Abstract
In this Letter, we demonstrate a nonlinear-mirror (NLM) mode-locked diode-pumped solid-state Nd:YVO4 laser operating at 1342 nm, in which the NLM comprises a periodically poled LiNbO3 crystal and a dichroic mirror. The self-starting threshold for cw mode locking is 1.5 W, which is significantly lower than that of saturable absorber mode locking. An average power of 1.52 W at 1342 nm is obtained under diode pump power of 10 W at 808 nm, with the slope efficiency being up to 16.8%. The pulse width and the repetition rate of the mode-locked laser output are about 9.5 ps and 101 MHz, respectively.

Abstract
ABSTRACTWe are reporting the first quantitative photoresponse characteristics of boron doped hot-filament CVD (HFCVD) diamond based Schottky diodes using semi-transparent aluminum contacts in the spectral range of 300–1050 nm. Quantum efficiencies, obtained without correction for surface reflection in the visible and near UV region, were between 5 % and 10% when the diodes were unbiased. Effect of reverse bias on the photoresponse was investigated at selected photon energies. Reverse biased diodes exhibit increasing photoresponse and ultimately saturation. Quantum efficiency as high as 30% was also obtained at 500 nm, when a reverse bias of over I volt was applied. The photoresponse mechanism of CVD diamond Schottky diodes is also discussed. A Schottky barrier height of 1.15 ± 0.02 eV for Al-HFCVD diamond contacts was determined using the d.c. photoelectric method.

Abstract
With a sample of (225.2±2.8)×10(6) J/ψ events registered in the BESIII detector, J/ψ→γπ(+)π(-)η(') is studied using two η(') decay modes: η(')→π(+)π(-)η and η(')→γρ(0). The X(1835), which was previously observed by BESII, is confirmed with a statistical significance that is larger than 20σ. In addition, in the π(+)π(-)η(') invariant-mass spectrum, the X(2120) and the X(2370), are observed with statistical significances larger than 7.2σ and 6.4σ, respectively. For the X(1835), the angular distribution of the radiative photon is consistent with expectations for a pseudoscalar.

Ginsenoside Rd attenuates mitochondrial dysfunction and sequential apoptosis after transient focal ischemia. Neuroscience 2011; 178:169-80. Abstract
We previously found that ginsenoside Rd (Rd), one of the major active ingredients in Panax ginseng, protects neuronal cells from hydrogen peroxide and oxygen-glucose deprivation, an in vitro model of cerebral ischemia. In this study, we examined the protective effects of Rd in an animal model of focal cerebral ischemia. Rats administered with Rd or vehicle were subjected to transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Rd (50 mg/kg) significantly reduced the infarct volume by 52.8%. This reduction of injury volume was associated with an improvement in neurological function and was sustained for at least 2 weeks after the induction of ischemia. To evaluate the underlying mechanisms of Rd against stroke, brain tissues were assayed for mitochondrial enzyme activities, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), energy metabolites, and apoptosis. Rd markedly protected mitochondria as indicated by preserved respiratory chain complex activities and aconitase activity, lowered mitochondrial hydrogen peroxide production, and hyperpolarized MMP. Microdialysis results illustrated that Rd significantly decreased the accumulation of lactate, the end product of anaerobic glycolysis, and increased pyruvate, the end product of aerobic glycolysis, hence inducing a lower lactate/pyruvate ratio. Additionally, in vitro studies further exhibited that Rd protected isolated mitochondria from calcium-induced damage by attenuating mitochondrial swelling, preserving MMP and decreasing ROS production. Moreover, Rd treatment reduced mitochondrial release of cytochrome c (CytoC) and apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF), thereby minimizing mitochondria-mediated apoptosis following ischemia. In conclusion, these findings demonstrated that Rd exerts neuroprotective effects in transient focal ischemia, which may involve an integrated process of the mitochondrial protection, energy restoration and inhibition of apoptosis.

Abstract
We propose a universal and practical scheme to realize polarization-free second-order nonlinear frequency-conversion processes, including sum-frequency generation, difference-frequency generation, and optical parametric amplification. This scheme is based on the optical superlattice with a noncritical phase-matching condition, which is suitable for optical integration. A chirped dual-period structure is proposed to ensure the efficiency and stability of the conversions.

Abstract
The decays ψ'→γπ(0), γη and γη' are studied using data collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII e(+)e(-) collider. The processes ψ'→γπ(0) and ψ'→γη are observed for the first time with signal significances of 4.6σ and 4.3σ, respectively. The branching fractions are determined to be B(ψ'→γπ(0))=(1.58±0.40±0.13)×10(-6), B(ψ'→γη)=(1.38±0.48±0.09)×10(-6), and B(ψ'→γη')=(126±3±8)×10(-6), where the first errors are statistical and the second ones systematic.

Abstract
Abstract
Background and objectives: Analysis of gene expression has identified various molecular subtypes. These molecular subtypes defined by immunohistochemistry expression of estrogen receptor (ER) or progesterone receptor (PR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (Her2) : luminal A, luminal B, basal cell-like and HER2-expresing. This study evaluates clinical and pathologic features and survival of the four molecular subtypes in premenopausal and postmenopausal women from northeast China.
Methods: A retrospective analysis of 1214 women diagnosed with breast cancer from 2000 to 2007 in Breast Surgery Department, First Hospital of Jilin University. Four molecular breast cancer subtypes defined as: luminal A (ER+ and/or PR+, HER2-), luminal B (ER+ and/or PR+, HER2+), basal-like (ER-, PR-, HER2-), and HER2-expresing, (ER-, PR-, and HER2+). We examined the prevalence of breast cancer subtypes and analyzed the associations with patient clinicopathologic features: age, menopausal status, tumor size, lymph node status, stage of cancer at diagnosis, histological characteristics, and breast cancer-specific survival.
Results: Among the all cases, the luminal A subtype was the most prevalent in our study sample (56.0%) compared with basal -like (18.5%), luminal B (13.7%), and HER2-expresing subtypes (11.8%). The four molecular subtypes differed significantly by menopausal status (P=0.011), age (P<0.001) and lymph node status (P<0.001). Luminal A subtype was more likely to with Stage II breast cancer (P<0.001) and most present with size of 2.1-5 cm (P<0.001). The luminal B and the HER2-expresing subtypes presented an increased association with more aggressive clinical course when compared with others subtypes. The estimated median follow-up period for all subjects was 54 months (range, 1 month to 120 months). The 8-year overall survival for all patients was 81.3% (95%CI, 79.4-83.7) and disease-free survival was 77.8% (95% CI, 75.4-79.9). The Kaplan-Meier curve showed breast cancer-specific survival differed significantly among the molecular subtypes (P < 0.03), with the luminal B and HER2-expresing subtypes having the poorest outcome.
Conclusion: Luminal A breast tumor appeared the better outcome than the others three subtypes and the shortest survival was HER2-expresing subtype. The poor clinical outcomes of luminal B subtype with women from northeast China were different from those of Western women could contribute to the poor prognosis of breast cancer observed in this cohort of patients and some of them couldn't accept molecular targeted therapy with trastuzumab by poor economic situations.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women (192,370 new cases in 2009) and the second leading cause of cancer death (40,000) among women in USA. Current multimodality treatment of breast cancer is based on the level of ER expression and Her 2 gene amplification. However, no effective treatment is currently available for breast cancers with low level expression of ER and no amplification of Her 2 gene. The aim of this study is to identify protein pathways activated in the breast cancer with negative expression of ER and Her 2. Method: Protein Pathway Array was used to assess the level of protein expression and phosphorylation in 71 paired fresh frozen breast samples (tumor and adjacent benign tissue). A total 159 antibodies were evaluated which represent most important signal transduction pathways involved in proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, invasion and metastasis. Several potential therapeutic kinase proteins were also assessed. Results: A total 20 proteins (PCNA, phospho-PTEN, cyclin B1 cyclin E1, CDK6, E-cadherin, NFkB, ect) were differentially expressed between normal and tumor tissues based on the statistical analysis. In Her 2 negative tumors (n=37), 3 proteins were differentially expressed and among them, 2 were up-regulated (CDK6 and HSD1) and 1 was down-regulated (IGF). In ER negative tumors (n=18), 4 proteins (HSD, SK, TDP and Slug) was up-regulated and 1 proteins were down-regulated (E-cadherin). In triple negative tumors (n=13), one protein (E-cadherin) down-regulated and 2 proteins (TDP and HSD) were up-regulated. Furthermore, based on the expression pattern of these proteins, tumors negative for both ER and Her 2 (n=15) can be clustered into 3 groups
Figure 1: Subclassification of breast cancers negative for ER and Her-2 based protein pattern.
Hierarchical clustering analysis of 20 differentially expressed proteins in
15 ER/Her-2 negative breast cancers. The cancers can be separated into 3 subtypes. Red indicates overexpression, green underexpression, black no change, and gray no expression. Each column represents a protein. Each row represents a sample.
Conclusion: Our study showed that distinct sets of signaling pathways activated in ER and Her 2 negative breast cancers. The increased expression of cell cycle progression proteins in Her 2 negative tumors suggests activation of cell proliferation via different growth promotion pathway. Similarly, different cell proliferation pathways are also activated in ER negative tumors. This finding may be used to design future clinical trial based on the activation of different signaling pathways.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine levels of support for comprehensive smoke-free policies in six large Chinese cities. METHODS Data from Wave 1 of the International Tobacco Control (ITC) China Survey (April-August 2006) were analysed. The ITC China Survey employed a multistage sampling design in Beijing, Shenyang, Shanghai, Changsha, Guangzhou and Yinchuan (none of which has comprehensive smoke-free policies in place). Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 4815 smokers and 1270 non-smokers. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with support for comprehensive smoke-free policies. RESULTS About one in two Chinese urban smokers and four in five non-smokers believed that secondhand smoke (SHS) causes lung cancer. The majority of respondents supported comprehensive smoke-free policies in hospitals, schools and public transport vehicles while support for smoke-free workplaces, restaurants and bars was lower. Levels of support were generally comparable between smokers and non-smokers. Support for comprehensive smoke-free policies was positively associated with knowledge about the harm of SHS. Respondents who worked in a smoke-free worksite or who frequented smoke-free indoor entertainment places were more likely to support comprehensive smoking restriction in bars and restaurants. CONCLUSION Considerable support for smoke-free policies exists in these six large cities in China. Greater public education about the dangers of SHS may further increase support. Experiencing the benefits of smoke-free indoor entertainment places and/or workplaces increases support for these policies and suggests that some initial smoke-free policy implementation may hasten the diffusion of these public health policies.

Abstract
We investigated the factors related to the radiological outcome of a transtrochanteric curved varus osteotomy in patients with osteonecrosis of the hip. We reviewed 73 hips in 62 patients with a mean follow-up of 12.4 years (5 to 31.1). There were 28 men and 34 women, with a mean age of 33.3 years (15 to 68) at the time of surgery. The 73 hips were divided into two groups according to their radiological findings: group 1 showed progression of collapse and/or joint-space narrowing; group 2 had neither progressive collapse nor joint-space narrowing. Both of these factors and the radiological outcomes were analysed by a stepwise discriminant analysis. A total of 12 hips were categorised as group 1 and 61 as group 2. Both the post-operative intact ratio and the localisation of the necrotic lesion correlated with the radiological outcome. The cut-off point of the postoperative intact ratio to prevent the progression of collapse was 33.6%, and the cut-off point to prevent both the progression of collapse and joint-space narrowing was 41.9%. The results of this study indicate that a post-operative intact ratio of 33.0% is necessary if a satisfactory outcome is to be achieved after this varus osteotomy.

Abstract
We propose in this paper a chirped-quasi-periodic structure using the projection method. This type of new structure combines the advantages of chirped and quasi-periodic structures, and can be used for both multiple quasi-phase-matching and multiple bandwidths control. Numerical simulation of second-harmonic generation performance is in good agreement with the Fourier spectrum of the structure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCT) was carried out to determine the efficacy and safety of capecitabine plus oxaliplatin (CAPOX) or fluorouracil plus oxaliplatin (FUOX) as first-line treatment for metastatic colorectal cancer (MCRC). METHOD A literature search was conducted of the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register Databases, Medline, Embase, ISI databases and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database without exclusion of material published in any language. RCTs conducted between 1998 and 2008 of CAPOX compared with FUOX regimens were considered for inclusion. Statistical analyses were carried out using RevMan software. RESULTS Ten RCTs were included, involving 3208 patients. The meta-analysis showed that there were no statistically significant differences in tumour response rate (RR, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.87-1.01; P = 0.09), progression-free survival (PFS) (RR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.94-1.01; P = 0.19), and overall survival (OS) (RR, 1.02; 95% CI, 0.97-1.07; P = 0.47) between CAPOX and FUOX regimen. However, symptoms of thrombocytopenia and hand-foot syndrome (HFS) were increased in the CAPOX regimen (RR, 1.89; 95% CI, 1.33-2.69; P = 0.0004 and RR, 3.40; 95% CI, 2.25-5.15; P < 0.00001 respectively), while neutropenia and leucopenia occurred more frequently in the FUOX regimen (RR, 0.29; 95% CI, 0.15-0.55; P = 0.0002 and RR, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.18-0.95; P = 0.04 respectively). CONCLUSION CAPOX was equivalent to FUOX in terms of tumour response rate, progression-free survival (PFS), and OS in first-line treatment for patients with MCRC, which may be considered as standard first-line treatment in patients with MCRC.

Abstract
Monoclonal antibody against the CD45RB protein induces stable transplantation tolerance to multiple types of allograft. We have previously established that this tolerance protocol relies on the regulatory function of B lymphocytes for its effect. B lymphocytes have also been reported to participate in immune regulation in several other settings. In most of these systems, the regulatory function of B lymphocytes depends on the production of IL-10. Therefore, we investigated the role of IL-10 in the anti-CD45RB model of B-cell-mediated transplantation tolerance. Surprisingly, using antibody-mediated neutralization of IL-10, IL-10-deficient recipients and adoptive transfer of IL-10-deficient B lymphocytes, we found that IL-10 actually counter-regulates tolerance induced by anti-CD45RB. Furthermore, neutralization of IL-10 reduced the development of chronic allograft vasculopathy compared to anti-CD45RB alone and reduced the production of graft reactive alloantibodies. These data suggest that the participation of regulatory B lymphocytes in transplantation tolerance may be distinct from how they operate in other systems. Identifying the specific B lymphocytes that mediate transplantation tolerance and defining their mechanism of action may yield new insights into the complex cellular network through which antigen-specific tolerance is established and maintained.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to investigate the psychological status and the psychosocial experiences of HIV-positive people using Symptom Check List 90 (SCL-90) in eastern China. METHODS Two hundred and fourteen HIV-positive people and 200 controls were recruited to the study. Participants were given an anonymous questionnaire which included questions pertaining to demography, SCL-90 and psychosocial experiences. RESULTS The mean subscale scores for SCL-90 in the HIV-positive group were all higher than those of the control group (P<0.001), especially for depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and hostility. Female HIV-positive individuals had significantly higher depression and anxiety scores (P<0.05) and more scores higher than 2.0 than male HIV-positive individuals. The average number of subscales with mean scores higher than 2.0 was 4.1 for female HIV-positive individuals and 3.7 for male HIV-positive individuals. The most common psychosocial experiences related to HIV infection were fear (36.9%) and helplessness (31.8%). 90.2% of HIV-positive people would not tell others about their disease because of fear of discrimination against family members (42.2%), exclusion by community members (26.9%) and abandonment (23.3%). Discrimination from acquaintances (38.8%) was a main stressor in the HIV-positive individuals' daily life. Most members of HIV-positive individuals' communities expressed negative attitudes: alienation, coldness, aversion and fear. 38.3% of the HIV-positive participants reported that their family members had been discriminated against. CONCLUSIONS The results demonstrate that HIV-positive people in eastern China live in a negative psychosocial environment and suffer from psychological distress. It is necessary to provide psychological interventions for people living with AIDS and to educate community members in order to improve the psychosocial environment.

Abstract
The clinical characteristics and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytological features of 34 hospitalized patients with leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (LC) were studied. Most patients presented with signs of meningeal irritation (19 cases) and intra-cranial hypertension (23 cases). Computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed brain parenchymal lesions, hydrocephalus and leptomeningeal enhancement (nine, six and eight cases, respectively). The CSF changes included high opening pressure (21 cases), increased white blood cell count (23 cases), elevated protein levels (25 cases) and low glucose levels (17 cases). Malignant cells were found in all CSF specimens and 32 cases had malignant cells in their initial CSF examinations. High serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) occurred in 11 patients. Signs of meningeal irritation and intra-cranial hypertension were common. It is concluded that serum CEA measurement along with CT and MRI scanning are helpful in the diagnosis of LC. Crucially, however, CSF cytology could be the most important technique for the diagnosis of LC.

Abstract
It is often difficult to distinguish myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) from aplastic anemia (AA) because of the considerable clinical, cytologic histologic similarities between these two disorders; however, distinguishing between AA and MDS is of great importance because there is a higher risk of progression to acute leukemia in patients with MDS compared with AA. Up to now, CD34(+) cells in MDS and AA patients have been studied extensively; however, little information is available on myeloid granulocytes. The aim of this study was to determine whether immunophenotype of myeloid granulocytes in AA patients was different from that of MDS. Flow cytometry was used to assess the immunophenotype of myeloid granulocytes in 22 patients with MDS, 12 with AA, and 10 normal subjects. Our data showed that the percentages of CD13(+) granulocytes, CD33(+) granulocytes, CD34(+) granulocytes, and HLA-DR(+) granulocytes were significantly higher in patients with MDS than in AA patients and normal subjects (P < 0.05). The percentages of CD15(+) granulocytes and CD10(+) granulocytes were significantly lower in patients with MDS than in AA patients and normal subjects (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in the expression of these markers between patients with AA and normal subjects (P > 0.05). As refractory anemia progressing to refractory anemia with excess blasts, the percentages of CD13(+) granulocytes, CD33(+) granulocytes, CD34(+) granulocytes and HLA-DR(+) granulocytes were significantly increased, whereas, the percentage of CD15(+) granulocytes was significantly decreased (P < 0.05). These data suggest that immunophenotype of myeloid granulocytes may be a useful parameter for the differential diagnosis of MDS and AA.

The role of urinary soluble endoglin in the diagnosis of pre-eclampsia: comparison with soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 to placental growth factor ratio. BJOG 2009; 117:321-30. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Endoglin, an anti-angiogenic glycoprotein expressed on endothelial cells, has been proposed recently as a biomarker of pre-eclampsia (PE). Given that PE is characterised by an imbalance of angiogenic factors, we sought to determine the clinical utility of urinary soluble endoglin, relative to the soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 to placental growth factor (PlGF) ratio, in the diagnosis of PE during gestation. DESIGN Prospective observational cohort. SETTING Tertiary referral university hospital. POPULATION Two hundred and thirty-four pregnant women were enrolled prospectively in the following groups: healthy controls, n = 63; gestational age (GA), median (interquartile range), 33 weeks (27-39 weeks); chronic hypertension, n = 27; GA, 33 weeks (30-36 weeks); mild PE, n = 38; GA, 37 weeks (34-40 weeks); severe PE, n = 106; GA, 32 weeks (29-37 weeks). METHODS Free urinary levels of soluble endoglin, soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 and PlGF were measured by sensitive and specific immunoassay. Levels for all urinary analytes were normalised to creatinine. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Urinary soluble endoglin, and the soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 to PlGF ratio. RESULTS In healthy controls, urinary soluble endoglin levels were increased significantly at term relative to those earlier in gestation. Severe PE was characterised by an increased urinary level of soluble endoglin, soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1, protein to creatinine ratio and soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 to PlGF ratio compared with all other groups. There was a direct correlation between urinary soluble endoglin and proteinuria that remained after GA correction (R = 0.382, P < 0.001). Urinary soluble endoglin could not differentiate mild PE from severe preterm PE. Overall, soluble endoglin had the ability to discriminate PE from chronic hypertension and healthy controls only in women who were evaluated at <37 weeks of GA. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of urinary soluble endoglin alone in the diagnosis of PE or in the identification of women with PE requiring a mandated delivery before 37 weeks of gestation were 70%, 86% and 76%, respectively. These values were inferior to those of the soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 to PlGF ratio (P < 0.001). The addition of urinary soluble endoglin did not improve the diagnostic accuracy of the soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 to PlGF ratio alone. CONCLUSIONS We have provided evidence that soluble endoglin is present and elevated in the urine of women who develop preterm PE. Urinary soluble endoglin has only limited ability to determine the severity of PE and to distinguish between PE and chronic hypertension both preterm and at term. Compared with urinary soluble endoglin, the soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 to PlGF ratio remains a better marker of disease presence, severity and outcome.

Abstract
AIMS To produce single cell protein (SCP) by using waste capsicum powder produced during capsanthin extraction as a substrate. METHODS AND RESULTS The extraction [CPM (capsicum powder medium)] from waste capsicum powder was used as culture medium to cultivate four yeast strains. The main composition of CPM was determined. The average concentration of total sugar, total nitrogen and phosphorous of CPM were 16.3, 3.7 g l(-1) and 785.4 mg l(-1), respectively. Four yeast strains were cultured in two CPMs, and the cell mass, protein content of cells and specific growth rate of cells were determined. Addition of corn steep liquor significantly increased the cell mass production. Presence of capsaicin in CPM did not show inhibition of cell growth of yeast tested. CONCLUSIONS CPM contained sufficient nutrients and could be used as a good medium to produce SCP. Candida utilis 1769 was chosen as the biomass producer because of its highest SCP formation (6.8 g l(-1)) and higher specific growth rate (0.12 h(-1)). The amino acid composition of its protein was well balanced. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Utilization of waste capsicum powder can reduce environmental pollution and increase protein supply for animal feed.
