Six ways to add more space

In today's cost-conscious climate, hospitals frequently are finding it advantageous to expand an existing facility rather than erect a new one. A number of expansion alternatives are described herein, and the benefits and liabilities of each are delineated. Whatever construction alternative is chosen, the decision should be arrived at through a comprehensive consideration of the alternatives by all members of the building team--hospital, architect, and contractor.

Preselection of alarms in a hybrid system for screening of cervical cancer

In this report, a preselection of alarms in a system for automated screening of cervical cancer based on depositing the cell sample linearly as a "cell trace" on a tape and analyzing it at different decision levels with increasing complexity, and preliminary results on analyzing cervical material with this system are discussed. The "cell trace" is analyzed with the slit-scan technique. Six parameters are computed: 1) cellular diameter; 2) nuclear diameter; 3) nuclear fluorescence (acriflavin-Feulgen) as nuclear DNA; 4) cellular fluorescence; 5) nuclear to cytoplasm ratio (N/C ratio); and 6) nuclear density. At present, only nuclear fluorescence is used to define a decision boundary between normal and potentially atypical cells. Under this criteria the slit-scan analysis leaves 5% of the events in a sample that must be rechecked at a second decision level in normal cell samples. A further reduction is expected when several slit-scan parameters are used at the first decision step. All events declared suspicious will be investigated in more detail by a two dimensional image analyzing system where the fluorescence image is generated by a laser scanning system. Results obtained in preliminary experiments are discussed in this paper.

Classification of suicidal behaviors: I. Quantifying intent and medical lethality

Previous studies of attempted suicide have cast doubt on the value of assessing psychological intent. By identifying a moderating variable, namely, the attempter's preconceptions about the lethality of his act, the authors were able to solve the puzzle of the low correlations between intent and lethality. Suicidal intent correlates highly with medical lethality when the attempter has sufficient knowledge to assess properly the probable outcome of his attempt. The authors conclude that suicidal intent and medical lethality are useful dimensions in classifying suicidal behavior.

Hormonogenesis in whole and sliced rat thyroid lobes maintained in organ cultures

Whole and sliced thyroid lobes were maintained in organ culture for 22–24 hours. Both whole and sliced lobes were able to take up radio-iodide from the medium and to synthetize a high percentage of iodothyronines. It appears that sliced lobes are more suitable for incubation over long periods since they take up significantly more iodide from the medium.

Frostig training with headstart children

Two groups of Headstart children in a northwestern state were evaluated for test-retest changes on the Frostig Developmental Test of Visual Perception (FDTVP) and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) following training of the one group using Frostig-Horne materials. Significant between-group differences were observed only on FDTVP Area IV, Position in space.
