Abstract
Slack (Slo 2.2), a member of the Slo potassium channel family, is activated by both voltage and cytosolic factors, such as Na(+) ([Na(+)](i)) and Cl(-) ([Cl(-)](i)). Since the Slo family is known to play a role in hypoxia, and since hypoxia/ischemia is associated with an increase in H(+) and CO(2) intracellularly, we hypothesized that the Slack channel may be affected by changes in intracellular concentrations of CO(2) and H(+). To examine this, we expressed the Slack channel in Xenopus oocytes and the Slo 2.2 protein was allowed to be inserted into the plasma membrane. Inside-out patch recordings were performed to examine the response of Slack to different CO(2) concentrations (0.038%, 5%, 12%) and to different pH levels (6.3, 6.8, 7.3, 7.8, 8.3). In the presence of low [Na(+)](i) (5 mM), the Slack channel open probability decreased when exposed to decreased pH or increased CO(2) in a dose-dependent fashion (from 0.28+/-0.03, n=3, at pH 7.3 to 0.006+/-0.005, n=3, P=0.0004, at pH 6.8; and from 0.65+/-0.17, n=3, at 0.038% CO(2) to 0.22+/-0.07, n=3, P=0.04 at 12% CO(2)). In the presence of high [Na(+)](i) (45 mM), Slack open probability increased (from 0.03+/-0.01 at 5 mM [Na(+)](i), n=3, to 0.11+/-0.01, n=3, P=0.01) even in the presence of decreased pH (6.3). Since Slack activity increases significantly when exposed to increased [Na(+)](i), even in presence of increased H(+), we propose that Slack may play an important role in pathological conditions during which there is an increase in the intracellular concentrations of both acid and Na(+), such as in ischemia/hypoxia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bell's palsy or idiopathic facial palsy is an acute facial paralysis due to inflammation of the facial nerve. A number of studies published in China have suggested acupuncture is beneficial for facial palsy. OBJECTIVES The objective of this review was to examine the efficacy of acupuncture in hastening recovery and reducing long-term morbidity from Bell's palsy. SEARCH STRATEGY We searched the Cochrane Neuromuscular Disease Group Trials Register, MEDLINE (January 1966 to April 2006), EMBASE (January 1980 to April 2006), LILACS (from January 1982 to April 2006) and the Chinese Biomedical Retrieval System (January 1978 to April 2006) for randomised controlled trials using 'Bell's palsy' and its synonyms, 'idiopathic facial paralysis' or 'facial palsy' as well as search terms including 'acupuncture'. Chinese journals in which we thought we might find randomised controlled trials or controlled clinical trials relevant to our study were handsearched. We reviewed the bibliographies of the randomised trials and contacted the authors and known experts in the field to identify additional published or unpublished data. SELECTION CRITERIA We included all randomised or quasi-randomised controlled trials involving acupuncture in the treatment of Bell's palsy irrespective of any language restrictions. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors identified potential articles from the literature search and extracted data independently using a data extraction form. The assessment of methodological quality included allocation concealment, patient blinding, differences at baseline of the experimental groups and completeness of follow-up. Two review authors assessed quality independently. All disagreements were resolved by discussion between the review authors. MAIN RESULTS Six studies including a total of 537 participants met the inclusion criteria. Five of them used acupuncture while another one used acupuncture combined with drugs. No trials reported on the outcomes specified for this review. Harmful side effects were not reported in any of the trials. Flaws in study design or reporting (particularly uncertain allocation concealment and substantial loss to follow-up) and clinical differences between trials prevented conclusions about the efficacy of acupuncture. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS The quality of the included trials was inadequate to allow any conclusion about the efficacy of acupuncture. More research with high quality trials is needed.

Abstract
In this study, we examined the effect of arachidonic acid (AA) on the BK α-subunit with or without β-subunits expressed in Xenopus oocytes. In excised patches, AA potentiated the hSlo-α current and slowed inactivation only when β2/3 subunit was co-expressed. The β2-subunit–dependent modulation by AA persisted in the presence of either superoxide dismutase or inhibitors of AA metabolism such as nordihydroguaiaretic acid and eicosatetraynoic acid, suggesting that AA acts directly rather than through its metabolites. Other cis unsaturated fatty acids (docosahexaenoic and oleic acid) also enhanced hSlo-α + β2 currents and slowed inactivation, whereas saturated fatty acids (palmitic, stearic, and caprylic acid) were without effect. Pretreatment with trypsin to remove the cytosolic inactivation domain largely occluded AA action. Intracellularly applied free synthetic β2-ball peptide induced inactivation of the hSlo-α current, and AA failed to enhance this current and slow the inactivation. These results suggest that AA removes inactivation by interacting, possibly through conformational changes, with β2 to prevent the inactivation ball from reaching its receptor. Our data reveal a novel mechanism of β-subunit–dependent modulation of BK channels by AA. In freshly dissociated mouse neocortical neurons, AA eliminated a transient component of whole cell K+currents. BK channel inactivation may be a specific mechanism by which AA and other unsaturated fatty acids influence neuronal death/survival in neuropathological conditions.

Abstract
Immunohistochemical analyses on local distributions of serum proteins in living mouse kidneys are usually difficult to examine with conventional preparation methods. By using our "in vivo cryotechnique" combined with freeze-substitution, we have checked immunolocalizations of the serum proteins in nephrons of bovine serum albumin (BSA)-overload mice, and compared them with those obtained by the conventional preparation methods. In two days of daily BSA-injected mice, the immunolocalization of BSA could be observed in Bowman's space and urinary tubules with their overt proteinuria, where another endogenous mouse albumin was similarly immunolocalized. The leakage of BSA and mouse albumin in Bowman's space and their reabsorption into proximal tubules were detected in 55% of nephrons, where no leakage of immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1) was detected. However, the leakage of IgG1, in addition to BSA and mouse albumin, was detected in the other nephrons. By carefully examining immunolocalizations of BSA and IgG1, they were obviously different from those obtained by the conventional preparation methods without normal blood circulation into the kidneys. The immunolocalizations of both BSA and mouse serum proteins could be directly analyzed with the "in vivo cryotechnique", suggesting that functional damage to glomerular filtration barriers are different at early stages of the BSA-overload mouse model, depending on each nephron of living mice.

Abstract
Prokaryotes have complex mechanisms to regulate their gene transcription, through the action of transcription factors (TFs). This review deals with current strategies, approaches and challenges in the understanding of i) how to map the repertoires of TF and operon on a genome, ii) how to identify the specific cis-acting DNA elements and their DNA-binding TFs that are required for expression of a given gene, iii) how to define the regulon members of a given TF, iv) how a given TF interacts with its target promoters, v) how these TF-promoter DNA interactions constitute regulatory networks, and vi) how transcriptional regulatory networks can be reconstructed by the reverse-engineering methods. Our goal is to depict the power of newly developed genomic techniques and computational tools, alone or in combination, to dissect the genetic circuitry of transcription regulation, and how this has the tremendous potential to model the regulatory networks in the prokaryotic cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tobacco use is prevalent among adolescents in China in general, however, little is known about tobacco use among students in private schools with an enrollment of 1.5 million. METHOD In 2001, cross-sectional survey data from 2725 students in grades seven and eight (1307 sampled from private schools and 1418 sampled from public schools) were included. Smoking measures (risk of susceptibility to smoking, smoking onset, ever smoking, smoking in the past 7 days and past 30 days, established smoking) were compared between private and public school students using chi-square test, logistic regression, and survival analysis. RESULTS Cigarette smoking was more prevalent among private school students than among public school students (private vs. public: 21.9% vs. 12.3% for susceptibility to smoking, 53.9% vs. 38.2% for ever smoking, 22% vs. 12.0% for 30-day smoking, 15.9% vs. 4.0% for 7-day smoking, 4.5% vs. 1.2% for established smoking). Students in private schools are 3.4 to 3.8 times more likely to smoke than students in public schools after the adjustment of important covariates (gender, grade, peer smoking, parental smoking, and parents' occupation). Risk of smoking onset by age was also greater for private school students than for public school students. CONCLUSIONS Being in private schools was associated with three to four times increases in the likelihood of current cigarette smoking and heightened risk of smoking onset by age. Findings from this study suggest the urgent need to collect additional data on risk and protective factors as well as the willingness to participate in effective tobacco use intervention prevention among private school students.

Abstract
Well characterised novel catalysts consisting of TiO2 modified with very small amounts of gold nanoparticles have been applied to the photocatalytic degradation of two important pollutants, methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and 4-chlorophenol, in dilute aqueous solution using a fixed bed flow-through photocatalytic reactor. Although the thermal processing that was necessary for coating the reactor walls with the photocatalysts did lead to some loss of performance, the net gains in activity relative to unmodified TiO2 were nevertheless substantial and in excess of anything previously reported. Improvements in reaction rate by 50% and 100% for the removal of 4-chlorophenol and MTBE, respectively, were achieved. It was also found that effective removal of both pollutants could be achieved at water flow rates that are relevant to field applications involving the photocatalytic clean-up of contaminated groundwater. Due to their very small Au content, the cost of these materials is compatible with large scale use.

Abstract
The synthesis of docosahexaenoic (DHA, 22:6n-3) and Osbond acid (OA, 22:5n-6) is regulated by the heterodimer of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor and retinoid X receptor (RXR). 9-Cis retinoic acid, a metabolite of vitamin A, is the most potent ligand of RXR. We tested whether vitamin A deficiency impairs DHA and OA synthesis in rats fed a vitamin A- and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)-sufficient (VASALAS), vitamin A-sufficient and ALA-deficient (VASALAD), vitamin A-deficient and ALA-sufficient (VADALAS), or vitamin A- and ALA-deficient (VADALAD) diet. After 7 wk of feeding, liver and colon choline (CPG) and ethanolamine (EPG) phosphoglyceride FA were analyzed. The VADALAS compared with the VASALAS rats had elevated levels of both DHA (P< 0.05) and OA (P < 0.005) in liver CPG and EPG. In contrast, the VADALAD group had a lower DHA (P < 0.01) and higher OA (P < 0.005) level in CPG and EPG of both tissues than their VASALAD counterparts. ALA deficiency reduced DHA and enhariced OA levels in liver and colon CPG and EPG in both the vitamin A-sufficient (VASALAS vs. VASALAD) and -deficient (VADALAS vs. VADALAD) rats (P < 0.005). The study demonstrates that ALA deficiency reduced DHA and enhanced OA levels in tissue membranes, and dietary vitamin A deficiency has a profound effect on membrane DHA and OA in rat tissues. Both vitamin A and DHA are involved in a myriad of vital physiological functions pertaining to growth and development and health. Hence, there is a need for a further study to unravel the mechanism by which vitamin A influences membrane DHA and OA.

Abstract
The laboratory of Microbiology at SCK.CEN, in collaboration with different universities, participates in several ESA programmes with bacterial experiments that are carried out in the International Space Station (ISS). The main objective of these programmes is to study the effects of space flight conditions such as microgravity and cosmic radiation on the general behaviour of model bacteria. To measure the radiation doses received by the bacteria, different detectors accompanied the microbiological experiments. The results obtained during two space flight missions are discussed. This dosimetry experiment was a collaboration between different institutes so that the doses could be estimated by different techniques. For measurement of the high linear energy transfer (LET) doses (>10 keV microm(-1)), two types of etched track detectors were used. The low LET part of the spectrum was measured by three types of thermoluminescent detectors ((7)LiF:Mg,Ti; (7)LiF:Mg,Cu,P; Al(2)O(3):C) and by the optically stimulated luminescence technique using Al(2)O(3):C detectors.
