Abstract
BACKGROUND Alterations in circulating levels of pro- and antiangiogenic factors have been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Heparin is routinely administered to pregnant women, but without clear knowledge of its impact on these factors. METHODS AND RESULTS We conducted a longitudinal study of 42 pregnant women. Twenty-one women received prophylactic heparin anticoagulation, and 21 healthy pregnant women served as controls. Compared with gestational age-matched controls, heparin treatment was associated with increased circulating levels of soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) in the third trimester (P<0.05), in the absence of preeclampsia, placental abruption, or fetal growth restriction. Heparin had no effect on circulating levels of vascular endothelial growth factor, placenta growth factor, or soluble endoglin as assessed by ELISA. In vitro, low-molecular weight and unfractionated heparins stimulated sFlt-1 release from placental villous explants, in a dose- and time-dependent manner. This effect was not due to placental apoptosis, necrosis, alteration in protein secretion, or increased transcription. Western blot analysis demonstrated that heparin induced shedding of the N-terminus of Flt-1 both in vivo and in vitro as indicated by a predominant band of 100-112 kDa. By using an in vitro angiogenesis assay, we demonstrated that serum of heparin-treated cases inhibited both basal and vascular endothelial growth factor-induced capillary-like tube formation. CONCLUSIONS Heparin likely increases the maternal sFlt-1 through shedding of the extracellular domain of Flt-1 receptor. Our results imply that upregulation of circulating sFlt-1 immunoreactivity in pregnancy is not always associated with adverse outcomes, and that heparin's protective effects, if any, cannot be explained by promotion of angiogenesis.

Abstract
We present results of a study of the decay J/ψ → ωηπ+ π- using a sample of (225.2 ± 2.8) × 10(6) J/ψ events collected by the BESIII detector, and report the observation of a new process J/ψ → ωX(1870) with a statistical significance of 7.2σ, in which X(1870) decays to a(0)(±)(980)π±. Fitting to ηπ+ π- mass spectrum yields a mass M = 1877.3 ± 6.3(stat)(-7.4)(+3.4)(syst) MeV/c(2), a width Γ = 57 ± 12(stat)(-4)(+19)(syst) MeV/c(2), and a product branching fraction B(J/ψ → ωX) × B(X→a(0)(±)(980)π±) × B(a(0) (±)(980) → ηπ±) = [1.50 ± 0.26(stat)(-0.36)(+0.72) (syst)] × 10(-4). Signals for J/ψ → ωf(1)(1285) and J/ψ → ω η(1405) are also clearly observed and measured.

Abstract
Background Intra-amniotic infection and/or inflammation (IAI) are important causes of preterm birth and early-onset neonatal sepsis (EONS). A prompt and accurate diagnosis of EONS is critical for improved neonatal outcomes. We sought to explore the cord blood proteome and identify biomarkers and functional protein networks characterizing EONS in preterm newborns. Methodology/Principal Findings We studied a prospective cohort of 180 premature newborns delivered May 2004-September 2009. A proteomics discovery phase employing two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE) and mass spectrometry identified 19 differentially-expressed proteins in cord blood of newborns with culture-confirmed EONS (n = 3) versus GA-matched controls (n = 3). Ontological classifications of the proteins included transfer/carrier, immunity/defense, protease/extracellular matrix. The 1st-level external validation conducted in the remaining 174 samples confirmed elevated haptoglobin and haptoglobin-related protein immunoreactivity (Hp&HpRP) in newborns with EONS (presumed and culture-confirmed) independent of GA at birth and birthweight (P<0.001). Western blot concurred in determining that EONS babies had conspicuous Hp&HpRP bands in cord blood (“switch-on pattern”) as opposed to non-EONS newborns who had near-absent “switch-off pattern” (P<0.001). Fetal Hp phenotype independently impacted Hp&HpRP. A Bayesian latent-class analysis (LCA) was further used for unbiased classification of all 180 cases based on probability of “antenatal IAI exposure” as latent variable. This was then subjected to 2nd-level validation against indicators of adverse short-term neonatal outcome. The optimal LCA algorithm combined Hp&HpRP switch pattern (most input), interleukin-6 and neonatal hematological indices yielding two non-overlapping newborn clusters with low (≤20%) versus high (≥70%) probability of IAI exposure. This approach reclassified ∼30% of clinical EONS diagnoses lowering the number needed to harm and increasing the odds ratios for several adverse outcomes including intra-ventricular hemorrhage. Conclusions/Significance Antenatal exposure to IAI results in precocious switch-on of Hp&HpRP expression. As EONS biomarker, cord blood Hp&HpRP has potential to improve the selection of newborns for prompt and targeted treatment at birth.

Abstract
We report an efficiency-enhanced mid-infrared generation via optical parametric down conversion. A tandem periodically-poled MgO-doped stoichiometric lithium tantalate crystal is used to realize on-chip generation and amplification of mid-infrared radiation inside an optical parametric oscillator cavity. We achieved 21.2% conversion efficiency (24% slope efficiency), which is among the highest efficiencies for the pump-to-mid-infrared conversion, with 1064 nm Nd class laser pump. The maximum average output power at 3.87 μm reached 635 mW with a 3.0 W pump.

Abstract
Using (106±4)×10⁻⁶ ψ(3686) events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII e⁺e⁻ collider, we present the first measurement of decays of χ(c1) to vector meson pairs φφ, ωω, and ωφ. The branching fractions are measured to be (4.4±0.3±0.5)×10⁻⁴, (6.0±0.3±0.7)×10⁻⁴, and (2.2±0.6±0.2)×10⁻⁵, for χ(c1)→φφ, ωω, and ωφ, respectively, which indicates that the hadron helicity selection rule is significantly violated in χ(cJ) decays. In addition, the measurement of χ(cJ)→ωφ provides the first indication of the rate of doubly OZI-suppressed χ(cJ) decay. Finally, we present improved measurements for the branching fractions of χ(c0) and χ(c2) to vector meson pairs.

Abstract
The NAD(+)-dependent deacetylase, sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), has been recently been suspected to have a role in tumorigenesis. We investigated the expression of SIRT1 in pancreatic cancer and the effect of SIRT1-targeted RNA interference (RNAi) on cell proliferation and tumor formation in a pancreatic cancer cell line, PANC1. The expression of SIRT1 was investigated in 49 specimens of pancreatic cancer and adjacent normal pancreatic tissues. SIRT1 was overexpressed in pancreatic cancer tissues at both the mRNA and protein levels, with increased SIRT1 positivity associated with tumors from patients over 60 years old, tumors larger than 4 cm, higher TNM (extent of tumor (T), the extent of spread to lymph nodes (N), and presence of distant metastasis (M)) stage or the presence of lymph node or hepatic metastases. The PANC-1 was stably transfected with a SIRT1 small hairpin RNA (shRNA) expression plasmid and compared with untransfected and PANC-1-negative RNAi cells. Proliferation of PANC-1-SIRT1-RNAi cells was significantly reduced, accompanied by increased rates of apoptosis, G1 arrest and senescence. Furthermore, FOXO3a expression was markedly upregulated in PANC-1-SIRT1-RNAi cells, but no significant difference in p53 expression was observed. The invasive ability of PANC-1-SIRT1-RNAi cells was markedly reduced in vitro, which was linked to increased E-cadherin and reduced-MMP expression. Additionally, PANC-1-SIRT1-RNAi cells had a significantly reduced capacity to form tumors in vivo compared with untransfected and PANC-1-negative RNAi cells. These results suggest that SIRT1 may promote cell proliferation and tumor formation in pancreatic cancer, and downregulation of SIRT1 using shRNA could provide a novel therapeutic treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We sought to characterize serum angiogenic factor profile of women with complete placenta previa and determine if invasive trophoblast differentiation characteristic of accreta, increta, or percreta shares features of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. STUDY DESIGN We analyzed gestational age-matched serum samples from 90 pregnant women with either complete placenta previa (n = 45) or uncomplicated pregnancies (n = 45). Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), placental growth factor, and soluble form of fms-like-tyrosine-kinase-1 were immunoassayed. VEGF and phosphotyrosine immunoreactivity was surveyed in histological specimens relative to expression of vimentin and cytokeratin-7. RESULTS Women with previa and invasive placentation (accreta, n = 5; increta, n = 6; percreta, n = 2) had lower systemic VEGF (invasive previa: median 0.8 [0.02-3.4] vs control 6.5 [2.7-10.5] pg/mL, P = .02). VEGF and phosphotyrosine immunostaining predominated in the invasive extravillous trophoblasts that coexpressed vimentin and cytokeratin-7, an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition feature and tumorlike cell phenotype. CONCLUSION Lower systemic free VEGF and a switch of the interstitial extravillous trophoblasts to a metastable cell phenotype characterize placenta previa with excessive myometrial invasion.

Abstract
CONTEXT Activation of the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) mediates cellular injury. Soluble forms of RAGE [soluble RAGE (sRAGE), endogenous secretory (esRAGE)] bind RAGE ligands, thereby preventing downstream signaling and damage. OBJECTIVES The objective of the study was to characterize the changes in maternal serum, amniotic fluid, and cord blood soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) during physiological gestation and to provide insight into mechanisms responsible for RAGE activation in preeclampsia. DESIGN AND SETTINGS This was a cross-sectional study at a tertiary university hospital. PATIENTS We studied 135 women in the following groups: nonpregnant controls (n = 16), healthy pregnant controls (n = 68), pregnant women with chronic hypertension (n = 13), or pregnant women with severe preeclampsia (sPE; n = 38). INTERVENTIONS AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES sRAGE and esRAGE levels were evaluated in vivo by ELISA in maternal serum, amniotic fluid, and cord blood and in vitro after stimulation of the amniochorion and placental explants with lipopolysaccharide or xanthine/xanthine oxidase. Placenta and amniochorion were immunostained for RAGE. Real-time quantitative PCR measured RAGE mRNA. RESULTS Pregnant women had significantly decreased serum sRAGE compared with nonpregnant subjects (P < 0.001). sPE women had higher serum and amniotic fluid sRAGE and esRAGE relative to those expected for gestational age (P < 0.001). Cord blood sRAGE remained unaffected by sPE. RAGE immunoreactivity and mRNA expression appeared elevated in the amniochorion of sPE women. Xanthine/xanthine oxidase (but not lipopolysaccharide) significantly up-regulated the release of sRAGE (P < 0.001) in the amniochorion explant system. CONCLUSIONS Fetal membranes are a rich source of sRAGE. Elevated maternal serum and amniotic fluid sRAGE and esRAGE, paralleled by increased RAGE expression in the amniochorion, suggest activation of this system in sPE.

Abstract
In this Letter, we demonstrate a nonlinear-mirror (NLM) mode-locked diode-pumped solid-state Nd:YVO4 laser operating at 1342 nm, in which the NLM comprises a periodically poled LiNbO3 crystal and a dichroic mirror. The self-starting threshold for cw mode locking is 1.5 W, which is significantly lower than that of saturable absorber mode locking. An average power of 1.52 W at 1342 nm is obtained under diode pump power of 10 W at 808 nm, with the slope efficiency being up to 16.8%. The pulse width and the repetition rate of the mode-locked laser output are about 9.5 ps and 101 MHz, respectively.

Abstract
ABSTRACTWe are reporting the first quantitative photoresponse characteristics of boron doped hot-filament CVD (HFCVD) diamond based Schottky diodes using semi-transparent aluminum contacts in the spectral range of 300–1050 nm. Quantum efficiencies, obtained without correction for surface reflection in the visible and near UV region, were between 5 % and 10% when the diodes were unbiased. Effect of reverse bias on the photoresponse was investigated at selected photon energies. Reverse biased diodes exhibit increasing photoresponse and ultimately saturation. Quantum efficiency as high as 30% was also obtained at 500 nm, when a reverse bias of over I volt was applied. The photoresponse mechanism of CVD diamond Schottky diodes is also discussed. A Schottky barrier height of 1.15 ± 0.02 eV for Al-HFCVD diamond contacts was determined using the d.c. photoelectric method.

Abstract
With a sample of (225.2±2.8)×10(6) J/ψ events registered in the BESIII detector, J/ψ→γπ(+)π(-)η(') is studied using two η(') decay modes: η(')→π(+)π(-)η and η(')→γρ(0). The X(1835), which was previously observed by BESII, is confirmed with a statistical significance that is larger than 20σ. In addition, in the π(+)π(-)η(') invariant-mass spectrum, the X(2120) and the X(2370), are observed with statistical significances larger than 7.2σ and 6.4σ, respectively. For the X(1835), the angular distribution of the radiative photon is consistent with expectations for a pseudoscalar.

Abstract
Classic IL-6 signaling is conditioned by the transmembrane receptor (IL-6R) and homodimerization of gp130. During trans-signaling, IL-6 binds to soluble IL-6R (sIL-6R), enabling activation of cells expressing solely gp130. Soluble gp130 (sgp130) selectively inhibits IL-6 trans-signaling. To characterize amniotic fluid (AF) IL-6 trans-signaling molecules (IL-6, sIL-6R, sgp130) in normal gestations and pregnancies complicated by intra-amniotic inflammation (IAI), we studied 301 women during second trimester (n = 39), third trimester (n = 40), and preterm labor with intact (n = 131, 85 negative IAI and 46 positive IAI) or preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM; n = 91, 61 negative IAI and 30 positive IAI). ELISA, Western blotting, and real-time RT-PCR were used to investigate AF, placenta, and amniochorion for protein and mRNA expression of sIL-6R, sgp130, IL-6R, and gp130. Tissues were immunostained for IL-6R, gp130, CD15(+) (polymorphonuclear), and CD3(+) (T cell) inflammatory cells. The ability of sIL-6R and sgp130 to modulate basal and LPS-stimulated release of amniochorion matrix metalloprotease-9 was tested ex vivo. We showed that in physiologic gestations, AF sgp130 decreases toward term. AF IL-6 and sIL-6R were increased in IAI, whereas sgp130 was decreased in PPROM. Our results suggested that fetal membranes are the probable source of AF sIL-6R and sgp130. Immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR revealed increased IL-6R and decreased gp130 expression in amniochorion of women with IAI. Ex vivo, sIL-6R and LPS augmented amniochorion matrix metalloprotease-9 release, whereas sgp130 opposed this effect. We conclude that IL-6 trans-signaling molecules are physiologic constituents of the AF regulated by gestational age and inflammation. PPROM likely involves functional loss of sgp130.

Abstract
We previously found that ginsenoside Rd (Rd), one of the major active ingredients in Panax ginseng, protects neuronal cells from hydrogen peroxide and oxygen-glucose deprivation, an in vitro model of cerebral ischemia. In this study, we examined the protective effects of Rd in an animal model of focal cerebral ischemia. Rats administered with Rd or vehicle were subjected to transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Rd (50 mg/kg) significantly reduced the infarct volume by 52.8%. This reduction of injury volume was associated with an improvement in neurological function and was sustained for at least 2 weeks after the induction of ischemia. To evaluate the underlying mechanisms of Rd against stroke, brain tissues were assayed for mitochondrial enzyme activities, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), energy metabolites, and apoptosis. Rd markedly protected mitochondria as indicated by preserved respiratory chain complex activities and aconitase activity, lowered mitochondrial hydrogen peroxide production, and hyperpolarized MMP. Microdialysis results illustrated that Rd significantly decreased the accumulation of lactate, the end product of anaerobic glycolysis, and increased pyruvate, the end product of aerobic glycolysis, hence inducing a lower lactate/pyruvate ratio. Additionally, in vitro studies further exhibited that Rd protected isolated mitochondria from calcium-induced damage by attenuating mitochondrial swelling, preserving MMP and decreasing ROS production. Moreover, Rd treatment reduced mitochondrial release of cytochrome c (CytoC) and apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF), thereby minimizing mitochondria-mediated apoptosis following ischemia. In conclusion, these findings demonstrated that Rd exerts neuroprotective effects in transient focal ischemia, which may involve an integrated process of the mitochondrial protection, energy restoration and inhibition of apoptosis.

Abstract
We propose a universal and practical scheme to realize polarization-free second-order nonlinear frequency-conversion processes, including sum-frequency generation, difference-frequency generation, and optical parametric amplification. This scheme is based on the optical superlattice with a noncritical phase-matching condition, which is suitable for optical integration. A chirped dual-period structure is proposed to ensure the efficiency and stability of the conversions.

Abstract
The decays ψ'→γπ(0), γη and γη' are studied using data collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII e(+)e(-) collider. The processes ψ'→γπ(0) and ψ'→γη are observed for the first time with signal significances of 4.6σ and 4.3σ, respectively. The branching fractions are determined to be B(ψ'→γπ(0))=(1.58±0.40±0.13)×10(-6), B(ψ'→γη)=(1.38±0.48±0.09)×10(-6), and B(ψ'→γη')=(126±3±8)×10(-6), where the first errors are statistical and the second ones systematic.

Abstract
Abstract
Background and objectives: Analysis of gene expression has identified various molecular subtypes. These molecular subtypes defined by immunohistochemistry expression of estrogen receptor (ER) or progesterone receptor (PR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (Her2) : luminal A, luminal B, basal cell-like and HER2-expresing. This study evaluates clinical and pathologic features and survival of the four molecular subtypes in premenopausal and postmenopausal women from northeast China.
Methods: A retrospective analysis of 1214 women diagnosed with breast cancer from 2000 to 2007 in Breast Surgery Department, First Hospital of Jilin University. Four molecular breast cancer subtypes defined as: luminal A (ER+ and/or PR+, HER2-), luminal B (ER+ and/or PR+, HER2+), basal-like (ER-, PR-, HER2-), and HER2-expresing, (ER-, PR-, and HER2+). We examined the prevalence of breast cancer subtypes and analyzed the associations with patient clinicopathologic features: age, menopausal status, tumor size, lymph node status, stage of cancer at diagnosis, histological characteristics, and breast cancer-specific survival.
Results: Among the all cases, the luminal A subtype was the most prevalent in our study sample (56.0%) compared with basal -like (18.5%), luminal B (13.7%), and HER2-expresing subtypes (11.8%). The four molecular subtypes differed significantly by menopausal status (P=0.011), age (P<0.001) and lymph node status (P<0.001). Luminal A subtype was more likely to with Stage II breast cancer (P<0.001) and most present with size of 2.1-5 cm (P<0.001). The luminal B and the HER2-expresing subtypes presented an increased association with more aggressive clinical course when compared with others subtypes. The estimated median follow-up period for all subjects was 54 months (range, 1 month to 120 months). The 8-year overall survival for all patients was 81.3% (95%CI, 79.4-83.7) and disease-free survival was 77.8% (95% CI, 75.4-79.9). The Kaplan-Meier curve showed breast cancer-specific survival differed significantly among the molecular subtypes (P < 0.03), with the luminal B and HER2-expresing subtypes having the poorest outcome.
Conclusion: Luminal A breast tumor appeared the better outcome than the others three subtypes and the shortest survival was HER2-expresing subtype. The poor clinical outcomes of luminal B subtype with women from northeast China were different from those of Western women could contribute to the poor prognosis of breast cancer observed in this cohort of patients and some of them couldn't accept molecular targeted therapy with trastuzumab by poor economic situations.
