Abstract
Ultrafast laser techniques have revealed extraordinary spin dynamics in magnetic materials that equilibrium descriptions of magnetism cannot explain. Particularly important for future applications is understanding non-equilibrium spin dynamics following laser excitation on the nanoscale, yet the limited spatial resolution of optical laser techniques has impeded such nanoscale studies. Here we present ultrafast diffraction experiments with an X-ray laser that probes the nanoscale spin dynamics following optical laser excitation in the ferrimagnetic alloy GdFeCo, which exhibits macroscopic all-optical switching. Our study reveals that GdFeCo displays nanoscale chemical and magnetic inhomogeneities that affect the spin dynamics. In particular, we observe Gd spin reversal in Gd-rich nanoregions within the first picosecond driven by the non-local transfer of angular momentum from larger adjacent Fe-rich nanoregions. These results suggest that a magnetic material's microstructure can be engineered to control transient laser-excited spins, potentially allowing faster (~ 1 ps) spin reversal than in present technologies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prostate cancer (PCa) gene expression marker 1 (PCGEM1), a long noncoding RNA, has drawn increasing attention for its important role in PCa. However, the association between genetic variations in the PCGEM1 gene and risk of PCa has not been investigated yet. METHODS We investigated the effect of two tagging single-nucleotide polymorphism (tSNPs; rs6434568 and rs16834898) in PCGEM1 gene on PCa risk in the Chinese men. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the association. RESULTS We found a significantly decreased risk of PCa for rs6434568 AC and AC/AA genotype (adjusted OR=0.76, 95% CI=0.60-0.97 for AC; adjusted OR=0.76, 95% CI=0.61-0.96 for AC/AA), as well as rs16834898 AC and AC/CC genotype (adjusted OR=0.76, 95% CI=0.59-0.97 for AC; adjusted OR=0.79, 95% CI=0.62-0.99 for AC/CC), compared with the CC and AA genotypes, respectively. When we evaluated these two tSNPs together based on the risk alleles (that is, rs6434568 C and rs16834898 A), we found that the combined genotypes with four risk alleles were associated with an increased risk of PCa compared with those carrying 0-3 risk alleles (1.53, 1.19-1.97), and this increased risk was more pronounced among subjects of≤70 years (1.80, 1.24-2.62), Gleason score≥7 (1.68, 1.28-2.22) and PSA level≥20 (1.64, 1.24-2.18). CONCLUSIONS Our results indicated that PCGEM1 polymorphisms may contribute to PCa risk in Chinese men. Additional functional analyses are required to detect the detailed mechanism underlying the observed association.

Abstract
In recent years, many studies have focused on the roles of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) due to their contribution to tissue regeneration and tumorigenesis. However, the full profile of the roles of MSCs in gastric diseases has not been established. In this review, we aim to provide an overview on the roles of MSCs on cell lesion and regeneration in gastric diseases, including gastric ulcer, premalignant conditions and cancer. We will also discuss the mechanisms underlying the behaviors of MSCs in these diseases.

Abstract
Background: This phase 2 study evaluated trebananib (AMG 386), an investigational peptide-Fc fusion protein that neutralises the interaction between angiopoietins-1/2 and the Tie2 receptor, plus FOLFIRI as second-line treatment for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Methods: Patients had adenocarcinoma of the colon or rectum with progression within 6 months of receiving only one prior fluoropyrimidine/oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy regimen for metastatic disease. All patients received FOLFIRI and were randomised 2 : 1 to also receive intravenous trebananib 10 mg kg−1 once weekly (QW) (Arm A) or placebo QW (Arm B). The primary end point was investigator-assessed progression-free survival (PFS). Results: One hundred and forty-four patients were randomised (Arms A/B, n=95/49). Median PFS in Arms A and B was 3.5 and 5.2 months (hazard ratio (HR) 1.23; 95% CI, 0.81–1.86; P=0.33) and median overall survival (OS) was 11.9 and 8.8 months, respectively (HR 0.90; 95% CI; 0.53–1.54; P=0.70). Objective response rate (ORR) was 14% and 0% in Arms A and B, respectively. Incidence of grade ⩾3 adverse events was similar between treatment arms (Arm A, 61% Arm B, 65%) and included pulmonary embolism (1%/4%), deep vein thrombosis (5%/2%), and hypertension (1%/0%). Conclusion: Administration of trebananib plus FOLFIRI did not prolong PFS compared with placebo plus FOLFIRI. Toxicities were manageable and consistent with those known for FOLFIRI and trebananib.

Abstract
The x-ray intensities made available by x-ray free electron lasers (FEL) open up new x-ray matter interaction channels not accessible with previous sources. We report here on the resonant generation of Kα emission, that is to say the production of copious Kα radiation by tuning the x-ray FEL pulse to photon energies below that of the K edge of a solid aluminum sample. The sequential absorption of multiple photons in the same atom during the 80 fs pulse, with photons creating L-shell holes and then one resonantly exciting a K-shell electron into one of these holes, opens up a channel for the Kα production, as well as the absorption of further photons. We demonstrate rich spectra of such channels, and investigate the emission produced by tuning the FEL energy to the K-L transitions of those highly charged ions that have transition energies below the K edge of the cold material. The spectra are sensitive to x-ray intensity dependent opacity effects, with ions containing L-shell holes readily reabsorbing the Kα radiation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE MicroRNA-221 (miR-221), which is located on chromosome X, is an oncogenic microRNA that is involved in several human malignancies. This study aimed to characterize the role of miR-221 in the initiation and malignant progression of gastric cancer. METHODS The level of miR-221 expression in 92 pairs of primary gastric tumour tissue and adjacent nontumour tissue was quantified by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The relationship between the miR-221 level and clinicopathological features was explored. RESULTS MiR-221 was up-regulated in 88% (81/92) of gastric cancer tissue samples compared with their paired adjacent nontumour tissue samples. High expression of miR-221 showed a significant correlation with advanced tumour-node-metastasis stage, local invasion and lymphatic metastasis. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analyses revealed that miR-221 overexpression was an unfavourable prognostic factor for overall survival in patients with gastric cancer. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that miR-221 is a novel prognostic indicator in gastric cancer and may be a potential target for diagnosis and gene therapy.

Abstract
Rapid progress in functional genomics is yielding unparalleled opportunities for cancer biomarker discovery. Several procedures including data collection, analysis, verification, and visualization are necessary to identify cancer biomarkers from continuously updated microarray data, which are derived from multiple tissue sources using various methods. BioMarker is designed to integrate these procedures in a user-friendly manner, for practical application by cancer researcher and clinicians. From the feedback of clinical and research application, BioMarker is the first effort to provide a system that facilitates all aspects of biomarker discovery from microarray datasets.

Abstract
A molecular linkage map of cultivated oat composed of 561 loci has been developed using 71 recombinant inbred lines from a cross between Avena byzantina cv. Kanota and A. sativa cv. Ogle. The loci are mainly restriction fragment length polymorphisms detected by oat cDNA clones from leaf, endosperm, and root tissue, as well as by barley leaf cDNA clones. The loci form 38 linkage groups ranging in size from 0.0 to 122.1 cM (mean, 39 cM) and consist of 2-51 loci each (mean, 14). Twenty-nine loci remain unlinked. The current map size is 1482 cM and the total size, on the basis of the number of unlinked loci, is estimated to be 2932.0 cM. This indicates that this map covers at least 50% of the cultivated oat genome. Comparisons with an A-genome diploid oat map and between linkage groups exhibiting homoeology to each other indicate that several major chromosomal rearrangements exist in cultivated oat. This map provides a tool for marker-assisted selection, quantitative trait loci analyses, and studies of genome organization in oat.

Abstract
The application of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) sensor networks pervasively to the hospital environment has the potential to improve efficiencies in operational aspects through accurate capture of fine grained data. The sensor nodes generate large amounts of real or near real-time data. Understanding and managing these data in the context of the hospital pose challenges for the middleware which has to connect sensor networks with hospital applications. In this paper we propose an edgeware paradigm of organizing hospital RFID sensor data based on the notion of an event. The event is defined and its properties are discussed. A three layered event representation and reasoning model is developed to map raw sensory information to semantic events in the application domains. A prototype system, called eWellness is build for the test of the local hospital.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to review the high-resolution CT (HRCT) findings in patients with pulmonary infection after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) and to determine distinguishing findings among the various types of infection. METHODS This study included 453 consecutive liver transplant recipients with pulmonary infection, on whom HRCT of the chest was performed within 24 h of the beginning of symptoms and for whom proven diagnosis had taken place within 1 week of the onset of symptoms. Two radiologists analysed the CT images; final decisions regarding the findings were reached by consensus. RESULTS Bacterial and viral pneumonia made up the bulk of infections (63.4% and 29.4%, respectively), followed by fungal infiltrates (24.5%). Large nodules were most common in patients with fungal pneumonia, having been seen in 38 (54%) of the 70 patients with fungal pneumonia, 22 (10%) of 220 with bacterial pneumonia (p=0.0059) and 6 (8%) of 78 with viral pneumonia (p=0.0011). The halo sign was also more frequent in patients with fungal pneumonia, having been seen in 38 (54%) of the 70 patients with fungal pneumonia, 17 (8%) of 220 with bacterial pneumonia (p=0.0026) and 7 (9%) of 78 with viral pneumonia (p=0.0015). There was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of the other HRCT patterns including air-space consolidation, ground-glass attenuation and small nodules among bacterial, viral and fungal infections (all p>0.05). CONCLUSION The presence of large nodules with the halo sign is most suggestive of fungal infection after OLT. Other HRCT patterns are not helpful in distinguishing among the various types of infection seen in liver transplant recipients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Wildtype p53 and Smad4 are important suppressor genes in tumor genesis and development. The mutation in p53 gene is closely related to the early formation of breast cancer. In this research, we try to explore the status of Smad4 in breast cancer cell line MCF7 after knocking down p53. MATERIALS AND METHODS MCF-7 was bought from American Type Culture Collection (ATCC). Cells were cultured in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) in incubator containing 5% CO2 at 37°C. In this study we apply to analytical methods such as growth ratio analysis in vitro, immunoblot analysis, flow cytometry for cell cycle analysis, RNA extraction and Real-Time PCR and data analysis. RESULTS The results indicated that specific down regulating of p53 can significantly increase the expression of Smad4 in cancer cell line MCF7 and promote cell apoptosis. In MCF7 cell line p53 gene is negatively related to Smad4 in great extent. CONCLUSIONS In our study, we detect the expression and function of Smad4 by suppressing p53 expression in MCF7, trying to figure out the relationship and signaling pathway between them. In this study, we try to found the affection of p53 on Smad4, so as to induce apoptosis in tumor cell, achieving the goal of targeted cancer prevention and treatment.

Abstract
AIM To obtain information about the impact of oral health status on the quality of life in older adults in Central China, and furthermore, to investigate the influence of various demographic and socio-economic factors on oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL). METHODS This study comprised a stratified random sample of 1,000 older adults in Central China. Questionnaires including demographic factors, education and income level, denture wearing status and Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP)-14 were used in a face-to-face interview. RESULTS Of the study population 82% stated that they had some forms of problems related to their quality of life. The mean value of the simple count and single summary item scores for OHIP-14 were 0.47 (sd 0.50) and 6.83 (sd 6.84) respectively for the entire study population. "Uncomfortable to eat" and "taste worse" were the two most common problems reported using the simple count method for OHIP-14, while the "physical pain" being the highest scored domain of the measure. When the effect of all independent variables was analysed in multivariate analysis, education level and denture wearing status were significantly (p < 0.05) associated with the OHRQoL measure. CONCLUSIONS In this Chinese older adult sample, education level and denture wearing status were related to having oral problems as estimated using the OHIP-14.

Abstract
Objective: To study the development of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in the past 8 years and to come up with predictions and recommendations for the future in China. Methods: Domestic hospitals performing cardiovascular operations were supplied with questionnaires, annually (between 2003 and 2008), upon the number of on-pump and off-pump cardiovascular operations, oxygenators of different types and the number of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). All the hospitals in this study were divided into 8 grades, according to the number of cardiovascular operations. The market share of hospitals in each grade was analyzed. Results: The total anumber of cardiovascular operations was 170,547 in 2010, of which 136,753 were performed under CPB. The ratio of imported membrane oxygenators increased from 43.22% in 2003 to 59.75% in 2010, while bubble oxygenator composition decreased from 43.78% in 2003 to 14.59% in 2010. Forty-four hospitals carried out 206 cases of ECMO in 2010. There were 32 hospitals that performed cardiovascular operations of over 1,000 cases and their market share was 43%. There were 255 hospitals that performed cardiovascular operations in less than 50 cases and their market share was only 3%. Conclusions: CPB in China has gone through a rapid development in the past eight years. Medical resources for CPB should be concentrated and systematic training regulations should be established in the future.

Abstract
Current therapies for metastatic lymph node (LN) are a major burden on health-care systems. Alternative such as percutaneous chemoablation using interstitial injection of ethanol or ethanol-ethiodol-drug(s) mixture (EEM) has been successfully applied to solid tumor ablation of the liver, adrenal glands, lymph nodes and others. However, EEM chemoablation efficacy on two most frequent clinical lymph node presentation, isolated or confluent, has not yet been determined. This study was designed to compare the therapeutic effects of CT-guided percutaneous EEM injection (PEEMI) on patients presenting with single or multiple confluent metastatic LN localizations from various carcinoma. Thirty six patients with metastatic LN carcinoma at various anatomical regions were enrolled from 2009 to 2010 over a nine month period. They were separated into two groups: group A includes 24 single isolated metastatic lymph nodes and group B includes 12 multiple and confluent nodes. The primary end point was the ablative efficacy of PEEMI. The intratumoral (IT) EEM distribution and the occurrence of reflux were recorded. Adjuvant systemic chemotherapy was administered after the procedure. Contrast-enhanced CT scans were performed during procedure and follow-up. Six patients were tested for Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) fixation before and after the procedure. For group A the EEM IT distribution-to-tumor ratio was 100% vs. 50% to 80% for group B (t = 11.5, p < 0.05). The reflux frequency was 80% for group A versus 30% for group B. For group A, a complete response (CR) rates of 45.8%, 70.8%, 91.7% and a partial response (PR) rates of 54.2%, 29.2%, 8.3% were obtained at 3, 6 and 12 months after therapy. Regarding group B, a CR rate of 0%, 0%, 0% and PR rate of 16.7%, 50%, 58.3% were observed at similar period of time. Standardized rate by direct method was performed and the CR rate (74.5%) for group A was higher than for group B. The tumor FDG uptake was lower 6 months after PEEMII compared with the preoperative images. Five patients presenting with concomitant lung metastasis, had a good local response-node size reduction on postoperative CT scanning, but no response on lung nodules that were progressing. No serious adverse events were observed. A few patients had mild pain during the procedure, which resolved with peritumor injection of local anesthetic. No needle tract seeding or infection occurred. CT-guided PEEMI treatment is a simple, fast and predictable procedure that has better effectiveness on single, well circumscribed metastatic lymph node than on multiple and confluent ones. Technical improvements are expected to bring better results on large nodes that should be confirmed on larger group of patients.

Abstract
We have used the Linac Coherent Light Source to generate solid-density aluminum plasmas at temperatures of up to 180 eV. By varying the photon energy of the x rays that both create and probe the plasma, and observing the K-α fluorescence, we can directly measure the position of the K edge of the highly charged ions within the system. The results are found to disagree with the predictions of the extensively used Stewart-Pyatt model, but are consistent with the earlier model of Ecker and Kröll, which predicts significantly greater depression of the ionization potential.

Abstract
Increased understanding of prostate cancer biology has led to new treatment strategies and promising new agents for treating prostate cancer, in particular peptide-based agonists and antagonists. In this review article, new therapy modalities and potential approaches for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer are discussed, including agonists and antagonists of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone, antagonists of bombesin/gastrin-releasing peptide, and growth hormone-releasing hormone and somatostatin analogues. Though the prognosis of patients with prostate cancer is much improved by some of these treatment approaches, including combination treatment methods, extensive side-effects are still reported. These include sexual dysfunction, functional lesions of the liver and renal system, osteoporosis, anaemia and diarrhoea. Future studies should focus on new treatment agents and treatment approaches that can eliminate side-effects and improve quality of life in patients with prostate cancer on the basis of potent treatment efficacy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In patients with carotid stenosis or occlusion, cerebral blood could be supplied through collateral pathways to improve regional blood flow and protect against ischemic events. The contribution of collaterals from the ICA can be assessed by depiction of vascular perfusion territories with ASL. However, so far there is no method available to evaluate the collateral perfusion territory from the ECA in MR imaging. In this study, we present a new labeling scheme based on VE-ASL to quantitatively assess the perfusion territory of the ECA. MATERIALS AND METHODS A new labeling approach with a Hadamard encoding scheme was developed to label major arteries, especially the ECA. Twelve healthy subjects with normal cerebrovascular anatomy were examined to demonstrate their perfusion territories. Eight patients with carotid artery stenosis or occlusion were assessed before and after surgery to show changes of their collateral blood supply. RESULTS The proposed method enables assessment of the perfusion territories of the ECA. Good agreement was found between the vascular territories and normal cerebrovascular anatomy in healthy subjects. For the patients with carotid stenosis or occlusion, our noninvasive results provided information on collateral flow comparable with that from DSA. Their collateral flows from the ECA, moreover, could be quantitatively estimated pre- and postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS The modified approach has been validated by the consistency of collateral perfusion territories with cerebrovascular anatomy, and quantitative assessment of collaterals proved useful for assisting in evaluating therapeutic interventions.
