[Results of using the reflomat for determining glucose concentration, and the influence of glycolysis inhibitors on Reflotest-glucose (author's transl)]

There was a close correlation between the hexokinase-glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase method and reflomat/Reflotest-glucose on capillary blood samples without addition of glycolysis-inhibitors. The relative deviations were less than 10% over the entire range. In systematic studies set up to determine the influence of sodium fluoride and sodium monoiodo-acetate on the reflomat/Reflotest glucose system it was demonstrated that sodium monoiodo-acetate can be used when determining glucose with reflomat/Reflotest glucose, while sodium fluoride produced false values with this system.

Lysosomal storage in Swainsona spp. toxicosis: an induced mannosidosis

Ingestion of Swainsona spp. by grazing livestock results in a chronic disease characterized by neurological disturbances and intense vacuolation of cells in most organs. Experiments were carried out using Swainsona canescens and evidence is presented to show that tissues from affected animals contain high levels of mannose-rich oligosaccharides and that the plant contains an inhibitor of lysosomal alpha-mannosidase. It is concluded that ingestion of Swainsona induces a lysosomal storage disease, biochemically and morphologically similar to genetically determined mannosidosis. The role of this process in relation to Swainsona toxicosis is discussed.

Genetic control of LDH isozymes in the Rana esculenta complex

Studies of LDH isozymes in the European green frogs showed that the synthesis of the B subunits is controlled by 3 alleles at a single genetic locus. The genetic evidence supports the hypothesis that Rana esculenta is the hybrid of R. lessonae X R. ridibunda.

Depsidone synthesis. VII. Vicanicin and norvicanicin

The lichen Psoroma sphinctrinurn (Mont.) Nyl. occurs in two or more chemical strains. 2,7-Dichloro- 3 - hydroxy -8-methoxy- 1,4,6,9 - tetramethyl - 11H- dibenzo[b,e][l,4]dioxepin- 11-one (vicanicin) (2), a known depsidone, is a metabolite of one strain, and 2,7-dichloro-3,8-dihydroxy-1,4,6,9-tetramethyl-1lH-dibenzo[b,e][1,4]dioxepin-11-one (norvicanicin) (3) is shown to be a metabolite of another. By oxidative coupling of an appropriate benzophenone (7) and subsequent steps both of these metabolites were synthesized.

Depsidone synthesis. IV. Caloploicin

The synthesis of the lichen depsidone caloploicin (2,4,7-trichloro-3-hydroxy-8-methoxy-1,6,9- trimethyldibenzo[b,e][l,4]dioxepin-11-one) (1) by oxidative coupling of 5'-chloro-2,2',4-trihydroxy-4- methoxy-3',6,6'-trimethylbenzophenone (23), and subsequent steps, is described.
