Abstract
Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O104:H4 emerged as an important pathogen when it caused a large outbreak in Germany in 2011. Little is known about the evolutionary history and genomic diversity of the bacterium. The current communication describes a comprehensive analysis of STEC O104:H4 genomes from the 2011 outbreak and other non-outbreak-related isolates. Outbreak-related isolates formed a tight cluster that shared a monophyletic relation with two non-outbreak clusters, suggesting that all three clusters originated from a common ancestor. Eight single nucleotide polymorphisms, seven of which were non-synonymous, distinguished outbreak from non-outbreak isolates. Lineage-specific markers indicated that recent partitions were driven by selective pressures associated with niche adaptation. Based on the results, an evolutionary model for STEC O104:H4 is proposed. Our analysis provides the evolutionary context at population level and describes the emergence of clones with novel properties, which is necessary for developing comprehensive approaches to early warning and control.

Abstract
Scatterplots are widely used to visualize scatter dataset for exploring outliers, clusters, local trends, and correlations. Depicting multi-class scattered points within a single scatterplot view, however, may suffer from heavy overdraw, making it inefficient for data analysis. This paper presents a new visual abstraction scheme that employs a hierarchical multi-class sampling technique to show a feature-preserving simplification. To enhance the density contrast, the colors of multiple classes are optimized by taking the multi-class point distributions into account. We design a visual exploration system that supports visual inspection and quantitative analysis from different perspectives. We have applied our system to several challenging datasets, and the results demonstrate the efficiency of our approach.

Abstract
van der Waals heterostructures, obtained by stacking layers of isolated two-dimensional atomic crystals like graphene (GE) and silicene (SE), are one of emerging nanomaterials for the development of future multifunctional devices. Thermal transport behaviors at the interface of these heterostructures play a pivotal role in determining their thermal properties and functional performance. Using molecular dynamics simulations, the interfacial thermal conductance G of an SE/GE bilayer heterostructure is studied. Simulations show that G of a pristine SE/GE bilayer at room temperature is 11.74 MW/m(2)K when heat transfers from GE to SE, and is 9.52 MW/m(2)K for a reverse heat transfer, showing apparent thermal rectification effects. In addition, G increases monotonically with both the temperature and the interface coupling strength. Furthermore, hydrogenation of GE is efficient in enhancing G if an optimum hydrogenation pattern is adopted. By changing the hydrogen coverage f, G can be controllably manipulated and maximized up to five times larger than that of pristine SE/GE. This study is helpful for understanding the interface thermal transport behaviors of novel van der Waals heterostructures and provides guidance for the design and control of their thermal properties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Hypersplenism is a common disease. The conventional treatment is splenectomy and partial splenic embolization; however, both of them have high complication rates and technical defects. Therefore, safer and more effective techniques should be considered for the treatment of hypersplenism. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) may provide an effective and safe way for treatment of hypersplenism. Therefore, we conducted this study to assess the safety and efficacy of HIFU in treatment of secondary hypersplenism. METHODS A total of 28 patients who suffered from secondary hypersplenism were treated with HIFU ablation. All patients who underwent HIFU were closely followed-up over a year. MRI scan was performed, and the spleens were observed. Blood counts and liver function tests were also carried out. RESULTS In the follow-up process, the levels of white blood cells and platelets in the blood after HIFU were significantly higher than those before HIFU, liver function also improved after HIFU treatment. In addition, the symptoms were ameliorated significantly or even disappeared. The MRI showed that the ablation area had turned into a non-perfused volume, and after 12 months of HIFU ablation, the ablated area shrank evidently; the sunken spleen formed a lobulated shape and the splenic volume decreased. CONCLUSION HIFU ablation is a safe, effective and non-invasive approach for secondary hypersplenism. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE For the first time we used HIFU ablation to treat secondary hypersplenism. It not only expands indications of HIFU but also provides better choice for the treatment of secondary hypersplenism.

Abstract
We present a cone-based ray tracing algorithm for high-quality rendering of furry objects with reflection, refraction and defocus effects. By aggregating many sampling rays in a pixel as a single cone, we significantly reduce the high supersampling rate required by the thin geometry of fur fibers. To reduce the cost of intersecting fur fibers with cones, we construct a bounding volume hierarchy for the fiber geometry to find the fibers potentially intersecting with cones, and use a set of connected ribbons to approximate the projections of these fibers on the image plane. The computational cost of compositing and filtering transparent samples within each cone is effectively reduced by approximating away in-cone variations of shading, opacity and occlusion. The result is a highly efficient ray tracing algorithm for furry objects which is able to render images of quality comparable to those generated by alternative methods, while significantly reducing the rendering time. We demonstrate the rendering quality and performance of our algorithm using several examples and a user study.

Nitric oxide (NO) is an essential signaling molecule, which is involved in many aspects of plant growth and development. There is increasing evidence that NO plays a vital role in the process of flower development, which, however, has not been comprehensively reviewed for a long time. In this review, we provide an overview of the multiplicity of NO production in plants, and discuss the potential repression mechanism of NO in flower transition and the role of NO in pollen germination and pollen tube elongation.

Abstract
Nanostructured metal oxides with both anisotropic texture and hollow structures have attracted considerable attention with respect to improved electrochemical energy storage and enhanced catalytic activity. While synthetic strategies for the preparation of binary metal oxide hollow structures are well-established, the rational design and fabrication of complex ternary metal oxide with nonspherical hollow features is still a challenge. Herein, we report a simple and scalable strategy to fabricate highly symmetric porous ternary ZnxCo3-xO4 hollow polyhedra composed of nanosized building blocks, which involves a morphology-inherited and thermolysis-induced transformation of heterobimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks. When tested as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, these hollow polyhedra have exhibited excellent electrochemical performance with high reversible capacity, excellent cycling stability, and good rate capability.

Abstract
Recent studies suggested an association of endothelial microRNA-126 (miR-126) with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In the current study, we examined whether circulating miR-126 is associated with T2DM and pre-diabetic syndrome. The study included 82 subjects with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), 75 subjects with impaired fasting glucose (IFG), 160 patients with newly diagnosed T2DM, and 138 healthy individuals. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to examine serum miR-126. Serum miR-126 was significantly lower in IGT/IFG subjects and T2DM patients than in healthy controls (p < 0.05). After six months of treatment (diet control and exercise in IGT/IFG subjects, insulin plus diet control and exercise in T2DM patients), serum miR-126 increased significantly (p < 0.05). An analysis based on serum miR-126 in the sample revealed a significantly higher odds ratio (OR) for the subjects with the lowest 1/3 of serum miR-126 for T2DM (OR: 3.500, 95% confidence interval: 1.901–6.445, p < 0.05) than subjects within the highest 1/3 of serum miR-126. Such an association was still apparent after adjusting for other major risk factors. The area under the curve (AUC) for the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was 0.792 (95% confidence interval: 0.707–0.877, p < 0.001). These results encourage the use of serum miR-126 as a biomarker for pre-diabetes and diabetes mellitus, as well as therapeutic response.

Aim: To provide insight into the biofunctionalization of complex 3D scaffolds with nanoscale precision, as well as the effect of spatial distribution of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its prolonged stimulation in combination with enhanced cell affinity of nanofibrous scaffolds on the survival/proliferation and neurite outgrowth. Methods & materials: We developed a versatile approach using layer-by-layer self-assembly to incorporate cell adhesion and spatial representation of neurotrophic factors into complex nanofibrous scaffolds. Results: Heparin/poly-L-lysine (PLL) polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) were deposited on electrospun poly-ε-caprolatone nanofibers. Well-controlled amounts of BDNF were immobilized on the PEM-modified nanofibers. In addition, longer neurite outgrowth was observed in neural progenitor cells cultured on PLL-terminating PEM scaffolds. The immobilized BDNF on PLL-terminated PEM scaffolds resulted in significantly longer neurites and higher cell numbers (p < 0.01) compared with BDNF-free and BDNF-adsorbed PLL-terminating scaffolds. Interestingly, there was no upregulation of TrkB-FL, TrkB-T1 or GAP-43 mRNAs with immobilized BDNF in day 5 cultures. Discussion & conclusion: This work reinforces the importance of the combinatorial effects of biomaterial scaffold nanostructure and spatial presentation of neurotrophins in directing neural progenitor cell fates. Abstract
Praziquantel (PZQ), prescribed as a racemic mixture, is the most readily available drug to treat schistosomiasis. In the present study, ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-QTOFMS) based metabolomics was employed to decipher the metabolic pathways and enantioselective metabolic differences of PZQ. Many phase I and four new phase II metabolites were found in urine and feces samples of mice 24h after dosing, indicating that the major metabolic reactions encompassed oxidation, dehydrogenation, and glucuronidation. Differences in the formation of all these metabolites were observed between (R)-PZQ and (S)-PZQ. In an in vitro phase I incubation system, the major involvement of CYP3A, CYP2C9, and CYP2C19 in the metabolism of PZQ, and CYP3A, CYP2C9, and CYP2C19 exhibited different catalytic activity toward the PZQ enantiomers. Apparent Km and Vmax differences were observed in the catalytic formation of three mono-oxidized metabolites by CYP2C9 and CYP3A4 further supporting the metabolic differences for PZQ enantiomers. Molecular docking showed that chirality resulted in differences in substrate location and conformation, which likely accounts for the metabolic differences. In conclusion, in silico, in vitro, and in vivo methods revealed the enantioselective metabolic profile of praziquantel.

Abstract
Brain repair following disease and injury is very limited due to difficulties in recruiting and mobilizing stem cells towards the lesion. More importantly, there is a lack of structural and trophic support to maintain viability of the limited stem/progenitor cells present. This study investigates the effectiveness of an injectable gelatin-based hydrogel in attracting neural progenitor cells (NPCs) from the subventricular zone (SVZ) towards the implant. Glial cell-line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) encapsulated within the hydrogel and porosity within the hydrogel prevents glial scar formation. By directly targeting the hydrogel implant towards the SVZ, neuroblasts can actively migrate towards and along the implant tract. Significantly more doublecortin (DCX)-positive neuroblasts surround implants at 7 d post-implantation (dpi) compared with lesion alone controls, an effect that is enhanced when GDNF is incorporated into the hydrogels. Neuroblasts are not observed at the implant boundary at 21 dpi, indicating that neuroblast migration has halted, and neuroblasts have either matured or have not survived. The development of an injectable gelatin-based hydrogel has significant implications for the treatment of some neurodegenerative diseases and brain injuries. The ability of GDNF and porosity to effectively prevent glial scar formation will allow better integration and interaction between the implant and surrounding neural tissue.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the effect of intravitreal injection administered sorafenib, a multikinase inhibitor, in a rat model of oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR). METHODS Seven-day-old Sprague-Dawley rats (n=144) were randomly assigned to six groups. Group A received normal partial oxygen pressure and groups B, C, D, E and F were exposed to hyperoxia (75±2)% from postnatal 7d (P7) to P12 to induce retinopathy of prematurity. The rats in groups C, D, E and F were received intravitreal injections of either vehicle (DMSO) or sorafenib at P12 (5, 20 and 80 µg, respectively). Then they returned to normoxia after P12. The retinas were whole-mounted and imaged with a confocal microscopy. The vascular branching points were counted to quantify neovascularization at P17. Cross-sections of the retina were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (HE). The nuclei of new vessels breaking the internal limiting membrane were counted to quantify the proliferative neovascular response. RESULTS The retinal vessel in groups B and C turned into tortuosity and a great deal of neovascularization were observed. Sorafenib-treated rats had significantly less neovascularization as compared with vehicle-treated and control rats in a dose dependent manner (P<0.05). The number of vascular branching points in A, B, C, D, E and F were 16.50±3.90, 37.44±6.47, 37.08±5.10, 30.80±6.85, 26.08±5.08 and 19.83±3.51, respectively. The number of the nuclei of retinal new vessel in A, B, C, D, E and F were 0.22±0.42, 35.66±4.70, 35.30±4.54, 27.30±4.28, 21.41±3.53, and 7.41±2.87, respectively. There were significant difference between each group (P<0.05) except groups B and C. CONCLUSION In the rat OIR model, sorafenib could inhibit retinal neovascularization in a dose dependent manner.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Shen Fu Injection (SF), which consisted of Red ginseng extraction injection (RG) and prepared aconite extraction injection (RA), is a traditional Chinese medicine mainly used for various cardiac diseases. This study is to analyse SF's effects on cardiac performance and coronary circulation. And the coronary dilating effect and mechanism of the above three injections were also explored. METHODS Mature male guinea pigs were used as our animal model. We employed two types of perfusion methods (constant pressure and constant flow) in vitro, using Langendorff heart preparations to observe the cardiac function and coronary response to SF (1/200). The coronary dilation effects of the above three injections (1/800, 1/400 and 1/200) were recorded at basal coronary resting tone and when coronary vessels were pre-contracted with a thromboxane A2 analogue (U46619), in the presence or the absence of the inhibitor of nitric oxide synthesis (L-NAME, 10-4 M), the blocker of Ca2+-activated potassium channel(TEA, 10-3 M), or the blocker of adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-sensitive potassium channel (glybenclamide) (10-5 M). RESULTS When perfused with constant pressure, SF significantly increased coronary flow, left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP) and the rate-pressure product (RPP). When perfused with constant flow, SF produced a significant reduction in the coronary perfusion pressure (CPP), LVDP and RPP. The coronary vasodilatation response of the above three injections can be reduced by L-NAME but was unaffected by TEA or glybenclamide when coronary vessels were pre-contracted with U46619 but not at resting tone. SF, RG and RA can all up-regulate eNOS expression in the human umbilical vein cells (EA.hy926). CONCLUSION We demonstrated that SF does not contribute to the inotropic change of myocardium whose improvement is due to alternation of coronary flow. The coronary dilation effect of SF was mediated through RG and RA, via promoting NO release.

Abstract
We present FaceWarehouse, a database of 3D facial expressions for visual computing applications. We use Kinect, an off-the-shelf RGBD camera, to capture 150 individuals aged 7-80 from various ethnic backgrounds. For each person, we captured the RGBD data of her different expressions, including the neutral expression and 19 other expressions such as mouth-opening, smile, kiss, etc. For every RGBD raw data record, a set of facial feature points on the color image such as eye corners, mouth contour, and the nose tip are automatically localized, and manually adjusted if better accuracy is required. We then deform a template facial mesh to fit the depth data as closely as possible while matching the feature points on the color image to their corresponding points on the mesh. Starting from these fitted face meshes, we construct a set of individual-specific expression blendshapes for each person. These meshes with consistent topology are assembled as a rank-3 tensor to build a bilinear face model with two attributes: identity and expression. Compared with previous 3D facial databases, for every person in our database, there is a much richer matching collection of expressions, enabling depiction of most human facial actions. We demonstrate the potential of FaceWarehouse for visual computing with four applications: facial image manipulation, face component transfer, real-time performance-based facial image animation, and facial animation retargeting from video to image.

Abstract
As a typical protein nanostructure, virus-based nanoparticle (VNP) of simian virus 40 (SV40), which is composed of pentamers of the major capsid protein of SV40 (VP1), has been successfully employed in guiding the assembly of different nanoparticles (NPs) into predesigned nanostructures with considerable stability. However, the stabilization mechanism of SV40 VNP remains unclear. Here, the importance of inter-pentamer disulfide bonds between cysteines in the stabilization of quantum dot (QD)-containing VNPs (VNP-QDs) is comprehensively investigated by constructing a series of VP1 mutants of cysteine to serine. Although the presence of a QD core can greatly enhance the assembly and stability of SV40 VNPs, disulfide bonds are vital to stability of VNP-QDs. Cysteine at position 9 (C9) and C104 contribute most of the disulfide bonds and play essential roles in determining the stability of SV40 VNPs as templates to guide assembly of complex nanoarchitectures. These results provide insightful clues to understanding the robustness of SV40 VNPs in organizing suprastructures of inorganic NPs. It is expected that these findings will help guide the future design and construction of protein-based functional nanostructures.

Abstract
We have characterised, using both in vivo and in vitro methods, the effects of the metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 3 (mGlu3) antagonist (LY341495) and agonist (LY379268) on the proliferation and differentiation of glioma stem cells (GSC). For in vitro studies, a CCK-8 assay was used to determine the cell proliferation, flow cytometry was performed to determine cell cycle phases, and immunohistochemistry and laser confocal microscopy were employed to detect CD133 expression. For in vivo studies, GSCs were injected into nude mice treated with either LY379268 or LY341495 and the growth of the tumours was measured after 3 weeks. When compared with controls, the proliferation rates and proportion of cells in S phase within the LY341495 treated group decreased in a time-dependent manner. In the presence of differentiation medium containing LY341495, GSC differentiation was diverted into an astrocyte rather than neuronal phenotype. The growth rate and volume of tumours injected into nude mice was reduced in LY341495 treated mice compared with controls. Thus pharmacological blockade of mGlu3 receptor signalling pathway significantly inhibits the growth and proliferation of GSCs both in vitro and in vivo while promoting differentiation to astrocytes. These results further implicate mGlu3 in the biology of glioma and as a target for continued research.

Abstract
The fabrication of a highly ordered novel ZnO/Si nano-heterojuntion array is introduced. ZnO seed layer is first deposited on the Si (P<111>) surface. The nucleation sites are then defined by patterning the surface through focused ion beam (FIB) system. The ZnO nanorods are grown on the nucleation sites through hydrothermal process. The whole fabrication process is simple, facile and offers direct control of the space, length and aspect ratio of the array. It is found that ZnO/Si nanojunctions show an improved interface when subjected to heat treatment. The recrystallization of ZnO and the tensile lattice strain of Si developed during the heating process contribute the enhancement of their photoresponses to white light. The photoluminescence (PL) measurement result of nano-heterojunction arrays with different parameters is discussed.

Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widely used material known to cause adverse effects in humans and other mammals. To date, little is known about the global metabolomic alterations caused by BPA using urinalysis. Sprague-Dawley rats were orally administrated BPA at the levels of 0, 0.5 μg/kg/day and 50 mg/kg/day covering a low dose and a reference dose for 8 weeks. We conducted a capillary electrophoresis in tandem with electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry based nontargeted metabolomic analysis using rat urine. To verify the metabolic alteration at both low and high doses, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blotting were further conducted to analyze hepatic expression of methionine adenosyltransferase Iα (Mat1a) and methionine adenosyltransferase IIα (Mat2a). Hepatic S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) was also analyzed. A total of 199 metabolites were profiled. Statistical analysis and pathway mapping indicated that the most significant metabolic perturbations induced by BPA were the increased biotin and riboflavin excretion, increased synthesis of methylated products, elevated purine nucleotide catabolism, and increased flux through the choline metabolism pathway. We found significantly higher mRNA and protein levels of Mat1a and Mat2a, and significantly higher SAMe levels in rat liver at both low and high doses. These two genes encode critical isoenzymes that catalyze the formation of SAMe, the principal biological methyl donor involved in the choline metabolism. In conclusion, an elevated choline metabolism is underlying the mechanism of highly methylated environment and related metabolic alterations caused by BPA. The data of BPA-elevated accepted biomarkers of injury indicate that BPA induces DNA methylation damage and broad protein degradation, and the increased deleterious metabolites in choline pathway may also be involved in the toxicity of BPA.

Abstract
Brain tissue engineering has the potential to harness existing elements of neurogenesis within the adult brain to overcome a microenvironment that is otherwise inhibitory to regeneration, especially following severe tissue damage. This study investigates the ability of electrospun poly ε-caprolactone (PCL) to re-direct the migratory pathway of endogenous neuroblasts from the disrupted subventricular zone (SVZ). A small molecule non-peptide ligand (BDNF-mimetic) that mimicked the trophic properties of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was incorporated into electrospun PCL scaffolds to improve neuroblast survival and promote neuroblast migration towards the implant. PCL scaffolds were able to support neuroblast infiltration and migration along the implant tract. In the presence of the BDNF-mimetic, neuroblasts were able to migrate towards the implant via the parenchyma, and their persistence within the implants was prolonged. In addition, the BDNF-mimetic improved implant integration and increased local neuronal plasticity by increasing neurite sprouting at the tissue-implant interface. SMI32+ neurites were observed inside scaffolds at 21 days but not 8 days post implantation, indicating that at least some of the infiltrated neuroblasts had differentiated into neurons.

Abstract
Background. The purpose of the present study was to assess the feasibility of using miR-126 in the urine as a biomarker for diabetic nephropathy. Methods. miRNAs were extracted from the urine samples of T2DM patients with diabetic nephropathy (DN; n = 92), T2DM without DN (n = 86), and 85 healthy volunteers using quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (real-time polymerase chain reaction) analysis. Stability of urinary miR-126 and factors that affected the stability were assessed. A subgroup analysis was also carried out to compare the urinary miR-126 level in T2DM patients well controlled by the treatment versus those who were not well controlled. Results. Urinary miR-126 was stable when the urine samples were kept at room temperature for extended period of time, 4°C, -20°C, and -80°C for up to 12 hours or subjected to 10 freeze-and-thaw cycle. Urinary miR-126 was significantly higher in T2DM patients with DN (5.76 ± 0.33 versus 3.25 ± 0.45 in T2DM patients without DN). Successful treatment significantly reduced urinary miR-126 in T2DM patients with DN to 3.89 ± 0.52 (P < 0.05). Conclusion. miR-126 in the urine is stable and it could be used as a biomarker of DN and to monitor the treatment response.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the correlation between serum levels of Tumor Associated Materials (TAM) and clinicopathological parameters and prognosis in patients with esophageal cancer (EC). PATIENTS AND METHODS The levels of TAM were determined by chemical colorimetry in 100 EC patients and 100 healthy controls. RESULTS Serum TAM levels were significantly higher in patients with esophageal carcinoma than in the control group (p < 0.001). High levels of TAM were associated with tumor size (p = 0.004), tumor depth (p < 0.001), stage (p < 0.001), lymph node metastases (p < 0.001), tumor differentiation (p = 0.001), tumor respectability (p = 0.002) and disease progression (p < 0.001). The poor prognostic outcomes were correlated with an elevated level of TAM (p = 0.001). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed patients with increased levels of TAM after operation had an lower overall survival (p < 0.001) and disease-free survival (p < 0.001). In addition, multivariate Cox proportional hazard analyses revealed that TAM may be an independent factor affecting the overall survival and disease-free survival (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The detection of TAM could be used to screen for tumor and assess unfavorable prognosis in patients with EC.

Abstract
V L3 edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements performed on high quality BaVS3 single crystals reveal that the intra-t2g dd excitations close to the elastic peak are suppressed below the metal-insulator transition induced by the Peierls instability. The depletion of electronic states close to the Fermi level represents a direct observation of the opening of a charge gap inside the t2g manifold.

Abstract
We describe the introduction of various multi-drug resistant bacterial strains, including an NDM-1-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae, through a traveller returning from Egypt, where they had been admitted to a private hospital. All family members of the patient were colonised with one or more extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing strains. These findings emphasise the importance of adherence to isolation precautions for returning patients and suggest the need for inclusion of Enterobacteriaceae in admission screening.

Abstract
In this paper, we propose a novel framework for multidomain subspace deformation using node-wise corotational elasticity. With the proper construction of subspaces based on the knowledge of the boundary deformation, we can use the Lagrange multiplier technique to impose coupling constraints at the boundary without overconstraining. In our deformation algorithm, the number of constraint equations to couple two neighboring domains is not related to the number of the nodes on the boundary but is the same as the number of the selected boundary deformation modes. The crack artifact is not present in our simulation result, and the domain decomposition with loops can be easily handled. Experimental results show that the single-core implementation of our algorithm can achieve real-time performance in simulating deformable objects with around quarter million tetrahedral elements.

Abstract
The purpose of this work was to preliminarily investigate the efficacy and safety of high-intensity focused ultrasound treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma and hypersplenism. Nine patients with hepatocellular carcinoma complicated by hypersplenism (5 male and 4 female; median age, 56 years; range, 51-66 years) were treated with ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound. Complications were recorded. Laboratory examination and magnetic resonance imaging were used to evaluate the efficacy. After high-intensity focused ultrasound treatment, mean spleen ablation ± SD of 28.76% ± 6.1% was discovered; meanwhile, the white blood cell count, platelet count, and liver function of the patients were substantially improved during the follow-up period. In addition, symptoms such as epistaxis and gingival bleeding were ameliorated or even eliminated, and the quality of life was improved. Follow-up imaging showed a nonperfused volume in the spleen and an absence of a tumor blood supply at the treated lesions in the liver. For the first time to our knowledge, high-intensity focused ultrasound ablation was used to treat hepatocellular carcinoma complicated by hypersplenism. High-intensity focused ultrasound may be an effective and safe alternative for treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma complicated by hypersplenism, but further studies are necessary to clarify the mechanisms.

Abstract
Pot experiments were carried out to investigate the influence of different iron (Fe) levels (0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 micromol.L-1) on the plant growth, activities of antioxidant enzymes, accumulation and chemical forms of cadmium (Cd) in tomato when exposed to Cd (10 mg.kg-1). The results showed that dry weights of fruit, roots, stem, leaf, and plant, and concentration and accumulation of Cd significantly differed between the two varieties of tomato tested. Dry weights of fruit, roots, stem, leaf, and plant increased in the presence of Fe. Activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) of root in both varieties, and activities of catalase (CAT) of root in Yufenl09 deceased at first, and then increased with increasing levels of Fe, but activities of peroxidase (POD) of root in both varieties and activities of CAT of root in 4641 increased at first, and then reduced with increasing levels of Fe. Chemical forms of Cd in fruit of tomato were in the order of FR > FHCl > FE > FNaCl > FHAC > FW. All chemical forms of Cd obviously decreased after the application of adequate Fe compared to the control, while FHcI and FR of 4641, and the total extractable Cd, FE, FNaCl and FR of Yufenl09 increased at 400 micromol.L-1Fe treatment. Cadmium accumulations of tomato were in the order of leaf > stew > fruit > roots. Cadmium concentration in leaf, stem, roots and fruit of both varieties decreased by 7. 1% -25.3% , 30. 8% -50. 4% , 13.0% -45. 1% and 2.8% -11.7% in the presence of Fe when exposed to Cd, and the Cd concentration of fruit and Cd accumulations in plant were in the order of 4641 < Yufenl09 in the presence or absence of Fe.
