Anomalous systemic arterial supply to the basal segments of the lung presenting with a murmur

A murmur was discovered on routine preschool physical examination of a 5 year and 7 month-old boy. A lower lobe lesion was detected by chest X-ray. Aortography demonstrated that a large systemic artery from the descending thoracic aorta supplied the basilar segments of the left lower lobe, which had no normal pulmonary arterial supply. A clinical diagnosis of intralobar sequestration of the lung was made, and left lower lobectomy was performed.

Radioimmunoassay of main urinary metabolite of prostaglandin F2alpha in patients with diffuse interstitial fibrosing pneumonitis (DIFP) and other respiratory diseases

Radioimmunoassay of 5alpha, 7alpha-dihydroxy-11-keto-tetra-norprosta-1,16-dioic acid, main urinary metabolite of prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha-MUM), was performed in patients with various respiratory diseases including diffuse interstitial fibrosing pneumonitis (DIFP, fibrosing alveolitis). Twenty-four hr excretion of PGF2alpha-MUM in patients with primary lung cancer, pulmonary fibrosis secondary to collagen diseases and stationary DIFP was normal. On the other hand, 24 hr excretion of PGF2alpha-MUM in patients with carcinomatous pleuritis was high and that in patients with aggravating DIFP was markedly high. There was no correlation between serum LDH levels and 24 hr excretion of PGF2alpha-MUM.

[Irritative activity of antiinflammatory agents, betamethasone 17-valerate, beclomethasone 17, 21-dipropionate, betamethasone 17, 21-dipropionate, or indomethacin on the gastrointestinal tract in rats and dogs (author's transl)]

Irritative effects of three steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on the gastrointestinal tract of rats and dogs were determined. With either single or repeated subcutaneous administration these drugs dose dependently irritated the gastric mucosa of both species. The intestinal mucosa was less affected. Concomitant oral administration of aspirin or subcutaneous administration of indomethacin revealed an aggravation of aspirin-induced gastric ulcers by betamethasone valerate and inhibition of indomethacin-induced intestinal ulcers by beta-methasone dipropionate. These two steroidal drugs had no noxious effect on healing of chronic gastric ulcers induced in rats and dogs. Betamethasone valerate, however, delayed the healing of gastric ulcer in rats. Indomethacin, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, also induced serious damage to the gastric and intestinal mucosa both of rats and dogs. Indomethacin ingestion delayed the healing of chronic gastric ulcer in rats but not in dogs. Since both steroidal and non-steroidal drugs induce damage to the gastrointestinal tract, a careful monitoring of the patients' complaints should be carried out when these compounds are used as a systemic treatment. Steroidal drugs used in this study, however, appear to be highly safe from the point of dose inasmuch as they are used as a topical treatment.

A new method of pancreatic juice collection in the conscious dog

A simplified method for the collection of pancreatic juice in a conscious dog is described and the results of pancreatic secretions in response to both exogenous and endogenous stimulations are presented. This new method, simple to perform and providing easy collection of pancreatic juice, is also applicable to the intraduodenal infusion experiments.
