[Experimental study on oral candidiasis]

The successful rate in producing oral candidiasis of the animal is not high. By utilizing: (1) fresh cell-line isolated from the oral cavity of the patient suffering from oral candidiasis and passing twice in rabbits and re-isolated to increase its toxicity; and (2) expanding the area of examination, the authors successfully (100%) produced oral candidiasis in Wistar rats. The specimens are studied histologically on its nature of whether it is a precancerous lesion or not.

Use of glutaraldehyde solution in the treatment of acute aortic dissections

We report on a promising method for toughening and strengthening the fragile aortic wall that involves the direct application of a 25% glutaraldehyde solution and that has proved to be both technically simple and safe. The operation was successfully employed in 5 patients with acute aortic dissections, 3 with a Stanford type A and 2 with a type B dissection. Histologic examination of the glutaraldehyde-treated portions of the aortic wall showed no detectable difference between them and the sections of untreated aortic wall. All patients survived the operation. The duration of follow-up ranged from 9 to 31 months (mean, 14.0 months). All 5 patients were in good condition at the time of the last follow-up. The preliminary results indicate that the use of a 25% glutaraldehyde solution to strengthen the aortic wall during operations for the repair of acute aortic dissections, regardless of whether they are type A or type B, may reduce the incidence of catastrophic perioperative bleeding and promote favorable results.

[Postpartum adjustment of women who were home during the "traditional Chinese one month postpartum period of confinement" and those who were in maternity care centers]

The purpose of this study was to explore the difference in postpartum adjustment between women who were at home for there "doing the month" and those who stayed in a maternity care center. A repeated measures design was conducted, with data collected at 1 and 4 weeks postpartum. A total of 120 postpartum women participated in this study. Data were analyzed by factor analysis to determine the relationships within categories of postpartum strssors and depression. Then, the data were analyzed by 2 x 2 repeated measure MANOVA to determine the variations among groups and time. The results indicated that women who were in maternity centers for the "doing the month" perceived significantly higher stress than did the home group, and that women perceived higher stress at 4 weeks postpartum than at 1 week postpartum. Factor analysis of the data defined four categories of postpartum stress. It was found that women at maternity care centers perceived significantly higher stress from factors named, "stress from lacking of support system" and "stress from identifying maternal role". In addition, women doing the month at maternity care centers showed significantly higher depression level than women doing the month at home. However, there is no significant difference in postpartum stress and postpartum depression between time 1 (1 week postpartum) and time 2 (4 weeks postpartum).

Daidzein is a more bioavailable soymilk isoflavone than is genistein in adult women

Soybean isoflavones are proposed to be anticarcinogenic, but their effective doses have not been established. To study the bioavailability of soybean isoflavones for humans, 12 young adult women received single doses of 0.7, 1.3 and 2.0 mg isoflavones/kg body wt in soybean milk as part of a liquid diet. Plasma, urine and fecal isoflavones were measured by reverse-phase HPLC. Average 24-h urinary recoveries of daidzein and genistein were approximately 21% and 9%, respectively, at all three doses. Urinary recovery of daidzein was significantly greater than that of genistein (P < 0.001). Total fecal excretion of isoflavones was only 1-2% of the ingested amount. Plasma total isoflavone concentration was significantly increased to 4.4 +/- 2.5 mumol/L at 6.5 h after a dose of 2.0 mg/kg. The plasma concentrations of daidzein and genisten were approximately equal. Twenty-four hours after dosing, both plasma and urine isoflavone concentrations were nearly nil. Although soybean milk isoflavones seem to be 85% degraded in the intestine, the bioavailability, especially of daidzein, may be sufficient to exert some health-protective effects.

Clinical significance of elevated serum soluble interleukin-2 receptor in gastric cancer

This is China's pilot study in the assessment of the diagnostic value of serum soluble IL-2 receptor (sIL-2R) in gastric cancer. We measured its level by ELISA method in 45 patients with gastric cancer (without metastasis: 32; with metastasis: 5; recurrence: 8) 27 gastric ulcer, 27 superficial gastritis and 44 healthy controls. The mean-serum sIL-2R levels were significantly elevated in cancer patients, those with metastasis showed even higher levels than those without metastasis. These results suggested that sIL-2R can be used as a marker of host biological response in gastric cancer patients as well as a tumor marker for the diagnosis of the disease.

Sympatholytic effect of captopril in regression of cardiovascular remodeling in spontaneously hypertensive rats

Fifty-eight spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) at 12 wk of age were divided into 3 groups: A) captopril (Cap) 20 mg.kg-1.d-1; B) clonidine (Clo) 30 micrograms.kg-1.d-1; C) Clo 30 micrograms.kg-1.d-1 + Cap 20 mg.kg-1.d-1 orally for 24 wk. Concomitant administration of Cap and Clo did not result in more lowering of the systolic blood pressure (SBP) than that by Cap alone. Regression of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) were remarkable in Groups A and C, but not to the extent in that of WKY. No significant difference between these two groups was found. Cap alone resulted in a greater decrease of myocardial norepinephrine (NE) than that of Groups B and C. The wall/lumen ratio and the number of smooth muscle cell (SMC) layers of renal artery decreased in Groups A and C, but little difference was found between them. It seemed that combined blockade of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone (RAA) system and sympathetic nervous system (SNS) did not produce more significant BP reduction and reversal of cardiovascular remodeling than Cap alone did. The sympathetic inhibitory effect of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) was not enhanced by sympatholytic treatment.

[Changes in plasma endothelin level in pregnancy-induced hypertension with relation to its severity]

Plasma endothelin (ET) level during pregnancy and postpartum period were measured in 57 women including 41 cases of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) by radioimmunoassay (RIA), and ET in their fetal cord vessels were determined as well. The results showed that ET level of normal pregnant women was significantly higher than that of normal non-pregnant controls. ET level in PIH patients was significantly higher than that of the normal pregnant women and was positively related to the severity of PIH, and returned to non-pregnant status in postpartum period. It indicated that ET might play an important role in the pathogenesis of PIH.

Isolation of a mitomycin-resistant human lung adenocarcinoma cell subline to investigate the modulation by sodium butyrate of cell growth and drug resistance

We developed a mitomycin C (MMC)-resistant human lung adenocarcinoma cell subline, SPC-A1/DM4, from cloned SPC-A1/D13 parent cells by 1 h exposures to escalating concentrations of the drug over 17 months. A 5.9-fold resistance to MMC and a 3.8-fold cross-resistance to cisplatin were present in resistant cells compared with parent cells. This phenotype was stable in the absence of drug exposure for at least 6 months. Sodium butyrate (NaBu), a widely used differentiating agent, was shown to inhibit cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner, with the cytostatic concentration of 2 mM. This NaBu-induced growth inhibition was reversible. However, SPC-A1/DM4 cells, after recovery from the cytostasis induced by 2 days treatment with 2 mM NaBu, became 2-fold more sensitive to MMC than the cells not exposed to the agent. Meanwhile, the cisplatin response of these treated cells reached a level comparable to the parent cells. This modulation by NaBu of drug resistance could be retained for at least 1 month. Treatment with 2 mM NaBu for 2 days caused inhibition of DNA synthesis and accumulation of cells in the G1 and G2/M-phases of the cell cycle. Correlated with these were a marked increase of protein content in these cell subpopulations and an enhanced RNA synthesis. In addition, NaBu-treated cells acquired development of endoplasmic reticulum and accumulated lipid droplets. These morphological alterations were accompanied by a significant decrease in the ratio of nuclear to cytoplasmic areas. These findings suggest that NaBu is potentially useful in the treatment of drug-resistant non-small cell lung cancer. Information about the NaBu-induced phenotypic alterations may offer a clue to the understanding of its long-term effect on drug resistance.

Peritoneal implant elimination during cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer: impact on survival

A case-control study was performed to evaluate the potential benefit of peritoneal and serosal implant elimination (PIE) during primary cytoreductive surgery for patients with Stage IIIC epithelial ovarian cancer. Peritoneal implant excision and/or ablation was accomplished with electrocautery, CO2 laser, sharp dissection, argon beam coagulator, and cavitron ultrasonic surgical aspirator. Three groups of patients were compared: Group A (7 patients); macroscopically disease-free after cytoreduction without needing PIE; Group B (26 patients); macroscopically disease-free after cytoreduction, including PIE; Group C (34 patients); macroscopic disease < or = 1 cm remaining exclusively on peritoneal surfaces with PIE not attempted. Each group had statistically equivalent mean ages, estimated blood loss, extent of disease, and variety of cytoreductive operations performed. Group B had a longer mean operating time than that of A or C (4.0 vs 2.8 hr P = 0.002). No serious morbidity occurred from PIE. Comparison of survival by log rank analysis and Cox proportional hazards regression shows a survival advantage for patients rendered free of macroscopic peritoneal implants (Group B vs Group C; P = 0.003). The result suggests that complete elimination of all visible peritoneal metastases might be of benefit during surgical cytoreduction for ovarian cancer if this renders the patient macroscopically disease-free. We also suggest the need of a randomized, prospective study to clarify the clinical role of PIE.

Suppressed tyrosine hydroxylase gene expression in the tuberoinfundibular dopaminergic system during lactation

Suckling-induced PRL secretion is regulated in part by a reduction in tuberoinfundibular dopamine (TIDA) neuronal activity. We have examined the effects of suckling on TIDA activity in the arcuate nucleus by measuring changes in gene expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate-limiting enzyme in catecholamine synthesis. TH gene expression was assessed by performing in situ hybridization, using a 35S-labeled antisense riboprobe for quantitating TH mRNA and analyzing grain density with the aid of an Optimas Bioscan image analysis system. Lactating rats suckled by eight pups were studied on postpartum day 10, and diestrous day 1 rats were used as controls. The results showed that lactation suppressed TH mRNA content throughout the arcuate nucleus to about 10% of diestrous levels. The dramatic reduction in TH mRNA during lactation was specific to the arcuate nucleus, as TH mRNA levels in the zona incerta were similar during lactation and diestrus. The suckling stimulus was the primary signal responsible for the suppression of TH mRNA in the arcuate nucleus, as removal of the pups for 6 h restored TH mRNA content to diestrous levels. By 24 h after pup removal, TH mRNA had reached almost twice diestrous levels. In view of the dramatic reduction in TH mRNA levels during lactation, we examined whether TH protein in the arcuate nucleus was similarly diminished. TH protein was detected by immunocytochemistry using a monoclonal antibody to TH. Qualitatively, TH staining was heavier in cell bodies, nerve fibers, and median eminence during diestrus. There was a small, but significant, decrease in TH-positive cell numbers during lactation (14% reduction) compared to those on diestrus. These data provide clear evidence that TH expression is suppressed during lactation, as evidenced by the decrease in TH mRNA and TH protein. The reduction in TH expression most likely contributes to the decrease in dopaminergic tone during lactation.

[Value of fine needle aspiration cytology in the diagnosis and management of fibroadenoma of the breast]

Cytological and histopathological biopsies were obtained from 121 breast lumps clinically diagnosed as fibroadenomas. Of these 98.3 percent of the lesions were benign. The cytological diagnosis was benign in 95.1 percent of 101 (83.4% of total) cases confirmed as fibroadenomas, histopathologically, but inadequate for diagnosis in 4.9 percent. The remaining 20 lesions included one breast cancer and one primary malignant lymphoma. In this group aspiration cytology was inadequate for diagnosis in 20 percent of the cases (P < 0.05). The cytological reports cast suspicion in the two malignant cases. No lesion with benign cytology was subsequently shown to be malignant. Ninety-five (78.5%) cases of the lesions, representing 72 women under 35 years of age, which has been clinically diagnosed as fibroadenomas, showed fibroadenoma, histopathologically, in 89.5% of these cases. The other 26 (21.5%) lesions in 21 patients, who were over 35 years in age, had 61.5 percent fibroadenomas, cytological results cast suspicion of fibroadenoma in 87.1 percent of these cases. The other 16 histopathologically diagnosed fibroadenomas in patients over 35 years of age showed 62.5% were cytologically suspected of being fibroadenomas (P < 0.025). As a result of this study it is reasonable to suggest that a typical clinical fibroadenoma can be treated conservatively in women under 35 years, but only if an adequate cytological smear obtained by fine needle aspiration does not show malignant of suspicious cells.

Evaluation of gastric emptying in severe, burn-injured patients

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible effect of a severe burn on gastric emptying by determining the absorption kinetics of orally administered acetaminophen.

DESIGN

A prospective, controlled study.

SETTING

A ten-bed burn center in a 1,300-bed university hospital.

PATIENTS

Ten adult patients suffering from second-degree burn involving > 20% of total body surface area and 20 normal, healthy volunteers who acted as controls.

INTERVENTIONS

Patients received routine treatment such as nutritional support and cimetidine. However, opiates were stopped for at least 12 hrs before the start of the study, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as alternatives were used. After an 8-hr fast, the subjects ingested 0.5 g acetaminophen with 200 mL of water. The plasma concentrations of acetaminophen were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography, and the absorption kinetics was estimated from determination of time to reach the maximum plasma concentration, the maximum plasma concentration, and the area under the plasma concentration-time curve.

MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS

The mean time for reaching the maximum plasma concentration was 33 +/- 24 (SD) mins in patients and 39 +/- 24 mins in the healthy volunteers. The mean area under the plasma concentration-time curve from time 0 to 120 mins and the mean maximum plasma concentration were 556 +/- 190 micrograms/mL/min and 9.5 +/- 3.5 micrograms/mL in patients, and 539 +/- 131 micrograms/mL/min and 7.8 +/- 2.8 micrograms/mL in volunteers, respectively. There was no statistical difference between groups in the time to reach the maximum plasma concentration, the area under the plasma concentration-time curve from time 0 to 120 mins, and the maximum plasma concentration. The time for reaching the maximum plasma concentration was not correlated with the severity of the burn (% area of burn) and the duration of healing (days) after burn.

CONCLUSIONS

We conclude that severe burn injury does not affect the kinetics of gastric emptying, and that 200 mL of water ingested 2 hrs before anesthesia is quite safe in severely burned patients. Also, the absorption kinetics of acetaminophen was not altered by burn injury.

Frequency and distribution of occult micrometastases in lymph nodes of patients with non-small-cell lung carcinoma

BACKGROUND

Accurate assessment of the presence and absence of tumor in the regional lymph nodes is critical in assessment of prognosis for patients with lung cancer. Development of sensitive immunohistochemical techniques and specific monoclonal antibodies has increased our capacity, in melanoma and breast cancer, to detect small groups of tumor cells or even single tumor cells in lymph nodes that appear to be tumor free in conventionally stained sections.

PURPOSE

This retrospective study was designed to assess whether use of a polyclonal antikeratin reagent in immunohistochemical analysis offers any advantage over conventional histopathology in detection of regional lymph node metastases in non-small-cell lung cancer.

METHODS

Paraffin-embedded tissue sections from regional lymph nodes of 65 patients with non-small-cell lung cancer were studied. We examined tissue from 588 nodes of 60 patients with a diagnosis of disease confined to the lung and from 72 nodes of five patients with a diagnosis of metastasis to some nodes. A polyclonal antikeratin antibody was applied to the lymph node tissue sections, using the avidin-biotin complex immunoperoxidase technique.

RESULTS

Single tumor cells and small clusters of tumor cells (occult micrometastases) not visible on routine evaluation were readily detected in 38 (63%) of the 60 patients whose nodes appeared to be negative on examination of hematoxylin-eosin-stained slides. In the five patients with a diagnosis of node-positive non-small-cell lung cancer, five (10%) of 51 nodes that were tumor free on conventional examination contained metastases. Metastatic tumor cells were most often located in the subcapsular or medullary sinuses. The lymph nodes that contained occult tumor cells were those located nearest to the tumor, mainly in peribronchial and hilar locations. The median survival of patients with occult metastases (1977 days) was shorter than that of patients whose nodes contained no tumor (2456 days) but was longer than that of patients whose nodes contained metastases detectable on hematoxylin-eosin-stained slides (927 days).

CONCLUSIONS

Our results suggest that, in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer, metastatic involvement of regional lymph nodes is more frequent than was previously determined by the conventional histologic method and substantially more frequent than in other tumor types, such as melanoma and breast cancer.

IMPLICATIONS

The high frequency of occult nodal metastases in non-small-cell lung cancer makes it clear that, without immunohistochemistry, disease is understaged in many patients. Therefore, it seems essential that immunohistochemical evaluation of the lymph nodes be undertaken in clinical trials.

Flow cytometric DNA analysis of advanced prostatic adenocarcinoma

Thirty-two patients with extracapsular invasive prostatic adenocarcinoma were analysed to investigate the prognostic significance of DNA flow cytometry by using the nuclear material extracted from paraffin embedded prostatectomy specimens. The DNA ploid pattern was diploid in 61% of the tumors and aneuploid in 39%. A significant correlation between the DNA diploid pattern with pathologic low grade tumors and the DNA aneuploid pattern with high stage tumors was not proved. The clinical stage correlated well with patients survival but only DNA ploidy pattern and pathologic grade had trends of correlation. However, if only the stage D tumors were analysed, a significant prognostic predictive value of DNA flow cytometry was identified. Although the results maybe regarded as preliminary, (in view of the small number of patients), these suggest that DNA content from the initial surgical samples provide only a synergistic effect to the clinical stage and pathologic grade in the prognostic evaluation of the advanced prostate cancers especially for those who underwent hormonal therapy postoperatively.

[Treatment of congestive heart failure complicating chronic Keshen disease with magnesium sulfate and captopril]

150 hospital patients of chronic Keshen disease with congestive heart failure were divided into two groups: the treatment group (TG) and control group (CG). Patients in TG (80 patients) were treated with magnesium sulfate and captopril, while those in CG (70 patients) with digoxin. The results showed a marked difference (P < 0.01) in the total effective ratio between TG (92.5 percent) and CG (65.7 percent). Both groups had an increase in cardiac output and cardiac index, but it was more apparent in TG. With sum vessel resistance (SVR), TG had a remarkable decrease (P < 0.01), patients in while those in CG did not (P > 0.05). The results also showed that the therapeutic effect in TG was satisfactory. The important function of magnesium, the basis of its treatment and the simultaneous administration of magnesium and captopril to reduce the cardiac preload and afterload and to improve the heart function were discussed.

The impact of subspecialty training on the management of advanced ovarian cancer

A retrospective study was conducted to determine the influence of subspecialty training in gynecologic oncology as well as several other covariates on the feasibility, operative mortality, and survival benefits of cytoreductive surgery for 263 patients with stages IIIC and IVA epithelial ovarian cancer. Covariates most predictive of an optimal (< or = 1 cm) cytoreductive outcome were the diameter of the largest metastases before cytoreduction (< or = 10 cm vs > 10 cm, P < 0.001) and the specialty training of the physicians present at surgery (gynecologic oncologists vs other, P < 0.001). Age influenced operative mortality most (< 60 vs > or = 60, P < 0.001). Covariates found to most significantly influence survival time include the specialty training of the physicians present at surgery (gynecologic oncologists vs other, P < 0.0001), cytoreductive outcome (complete vs optimal, P = 0.001, optimal vs suboptimal, P < 0.0001), grade of tumor (grade 1 vs grades 2 and 3, P = 0.01), and pelvic disease status (frozen pelvis vs mobile primary tumor, P = 0.03). We conclude that patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer should undergo aggressive cytoreductive surgery by gynecologic oncologists, with the objective to remove all macroscopic disease. Subsequent treatment with platinum-based chemotherapy offers the best chance for long-term survival or cure.

Psychological functioning of daughters of breast cancer patients. Part II: Characterizing the distressed daughter of the breast cancer patient

Sixty daughters whose mothers had breast cancer were cross-sectionally studied. Daughters age 11-20 reported feeling significantly more uncomfortable about involvement in their mothers' illness than daughters age 20+. Daughters whose mothers died were more likely to report long-term life plan changes and role changes with their mothers during the mothers' illness. The Global Symptom Index was predicted by the daughter's perceived degree of involvement with her mother (during her mother's illness), current emotional resolution (about her mother's illness), and sexual satisfaction. Sexual satisfaction was predicted by role changes during the mother's illness, frequency of sexual relations, and a depression scale.

[Surgical treatment of diffuse scrotal epidermal cysts: case report]

Epidermal cysts are common, benign skin tumors that are found mainly on the face, neck, and trunk. This case was a 53-year-old male bus driver who had suffered from multiple papules on his scrotum for 7 years. This affliction had caused intractable itching and responded poorly to medical treatment. The patient received an excision of these papules (total 32) 3 years ago. According to the pathological reports, these papules were epidermal cysts; unfortunately, these papules recurred within 3 months after the operation and then resulted in itching more severe than before. The patient was again admitted to the hospital ward and received an operation in Oct. 1990. The diseased tissue (14cm x 8cm) was then excised and the defective scrotal skin was covered with a meshed, split-thickness skin graft. The cosmetic result was enhanced by the rugate appearance of the healed meshed graft. The patient was satisfied with both the functional and cosmetic results. The itching sensation on the scrotum improved and there was no recurrence of epidermal cysts within the graft area during the 9 month follow-up period. With this simple and safe operation, the result gave a satisfying improvement in both symptoms and appearance; so this case is offered for reference.

A consecutive ultrastructural study of action of homoharringtonine on fibroblasts in vitro

The authors studied the effect of homoharringtonine (Hh), a semisynthetic Chinese herb, on the ultrastructure of in vitro cultured human conjunctival fibroblasts (HFb) and its mechanism of action. Preliminary results showed that the main characteristics of HFb damage caused by Hh were invagination of the nuclear membrane, aggregation and margination of chromatin, and massive vacuolization of the cytoplasm. In addition, Hh can inhibit the secretion of collagen fibers and the synthesis of microfilaments. Therefore, Hh might be an effective agent in the prevention and treatment of proliferative eye disorders.

Psychological functioning of daughters of breast cancer patients. Part I: Daughters and comparison subjects

Sixty daughters of mothers with breast cancer were matched for age, educational level, and race with 60 comparison subjects without a maternal history of breast cancer to assess the impact on psychological adjustment, coping, body image, sexual functioning, and health knowledge and practices of having had a mother with breast cancer. Daughters of breast cancer patients showed significantly less frequent sexual intercourse, lower sexual satisfaction, and greater feelings of vulnerability to breast cancer, and they could identify a greater number of symptoms of breast cancer. No differences between groups were found in psychological symptoms, coping styles, breast self-examination practices, mammography practices, health knowledge, or body-image ratings. Contrary to clinical studies, women at risk for breast cancer showed good overall coping with few signs of significant dysfunctions in relation to comparison subjects.

Effects of male rat urine on norepinephrine levels in the accessory olfactory bulb of young and aged female rats

Norepinephrine (NE) concentrations in the accessory olfactory bulbs (AOB) of young (4-5 months) and old (25-26 months) ovariectomized Sprague-Dawley rats, which were implanted with a 17 beta-estradiol silastic capsule and then exposed to male rat urine, were studied. The unilateral vomeronasal organ was removed in all rats one week before exposure to the urine stimulation. The NE level in the AOB of this surgical side served as the control. Urine collected from young adult male rats was poured into the female's cage at 12:00h and the animals were sacrificed before and 1, 2, or 3 hours after the male urine was given. The NE basal levels in the AOB of young rats decreased significantly at 14:00h compared to those at 12:00h, while no obvious changes in the NE concentrations were observed in the AOB of old rats during the same period. Two hours after continuous exposure to male urine, the NE concentrations in the AOB of young rats markedly increased, but no similar response occurred in the old rats. These data suggest that the noradrenergic functions in the AOB under basal conditions as well as in response to pheromonal stimulation may be modified with increasing age.

Norepinephrine levels in the vomeronasal system and their responses to male urine in young and aged female rats

Norepinephrine (NE) levels in brain areas of the vomeronasal system in young (4-5 months) and aged (25-26 months) ovariectomized Sprague-Dawley rats, which were implanted with a 17 beta-estradiol silastic capsule and then exposed to male rat urine, were investigated. The unilateral vomeronasal organ was removed in all rats one week before exposure to urine stimulation. NE levels in the medial nucleus of the amygdala (MA), medial preoptic area (MPOA), ventromedial nucleus of hypothalamus (VMH) and bed nucleus of stria terminalis (BST) were measured. NE concentrations in these brain areas of the surgical side served as the control. Urine collected from young adult male rats was poured into the female's cage at 12:00h and the animals were sacrificed before and 1, 2, or 3 hours after the male urine was given. The NE basal levels in the MA and MPOA of young rats decreased significantly from 13:00h to 15:00h, and those in young rat VMH declined markedly from 13:00h to 14:00h compared to those at 12:00h. No marked alterations in NE basal levels in young rat BST were found. In contrast, no obvious changes in the NE concentrations were observed in these brain areas of old rats. Continuous exposure to male urine did not affect the NE levels in any of these brain areas of young and aged rats. We concluded that (1) the time-dependent fluctuation of the NE basal levels in some brain areas of the vomeronasal system in female rats is age-related, and (2) the NE in all these nuclei of the vomeronasal system is not involved in pheromone-induced effects.

Effects of long-term dietary restriction on body temperature are modified with increasing age

Effects of long-term dietary restriction on body temperature and its circadian changes were investigated in 3.5- and 14.5-month-old male Long-Evans rats. Animals were either fed and libitum or kept on a restricted diet for 8 weeks. Purina Lab Chow was constantly available to the ad libitum-fed groups, while half portions of their daily food consumption were given to age-matched diet-restricted groups every day. A highly significant lowering of body temperature in middle-aged diet-restricted (MR) rats was not observed until their food intake had been restricted for 5 weeks compared with that of the middle-aged ad libitum-fed (MA) group as well as that of the young diet-restricted (YR) rats. Eight weeks after diet restriction, both the circadian pattern of body temperature and its diurnal peak-trough difference remained almost unchanged in all four groups, while the average body temperature of MR rats was greatly lower than that of the YR group and that of MA animals. No significant difference in average body temperature was found between the young ad libitum-fed (YA) rats and the MA group. These data suggest that the average body temperature and its circadian changes in ad libitum-fed rats, at least before the age of 14.5 months, is not age-related, while the effect of dietary restriction on body temperature may be modified with increasing age.

Long-term effects of testicular cancer on marital relationships

Thirty-four long-term survivors of testicular cancer and their wives were interviewed individually almost four years past the end of treatment to measure psychological and relationship functioning. Factors identified as important for couple adjustment to cancer--good communication, spousal support, and marital satisfaction--all acted positively to facilitate functioning in this sample. Good psychological adjustment was reflected in scores on the POMS, CES-D, Sense of Coherence, and Relationship Dimension of the Family Environment Scales. Several couples demonstrated lasting impairment, but, overall, the great majority of relationships were strengthened and couples emerged more tightly bonded.
