Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE DW-MR spectroscopy can detect the diffusion coefficients of NAA, Cr, PCr, and Cho and can, therefore, provide some useful information. The aims of this study were to probe the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of MELAS and to see whether DW-MR spectroscopy is a useful technique for other diseases besides cerebral infarction. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifteen healthy volunteers and 10 patients with MELAS were enrolled in the study. All were scanned on a 3T whole-body MR imaging scanner. Fifteen ADCs of the singlet metabolites in the gray matter of the healthy subjects, 10 ADCs of the singlet metabolites in the lesions, and 8 ADCs of the singlet metabolites in the nonaffected areas were used in the statistical analysis, respectively. RESULTS The metabolite ADCs of the nonaffected areas and the lesions in the patients were higher than those of the frontal gray matter in the healthy controls. There were significant differences between the metabolite ADCs of the nonaffected areas in patients and those in the healthy controls, and it was the same with the metabolite ADCs of the lesions and those of the healthy controls. CONCLUSIONS The increased ADC values of the metabolites reveal that MELAS is a mitochondrial neuronopathy and involves the entire brain. DW-MR spectroscopy is a very useful noninvasive technique, which can show some valuable information that conventional MR imaging cannot display. Thus, it can be applied to brain diseases besides cerebral infarction.

Abstract
We report results from a reanalysis of data from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS II) experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. Data taken between October 2006 and September 2008 using eight germanium detectors are reanalyzed with a lowered, 2 keV recoil-energy threshold, to give increased sensitivity to interactions from weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with masses below ∼10 GeV/c(2). This analysis provides stronger constraints than previous CDMS II results for WIMP masses below 9 GeV/c(2) and excludes parameter space associated with possible low-mass WIMP signals from the DAMA/LIBRA and CoGeNT experiments.

Abstract
Measurements of dijet azimuthal decorrelations in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC are presented. The analysis is based on an inclusive dijet event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 pb⁻¹. The results are compared to predictions from perturbative QCD calculations and various Monte Carlo event generators. The dijet azimuthal distributions are found to be sensitive to initial-state gluon radiation.

Abstract
Measurements of the total and differential cross sections dσ/dp(T)(B) and dσ/dy(B) for B(+) mesons produced in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=7 TeV are presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.8 pb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment operating at the LHC. The exclusive decay B(+)→J/ψK(+), with J/ψ→μ(+)μ(-), is used to detect B(+) mesons and to measure the production cross section as a function of p(T)(B) and y(B). The total cross section for p(T)(B)>5 GeV and |y(B)|<2.4 is measured to be 28.1±2.4±2.0±3.1 μb, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the last is from the luminosity measurement.

Abstract
Geese form a fatty liver after feeding on a carbohydrate-rich diet, possibly as an evolutionary adaptation to accumulate reserves for migration. To gain insight into the gene-regulation processes of hepatic steatosis in geese, we examined the profile of transcriptional expression in goose fatty liver and control liver by suppression subtractive hybridization and measured the levels of serum biochemical variables. We found 107 genes whose expression was different between the treatment and control groups. The main functions of these genes are metabolic processes, including the metabolism of carbohydrates, amino acids, and lipids. Twenty-four genes were classified using the Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes pathways. Twelve genes that related to metabolic and cellular processes were confirmed by quantitative RT-PCR. A specific positive effect of feeding was observed on the expression of genes involved mainly in unsaturated fatty acids and triglyceride synthesis, and a negative effect was observed on genes involved in β-oxidation, cholesterol metabolism, and glycolysis. The results could serve as an important reference for the development of goose breeding for fatty liver production and human liver disease research.

Abstract
The stability of soddyite under electron irradiation has been studied over the temperature range of 25-300 °C. At room temperature, soddyite undergoes a crystalline-to-amorphous transformation (amorphization) at a total dose of 6.38 × 10(8) Gy. The electron beam irradiation results suggest that the soddyite structure is susceptible to radiation-induced nanocrystallization of UO(2). The temperature dependence of amorphization dose increases linearly up to 300 °C. A thermogravimetric and calorimetric analysis (TGA-DSC) combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicates that soddyite retains its water groups up to 400 °C, followed by the collapse of the structure. Based on thermal analysis of uranophane, the removal of some water groups at relatively low temperatures provokes the collapse of the uranophane structure. This structural change appears to be the reason for the increase of amorphization dose at 140 °C. According to the results obtained, radiation field of a nuclear waste repository, rather than temperature effects, may cause changes in the crystallinity of soddyite and affect its stability during long-term storage.

Abstract
Exposure of the vasculature to vasodilators, pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals may lead to injury of the blood vessel wall in animals. Vascular injury may begin with changes in the permeability of vascular endothelial cell and vessels, resulting in possible hemorrhage and edema leading subsequently to immune cell infiltration. The present study was undertaken to determine if the direct exposure of the Sprague Dawley rat mesenteric vasculature through the perfusion of aminophylline, fenoldopam, compound 48/80, histamine or serotonin has any such effects on the blood vessels, and if the two vital dyes Monastral blue B and Evans blue can be used to enhance the visualization of the vascular damage. Microscopic visualization was enhanced by the use of dyes and a variety of alterations of the perfused mesenteric vessels were detected, including varying degrees of mast cell degranulation, microvascular vasodilatation and increased vascular permeability. Macroscopic evidence of vascular damage was minimal. This study demonstrates that in situ perfusion of the rat mesentery is a simple and useful method to eliminate the influence of a variety of physiologic influences or homeostatic responses and can be used to further investigate drug-induced vascular damage.

Abstract
Optimal blood levels of tacrolimus in transplant recipients are critically important to preserve the allograft. Suboptimal doses of the immunosuppressant can result in allograft toxicity or rejection. In the present study, we determined CYP3A5 genotypes of patients and analyzed their medical documents in 2 successive periods. In the first period, a fixed initial dosage of 0.1 mg/kg was prescribed daily for 28 patients regardless of their CYP3A5 genotype. In the second period, CYP3A5 genotyping was performed with polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism and DNA sequencing. The frequency distribution of CYP3A5 genotypes was 47.4% (38/78) for *1/*3, 2.6% (2/78) for *1/*1, and 50% (39/78) for *3/*3. The patients with *1/*3 had shown significantly lower tacrolimus blood levels than those with the *3/*3 when the initial dose of 0.10 mg/kg was given for 2 weeks postoperatively. In the second period, initial dosages were selected according to individuals' CYP3A5 genotypes, 0.08 mg/kg/d for recipients with CYP3A5 *3/*3 and 0.15 mg/kg/d for recipients with *1/*3. Adjustment of the initial dosage of tacrolimus was documented to improve the proportion of patients achieving target drug blood levels in the early postoperative stage: from 46.7% to 81.8% of the *1/*3 group and from 46.2% to 73.1% of the *3/*3 group on the third day. In conclusion, CYP3A5 polymorphism plays an important role in influencing tacrolimus blood levels. Initial tacrolimus dosage selection based on CYP3A5 genotyping can improve drug blood levels in the early stage following renal transplantation.

Abstract
An x-ray pinhole camera and a monochromatic K(α) imager are used to measure the interactions of intense femtosecond laser pulses with Cu foil targets. The two diagnostics give different features in the spot size and the laser energy scaling, which are resulted from different physical processes. Under our experimental conditions, the K(α) emission is mainly excited by the fast electrons transporting inside the cold bulk target. In contrast, the x-ray pinhole signals are dominated by the broadband thermal x-ray emission from the hot plasma at the front target surface.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intracranial large artery disease (ICLAD), such as stenosis and calcification, is common in Chinese patients with stroke. However, little is known about ICLAD and its association with large arterial stiffness in hypertensive patients. METHODS We recruited 270 (mean age 61.0 years, 45.6% male) untreated hypertensive patients without stroke from a community in Shanghai, China. ICLAD was detected by computerized tomographic angiography (CTA). Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV), office, and 24-h ambulatory pulse pressure (PP) as well as ambulatory arterial stiffness index (AASI) were determined as the measures of arterial stiffness. RESULTS Among all participants, 26 (9.6%) had concurrent intracranial arterial stenosis and calcification, 11 (4.1%) stenosis only, and 71 (26.3%) calcifications only. After adjustment for age, mean arterial pressure, and other covariables, there was significant difference in cf-PWV (13.1 vs. 13.7 vs. 15.0 m/s; P = 0.0015) and 24-h PP (46.7 vs. 48.8 vs. 55.7 mm Hg; P = 0.0007) between patients with normal vessels (n = 162), with stenosis or calcification (n = 82), and with both lesions (n = 26). Multiple ordinal logistic regression analyses showed that both cf-PWV and 24-h PP were independently associated with ICLAD. Odds ratios (95% confidence interval (CI)) of ICLAD after multivariable and mutually adjustment were 1.51 (1.09-2.10) and 1.46 (1.06-2.01) for 1-s.d. increase in cf-PWV and 24-h PP, respectively. No significant association (P ≥ 0.10) with AASI or office PP was observed in multivariable analysis. CONCLUSION Increased arterial stiffness was independently associated with ICLAD. cf-PWV and 24-h PP might be useful in identifying those more likely to have ICLAD among hypertensive patients.
