Abstract
The cw and femtosecond laser operations of Yb(3+):CaYAlO(4) (Yb:CYA) are demonstrated. The laser emitted a maximum cw power of 1.94 W with a slope efficiency (η(slope)) of 71% and an optical-to-optical efficiency (η(opt)) of 51%. Under mode-locking operation, the laser emitted near transform-limited pulses with 156 fs pulse width, 8.1 nJ pulse energy and 0.74 W average power. The η(slope) and η(opt) of the mode-locked laser were 37% and 20%, respectively.

Abstract
Edaravone is currently being used in acute ischemic stroke both in clinical and experimental research as a potent antioxidant. Here we explore the effects of edaravone on delayed neuronal death (DND) and long-dated cognitive dysfunction of hippocampus after cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury and explain the underlying mechanisms and pathways. Our findings suggested that edaravone not only significantly alleviated delayed neuronal death and cognitive dysfunction of hippocampus after cerebral focal ischemia, but also markedly decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. In addition, edaravone increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels and reduced the levels of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α expression; edaravone, also suppressed glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) proliferation at days 3, 7 and 30 after reperfusion. Overall, the consensus emerging from this body of data indicated that edaravone exerts a later neuroprotective effect to hippocampus through its ability to inhibit inflammation, suppression of astrocyte activation and scavenging free radicals in stroke events.

Abstract
A sensitive and convenient immunoassay that can directly differentiate pandemic (H1N1) 2009 (pH1N1) virus from seasonal influenza virus can play an important role in the clinic. In the presented study, a double-sandwich ELISA (pH1N1 ELISA), based on two monoclonal antibodies against haemagglutinin (HA) of the pH1N1 virus, was developed. After laboratory determination of the sensitivity and specificity characteristics, the performance of this assay was evaluated in a cohort of 904 patients with influenza-like illness. All seven strains of pH1N1 virus tested were positive by pH1N1 ELISA, with an average lower detection limit of 10(3.0 ± 0.4) tissue culture infective dose (TCID)(50) /mL (or 0.009 ± 0.005 HA titre). Cross-reaction of the assay with seasonal influenza virus and other common respiratory pathogens was rare. In pH1N1-infected patients, the sensitivity of the pH1N1 ELISA was 92.3% (84/91, 95% CI 84.8-96.9%), which is significantly higher than that of the BD Directigen EZ Flu A + B test (70.3%, p <0.01). The specificity of pH1N1 ELISA in seasonal influenza A patients was 100.0% (171/171, 95% CI 97.9-100.0%), similar to that in non-influenza A patients (640/642, 99.7%, 95% CI 98.9-100.0%). The positive predictive value for pH1N1 ELISA was 97.7% and the negative predictive value was 99.1% in this study population with a pH1N1 prevalence of 10.1%. In conclusion, detection of HA of pH1N1 virus by immunoassay appears to be a convenient and reliable method for the differential diagnosis of pH1N1 from other respiratory pathogens, including seasonal influenza virus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex genetic disease; the histamine H4 receptor (HRH4) has been shown to be related to different kinds of autoimmune disorders; and copy number variations (CNVs) have been found to be associated with various types of diseases. OBJECTIVES To explore a possible association between HRH4 (formerly H4R) CNVs and the risk of SLE. METHODS Genomic DNA and RNA from 340 patients with SLE and 392 healthy controls were extracted, and CNVs and mRNA levels of HRH4 were examined. RESULTS The expression of HRH4 mRNA was significantly increased in patients with SLE compared with controls. Amplification of HRH4 copy numbers significantly increased the risk of SLE [P < 0·001, odds ratio (OR) 2·26, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·50-3·40]. HRH4 amplifications also positively correlated with the incidence of arthritis (P = 0·019, OR 1·96, 95% CI 1·11-3·47), and proteinuria (P < 0·001, OR 2·95, 95% CI 1·73-5·00) and antinuclear antibody abnormalities (P < 0·001, OR 2·97, 95% CI 1·66-5·33). Deletions of HRH4 copy numbers were protective against proteinuria (P = 0·03, OR 0·50, 95% CI 0·26-0·94). CONCLUSION CNVs of the HRH4 gene are associated with SLE.

Abstract
The results of the first search for long-lived gluinos produced in 7 TeV pp collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider are presented. The search looks for evidence of long-lived particles that stop in the CMS detector and decay in the quiescent periods between beam crossings. In a dataset with a peak instantaneous luminosity of 1×10(32) cm-2 s-1, an integrated luminosity of 10 pb-1, and a search interval corresponding to 62 hours of LHC operation, no significant excess above background was observed. Limits at the 95% confidence level on gluino pair production over 13 orders of magnitude of gluino lifetime are set. For a mass difference mg - mχ1(0) >100 GeV/c2, and assuming BR(g→gχ1(0))=100%, mg < 370 GeV/c2 are excluded for lifetimes from 10 μs to 1000 s.

Abstract
The study aims to determine whether light microscopy can be used to accurately measure the diameters of intercellular spaces between squamous epithelial cells in the lower esophagus, and whether changes in this outcome measure can be used as a diagnostic marker for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The study has two parts. Part 1 involves 42 asymptomatic controls and 119 patients with typical symptoms of GERD, including 58 with erosive esophagitis (EE), and 61 patients with nonerosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (NERD). All biopsies were taken from the lower esophagus. All samples were observed using an immersion objective, after which diameters were measured by computer-assisted morphometry. Part 2 involves 61 individuals who were randomly selected from part 1, including 19 controls, 13 with NERD and 29 with EE. Diameter measurements using both light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were performed for samples of 61 individuals. Samples from a total of 61 individuals (31 male, 30 female, mean age 44.3 ± 16.0 years) were observed using both light microscopy and TEM. Both methods showed significant differences between control and disease groups; the outcomes from the two methods had a certain correlation (r = 0.605, P = 0.000). Morphometric analysis of all 161 individuals (83 males, 78 females, mean age 41.4 ± 15.7) showed mean diameters from light microscopy to be 0.58 ± 0.16 µm for controls, 1.07 ± 0.30 µm for NERD, and 1.29 ± 0.20 µm for EE; differences between control and disease groups were significant (P<0.05). The optimal cut-off value from receiver operator characteristic analysis was 0.85 µm. Diagnoses were validated using the combination of symptoms of GERD, endoscopy, and 24 h ambulatory pH monitoring as the gold standard. At the optimal cutoff, sensitivity was 93.3% and specificity was 100%. The diameters of the intercellular spaces in squamous epithelium of lower esophagus from controls and in patients with GERD can be quantitatively measured using light microscopy. Dilated diameters can serve as a sensitive, specific, and objective indicator for diagnosis of GERD.

Abstract
HLA-G and HLA-E are nonclassical human MHC class I molecules, which promote tolerance to NK cytotoxicity. MICA and MICB are known to enhance the functions of NK and T cells. However, the expression of these molecules has never been investigated in liver cancer. Using RT-PCR and western blot, we aimed to identify the expression of HLA-G, HLA-E, MICA and MICB in a panel of 41 tissues dissecting from liver cancer patients in China. HLA-G mRNA was expressed in 8 of 41 Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) specimens and in 1 adjacent normal hepatocellular tissue. The expression of HLA-G protein was found in 7 of the 8 HLA-G mRNA-positive HCC tissues. HLA-E mRNA was up-regulated in 56% HCC specimens but the expression of HLA-E protein was only upregulated in 29% HCC tissues in comparison with their adjacent normal counterpart. MICA and MICB mRNA was decreased in 5% and 8% HCC specimens, while the expression of their proteins decreased in 21% and 24% HCC tissues. These results suggested that the expressions of HLA-G, HLA-E, MICA and MICB were differently up-regulated in HCC tissues. Furthermore, HLA-E and MICA/B genes showed obviously distinctive expression pattern at transcription and translation level.

Abstract
PURPOSE Preclinical trials have shown that sonochemotherapy is effective for human ovarian cancers. Therefore, the effects of sonochemotherapy on cell adhesion and motility were investigated in this study, considering their roles in cancer metastasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cell lines, HO-8910 and its highly metastatic potential subline HO-8910PM, were subjected to cisplatin, paclitaxel and sonochemotherapy (anticancer drugs followed by insonation). Cytotoxicity was determined, and then cell adhesion, migration and invasion assays were performed. RESULTS Neither cisplatin (0.5 μg/ml) nor paclitaxel (6.0 μg/ml) alone led to cell death. The addition of ultrasound did not potentiate an anticancer drug, suggesting that there was a threshold dose for a cytotoxic agent employed in sonochemotherapy. The survival rate was decreased when combining cisplatin and paclitaxel followed by insonation. 6.0 μg/ml of paclitaxel completely suppressed cell adhesion and motility, thus the concentration was decreased to 1.2 μg/ml. Migration and invasion assays were only successfully performed in HO-8910PM cells. Cisplatin and paclitaxel inhibited adhesion, migration and invasion, resulting in lower rates, which were additionally decreased by insonation. No cell traveled through the membrane when cisplatin, paclitaxel and ultrasound were combined. Quantitative evaluations indicated that ultrasound enhanced anticancer agents via synergistic and/or additive effects. CONCLUSION Ultrasound synergized a combined regime and sonochemotherapy was a measure to suppress cancer spread.

Abstract
AIM Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists for the treatment of type 2 diabetes are administered by daily injection because of short plasma half-lives, which result partly from the biochemical instability of these peptides. There is a medical need for GLP-1 analogues that can be administered less frequently for patient convenience. METHODS We synthesized a series of human GLP-1 (hGLP-1(7-36)NH(2) ) derivatives containing α-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) substitutions, analysed their enzymatic stabilities and evaluated their secondary structures using circular dichroism (CD) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). RESULTS Plasma stability experiments showed that only the analogue containing Aib substitutions in both the N-terminus (position 8) and the C-terminus (position 35), [Aib⁸(,)³⁵]hGLP-1(7-36)NH₂ (BIM-51077), was fully resistant to enzymatic cleavage. Incubation with human plasma kallikrein or plasmin confirmed that the Aib substitution at position 35 prevented protease cleavage around this residue, which contributes to the significantly enhanced plasma stability and increased plasma half-life. CD revealed increased C-terminal α-helicity in Aib³⁵-substituted analogues compared with both hGLP-1(7-36)NH₂ and analogues containing only Aib⁸ substitutions. Based on NMR studies, the secondary structure of BIM-51077 is similar to hGLP-1(7-36)NH₂ with a slight increase in α-helicity in the C-terminus. Compared with hGLP-1(7-36)NH₂, BIM-51077 had similar binding affinity for the human GLP-1 receptor and activated this receptor with similar potency. CONCLUSIONS We have discovered an Aib⁸(,)³⁵-substituted analogue of native hGLP-1(7-36)NH₂ (BIM-51077) that retains the structure of the native peptide, and has similar activity and enhanced stability. A sustained-release formulation of this molecule (taspoglutide) is in phase-3 clinical development.

Abstract
A search for quark compositeness in the form of quark contact interactions, based on hadronic jet pairs (dijets) produced in proton-proton collisions at √s=7 TeV, is described. The data sample of the study corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 pb(-1) collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The dijet centrality ratio, which quantifies the angular distribution of the dijets, is measured as a function of the invariant mass of the dijet system and is found to agree with the predictions of the standard model. A statistical analysis of the data provides a lower limit on the energy scale of quark contact interactions. The sensitivity of the analysis is such that the expected limit is 2.9 TeV; because the observed value of the centrality ratio at high invariant mass is below the expectation, the observed limit is 4.0 TeV at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract
We report the first measurement of the transverse momentum dependence of double-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of pions in deep-inelastic scattering off the longitudinally polarized proton. Data have been obtained using a polarized electron beam of 5.7 GeV with the CLAS detector at the Jefferson Lab (JLab). Modulations of single spin asymmetries over the azimuthal angle between lepton scattering and hadron production planes ϕ have been measured over a wide kinematic range in Bjorken x and virtual photon squared four-momentum Q2. A significant nonzero sin2ϕ single spin asymmetry was observed for the first time indicating strong spin-orbit correlations for transversely polarized quarks in the longitudinally polarized proton.

Abstract
The decays ψ'→γπ(0), γη and γη' are studied using data collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII e(+)e(-) collider. The processes ψ'→γπ(0) and ψ'→γη are observed for the first time with signal significances of 4.6σ and 4.3σ, respectively. The branching fractions are determined to be B(ψ'→γπ(0))=(1.58±0.40±0.13)×10(-6), B(ψ'→γη)=(1.38±0.48±0.09)×10(-6), and B(ψ'→γη')=(126±3±8)×10(-6), where the first errors are statistical and the second ones systematic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) subtypes, proteins or lipids that become glycated after exposure to sugars, can induce complications in diabetes. Among the various AGE subtypes, glyceraldehyde-derived AGE (AGE-2) and glycolaldehyde-derived AGE (AGE-3) are involved in inflammation in diabetic patients; monocytes are activated by these AGEs. Ciprofloxacin (CIP), a fluorinated 4-quinolone, is often used clinically to treat infections associated with diabetis due to its antibacterial properties. It also modulates immune responses in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) therefore we investigated the involvement of AGEs in these effects. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Expression of intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1, B7.1, B7.2 and CD40 was examined by flow cytometry. The production of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interferon (IFN)-gamma, prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) and cAMP were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 expression was determined by Western blot analysis. Lymphocyte proliferation was determined by [(3)H]-thymidine uptake. KEY RESULTS CIP induced PGE(2) production in monocytes, irrespective of the presence of AGE-2 and AGE-3, by enhancing COX-2 expression; this led to an elevation of intracellular cAMP in monocytes. Non-selective and selective COX-2 inhibitors, indomethacin and NS398, inhibited CIP-induced PGE(2) and cAMP production. In addition, CIP inhibited AGE-2- and AGE-3-induced expressions of ICAM-1, B7.1, B7.2 and CD40 in monocytes, the production of TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma and lymphocyte proliferation in PBMC. Indomethacin, NS398 and a protein kinase A inhibitor, H89, inhibited the actions of CIP. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS CIP exerts immunomodulatory activity via PGE(2), implying therapeutic potential of CIP for the treatment of AGE-2- and AGE-3-induced inflammatory responses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A kinase anchor protein 12 (AKAP12/gravin) belongs to a family of scaffold proteins and organizes protein kinase (PK)A and PKC. DNA hypermethylation in the AKAP12 promoter region has been reported in a variety of human cancers with the exception of skin cancer. Methylation-specific high-resolution melting (MS-HRM) analysis is a novel tool for analysis of promoter methylation. AIM To use MS-HRM analysis to detect the methylation levels of the AKAP12 gene in skin samples. METHODS In total, 195 samples, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and actinic keratosis were examined. MS-HRM analysis was used to detect methylation levels of the AKAP12 gene in these samples. RESULTS MS-HRM analysis successfully detected the methylation of AKAP12 in skin samples. The frequencies of AKAP12 methylation in all three types of skin abnormalities were significantly higher than in normal tissues. CONCLUSIONS Application of MS-HRM analysis proved to be a fast and high-throughput method to investigate the epigenetic status of AKAP12. Methylation of AKAP12 can be detected in different skin abnormalities.

Abstract
Background and Objective: The intrinsic high false negative rate associated with intraoperative analysis of SLN may result in a second surgical procedure for the patient. We attempt to improve the intraoperative and the pathologic and molecular evaluation of SLN by utilizing novel immunobead methods for detection and assessment of tumor cell expression of Her2, CD44 and Muc1.
Methods: During the operation of breast cancer patients, gived sentinel lymph node biopsy firstly, and the SLN will each be divided in four quadrants, and two quadrants (B,C) will be brought to the pathologist for routine intraoperative analysis and further immunhistochemical (H&E and CK) examination often 2 mm thick sections of each quadrant.
The other (A,D) quadrants will be immediately mechanically disaggregated and filtered in order to remove stromal elements and cellular debris. The resulting cell suspension will be incubated with 4.5 µm magnetic beads coated with MOC31 antibody, and simultaneously with different nonmagnetic, fluorescent microparticles coated with either anti-Her2, anti-CD44, or anti-Muc1 by flow-cytometry.
Results: 62 cases from 2009.1 to 2009.9 in our hospital has been studied, and results as follows: 1. Immunomagnetic evaluation of alive tumor cells in SLNs is rapidly and easily performed using the MOC-31 antibody that binds to the vast majority of breast cancer cells. The novel technologies will demonstrate higher detection sensitivity (96%) and lower false negative rate (4.0%). 2. For the intraoperative frozen HE staining, the sensitivity was 68%, false negative rate was 32%; and for CK-IHC, the sensitivity was 76.0%, and the false negative rate was 24%. 3.To compare to standard intraoperative procedures and histopathologic techniques of analyzing the SLN to that of the novel approach, it could get higher sensitivity (96%vs 68%,P=0.023;96%vs76%,P=0.049), lower false negative rate (4%vs32% ,P=0.023;4%vs24%,P=0.049) and higher micrometastasis detection rate. 4.Expession of Her2,CD44 and Muc1 in SLN is 32.5%±2.2%,83.4± 4.1% and 86.6%±3.4%, and each has positively correlated with the expression of that in primary tumor (P<0.5).
Conclusion: Our novel approach that utilizing immunobead detection of metastatic breast cancer cells, and simultaneously characterize the isolated cells for membrane markers coated with antibodies targeting Her2, Muc1 or CD44 by flow-cytometry, has rapid speed and high accuracy. Compared to traditional HE and CK-IHC, it has higher sensitivity and lower false negative rate, and could be used more widely and easily. Expression of CD44, Her2 and Muc1 in sentinel lymph nodes were positively correlated with the expression of those in primary tumor. It is suggested that the three biomarkers above could predict metastasis of sentinel lymph nodes, and maybe direct treatment after operation.

Abstract
Background: Recent evidences have suggested that there are a rare population of cells called cancer stem cells (CSCs) in breast cancer, which have the ability of extensive self-renewal and contribute to metastasis and treatment resistance. This study evaluated the effects of an mTOR inhibitor, RAD001 (Everolimus) on breast CSCs of primary breast cancer cells and 2 breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7, MDA-MB-231) in vitro. Methods: Primarily, we isolated primary breast cancer cells from the 1cm3 axenic tissue from breast cancer patients, which was been digested in collagenase typelV in 1-3 hours. After filtration, the cells from the organoid were plated in DMEM/F12(1:1) containing 10% FBS ,100U/ml penicillin,100µg/ml streptomycin and some growth factors overnight. The next day, we sorted CD44 +, CD24-/low, ESA + cells as breast CSCs by flow cytometry from primary breast cancer cells, breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231. And then the three CSCs were treated with different concentrations of docetaxel alone(0,20µM,40µM,80µM, 160µM), mTOR inhibitor RAD001 alone (0,10nM,100nM,1µM,10µM), or in combination with docetaxel(20µM).the Inhibition of the drugs on different Breast CSCs was quantified by methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay. All employed CSCs were divided into four groups, given respectively 24h treatment of RAD001(100nM), docetaxel(20µM), combination or contrals. Apoptosis and distribution of cell cycles were examined with flow cytometry. Experiments were performed in triplicate. Result: All three kinds of breast CSCs were resistant to the standard treatment doses of docetaxel in vitro(IC50=80 µM±5µM),compared with this drug inhibited normal breast cancer cell lines(IC50=16µM±2µM). Treatment with RAD001 resulted in growth inhibition of all employed CSCs in a dose-dependent manner, which is more effective than the treatment with docetaxel alone(P<0.001), and CSCs of MDA-MB-231 proved to be most sensitive to this drug(IC20=8nM).Combination studies showed that there was an additive growth inhibitory effect of a combination treatment on three CSCs in vitro compared with treatment with RAD001 alone (P<0.001)or docetaxel alone(P<0.001). In addition, an increase in G2-M cell cycle arrest were seen in the combination treatment group when compared with controls(P<0.05), suggesting that cell cycle arrest may contribute to the increased growth inhibitory effects of combination treatment seen in this study. In primary CSCs, combined treatment induced a mount-up population of early apoptosis, the phenomenon was not taken place in the treatment of RAD001 alone, however, it's no statistical significance(P>0.05).
Discussion: We conclude that RAD001 has more effective inhibitory effect than docetaxel, and enhances the cytotoxic effects of docetaxel in models of breast CSCs in vitro by inducing cell cycle arrest, indicating that combination treatment with RAD001 and docetaxel may be an efficient therapy for refractory and metastatic breast cancer. But the drug interaction of RAD001 and docetaxel in the clinical situation has to be evaluated in further studies.

Abstract
The prevalence of the newly discovered pneumococcal serotype 6C has increased in some countries since the introduction of seven-valent conjugate pneumococcal vaccine (PCV7). The distribution of invasive serogroup 6 serotypes, in Australia, including 6C and 6D, has not been reported previously. During the period 1999 to 2008, 6097 isolates were referred to the New South Wales Pneumococcal Reference Laboratory for serotyping. Of these, 847 were identified by Quellung reaction as belonging to serogroup 6 and 702 were available for further study. Serotypes were determined by serotype-specific PCR as follows: 6A, 197 (28.1%); 6B, 452 (64.4%); 6C, 52 (7.4%) and one 6D. The average numbers of invasive serogroup 6 isolates, per annum, fell from 62.2 before (2000-2005) to 49.7 after (2006-2008) the introduction of PCV7. The proportions of invasive 6B fell (from 72.4% to 47.3%, p 0.03), those of 6C rose (from 3.3% to 17%, p 0.02) significantly and those of 6A remained fairly constant (24.3% vs 27%, p 0.69) between the two periods. All 6C and 6D and selected 6A and 6B isolates were further characterized by multilocus sequence typing and sequence analysis of cps genes cpsA-cpsB (wzg-wzh) and wchA-wciN(beta) -wciO, wciP. Results showed considerable diversity within serotype 6C, apparently as a result of both mutation and recombination. Sequence typing indicates that, in Australia, 6C has been largely derived from 6A. The genetic diversity and rapid increase in incidence of serotype 6C causing invasive pneumococcal disease has potential implications for vaccine efficacy.

Abstract
Cytosolic fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (cytFBPase) (E.C. 3.1.3.11) catalyzes the first irreversible reaction of daytime sucrose synthesis. A Flaveria linearis (F. linearis) mutant (line 84-9) previously shown to have ~10% wildtype cytFBPase activity contains no cytFBPase activity based on enzymatic and immunoprecipitation analysis. Genetic segregation and Southern analysis of an F2 population shows one gene copy of cytFBPase in F. linearis and linkage of null cytFBPase activity to the cytFBPase structural gene. A point mutation is present in the structural gene coding for cytFBPase in the mutant, causing a cryptic pre-mRNA splice site and a corresponding 24 amino acid deletion spanning the active site of the enzyme. Collectively, these data support the identification of a null-activity mutant for cytFBPase in F. linearis. This is the first report of a null mutant in the daytime sucrose synthesis pathway confirmed by both enzymatic and molecular analysis. Null cytFBPase in F. linearis does not predispose all lines to high starch accumulation due to an epistatic gene interaction; low starch accumulation in null cytFBPase lines segregates with elevated pyrophosphate-dependent phosphofructokinase (PFP) activity when grown in a 16 h photoperiod. Surprisingly, growth of parental lines and F2 progeny having null cytFBPase in continuous light rescued the wildtype growth phenotype. All null cytFBPase lines showed CO(2)-insensitivity/reversed sensitivity of photosynthesis, indicating that null cytFBPase causes a reduced total capacity for both photosynthesis and end-product synthesis regardless of starch and PFP phenotype. Collectively, the data indicate that F. linearis, a C3-C4 photosynthetic intermediate, has alternative cytFBPase-independent pathways for daytime sucrose synthesis.

Abstract
Although the crucial role of human papillomaviruses (HPVs), especially HPV-16 in various cancers has been confirmed, the variation of HPV-16 among different cancers have not been investigated in a specific geographic location. In order to elucidate whether similar HPV-16 variants are involved in different kinds of cancers in the same geographic location, the analysis of sequence variants of E6 and E7 oncogenes and L1 gene of HPV-16 in cervical and lung cancers in Sichuan, China, was carried out. Tissue samples from 122 cervical cancers, 104 lung cancers, and 138 controls were subjected to RT-PCR or PCR, sequencing, and sequence analysis. The infection rates of HPV-16 in cervical, lung cancers, and non-malignant controls were 68.9%, 17.3%, and 37.0%, respectively. Asian prototype variants prevailed in cervical and lung cancers, while European prototype variants in non-malignant controls. In comparison to the lung cancer, cervical cancer showed a much higher diversity of HPV-16 oncogenes. These results indicate that in Sichuan, China, Asian prototype variants of HPV-16 are more pathogenic than their European counterparts.
