Abstract
In the last few decades, anti-negative pressure facility (ANPF) has been emerged as a revolutionary approach for sloving the pollution in the Second Water Supply System (SWSS) in China. This study analyzed implications of the safety in SWSS with ANPF, utilizing the water distribution network hydraulic model. A method of hydraulic simulation and security assessment was presented which was able to reflect the number and location of nodes that can be installed in ANPF. Benchmark results through two instance networks showed that 67% and 89% of nodes in each network did not fit the ANPFs for installation. The simple and pratical algorithm was recommended in the water distribution network design and planing in order to increase the security of SWSS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish a stable animal model for studying the effect of traumatic brain injury on bone fracture healing. METHODS Eighty adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into fracture combined brain injury group (A) and simple fracture group (B). Animals of the two groups were killed 6 hours, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month and 2 months after trauma, respectively. Their brain histopathology changes were observed and neurological severity scores (NSS, 0 through 25 from no injury to severe injury) determined to measure the brain injury after head trauma, and fracture-healing was assessed by measuring callus volume and X ray examination at the scheduled time points after trauma. The callus volumes were compared between the groups using independent-samples t test 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month and 2 months after trauma respectively. A value of P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS Ninety percent of the rats of group A presented with hemiplegia and the mortality rate was 10% (4/40) . The survived rats developed decorticated flexion deformity of the forelimbs, with behavioral depression, and lost some reflexes and muscle tone. The NSS were 10.83±1.94, 9.33±0.82, 8.17±1.17, 7.83±0.75 and 8.07±0.82 with 6 hours, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month and 2 months after trauma, respectively. It showed that the animals received moderate head injury, which tended to be stable from 2 weeks after trauma. Brain pathology showed that blood brain barrier was destroyed, and neurons were degenerative and necrotic at and around the trauma sites. The callus volumes(unit: mm(3)) of the two groups 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month and 2 months after trauma were 60.03±28.05 and 32.80±11.04, 78.54±15.16 and 51.36±23.02, 93.01±10.65 and 72.38±20.38, 115.26±40.00 and 60.30±13.34, respectively. The callus volumes of the two groups 2 weeks, 1 month and 2 months after trauma were statistically and significantly different (P values were 0.036, 0.006 and 0.01 respectively), and there was no difference 1 week after trauma (P=0.065). CONCLUSION This model is capable of producing accurately quantified brain injury. The animal model is credible, stable and reproducible, so it is an effective platform for studying the effect of traumatic brain injury on fracture.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the clinical effect of biodegradable conduit small gap tublization to repair peripheral nerve injury. METHODS In the study, 30 cases of fresh peripheral nerve injury in the upper extremities were recruited. After formally informed and obtaining the consent, the recruited patients were divided into the degradable chitin conduit tublization group (experimental group: 15 cases) and traditional epineurial neurorrhaphy group (control group: 15 cases). Their nerve functional recovery conditions were clinically observed according to the standard score methods provided by SHEN Ning-jiang and British Medical Research Council. The excellent and good rates of the overall nerve functional recovery were calculated. The electrophysiologic study was carried out after 6 months. RESULTS Of the total 30 cases, 28 were followed up, and there were 14 cases in the degradable chitin conduit tublization group and traditional epineurial neurorrhaphy group. The operation procedure was very simple, and the mean suture time [(8.0±0.8) min] was 20% shorter than that of the traditional epineurial neurorrhaphy group [(10.0±0.6) min]. All the wounds in the degradable chitin conduit tublization group healed as expected without rejection, hypersensitive reaction or anomalous draining. Electrophysiology examination results after 6 months displayed that the sensory nerves conduction velocity recovery rate was 77.37% of the normal value, and motor nerve conduction velocity recovery rate was 70.09% in the degradable chitin conduit tublization group. The sensory nerves conduction velocity recovery rate was 61.69% of the normal value, and motor nerve conduction velocity recovery rate was 56.15% in the traditional epineurial neurorrhaphy group. The exact propability methods was applied in the comparison of sensory and motor nerve conduction velocity recovery rate, and there was no statistically significant of two groups(sensory nerve conduction velocity recovery rate P=0.678;motor nerve conduction velocity recovery rate P=0.695). The combinated functional recovery excellent and good rates after repair in the degradable chitin conduit tublization group were 78.57%, while 28.57% in the traditional epineurial neurorrhaphy group. The Fisher's exact probabilistic method was applied in the comparison of combinated functional recovery excellent and good rates, and there was statistically significant of two groups(P=0.021). CONCLUSION The operation procedure of the degradable chitin conduit tublization is very simple and the clinical recovery effect is much better than that of the traditional epineurial neurorrhaphy. The biodegradable conduit small gap tublization methods to repair peripheral nerve injury has the possibility to substitute the traditional epineurial neurorrhaphy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the clinical curative effect of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) combined with cervical nerve root compression and to explore the differences between CTS combined with cervical nerve root compression and simple CTS in the clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment. METHODS From February 2004 to October 2010, 93 cases (120 sides) were selected among the patients (21 males and 72 females) adopted to our department and primarily diagnosed as CTS, of whom 29 had cervical nerve root compression. Neurolysis of peripheral nerve was conducted in the 93 cases, and the mean follow-up period was 16 months. RESULTS The results of the improvements of symptoms and signs after operation were evaluated by the British Medical Research Council (BMRC). According to the BMRC scores, we divided the patients into three stages: excellent, good and none. In the 93 patients, 29 were with visible nerve root compression in radiograph or magnetic resonance imaging, in whom the excellent rate was 86.21%, and the good rate 13.79%, meanwhile in the patients without nerve root compression, the excellent rate was 90.63% and the good rate 9.37%. CONCLUSION In the case of CTS combined with cervical nerve root compression, our findings are as follows: Firstly, neurolysis of peripheral nerve has an accurate curative effect; Secondly, neurolysis of peripheral nerve may decline the symptoms of nerve root compression; Thirdly, patients with nerve root compression are obviously more common in men, therefore, we should pay attention to the double crash when it comes to the male patient.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: A significant challenge for effectively treating cancer is overcoming biological barriers that reduce circulation times and increase degradation of possible treatments. We established an innovative approach to address this issue by embedding drug-containing nanoparticles within the pores of a larger mesoporous silicon particle (MSP) in order to optimize site-specific localization and release of therapeutic agents. The objective is to develop a nanotherapeutic-based multistage platform for breast cancer treatment, wherein paclitaxel, a mitotic inhibitor used in the treatment of breast tumors, will be loaded into polymeric micelles, which in turn will be loaded within MSPs. We hypothesize that this nested incorporation of drugs within MSPs, combined with enhanced tumor transport, will result in a more pronounced and sustained antitumor effect.
Materials and Methods: Micelles were assembled from amphiphilic block copolymers consisting of poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(∈-caprolactone) (PEG-PCL, MW = 5k-5k). Nanoparticle size, zeta potential, and morphology was determined, and PTX loading and release kinetics from micelles analyzed. Drug-containing micelles were incorporated into MSPs by a previously established dry-loading method, wherein nanoparticles were incorporated into pores via capillary action. Loading of fluorescent micelles was used to verify loading within MSPs via fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry analysis. Sulforhodamine B assays were used to evaluate the in vitro antitumor efficacy of the platform in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-468 breast cancer cells. In vivo efficacy was evaluated in MDA-MB-468 breast tumors in female nu/nu mice.
Results: Resulting micelles had an average size of 20 nm, as confirmed through TEM, with paclitaxel loaded into micelles very effectively. Release kinetics showed that 50% of the drug was released within 4 hours and 80% released within 24 hours. Loading of micelles into MSPs depended largely on electrostatic interactions, with micelles loading better within pores of MSPs displaying increased positive charge. Micelle loading into MSPs was successful as demonstrated by flow cytometry, and release was significantly retarded (< 30% of drug released over 4 d). Incubation of micelle-containing MSPs with breast cancer cells in vitro showed that MSPs could be internalized by cells, after which a sustained and delayed release of the payload was observed in cells. Breast tumors treated with MSPs demonstrated sustained tumor suppression (169 mm3 compared to initial starting volume of 200 mm3) at day 35 following a single injection. It is important to note that sustained tumor efficacy was achieved with nanoparticle and free drug formulations, however, with the caveat of repeated administrations.
Discussion: A novel multistage approach to chemotherapy effectively allows a secondary payload to be loaded and preserved within the MSPs until reaching the tumor site. This prevents premature release of the drug and allows for a sustained release which may potentially result in fewer patient side effects. Future studies will involve loading of multiple nanoparticle types into MSPs and addition of targeting and diagnostic components.

Abstract
Cryptotanshinone, derived from the roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge and Salvia przewalskii Maxim, is the major active component and possesses significant antibacterial, antidermatophytic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities. The objective of this study was to investigate the intestinal absorptive characteristics of cryptotanshinone as well as the absorptive behavior influenced by co-administration of the diterpenoid tanshinones and danxingfang using an in vitro everted rat gut sac model. The results showed a good linear correlation between cryptotanshinone of absorption and the incubation time from 10 to 70min. The concentration dependence showed that a non-linear correlation existed between the cryptotanshinone absorption and the concentration at 100 μg/ml. Coexisting diterpenoid tanshinones and danxingfang could significantly enhance the absorption of cryptotanshinone. Coexisting diterpenoid tanshinones and danxingfang, which influenced cryptotanshinone's absorption, manifested as similar to that of the P-glycoprotein inhibitor. The underlying mechanism of the improvement of oral bioavailability was proposed that coexisting diterpenoid tanshinones and danxingfang could decrease the efflux transport of cryptotanshinone by P-glycoprotein.

Abstract
Abstract. cIn this study, we reported the analysis of THRSP gene polymorphisms in 610 goats of three breeds: Xinong Saanen (SN), Guanzhong (GZ) and Boer (BG). We identified new allelic variant: P2-G39294A (GenBank acc. no. JN618075) in the three goat breeds. At P2 locus, GG, GA and AA genotypes were found in the three goat breeds. The frequencies of G allele were 0.54–0.55 and frequencies of A allele were 0.46–0.45, and the PIC was 0.37. The SNP locus was in Hardy-Weinberg disequilibrium in Boer goat breed (P<0.05). Association of polymorphisms with growth traits was done at P2 locus in Boer goat breed. The result showed that AA genotype had remarkable growth traits at P2 locus (P<0.05). Therefore, these results suggest that THRSP gene is a strong candidate gene that affects growth traits in goat.

Abstract
UHRF2, ubiquitin-like with PHD and ring finger domains 2, is a nuclear E3 ubiquitin ligase, which is involved in cell cycle and epigenetic regulation. UHRF2 interacts with multiple cell cycle proteins, including cyclins (A2, B1, D1, and E1), CDK2, and pRb; moreover, UHRF2 could ubiquitinate cyclin D1 and cyclin E1. Also, UHRF2 has been shown to be implicated in epigenetic regulation by associating with DNMTs, G9a, HDAC1, H3K9me2/3 and hemi-methylated DNA. We found that UHRF2 associates with tumor suppressor protein p53, and p53 is ubiquitinated by UHRF2 in vivo and in vitro. Given that both UHRF2 and p53 are involved in cell cycle regulation, this study may suggest a novel signaling pathway on cell proliferation.

Abstract
The immunostimulatory activity of Sophora flavescens polysaccharide (SFPW1) was evaluated by using in vitro cell models and in vivo animal models. The results demonstrated that SFPW1 could effectively inhibit the tumor growth in H22 tumor-bearing mice and promote the splenocyte proliferation, thus resulting in a prolonged life survival. For assay in vitro, SFPW1 significantly strengthened peritoneal macrophages to devour H22 tumor cells and stimulated macrophages to produce nitric oxide (NO) via up-regulation of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) activity. However, no direct cytotoxicity against H22 tumor cells was observed in vitro. These results suggest that SFPW1 might be a strong natural immunomodulator and the antitumor effect of this polysaccharide is associated with its potent immunostimulating effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acrolein signaling is important during spinal cord injury; whether it is involved in somatic and emotional pain is not clear. Hydralazine is a potent antihypertensive drug and can scavenge acrolein efficiently. OBJECTIVE We hypothesized that hydralazine decreases spinal level acrolein and renders analgesic effects with some side effects, which was tested in the current study. STUDY DESIGN Subcutaneous injection of formalin was used to induce somatic and emotional pain responses. The spinal neuronal activation (FOS expression) and acrolein expression were evaluated at 2 hours after subcutaneous formalin injection. The possible side effects of hydralazine on the murine central nervous system or cardiovascular system were evaluated at one hour after hydralazine injection with open field, elevated plus maze and rotarod tests, or telemetrical measurement of mean artery blood pressure and heart rate. RESULTS The subcutanous injection of formalin into the left hind paw induced significant somatic and emotional pain responses, evaluated by the biphasic spontaneous flinch/licking of the injected hind paw and interphase ultrasonic vocalizations during the one hour window after formalin injection. The spinal acrolein level was significantly increased and neurons were activated at 2 hours after formalin injection. Intraperitoneal injection of hydralazine (at 0.1, 1 or 10 mg/kg of body weight) at one hour before formalin challenging dose-dependently attenuated the formalin induced pain responses with an analgesic 50% effect dose ranging from 0.2 to 1 mg/kg of body weight. Furthermore, the neuronal activation and elevated acrolein expression were dose-dependently inhibited by hydralazine pretreatment. The side effects of intraperitoneal hydralazine on locomotion, anxiety, and motor coordination at one hour after hydralazine administration had negative results. The main side effects of hydralazine were an insignificant decrease of blood pressure and a significant increase of heart rates at high dose (10 mg/kg of body weight). LIMITATIONS This study is limited because the analgesic effect of hydralazine was tested on only one type of acute inflammatory pain model; however, its effect on chronic inflammatory or neuropathic pain needs to be further investigated. CONCLUSIONS Based on the above findings, hydralazine may find its new application of analgesia within a safe dose window (around one mg/kg of body weight) without causing severe side effects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: This prospective, randomized study compared the effectiveness of the cable pin system (CPS) versus tension band wiring (TBW) for olecranon fracture fixation. METHODS: Patients with acute transverse or slight oblique olecranon fractures were randomly divided into two groups: one fixed by CPS and the other by TBW. Clinical outcome data were collected and analysed following a mean duration of 21 months. RESULTS: The mean ± SD fracture healing time was significantly shorter in the CPS group ( n = 30; 9.73 ± 2.02 weeks) compared with the TBW group ( n = 32; 11.13 ± 2.21 weeks). One patient in the CPS group and seven patients in the TBW group experienced postoperative complications; this difference was statistically significant. The mean ± SD Mayo Elbow Performance Score in the CPS group was significantly higher (88.67 ± 6.42) than that in the TBW group (80.78 ± 11.99). Logistic regression analysis showed an association between fixation method and fracture healing time, complications and elbow function. CONCLUSIONS: Internal fixation by CPS is an effective method for olecranon fracture and is associated with a shorter healing time, fewer complications and better function than TBW.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and relative risk factors among Chongqing pre-diabetes patients. METHODS A total of 750 participants were recruited in this cross-sectional study. All participants underwent a complete physical examination and an oral glucose-tolerance test. In all, 110 of the 125 newly diagnosed pre-diabetics and their healthy spouses as controls were examined with fluorescence fundus angiographies, and their blood with biochemical analyses. All the pre-diabetics with DR (23 subjects), 23 normal controls and 23 pre-diabetics without DR were compared for serum concentrations of regulated upon activation, normal T-expressed and secreted (RANTES). Student's t-test was used to compare continuous variables, and χ (2) test and analysis of variance to compare proportions among groups. Multiple logistic regression models were used to determine the risk factors for DR in pre-diabetics. RESULTS In all, 20.91% of the 110 pre-diabetics showed mild non-proliferative DR (NPDR). There was a statistically significant difference in serum concentrations of RANTES between pre-diabetics with and without DR (P<0.01), and also between pre-diabetics with DR and normal controls (P<0.01). However, age, body mass index, waist-hip ratio, triacylglycerol (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein-C, low-density lipoprotein-C, blood urea nitrogen, blood creatinine, and urine albumin excretion rate seemed to have no reliable relationship with DR in pre-diabetics (P>0.05). CONCLUSION The prevalence of DR in Chongqing pre-diabetes patients in the study was about 20.91% and only mild NPDR was found. It seems that RANTES is one possible risk factor associated with DR in pre-diabetics, not age, TG and TC, and others.

Abstract
A new semi-empirical seven-parameter BRDF model is developed in the UV band using experimentally measured data. The model is based on the five-parameter model of Wu and the fourteen-parameter model of Renhorn and Boreman. Surface scatter, bulk scatter and retro-reflection scatter are considered. An optimizing modeling method, the artificial immune network genetic algorithm, is used to fit the BRDF measurement data over a wide range of incident angles. The calculation time and accuracy of the five- and seven-parameter models are compared. After fixing the seven parameters, the model can well describe scattering data in the UV band.

Abstract
Three adsorbents were prepared by different modification methods, which were grafting silica gel with (3-aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane, grafting silica gel with acrylamide polymer, and impregnating silica gel with acrylamide polymer, respectively. The characterization of materials was carried out by N(2) adsorption experiments, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermo-gravimetric analysis, and elemental analyses. The results showed that the amine group was successfully loaded on all three modified adsorbents; among that, the polymer-modified silica adsorbents had higher amine content and larger surface area than the aminopropyl-grafted silica adsorbent and displayed higher thermal stability than the other polymer-modified silica materials previously reported. The CO(2) adsorption/desorption experiments performed at 25°C by TGA-DSC method showed that the highest CO(2) adsorption capacity (0.98 mmol/g) was observed for the polymer-impregnated silica adsorbent. CO(2) adsorbed on all samples was completely desorbed by purging with inert gas at 60°C except for the aminopropyl-grafted silica material, which showed the highest enthalpy of CO(2) adsorption.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the ASES, Constant and HSS score systems and their significance on postoperative function of the shoulder. METHODS Totally 172 cases of proximal humeral fracture of five affiliated hospital from September 2004 to September 2008 were analyzed. All the functional outcome of the involved shoulder were evaluated by ASES, Constant, HSS score and patient self score. The correlations and agreement of three shoulder scales were analyzed with Pearson correlation test and Bland-Altman plot in different age groups and fracture types. RESULTS (1) The Constant score were lower than other two scores in the same age group and fracture type (F = 13.62 and 4.80, P < 0.05). (2) The correlations between three shoulder scales: ASES and Constant (r = 0.754, P = 0.0003), ASES and HSS (r = 0.755, P = 0.0001), Constant and HSS (r = 0.858, P = 0.0002). The correlations between three shoulder scales and patient self evaluation: ASES (r = 0.602, P = 0.0002), Constant (r = 0.705, P = 0.0001), HSS (r = 0.663, P = 0.0037). The Bland-Altman plot shows three shoulder scales have good agreement. (3)The correlation between Constant score and patient self evaluation decreased in the elder group and severe fracture type. CONCLUSIONS ASES, Constant, HSS shoulder score systems are all fit to evaluate the functional outcome of the shoulder, they have good correlation and agreement. Constant score in recommended for its high correlation coefficient with patient self evaluation score. However, its age bias must be paid attention in clinical practice. ASES shoulder score can be used in remote follow-up.

Abstract
Hantaviruses infect human endothelial cells (ECs) and are known to cause vascular-permeability-based diseases, including hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). The αvβ3 integrins, which are highly expressed on the surface of ECs, serve as hantavirus receptors. Specifically, the β3 integrin and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor 2 (VEGFR2) form a functional complex and interact with each other. Signaling through this complex causes cytoskeletal reorganization, which is one of the most important mechanisms underlying hyperpermeability. In this study, we show that VEGF dramatically enhances Hantaan virus (HTNV)-directed permeability and increases the reorganization of the cytoskeleton and the disruption of junctional organizations in an EC monolayer at 3 days postinfection. HTNV infection reduced the effect of VEGF on adhesion, migration, and the upregulation of β3 expression, but the infection alone upregulated the expression of β3 and VEGFR2. These results indicate that in addition to its role in blocking β3 integrin activation as reported previously, HTNV blocks the function of the complex of VEGFR2 and β3 integrin, and the dysfunction of the complex may contribute to cytoskeletal reorganization in an HTNV-directed hyperpermeability response to VEGF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most common extracranial solid tumor in infants. Currently, the mainstay of NB chemotherapy is combination treatment with some traditional drugs, but these combination regimens are always inefficient. METHODS The aim of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory effect of a combination of doxorubicin and bortezomib, a novel anticancer drug and the first prote-asome inhibitor approved for the treatment of human malignant tumors, on the proliferation of two human NB cell lines, SK-N-SH and SH-SY5Y. The general mechanism underlying this combined effect was also investigated. Synergistic inhibitory effects on human NB cell proliferation were evaluated using the median-effect principle. The pro-apoptotic effects of these drugs were evaluated using double staining with annexin-V-FITC and propidium iodide. RESULTS Synergistic inhibitory effects on proliferation were observed when a combination of bortezomib and doxorubicin was applied to cultured NB cells. A similar synergistic effect on apoptosis was also observed when the two drugs were used concurrently, which suggested that the possible mechanism underlying the observed synergistic inhibitory effect might be related to apoptosis. CONCLUSION The combination of bortezomib and doxorubicin appears to be a promising strategy to treat NB.

Abstract
A series of molecularly imprinted adsorbents of CO(2) were developed by molecular self-assembly procedures, using ethanedioic acid, acrylamide, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as template, functional monomer, and cross-linker, respectively. Textural properties of these adsorbents were characterized by N(2) adsorption experiment, thermo-gravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. CO(2) adsorption capacities of adsorbents were investigated by thermo-gravimetric balance under 15% CO(2)/85% Ar atmosphere. Adsorption selectivity of CO(2) was studied by fixed-bed adsorption/desorption experiments. All the adsorbents displayed good thermal stability at 200 °C. Among them, MIP1b, with the higher amine content, exhibited the largest CO(2) capacity, which maintained steady after 50 adsorption-desorption cycles. Although MIP3 showed the highest specific surface, the CO(2) capacity was lower than that of MIP1b. CO(2) adsorption mechanism of molecularly imprinted adsorbents was determined to be physical sorption according to the adsorption enthalpies integrated from the DSC heatflow profiles. The calculated separation factors of CO(2) under 15% CO(2)/85% N(2) atmosphere were above 100 for all adsorbents.

Abstract
An excellent electrochemical sensing platform has been designed by combining the huge specific surface area of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and the remarkable conductivity of ionic liquid (IL). IL can easily untangle CNTs bundles and disperse CNTs by itself under grinding condition due to the π-π interaction between CNTs and IL. The resulting nanocomposites showed an augmentation on the voltammetric and amperometric behaviors of electrocatalytic activity toward O(2) and NADH. Therefore, such an efficient platform was developed to fabricate mediator-free oxygen sensor and glucose biosensor based on glucose dehydrogenase (GDH). O(2) could be determined in the range of zero to one hundred percent of O(2) content with the detection limit of 126 μg L(-1) (S/N=3). The glucose biosensor which was constructed by entrapping GDH into chitosan on the nanocomposites modified glassy carbon electrode surface, exhibited good electrocatalytic oxidation toward glucose with a detection limit of 9 μM in the linear range of 0.02-1mM. We also applied the as-prepared sensors to detect oxygen and glucose in real blood samples and acquired satisfied results.

Abstract
An exact analytical solution is obtained for the scattering of electromagnetic waves from a plane wave with arbitrary directions of propagation and polarization by an aggregate of interacting homogeneous uniaxial anisotropic spheres with parallel primary optical axes. The expansion coefficients of a plane wave with arbitrary directions of propagation and polarization, for both TM and TE modes, are derived in terms of spherical vector wave functions. The effects of the incident angle α and the polarization angle β on the radar cross sections (RCSs) of several types of collective uniaxial anisotropic spheres are numerically analyzed in detail. The characteristics of the forward and backward RCSs in relation to the incident wavelength are also numerically studied. Selected results on the forward and backward RCSs of several types of square arrays of SiO₂ spheres illuminated by a plane wave with different incident angles are described. The accuracy of the expansion coefficients of the incident fields is verified by comparing them with the results obtained from references when the plane wave is degenerated to a z-propagating and x- or y-polarized plane wave. The validity of the theory is also confirmed by comparing the numerical results with those provided by a CST simulation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze complications of surgically treated proximal humeral fractures with locking plate. METHODS Eighty three (30 males and 53 females) coherent unstable proximal humeral fractures were treated with locking plate from January 2007 to January 2010 with a mean follow-up lasting 23.5 months ( 10-51 months ). Their mean age was 66.4 years (33-89 years). The patients were evaluated with outpatient physical examination, X-ray film, visual analogue scale (VAS), and Constant-Murley scores. Complications and functional outcome of the involved shoulders were recorded and estimated. Complications were diagnosed in 15 cases, varus malunion in 6, humeral head necrosis in 3, delayed union in 1, screw cut-out in 3, and subacromio-impingement in 3.Four cases were combined with two or more complications. RESULT Four-part fractures had higher complication risks in implant related complications (P=0.009)and none implant related complications (P=0.003).Age and comobities had little influence on complication occurrence. CONCLUSION Although locking plate provides optimal clinical results in proximal humeral fracture management, its complications should be highly considered. Preoperative evaluation, implant option, accurate reconstructions and rehabilitations are key points to restore the shoulder function.

Abstract
The exchange coupling of a group of three dinuclear sandwich-type polyoxomolybdates [MM'(AsMo7O27)2](12-) with MM' = CrCr, FeFe, FeCr are theoretically predicted from combined DFT and broken-symmetry (BS) approach. Eight different XC functionals are utilized to calculate the exchange-coupling constant J from both the full crystalline structures and model structures of smaller size. The comparison between theoretical values and accurate experimental results supports the applicability of DFT-BS method in this new type of sandwich-type dinuclear polyoxomolybdates. However, a careful choice of functionals is necessary to achieve the desired accuracy. The encouraging results obtained from calculations on model structures highlight the great potential of application of structure modeling in theoretical study of POM. Structural modeling may not only reduce the computational cost of large POM species but also be able to take into account the external field effect arising from solvent molecules in solution or counterions in crystal.

Abstract
Nucleosome-depleted regions (NDRs) are ubiquitous on eukaryotic promoters. The formation of many NDRs cannot be readily explained by previously proposed mechanisms. Here, we carry out a focused study on a physiologically important NDR in the yeast CLN2 promoter (CLN2pr). We show that this NDR does not result from intrinsically unfavorable histone-DNA interaction. Instead, we identified eight conserved factor binding sites, including that of Reb1, Mcm1, and Rsc3, that cause the local nucleosome depletion. These nucleosome-depleting factors (NDFs) work redundantly, and simultaneously mutating all their binding sites eliminates CLN2pr NDR. The loss of the NDR induces unreliable "on/off" expression in individual cell cycles, but in the presence of the NDR, NDFs have little direct effect on transcription. We present bioinformatic evidence that the formation of many NDRs across the genome involves multiple NDFs. Our findings also provide significant insight into the composition and spatial organization of functional promoters.

Abstract
Identifying the phase purity of CdS nanorods (NRs) is complicated by the serious overlap between the X-ray diffraction peaks of zinc blende and wurtzite phases as well as anisotropic growth, which might hide a mixed phase. Here we show that the density gradient ultracentrifugation rate separation method can be used to sort CdS NRs synthesized under nitrogen according to differences in particle size and morphology. Furthermore, it was found that the different sized NRs formed in a single batch synthesis had different phases: the thinner ones (<3.5 nm in diameter) were predominantly wurtzite phase, while the thicker ones (>5 nm in diameter) were mainly zinc blende phase. Dark-field transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM images indicated the presence of numerous stacking faults in the thick zinc blende rods, while the wurtzite thin rods were exclusively single crystals. As a result of the differences in phase and stacking faults, the NRs showed different photoluminescent properties. The development of an effective way of separating such NRs thus leads to further insight into the differences in phase, structure, and optical properties between individual colloidal particles synthesized in a single batch. A preliminary mathematical model of the separation process has been proposed.

Abstract
RNA-based protein synthesis produces L-amino acid-containing proteins and peptides. D-amino acid-containing peptides (DAACPs) can be generated from L-amino acid peptides via post-translational modification. In the nervous system, the conformational change of a single L-amino acid in a peptide to its D-form results in altered bioactivity, with some DAACPs having orders-of-magnitude enhanced efficacy. However, this modification is often overlooked when characterizing endogenous peptides. Here, with the use of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) time-of-flight (TOF)/TOF mass spectrometry, neuropeptides that have the second residue isomerized to the D-isoform are distinguished from their L-epimers via differences in the relative amounts of specific fragment ions during tandem MS. With the appropriate fragment ions chosen, and in some cases with the use of metal adducts, epimer discrimination is optimized. Specifically, the cardioexcitatory peptide Asn-(D)Trp-Phe-amide (NdWFa) was assayed directly from neurons isolated from the sea slug Aplysia californica; the fraction of the peptide with the second residue (W) in the D- versus L-form was 90 ± 10%. We demonstrate that this approach is well suited for confirming DAACPs directly from cells and tissue, advancing our understanding of the l to d modification and the role it plays in cell-to-cell signaling.

Abstract
Acute and subacute investigations were carried out to evaluate the safety of scutellarin, an active flavone glycoside that has been used to treating cardiocerebral vascular diseases and cerebral infarction in rodents. For the acute study, scutellarin was administered to mice by gavage at different dose levels. Scutellarin caused dose-dependent general behavior adverse effects, but the LD₅₀ values could not be detected, and the maximum tolerated dose was more than 10 g/kg. In the subacute study, scutellarin was administered orally at doses of 100 and 500 mg/kg daily for 30 days to rats. Body weight, heart rate, blood pressure, biochemical, hematological and urine parameters were determined at the end of the experimental day. Daily oral administration for up to 30 days did not result in death or significant changes in hematology, blood chemistries or urinalysis. However, a 30 day regimen of scutellarin at doses of 100 or 500 mg/kg led to non-dose related decreases in BUN and triglyceride levels. Scutellarin was found to be minimally toxic or non-toxic in rodents. In view of the doses of the components used, the results from acute and subacute toxicity studies suggest that this component has a sufficient margin of safety for therapeutic use.

Abstract
Two recent theoretical models, Bai et al. (2004, 2007) and Tadigotla et al. (2006), formulated thermodynamic explanations of sequence-dependent transcription pausing by RNA polymerase (RNAP). The two models differ in some basic assumptions and therefore make different yet overlapping predictions for pause locations, and different predictions on pause kinetics and mechanisms. Here we present a comprehensive comparison of the two models. We show that while they have comparable predictive power of pause locations at low NTP concentrations, the Bai et al. model is more accurate than Tadigotla et al. at higher NTP concentrations. Pausing kinetics predicted by Bai et al. is also consistent with time-course transcription reactions, while Tadigotla et al. is unsuited for this type of kinetic prediction. More importantly, the two models in general predict different pausing mechanisms even for the same pausing sites, and the Bai et al. model provides an explanation more consistent with recent single molecule observations.

Abstract
Background Data on symptoms and radiographic changes in patients with pandemic 2009 influenza A(H1N1) (A[H1N1]) pneumonia during convalescence have not been reported. Methods During October 26, 2009, and January 23, 2010, adult patients with pneumonia with laboratory-confirmed or clinically suspected A(H1N1) infections were observed for clinical characteristics, high-resolution chest CT scan, and lung function test changes during acute and 3-month convalescent phases. Results Of the 65 case subjects, the median age was 41 (interquartile range [IQR], 28-57) years, 60.0% were men, and 55.4% had at least one underlying medical condition. Sixty-two patients started oseltamivir therapy within a median of 5 (IQR, 4-6) days from the onset of illness, and 31 received IV corticosteroids. ARDS developed in 33 patients, and 24 were treated initially with noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV). In this group, NPPV was successful in 13 patients (54.2%). Nine patients died at a median of 16 (IQR, 10-24) days after onset of illness. Multivariate Cox regression identified two independent risk factors for death: progressive dyspnea after resolution of fever (relative risk, 5.852; 95% CI, 1.395-24.541; P = .016) and a higher APACHE (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation) II score on presentation (relative risk for each point, 1.312; 95% CI, 1.140-1.511; P < .001). At 3-month follow-up of survivors with A(H1N1), ground-glass opacities were still present, although diminished, in 85.7%, and diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide was mildly reduced in 61.5%. Conclusions Ground-glass opacities and decreased diffusing capacity were the main abnormalities observed at 3-month follow-up of survivors of A(H1N1).

Abstract
The resistance rate of 67 Mycoplasma pneumoniae isolates from 356 ambulatory adult patients with respiratory tract infection was 69% (46 of 67). All 46 macrolide-resistant strains harbored point mutations in the 23S ribosomal RNA gene. Patients infected with macrolide-resistant M. pneumoniae required significantly longer durations of antibiotic therapy and had longer time to resolution of fever.

Abstract
To achieve high compaction, most genomic DNA in eukaryotes is incorporated into nucleosomes; however, regulatory factors and transcriptional machinery must gain access to chromatin to extract genetic information. This conflict is partially resolved by a particular arrangement of nucleosome locations on the genome. Across all eukaryotic species, promoters and other regulatory sequences are more nucleosome-depleted, whereas transcribed regions tend to be occupied with well-positioned, high-density nucleosomal arrays. This nucleosome positioning pattern, as well as its dynamic regulation, facilitates the access of transcription factors to their target sites and plays a crucial role in determining the transcription level, cell-to-cell variation and activation or repression dynamics.
