Abstract
AIMS The ability of dietary enrichment with monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA), n-3 or n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) to reverse glucose intolerance and vascular dysfunction resulting from excessive dietary saturated fatty acids is not resolved. We hypothesized that partial replacement of dietary saturated fats with n-3 PUFA-enriched menhaden oil (MO) would provide greater improvement in glucose tolerance and vascular function compared to n-6 enriched safflower oil (SO) or MUFA-enriched olive oil (OO). METHODS We fed mice a high saturated fat diet (HF) (60% kcal from lard) for 12 weeks before substituting half the lard with MO, SO or OO for an additional 4 weeks. At the end of 4 weeks, we assessed glucose tolerance, insulin signalling and reactivity of isolated pressurized gracilis arteries. RESULTS After 12 weeks of saturated fat diet, body weights were elevated and glucose tolerance was abnormal compared to mice on control diet (13% kcal lard). Diet substituted with MO restored basal glucose levels, glucose tolerance and indices of insulin signalling (phosphorylated Akt) to normal, whereas restoration was limited for SO and OO substitutions. Although dilation to acetylcholine was reduced in arteries from mice on HF, OO and SO diets compared to normal diet, dilation to acetylcholine was fully restored and constriction to phenylephrine was reduced in MO-fed mice compared to normal. CONCLUSION We conclude that short-term enrichment of an ongoing high fat diet with n-3 PUFA rich MO, but not MUFA rich OO or n-6 PUFA rich SO, reverses glucose tolerance, insulin signalling and vascular dysfunction.

Abstract
In this paper, a new voltammetric method for the determination of phenol is described. In pH 8.00 phosphate buffer and in the presence of long-chain cationic surfactant-cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-phenol has a very sensitive oxidation peak at 0.47 V (vs. SCE) on the Nafion-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The experimental parameters, such as supporting electrolyte and pH values, amounts of Nafion, varieties and concentration of surfactants, accumulation potential and time, as well as scan rate were optimized. The peak current is linear with the concentration of phenol in the range from 8x10(-9) to 1x10(-5) M, and the detection limit is 1x10(-9) M after being accumulated at -0.50 V (vs. SCE) for 3 min. Trace levels of phenol in water samples were determined by using this voltammetric method, the average recovery was calculated to be 99.56%.

Abstract
We report on the directed synthesis of germanium oxide (GeO(x)) nanowires (NWs) by locally catalyzed thermal oxidation of aligned arrays of gold catalyst-tipped germanium NWs. During oxygen anneals conducted above the Au-Ge binary eutectic temperature (T > 361 °C), one-dimensional oxidation of as-grown Ge NWs occurs by diffusion of Ge through the Au-Ge catalyst droplet, in the presence of an oxygen containing ambient. Elongated GeO(x) wires grow from the liquid catalyst tip, consuming the adjoining Ge NWs as they grow. The oxide NWs' diameter is dictated by the catalyst diameter and their alignment generally parallels that of the growth direction of the initial Ge NWs. Growth rate comparisons reveal a substantial oxidation rate enhancement in the presence of the Au catalyst. Statistical analysis of GeO(x) nanowire growth by ex situ transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy suggests a transition from an initial, diameter-dependent kinetic regime, to diameter-independent wire growth. This behavior suggests the existence of an incubation time for GeO(x) NW nucleation at the start of vapor-liquid-solid oxidation.

Abstract
Previous studies have demonstrated that the pharmacokinetic profile of erythromycin, a probe for CYP3A4 activity, is affected by inhibitors or inducers of hepatic solute carriers. We hypothesized that these interactions are mediated by OATP1B1 (gene symbol, SLCO1B1), a polypeptide expressed on the basolateral surface of hepatocytes. Using stably transfected Flp-In T-Rex293 cells, erythromycin was found to be a substrate for OATP1B1*1A (wild type) with a Michaelis-Menten constant of ~13 µmol/l, and that its transport was reduced by ~50% in cells expressing OATP1B1*5 (V174A). Deficiency of the ortholog transporter Oatp1b2 in mice was associated with a 52% decrease in the metabolic rate of erythromycin (P = 0.000043). In line with these observations, in humans the c.521T>C variant in SLCO1B1 (rs4149056), encoding OATP1B1*5, was associated with a decline in erythromycin metabolism (P = 0.0072). These results suggest that impairment of OATP1B1 function can alter erythromycin metabolism, independent of changes in CYP3A4 activity.

Abstract
Transplant arteriosclerosis is a leading cause of late allograft loss. Medial smooth muscle cell (SMC) apoptosis is considered to be an important event in transplant arteriosclerosis. However, the precise contribution of medial SMC apoptosis to transplant arteriosclerosis and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We transferred wild-type p53 to induce apoptosis of cultured SMCs. We found that apoptosis induces the production of SDF-1α from apoptotic and neighboring viable cells, resulting in increased SDF-1α in the culture media. Conditioned media from Ltv-p53-transferred SMCs activated PI3K/Akt/mTOR and MAPK/Erk signaling in a SDF-1α-dependent manner and thereby promoted mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) migration and proliferation. In a rat aorta transplantation model, lentivirus-mediated BclxL transfer selectively inhibits medial SMC apoptosis in aortic allografts, resulting in a remarkable decrease of SDF-1α both in allograft media and in blood plasma, associated with diminished recruitment of CD90(+)CD105(+) double-positive cells and impaired neointimal formation. Systemic administration of rapamycin or PD98059 also attenuated MSC recruitment and neointimal formation in the aortic allografts. These results suggest that medial SMC apoptosis is critical for the development of transplant arteriosclerosis through inducing SDF-1α production and that MSC recruitment represents a major component of vascular remodeling, constituting a relevant target and mechanism for therapeutic interventions.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of our study was to retrospectively assess imaging features of computed tomography (CT) and clinical characteristics of children with solid pseudopapillary tumours (SPTs) of the pancreas in comparison with those of SPTs in adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS CT images and clinical data of 86 patients with histopathologically proven SPTs were reviewed. Eighteen patients were classified as children (≤18 years old), and 68 were classified as adults (>18 years old) according to age at diagnosis. Statistical analysis was performed using the χ (2) test and the Student's t test. RESULTS Eighteen patients (15 girls and three boys) were children, with an average age of 15.1 years at operation. Abdominal pain or discomfort was the most common manifestation in children (66.7%). Mean tumour size in children was significantly larger than in adults (9.1 vs. 5.7 cm; p=0.001). Except for tumour size, no significant statistical difference was observed in clinical factors or imaging features between SPTs in children and adults. CONCLUSIONS Ours is the largest single-centre study to demonstrate the features of pancreatic SPT in children. SPT diagnosis should always be considered when a large pancreatic mass with typical imaging is found in a child, especially in adolescent girls.

Abstract
An amalgamated concept of Internet of m-health Things (m-IoT) has been introduced recently and defined as a new concept that matches the functionalities of m-health and IoT for a new and innovative future (4G health) applications. It is well know that diabetes is a major chronic disease problem worldwide with major economic and social impact. To-date there have not been any studies that address the potential of m-IoT for non-invasive glucose level sensing with advanced opto-physiological assessment technique and diabetes management. In this paper we address the potential benefits of using m-IoT in non-invasive glucose level sensing and the potential m-IoT based architecture for diabetes management. We expect to achieve intelligent identification and management in a heterogeneous connectivity environment from the mobile healthcare perspective. Furthermore this technology will enable new communication connectivity routes between mobile patients and care services through innovative IP based networking architectures.

Abstract
AIM Minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy (MIVAT) and endoscopic thyroidectomy through areola (ETA) access are among the endoscopic approaches for thyroidectomy that have been perfected, but reports comparing the two are lacking. This study evaluated the safety, postoperative recovery, and patient satisfaction of MIVAT compared with ETA. METHODS This study included 119 patients undergoing MIVAT and 42 patients undergoing ETA from January 2006 to October 2009. Operative time, complications, postoperative recovery, cosmetic result, and patient satisfaction were analyzed. RESULTS The ETA group had a higher percentage of women (100% vs. 78.2%, P<0.05) and was younger (33.5 vs. 39 years, P<0.05). Thyroid volume (24.5 vs. 14.5 mL, P<0.001) and nodular diameter (26 vs. 22 mm, P<0.05) were larger in ETA group. The MIVAT group had a shorter operative time (28.2 vs. 112.8 minutes) and a lower rate of intraoperative (7.2 vs. 21.2 mL) and postoperative (0 vs. 80 mL, P<0.0001) blood loss. Rates of conversion and complications were similar. Postoperative pain at 12 hours was 1.9 in MIVAT vs. 3.1 in ETA (P<0.0001). Hospitalization was 1 day in the MIVAT group vs. 3.5 days in ETA (P<0.0001). Patient satisfaction was similar. CONCLUSION MIVAT and ETA showed similar results for safety, although ETA might be considered more invasive than MIVAT. Patients of both groups were equally satisfied with the cosmetic result. Differently from ETA, MIVAT allows total thyroidectomy to be performed also for malignant diseases. Although different, the two approaches were safe and reliable and both are valid options. Choice might depend on the surgeon's preference, thyroid size, type of disease, and the patient's expectation about cosmesis.
