Abstract
An efficient compact diode-pumped actively Q-switched Nd:GdVO4 laser at 1521 nm is demonstrated by use of the nonlinear optical process of stimulated Raman scattering. With a 13.6-W diode pump power, greater than 1.18 W of 1521-nm average power at a repetition rate of 20 kHz is generated. At a repetition rate of 5 kHz, the pulse width is shorter than 5 ns and the peak power is higher than 20 kW.

Abstract
Unusual ZnO nanostructures have been successfully synthesized via selenium-controlled chemical vapor phase growth on Si (111) substrates at about 500 degrees C. The microstructure and chemical compositional characteristics of the ZnO nanomaterials have been systematically investigated by means of analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM), including energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy. Most of the nanostructures have a belt-like morphology with typical widths of approximately 150 nm and lengths up to several micrometers. All the investigated materials are found to be stoichiometric ZnO with a hexagonal crystal structure. The growth directions for the nanobelts are found to be [1010] and [2110] respectively. Regular-triangle and needle-like heads with diameters only approximately 25-35 nm have been found in the straight nanobelts. High-resolution TEM images indicate that all the nanostructures are single crystals and free of defects. The growth mechanisms of such interesting and unique morphologies are briefly discussed.

Abstract
Generation of efficient subnanosecond self-stimulated Raman pulses by a diode-pumped passively Q-switched Nd:YVO4/Cr4+:YAG laser is demonstrated. Experimental results reveal that self-frequency Raman conversion can be achieved with a c-cut Nd:YVO4 crystal in a nearly hemispherical cavity. At 2.0 W of incident pump power, the self-stimulated Raman laser produces stable 710-ps pulses at a Stokes wavelength of 1178.6 nm with 7.2 microJ of pulse energy at a 17-kHz repetition rate.

Abstract
The development potential of transgenic adult cells after nuclear transfer (NT) was evaluated. Primary ovine granulosa cells (GC(S)) from a slaughter ovary were transfected with pEGFP-N1 plasmid DNA. Three G418-resistance cell lines (A2, B2 and B4) were used as donor cells in NT. A total of 162 NT blastocysts were then frozen with ethylene glycol solution and stored for five months before transplanted into recipients. Twenty-nine frozen thawed NT blastocysts were transferred into 15 synchronized recipients. Twin lambs (6.9%) derived from B2 line were delivered by cesarean section on day 143 but died after birth. A tumor consisting of lung tissues was found on the surface of left lung of the 4-kg lamb and histological analysis indicated that it resembles a hamartoma. DNA analysis confirmed that two lambs were genetically identical to B2 donor cells. Gene insertion and expression have been detected in fibroblasts cells derived from muscle tissues of the lambs. This study indicates that granulosa cell is a suitable cell type for producing transgenic animals by nuclear transfer. Offspring were produced after long-term storage of NT blastocysts.

Abstract
We analytically study the vortex formation associated with the classical periodic orbits in a nonseparable quantum billiard. The influence of vortex formation on the quantum flux in the mesoscopic region is clearly demonstrated. Remarkably, the high-order vortex structures in an equilateral triangle billiard display the triangular, swirl, and kagomè vortex lattices. The relationship between various vortex lattices is found to rely on the relative phase factor in the coherent state.

Abstract
AIM The 20-year period long-term results of porcine bioprosthetic valve use are limited. In addition, the majority of these reports come from Western countries. Given the scanty information reported in Oriental countries, this study was therefore designed to examine 20-year long-term results in patients who received a Carpentier-Edwards porcine bioprosthetic valve in an effort to contribute further information on the long-term clinical performance of porcine prosthetic valves from a viewpoint of results in the Oriental population. METHODS From July 1979 to April 2001, 82 patients received valve replacement with a standard Carpentier-Edwards porcine valve. There were 40 men and 42 women with a mean age of 42.3+/-15.1 years (range 16 to 73 years). Follow-up time extended more than 20 years (mean 10.9+/-3.2 years, range 0.5 to 21.5 years ) for a total of 719.5 patient-years. RESULTS The overall operative mortality was 16.9% (14 of 83 procedures). At 5, 10, 15, and 20 years, the actuarial survival rate of patients was 71.7%, 66.9%, 55.5%, and 44.4%, respectively. Actuarial estimates of freedom from structural valvular deterioration (SVD) at 5, 10, 15, and 17 years were 96.3%, 64.0%, 24.3%, and 24.3%, respectively; from reoperation 96.3%, 64.5%, 24.5%, and 24.5%; from operated valvular endocarditis 96.8%, 92.6%, 92.6%, and 92.6%; and from overall thromboembolism 96.3%, 88.5%, 67.2%, and 52.2%. In normal sinus rhythm, actuarial estimates of freedom from thromboembolism at 5, 10, 15, and 17 years were 100.0%, 100.0%, 81.8%, and 81.8%, respectively. Whereas for those in patients with atrial fibrillation, the estimates of freedom from thromboembolism were 94.5%, 82.4%, 57.7%, and 38.5%. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates the very satisfactory 20-year period long-term performance of freedom from bleeding events, thromboembolism (except in patients with atrial fibrillation), and valvular endocarditis in Oriental patients undergoing replacement with a porcine valve. However, the remarkable rate of SVD and reoperation ensued at 6 years after bioprosthesis implanted which does not differ from the series reported from Western countries.

Abstract
The ability of rabbit spermatozoa to bind exogenous DNA during sperm-mediated gene transfer (SMGT) was tested in our study. Fresh collected semen, or fully capacitated sperm cells, was co-cultured with plasmid DNA labeled with tetramethyrodamine-6-dUTP. Fluorescent spermatozoa were counted before and after DNaseI treatment. Results showed that fluorescent-labeled plasmid DNA could be taken up by capacitated rabbit sperm cells. 66% spermatozoa carried exogenous DNA in the presence of lipofectin. Bovine serum albumin could block this process effectively. Associated DNA was mainly located in the posterior area of the sperm head. In order to verify whether exogenous DNA was carried into the embryo and expressed in the offspring, further SMGT experiments were carried out using the pHM-CR plasmid which contains LacZ and Neomycin genes. beta-galactosidase was expressed in different stages of embryo development and in the tissues of young rabbit as detected by using X-gal staining. Large portion of embryos survived under the selection pressure in G418 containing medium, after SMGT. Transgene integration was further verified by PCR analysis. These results confirmed the ability of rabbit sperm cells to carry transgene into the embryo during in vitro fertilization.

Abstract
We experimentally observe the formation of high-order transverse patterns in a microchip laser with a high degree of frequency degeneracy. With a doughnut pump profile the spontaneous transverse patterns are well localized in the Lissajous trajectories. The observed transverse patterns are reconstructed with a high degree of accuracy by use of the coherent state of quantum theory. The accurate reconstruction suggests that laser resonators can be designed to obtain a more thorough understanding of the quantum-classical connection.

Abstract
Our purpose was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of endovascular treatment of brain-stem arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), reviewing six cases managed in the last 5 years. There were four patients who presented with bleeding, one with a progressive neurological deficit and one with obstructive hydrocephalus. Of the six patients, one showed 100%, one 90%, two 75% and two about 50% angiographic obliteration of the AVM after embolisation; the volume decreased about 75% on average. Five patients had a good outcome and one an acceptable outcome, with a mild postprocedure neurological deficit; none had further bleeding during midterm follow-up. Endovascular management of a brain-stem AVM may be an alternative to treatment such as radiosurgery and microsurgery in selected cases. It may be not as risky as previously thought. Embolisation can reduce the size of the AVM and possibly make it more treatable by radiosurgery and decrease the possibility of radiation injury.

Abstract
The selection rules for spontaneous coherent waves in mesoscopic systems are experimentally studied using the transverse patterns of a microcavity laser and theoretically analyzed using the theory of SU(2) coherent states. Comparison of the experimental results with the theoretical analyses reveals that an amplitude factor A should be included in the representation of the partially coherent states. The determination of the amplitude factor A is found to be associated with the constraint of minimum energy uncertainty.

Abstract
Tanyang is one of the most important sheep breeds in the northwest of China. However, there is no detailed data on sexual development and timing of puberty/sexual maturity of this breed. This experiment was designed to study the relationships between growth rate and sexual development by measuring body weight, testis diameter, and plasma testosterone concentrations, and observing sexual behavior through puberty from 3 to 8 months old of entire Tanyang ram lambs. At same time, to assess the potential efficacy and welfare benefits of non-surgical castration, the effect of active immunization against gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) on sexual development and growth rate on ram lambs was evaluated, and compared with surgically castrated and entire lambs. The results showed that body weight increased at a constant rate from 3 to 8 months old of age. Testis diameter increased rapidly between 3 and 5 months, followed by a period of slow growth. Plasma testosterone concentrations increased sharply from 3 to 6 months of age (P<0.05), after which there were no significant changes from 6 to 8 months of age. Sexual behavior started from 5 months of age. After ram lambs were immunized against GnRH at 3 months of age, there was no increase in testis diameter in the first 4 months after immunization. Plasma testosterone concentrations remained at similar levels to surgically castrated lambs until 6 months of age, and the onset of sexual behavior was delayed, compared with entire ram lambs. GnRH immunization and surgical castration had no significant effect on the body weight by the end of this experiment. These results suggest that 4-5 months of age is a critical period for pubertal changes and testosterone plays an important role in the initiation of puberty and sexual maturity of Tanyang ram lambs in China. In addition, a single shot GnRH immunization at 3 months, acting as an alternative to surgical castration, is a practical method for Chinese Tanyang ram lambs, and provides animal welfare benefits.

Abstract
We experimentally investigate the formation of a vector polarization pattern from an isotropic microcavity laser. It is found that the orthogonal components of the observed pattern are localized on the geometrical rays. The connection between eigenfunctions and geometrical rays is analytically constructed by using the SU(2) coherent states. With the analytical function form, the observed vector pattern is completely reconstructed and the vector vortex lattice is apparent.

Abstract
We extend the presentation of the SU(2) coherent states to analytically construct the wave function concentrated on high-order classical periodic orbits in a square billiard. With the constructed wave function, the localization of the wave pattern is found to be very efficient. We also analyze the vortices arising from the singular points of the quantum phase for the constructed coherent states. It is found that the wave interference gives rise to the appearance of vortex lattices in the probability current density associated with the high-order periodic orbits. Moreover, the topological charge of the vortex is in general nonintegral except for the periodic orbits with the same winding number to the sides of the square.
