Stopped-flow X-ray scattering device with a slit-type mixer

A slit-type mixer specially designed for stopped-flow X-ray scattering was constructed. It mixes two solutions at a time, allowing a large-sized window to be used immediately after mixing. Dead time of the mixer was 13 ms with 3.5 kg/cm2 of pressure at the piston head. It has been successfully used for studying the tetramer-dimer interconversion of phosphorylase a. The applicability of this mixer to other detection methods, far-UV circular dichroism, light scattering, EXAFS and fluorescence is also indicated.

Bony mass associated with hypertrophy of the sternohyoid muscle after radical neck dissection

As a late complication after radical neck dissection, this paper reports a bony mass at the sternal end of the clavicle associated with hypertrophy of the sternohyoid muscle. The bony mass and hypertrophy of the muscle were considered due to continuous mechanical strain by the drooping of the shoulder caused by injury of the accessory and cervical nerves, left-handed physical labour, and the lack of the sternocleidomastoid muscle in rotating the head.

Changes in collagen types during the healing of rabbit tooth extraction wounds

Three alpha chains of type V collagen--alpha 1 (V), alpha 2 (V), and alpha 3 (V)--were initially demonstrated together with the expected collagen types I and III in the pepsin-soluble fraction of both normal mandibular bone and tooth extraction wound tissues of rabbits, as analyzed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-gel electrophoresis. The total collagen content of each extraction wound, as determined by the hydroxyproline assay, was observed to increase continuously from day 5 through day 17 and then leveled off or decreased. The ratio of type V to type I collagen was significantly higher in the initial stage of wound healing and decreased sharply down to the level of mandibular bone by day 5. The ratio of type III to type I collagen in the pepsin-soluble fraction increased and reached a maximum on day 5, whereas it was maximal on day 7 in the cyanogen bromide-soluble fraction, and thereafter decreased gradually in both fractions. The ratio for the pepsin-soluble fraction was, however, significantly higher than that for the cyanogen bromide-soluble fraction in the early stage of wound healing.

Malignant chemodectoma (paraganglioma) of the larynx. A case report with electron microscopy and biochemical assay

This reports presents a case of malignant chemodectoma in the epiglottic region of a 47-year-old man. His initial complaint was laryngeal discomfort and he expired from generalized metastases of the tumor about one year after operation. The tumor was detected by laryngoscopy and laryngogram. The yellow parenchymatous tumor, 2.8 x 2.5 x 1.5 cm in size, was resected together with two enlarged regional lymph nodes. The mass was subjected to a histopathological study and biochemical assay. Microscopically, the tumor was located in the submucosa of the epiglottis and showed an alveolar growth pattern of comparatively uniform tumor cells. Neurosecretory granules were clearly demonstrated by Grimelius' method and by electron microscopy. The biochemical assay revealed that the tumor contained small amounts of serotonin, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine. The distribution of paraganglia as the source of these tumors, the clinicopathological review of the previous reports and significance of neurosecretory granules are discussed.

[Transportation of cefotiam from serum to lung tissue]

Thirteen patients who were performed radical lobectomy for the disease of the chest, were administered of cefotiam (CTM) 1.0 g for an hour by intravenous drip infusion during their operation. The concentration of CTM in serum and lung tissue were determined. CTM showed very high concentration in lung tissue and very high concentration ratio of lung tissue to serum concentration for several hours. These results suggested that CTM will be useful agent for the prevention and treatment of pulmonary infection, since CTMsh owed also very potent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
