Abstract
PM2.5 aerosol samples were collected at Gosan in Jeju Island during six intensive measurement periods between November 2001 and August 2003. In order to investigate the chemical composition of fine particles, major ion components, trace elements, and elemental and organic carbon were analyzed. Quite different seasonal characteristic in the chemical composition of fine particles was observed. The concentration of most secondary aerosol components showed a summer minimum and a winter maximum with higher correlation between them at Gosan. This fact clearly reveals the possibility of long-range transport of such pollutants in winter. On the other hand, OC and EC had the highest concentration and good correlation with ion components, such as K+, Ca2+ in fall. It means that biomass burning could significantly influence the ambient fine carbonaceous particulate in fall, which was primarily long-range transported.

Abstract
Apoptosis-modulating approaches offer an attractive opportunity for therapeutic use for many tumors. We investigated the effects of the roots of Coptis japonica var. dissecta (Ranunculaceae) on human gastric cancer cells, SNU-668. The cytotoxicity of Coptis japonica at 100 microg/ml (methanol extract) by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was 13.89 +/- 1.91% of control value. Considering the features by 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay, it was confirmed that the death of SNU-668 cells was due to apoptosis. In the apoptosis-regulating genes, BCL2 expression was diminished out, whereas BAX and CASP3 expressions were increased, compared with control. Furthermore, the activity of caspase3 was significantly increased by Coptis japonica treatment. These results suggest that Coptis japonica could induce apoptotic anticancer effect through caspase3 activation on SNU-668 human gastric cancer cells.

Abstract
The present work presents a useful comparison of micropore size distributions (MPSDs) obtained from gas adsorption and image analysis of high-resolution transmission electron micrographs. It is shown that the MPSD obtained for a chemical activated carbon is concordant with that obtained from CO2 adsorption. In addition, this technique has allowed us to obtain the MPSD of a carbon molecular sieve (CMS) prepared in our laboratory by a copyrolysis process, which could only be characterized by CO2 adsorption at 273 K (not by N2 adsorption at 77 K due to diffusional problems). The MPSD obtained by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) for the CMS is wider than that obtained by CO2 adsorption, suggesting that HRTEM is detecting the closed porosity existing in this sample, which is not accessible to gas adsorption. The existence of closed porosity in the CMS is explained considering the preparation method used. Thus, HRTEM combined with image analysis seems to be useful for structural analysis of narrow micropores including closed porosity.

Abstract
Nitric oxide is produced enzymatically by the nitric oxide synthase (NOS), which converts L-arginine in the presence of oxygen to L-citrulline and NO. Moreover, it has been reported that asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) acts as is an endogenous inhibitor of endothelial NOS (eNOS) by competing with the enzyme for L-arginine. In this study, we measured L-arginine and ADMA in normal and preeclamptic women, and also investigated the association between the Glu298Asp eNOS gene polymorphism and preeclampsia. Finally, we assessed eNOS expression levels in the placentas of both normal and preeclamptic patients, using Western blot and immunohistochemistry. L-arginine levels were found to be significantly lower in the preeclamptic women than in the normal pregnant women (p=0.02) but there were no significant differences in ADMA levels between the normal and preeclamptic women. We also determined there to be no association between the Glu298Asp eNOS gene and preeclampsia. With regard to placental eNOS expression, we detected a lower degree of eNOS expression in the preeclamptic syncytiotrophoblasts than in the normal syncytiotrophoblasts. We suggest that reduced L-arginine levels, rather than increased ADMA levels, contribute to the development of preeclampsia, and also that decreased placental eNOS expression constitutes a characteristic finding in preeclamptic placentas.

Abstract
Lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 (LOX-1) was originally identified as a receptor for oxidatively modified low-density lipoprotein. It has been reported that oxidative stress and hyperlipidemia play important roles in the etiology of preeclampsia, and that placental oxidative stress may stimulate syncytiotrophoblast apoptosis in preeclampsia. In this study, we examined the expression of LOX-1 in the human placentas of normal pregnancies and in preeclampsia using immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis, and proposed that LOX-1 has a role in trophoblast apoptosis. To analyze apoptotic activity, the expression of the specific caspase cleavage site within cytokeratin 18 was assessed immunohistochemically using the monoclonal antibody M30 CytoDeath. Both LOX-1 and M30 immunoreactivity occurred predominantly in syncytiotrophoblasts. A significantly higher number of LOX-1 and M30-positive cells were found in preeclamptic placentas than in normal placentas. The number of M30-positive cells correlated with the apoptotic index of trophoblasts determined by TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL). Syncytiotrophoblasts showing apoptotic activity were immunopositive to LOX-1 by double immunohistochemical fluorescence. We suggest that the functional role of syncytiotrophoblasts in placental dysfunction results from the localization and upregulation of LOX-1 in the preeclamptic placenta, possible implications in upregulation of syncytiotrophoblast apoptotic activity in preeclampsia.

Abstract
An aggressive variant of adenosarcoma, mullerian adenosarcoma with sarcomatous overgrowth (MASO) in the cervix is extremely rare. This variant contains obvious, high-grade sarcoma in addition to a low-grade form. In this report, we describe a case of MASO of the uterine cervix and review the clinical and pathological features of these tumors. The patient was a 37-year-old woman with a cervical polypoid mass, which was morphologically considered as a benign endocervical polyp. Microscopically, polypoid cervical mass showed diffuse and dense malignant spindle cell proliferation around the benign endocervical glands and also an area of markedly anaplastic and pleomorphic spindle cell proliferation, so called, sarcomatous overgrowth. Total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy with pelvic lymph node dissection were performed. The patient has been followed-up and neither chemotherapy nor other adjuvant therapies have been administered. At present, she has been clinically free of disease for 9 months since she received surgery. It is extremely rare that MASO of the uterine cervix is presented in premenopausal woman. Gynecologists and pathologists should be aware of the difficulties associated with a delay in the diagnosis of MASO when the tumor is present as a benign looking cervical polyp.

Abstract
Transformed root cultures of Artemisia annua grown in autoclaved medium show large variations in biomass and artemisinin production regardless of the culture conditions or clonal type. However, using filter-sterilized sugars singly or in combination while holding the carbon level in the medium constant resulted in an unexpected variability in biomass production and artemisinin yield. Autoclaving results in variable hydrolysis of sucrose in the culture medium. Subsequent experiments using combinations of filter-sterilized sugars at a constant total carbon level in the medium showed a stimulation of artemisinin production by glucose. Growth in sucrose was equivalent to growth in fructose and significantly better than in glucose. These results suggest that sugars may be affecting terpenoid metabolism not only as carbon sources, but also as signal molecules.

Abstract
SUMMARY The incidence of multiple intracranial aneurysms has been reported from 5% to 35%. But over four multiple aneurysms are extremely rare. Sometimes it is very difficult to draw a clear line between ruptured ones and unruptured others especially in multiple aneurysm cases with even distribution of subarachnoid haemorrhage on basal cistern. We present two cases of multiple aneurysms, more than four, which were successfully treated by endovascular coiling at the same time. Our experience suggests an endovascular procedure would be the gold standard of treatment for ruptured multiple intracranial aneurysms.

Abstract
Transient/chronic microenvironmental hypoxia that exists within a majority of solid tumors has been suggested to have a profound influence on tumor growth and therapeutic outcome. Since the functions of novel antioxidant proteins, peroxiredoxin I (Prx I) and II, have been implicated in regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis, it was of our special interest to probe a possible role of Prx I and II in the context of hypoxic tumor microenvironment. Since both Prx I and II use thioredoxin (Trx) as an electron donor and Trx is a substrate for thioredoxin reductase (TrxR), we investigated the regulation of Trx and TrxR as well as Prx expression following hypoxia. Here we show a dynamic change of glutathione homeostasis in lung cancer A549 cells and an up-regulation of Prx I and Trx following hypoxia. Western blot analysis of 10 human lung cancer and paired normal lung tissues also revealed an elevated expression of Prx I and Trx proteins in lung cancer tissues. Immunohistochemical analysis of the lung cancer tissues confirmed an augmented Prx I and Trx expression in cancer cells with respect to the parenchymal cells in adjacent normal lung tissue. Based on these results, we suggest that the redox changes in lung tumor microenvironment could have acted as a trigger for the up-regulation of Prx I and Trx in lung cancer cells. Although the clinical significance of our finding awaits more rigorous future study, preferential augmentation of the Prx I and Trx in lung cancer cells may well represent an attempt of cancer cells to manipulate a dynamic redox change in tumor microenvironment in a manner that is beneficial for their proliferation and malignant progression.

Abstract
Re-circulation artefact developing secondary to vortex flow at the bulb of the internal carotid artery is very difficult to distinguish from true stenotic defect on two-dimensional Fourier transformed time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (2D-FT TOF MRA). The purpose of our study is to identify appropriate distinguishing features of re-circulation artefact. We included 45 extracranial carotid arteries collected from 25 patients who underwent both 2D-FT TOF MRA and contrast medium based angiography. Review of the 45 vessels demonstrated re-circulation artefact in 21 vessels, true stenotic defect in 8 vessels, and no filling defect in 16 vessels on 2D-FT TOF MRA. We compared the findings of re-circulation artefact and true stenotic defect in 29 vessels excluding the 16 vessels without filling defect. The following were evaluated: (1) preservation of posterior wall contour; (2) marginal character of filling defect; (3) darkness of filling defect; (4) involvement of common carotid artery by filling defect; (5) size of filling defect. In four out of the five evaluated items, statistically significant difference was present between re-circulation artefact group and true stenotic defect group (p<0.01 in all four items, chi(2) analysis). Re-circulation artefact demonstrated the preservation of the posterior wall contour (19/21), ill-defined margin (19/21), less dark defect (18/21), and no involvement of the common carotid artery (19/21). On the contrary true stenotic defect demonstrated focal loss of posterior wall contour (8/8), sharp margin (8/8), dark defect (8/8), and involvement of common carotid artery (4/8). No significant difference was noted in the size of the defect between the two groups (p>0.05). The specificity of 2D-FT TOF MRA for carotid stenosis was markedly increased after application of above signs. These distinguishing signs are very helpful in differentiating re-circulation artefact from true stenotic defect.

Abstract
We present a complete systematics (excitation functions and system-size dependences) of global stopping and side flow for heavy ion reactions in the energy range between 0.09A and 1.93A GeV. For the heaviest system, Au+Au, we observe a plateau of maximal stopping extending from about 0.2A to 0.8A GeV with a fast drop on both sides. The degree of stopping, which is shown to remain significantly below the expectations of a full stopping scenario, is found to be highly correlated to the amount of side flow.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE It has been known that maternal oxidative stress during pregnancy plays an important role in fetal growth. However, the association between antioxidant vitamin levels and birth outcomes is not conclusive. We investigated the relationship between maternal serum levels of vitamins C and E during the second trimester and birth weight and length. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING Outpatient-clinic of obstetrics, Ewha Womans University Hospital, South Korea. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The study subjects were 239 healthy, pregnant women who visited an obstetric clinic for antenatal care, and their singleton live births, in Seoul, Korea, between August 2001 and March 2003. We measured the levels of vitamins C and E in maternal serum during the period 24-28 gestational weeks. Each woman was interviewed for dietary intake by trained interviewers during the second trimester. RESULTS The serum concentration of maternal vitamin C during the second trimester was significantly associated with birth weight and length in the group of full-term deliveries. An increase of 1 microg/ml in the serum vitamin C level increased the birth weight by 27.2 g and the birth length by 0.17 cm. When we considered the levels of vitamins C and E together in the relationship with birth weight and length, we found that the heaviest birth weight and the longest birth length belonged to the group of upper vitamin C/upper vitamin E. However, dietary intake estimated by 24-h recall method was not a predictor of the levels of serum vitamins C and E. CONCLUSION We found that maternal serum vitamin C levels during the second trimester were positively correlated with birth weight and length in full-term babies. We also found that birth weight and length were highest when the levels of both vitamins C and E were high. Our results indicate the importance of antioxidant nutrient balance for pregnant women who are exposed to various oxidants through food, drinking water, or inhaled air.

Abstract
SUMMARY A 43-year-old woman was brought to the emergency room due to the sudden onset of severe headache and stuporous consciousness. She had no history of head injury. Computerized tomography scan revealed subarachnoid haemorrhage and left SDH with midline shift of about 10 mm. Cerebral angiography demonstrated anterior communicating artery and right middle cerebral artery bifurcation aneurysms. Her family refused operation due to her religion never to permit blood transfusion. So just aneurysm coiling and medical ICP control was planned. Guglielmi detachable coil (GDCs) embolization of the two aneurysms was successfully performed. She made a neurological recovery after embolization without evacuation of the SDH. She was discharged from hospital with no neurological deficit on day 21. We report our experience of successful GDC embolization on multiple aneurysms without craniotomy even in the selected case of mass effect.

Abstract
Size-segregated measurements of the composition of an aerosol are used to determine the transport of natural and anthropogenic aerosols to the Gosan site in springtime from 2001 to 2002. Although the transport of Asian dust is a well-known phenomenon in springtime, this study shows that not only is soil dust transported into Gosan each spring but so are anthropogenic aerosols, including sulfur, enriched trace metals such as Pb, Zn, Ni, K, S. This study also combines the size- and time-resolved aerosol composition measurements with isentropic, backward air-mass trajectories in order to identify some potential source regions of the anthropogenic aerosols. Finally, four types of transport episodes were identified: (1) anthropogenic pollutants, (2) dust storm mixed with the anthropogenic aerosols, (3) typical dust storms, (4) some sea salt with clean air mass. Overall, in addition to typical soil dust, a large amount of anthropogenic aerosols, whether mixed with the soil dust or not, are transported to Gosan each spring.

Abstract
The reduced incidence of cancer observed in schizophrenia patients may be related to differences in genetic background. It has been suggested that genetic predisposition towards schizophrenia is associated with reduced vulnerability to lung cancer, and p53 gene is one of the candidate genes. We tested the genetic association between schizophrenia and lung cancer by analyzing polymorphic sites in the p53 gene. Genotype and allele frequencies at two polymorphic sites in the p53 gene (BstUI and MspI restriction sites in exon 4 and intron 6, respectively) were studied in Korean schizophrenia (n=179) and lung cancer patients (n=104). Comparisons of the genotype and allele frequencies of the MspI polymorphism revealed significant differences between schizophrenia and lung cancer patients. The results suggest that the p53 polymorphism specifically found in schizophrenia patients may be associated with reduced vulnerability to lung cancer.

Abstract
Detailed studies of the azimuthal dependence of the mean fragment and flow energies in the Au+Au and Xe+CsI systems are reported as a function of incident energy and centrality. Comparisons between data and model calculations show that the flow energy values along different azimuthal directions could be viewed as snapshots of the fireball expansion with different exposure times. For the same number of participating nucleons more transversally elongated participant shapes from the heavier system produce less collective transverse energy. Good agreement with Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck calculations is obtained for a soft nuclear equation of state.

Abstract
The purposes of this study are to obtain information on the leachability of dioxins depending on the samples, to confirm the effect of dissolved humic matter (DHM) on the leachability of dioxins, and to evaluate the suitability of the detoxification treatments specified by the Japanese government for the reduction of leachability of dioxins. In this study, the leachability of dioxins from raw and treated fly ash was evaluated by a 24-hour batch leaching test and by an extraction test repeated three times with DHM solution, whose concentration was determined to be 700 mg-OC/L as an initial concentration based on organic carbon (OC) from adsorption tests of DHM to fly ash. The leaching concentration from fly ash samples having high DHM adsorption capacity was low regardless of pH, and that from samples having relatively low adsorption capacity and high pH was largely increased. Therefore, it is expected that the leachability of dioxins from treated fly ashes would be reduced by avoiding high pH and enhancing the DHM adsorption capacity rather than by using the detoxification method specified. We also confirmed that increase of the leachability of HOPs due to DHM is not as large as known in condition that is composed of three phases of HOPs, DHM, and solid matrix.

Abstract
The Republic of Korea had been free from foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) for 66 years until 15 cases were confirmed between 24 March and 15 April in 2000. The FMD virus isolated in Korea was an O Pan Asia type, which was also responsible for the recent outbreaks in Japan and the U.K. Control measures including the stamping-out of infected animals on neighbouring farms, movement restrictions and emergency vaccination were implemented. The decision to vaccinate was made because the cattle affected were showing severe FMD lesions, there was significant possibility that a large amount of virus had already been shed and conditions at the time seemed to favour wind-borne spread. Also, because the spread was limited to cattle, it was assumed that the use of vaccinations would be more effective than if pigs had been affected. All susceptible animals within 10 km radius of the infected farms were vaccinated with inactivated, double-oil emulsion vaccines. Totals of 860,700 and 661,770 animals were vaccinated during the first and second round of booster vaccinations, and were completed within five months of the first outbreak. The government decided to adopt a let-live policy so that the vaccinated animals were not slaughtered. However, they were placed under movement restrictions and had to be identified and registered. Although there were concerns about the vaccinated animals becoming carriers, extensive serological surveillance using NSP ELISA found no evidence of FMD in the remaining vaccinated population. The use of emergency vaccinations in 2000 is regarded as being a major factor in limiting the spread of FMD and containing the outbreak within a month.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the interaction between the C677T mutation in the 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) genotypes and serum levels of B vitamins on serum homocysteine levels in pregnant women. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTING Ewha Womans University Hospital, Seoul, Korea. SUBJECTS A total of 177 normal pregnant women, 24.6+/-1.1 weeks of gestation, in a 6-month period during 2001-2002. INTERVENTIONS Serum vitamin B2, vitamin B6, and homocysteine analyses were conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography methods. Serum folate and vitamin B12 concentrations were determined using a radioimmunoassay kit. MTHFR gene mutation was investigated by the polymerase chain reaction of a genomic DNA fragment. RESULTS Serum homocysteine was higher in women with the T/T genotype than those with the C/T or C/C genotype of the MTHFR gene (P<0.05). Serum homocysteine was negatively correlated with serum folate in all MTHFR genotypes (P<0.001), and the correlation between the two serum levels was the strongest in the T/T genotype. Serum homocysteine was higher in the subjects with the T/T MTHFR genotype only when the serum folate was below the median level. Explanatory power of B vitamin status as predictors of serum homocysteine levels was more pronounced in the T/T genotypes (68.5%) compared with the C/T (37.9%) or C/C genotypes (20.6%). CONCLUSIONS Serum homocysteine levels in pregnant women varied significantly with MTHFR genotype and the serum B vitamin status. Higher serum folate, vitamin B2, and vitamin B12 concentrations may lessen the MTHFR genotypic effect on serum homocysteine levels.

Abstract
Two new cell cultures from flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus (Temminck & Schlegel), flounder fin (FFN) cells from fin tissue and flounder spleen (FSP) cells from spleen tissue, were established and characterized. The cells multiplied well in Eagle's minimum essential medium, supplemented with 10% foetal bovine serum, and have been subcultured more than 100 times, becoming continuous cell lines. Modal diploid chromosome number of FFN and FSP cells was 64 and 62, respectively. Polymerase chain reaction products were obtained from FFN and FSP cells with primer sets ofmicrosatellite markers of flounder. Optimal growth temperature was 20 degrees C and consisted of epithelioid cells. FFN and FSP cells showed cytopathic effects after inoculation of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus, marine birnavirus, chum salmon virus, infectious haematopoietic necrosis virus, spring viraemia of carp virus and hirame rhabdovirus. Thus these new cell lines may be useful for studying a wide range of fish viruses.

Abstract
We described the construction of a recombinant filamentous phage displaying on its surface the immunodominant site of VP1 protein of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). The coding sequence was inserted at the amino-terminus of the major coat protein pVIII via a spacer. The hybrid phage proved to be antigenic as it was recognized by polyclonal and monoclonal anti FMDV sera. In two experiments involving immunisation of guinea-pigs with the recombinant phage, a low antibody response was generated. This suggests a possible role for phage displayed peptides in inducing anti FMDV immunity and the possibility of further development is discussed.
