provides a new avenue for achieving better functional recovery in the treatment of nerve defect.

Peroxide Induced Crosslinking and Degradation of PA

Peroxide induced crosslinking and degradation of nylon-12 were experimentally investigated using an on-line electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer. It was found that different types of polymer radicals were involved in various peroxide modification processes. Five-line ESR spectra were observed in the DCP/nylon-12 and TBPB/nylon-12 systems, while the L130/nylon-12 system gave a three-line spectrum initially, followed by a transition to a single line. Based on the radical information, as well as gelation and viscosity measurements, various reaction mechanisms were proposed depending on the type of peroxide. TBPB is in favor of the degradation of nylon-12, while DCP and L130 promote crosslinking of the polymer. The gel formation was followed to facilitate the study of crosslinking kinetics. The initial gelation rate increased linearly with the peroxide concentration and/or temperature. The formation of crosslinked network impeded the crystallization of nylon-12 and reduced the degree of crystallinity. The high crosslinking extent resulted in low melting temperature and heat.
