Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of a trickle-bed air biofilter (TBAB) for the removal of volatile organic compound (VOC) produced during polyurethane (PU) and epoxy manufacture. The major VOCs emitted are ethyl acetate (EA) for PU and EA and xylene for epoxy production. For the treatment of VOCs emitted during PU production, the employed coal carbon appears to be efficient as a VOC concentration buffer in the biofiltration of waste gases. Based on the results of EA and total hydrocarbon (THC) removal, it was concluded that the TBAB is suitable for controlling VOC emission during PU manufacture. For the treatment of VOCs emitted during epoxy production, it was found that the performance of the TBAB is relatively poor due to the lack of VOC sources. However, this problem could be easily solved by mixing the VOCs emitted during PU and epoxy manufacture.

Abstract
The information about how DNA sequence varies across the human genome is crucial for unravelling the genetic basis of drug response. A haplotype map, or HapMap, intended to reveal such a variation pattern, has been recently developed by the International HapMap Consortium. Here, we present a conceptual model for directly characterizing specific DNA sequence variants that are responsible for drug response based on the haplotype structure provided by HapMap. Our model is developed in the maximum likelihood context, incorporated by clinically meaningful mathematical functions that model drug response and implemented with the EM algorithm. Our model is employed to a pharmacogenetic study of cardiovascular disease with 107 patients. We found that the haplotype constituted by allele Gly16 (G) at codon 16 and allele Glu27 (G) at codon 27 genotyped within the beta2AR candidate gene exhibits a different effect on heart rate curve from the rest haplotypes. Parents with the diplotype consisting of two copies of haplotype GG are more sensitive in heart rate to increasing dosages of dobutamine than those with other haplotypes. This model provides a powerful tool for elucidating the genetic variants of drug response and ultimately designing personalized medications based on each patient's genetic constitution.

Abstract
HLA-Cw*1210 and -Cw*080102 were identified in Taiwan populations using reverse-line SSO typing method. Sequencing showed that HLA-Cw*1210 and -Cw*120201/02 were identical at exon 2 but differed at exon 3 with three nucleotide substitutions at codons 99 and 105 and an amino acid change from tyrosine to phenylalanine at codon 99. Also, allele HLA-Cw*080102 differed from HLA-Cw*080101 in exon 3 by a single synonymous nucleotide transition at codon 99. HLA-Cw*080102 was found only in the Puyuma indigenous tribe of Taiwan and had a frequency of 5%. Interestingly, nucleotide substitutions of HLA-Cw*1210 and -Cw*080102 were located in a noticeably heterogeneous region of the 5' end of exon 3, where similar substitution motifs are frequently found in other HLA-C alleles, therefore suggesting preferential gene conversion in this region.

Abstract
We report the second case of neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia due to anti-human platelet antigen (HPA)-3b (Bak(b)) antibody. The infant was severely affected with intracranial haemorrhage. Most importantly, we were able to detect this antibody only by using fresh, unfixed platelets as antigen. This antibody was detectable neither by conventional mixed passive haemagglutination, platelet immunofluorescence test using fixed platelets, nor by monoclonal antigen immobilization of platelet antigen assay using solubilized platelets. We assume that this antibody reacts only with fresh platelets and that the antigen is a labile component of HPA-3b (Bak(b)).

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of nisin in combination with heat or antimicrobial chemical treatments (such as lactic acid, chlorous acid, and sodium hypochlorite) on the inhibition of Listeria monocytogenes and total mesophiles in sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) caviar. The effects of nisin (250, 500, 750, and 1,000 IU/ml), lactic acid (1, 2, and 3%), chlorous acid (134 and 268 ppm), sodium hypochlorite (150 and 300 ppm), and heat at 60 degrees C for 3 min were evaluated for a five-strain mixture of L. monocytogenes and total mesophiles in sturgeon caviar containing 3.5% salt. Selected combinations of these antimicrobial treatments were also tested. Injured and viable L. monocytogenes cells were recovered using an overlay method. Treating caviar with > or =500 IU/ml nisin initially reduced L. monocytogenes by 2 to 2.5 log units. Chlorous acid (268 ppm) reduced L. monocytogenes from 7.7 log units to undetectable (<0.48 log units) after 4 days of storage at 4 degrees C. However, there were no synergistic effects observed for combinations of nisin (500 or 750 IU/ml) plus either lactic acid or chlorous acid. Lactic acid caused a slight reduction (approximately 1 log unit) in the microbial load during a 6-day period at 4 degrees C. Sodium hypochlorite was ineffective at the levels tested. Mild heating (60 degrees C for 3 min) with nisin synergistically reduced viable counts of L. monocytogenes and total mesophiles. No L. monocytogenes cells (<0.48 log units) were recovered from caviar treated with heat and nisin (750 IU/ml) after a storage period of 28 days at 4 degrees C.

Abstract
Two new HLA-DRB1 alleles were identified by sequencing-based typing in the oral submucous fibrosis and buccal cancer patients of Taiwan. They have been officially named HLA-DRB1*0903 and DRB1*1145 by the World Health Organization Nomenclature Committee. The complete exon 2 sequence of DRB1*0903 was identical to that of the DRB1*090102 but differed by nucleotides of position 207-210 and 216 (AGAC, C replacing GCGG, and G). The DRB1*1145 was identical to the DRB1*110101 except for three nucleotide substitutions at codon 199, 220, and 221 (A, CT replacing T, and GC). Two complete exon 2 sequences of those new alleles had been deposited in the EMBL Sequence Database under accession number AY465114 and AY465115, respectively.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics of anisodamine enantiomers in plasma after oral and intravenous administration of racemic anisodamine in rabbits. A capillary electrophoresis method for the simultaneous separation of two pairs of enantiomers in plasma has been firstly developed and validated. Using a 75 mM phosphate buffer containing 25 mM carboxymethylated-gamma-cyclodextrin at pH 2.5, good resolution was achieved on a 45-cm uncoated fused-silica capillary at the voltage of 20 kV and 25 degrees C. The pharmacokinetics of individual anisodamine enantiomers were characterized using the CE assay, the sole method of enantiomeric separation for anisodamine. Pharmacokinetic analysis of results indicated that anisodamine enantiomers showed non-stereoselective disposition or stereoselective disposition in different rabbits. For the rabbits with non-stereoselective disposition, similar pharmacokinetic characteristics were observed between (6S, 2'S)- and (6R, 2'R)-, or (6S, 2'R)- and (6R, 2'S)-anisodamine. For the rabbits with stereoselective disposition, (6S, 2'S)- and (6R, 2'S)-anisodamine were below the established LOD, while the two remaining enantiomers also had similar pharmacokinetic profiles. Further investigations remain necessary to find out the underlying mechanism about the stereoselective disposition of (6S, 2'S)- and (6R, 2'S)-anisodamine.

Abstract
Cytokine gene polymorphisms may affect their transcription, influence their level of production, and may be implicated in inducing susceptibility or resistance to diseases. Cytokine single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were used to determine allelic and genotypic frequencies in the Minnan, the Hakka, and in four indigenous tribes: the Ami, the Tsou, the Atayal, and the Tao (or Yami). The following cytokine gene polymorphisms were analyzed: interleukin-1alpha (IL-1alpha) (T/C -889), IL-1beta (C/T -511, T/C +3962), IL-1R (C/T Pst-I 1970), IL-1Ralpha (T/C Mspa1-I 1100), IL-2 (T/G -330, G/T +166), IL-4 (T/G -1098, T/C -590, T/C -33), IL-4Ralpha (G/A +1902), IL-6 (G/C -174, G/A nt565), IL-10 (G/A -1082, C/T -819, C/A -592), IL-12 (C/A -1188), interferon-gamma (A/T UTR 5644), transforming growth factor-beta (C/T codon 10, G/C codon 25), and TNF-alpha (G/A -308, G/A -238). Little differences were observed between the Minnan and the Hakka. On the other hand, the Minnan and Hakka showed significant differences with the indigenous people.

Abstract
Recent regulatory concerns about the presence of the pathogen Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat aquatic foods such as caviar has prompted the development of postpackaging pasteurization processes. However, caviar is heat labile, and conventional pasteurization processes affect the texture, color, and flavor of these foods negatively. In this study, chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta, 2.5% total salt) caviar or ikura and sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus, 3.5% total salt) caviar were inoculated with three strains of Listeria innocua in stationary phase at a level of more than 10(7) CFU/g. L innocua strains were used because they exhibit an equivalent response to L monocytogenes for many physicochemical processing treatments, including heat treatment. The products were treated by immersion in 500 IU/ml nisin solution and heat processed (an 8-D process without nisin or a 4-D process with 500 IU/ml nisin) in a newly developed radio frequency (RF; 27 MHz) heating method at 60, 63, and 65 degrees C. RF heating along with nisin acted synergistically to inactivate L. innocua cells and total mesophilic microorganisms. In the RF-nisin treatment at 65 degrees C, no surviving L. innocua microbes were recovered in sturgeon caviar or ikura. The come-up times in the RF-heated product were significantly lower compared with the water bath-heated caviar at all treatment temperatures. The visual quality of the caviar products treated by RF with or without nisin was comparable to the untreated control.

Abstract
Two new HLA-DRB1 alleles have been found by using high-resolution sequence-based typing. The two sequences have been officially named DRB1*1350 (HWS10001327-AY048687) and DRB1*140502 (HWS10001790-AY129430). DRB1*1350 differs from DRB1*110101 by two amino acids at positions 37 (Y-->N) and 58 (A-->E). This allele may arise from gene conversion between DRB1*110101 and DRB1*130201 or DRB1*030101, which are commonly found in Taiwan populations. The other allele, DRB1*140502, obtained from a patient with rheumatoid arthritis, differs from DRB1*140501 at codon 58 (GCC-->GCT). However, it causes no change in amino acid sequence and would therefore not have direct clinical implications.
