A comparison of the care of hypertension in Hunan and Connecticut

The demographic, clinical, and social characteristics of 300 hypertensive patients (150 seen in the Hypertension Clinic at Yale University and 150 seen in a newly opened clinic at the First Affiliated Hospital of the Hunan Medical College) were compared at their initial visit to the clinic. The mean blood pressure of both treated and untreated patients and the frequency of mild hypertension and rarity of secondary causes of hypertension were similar. Americans drank more alcohol and were more likely to be heavy smokers, and the Chinese were older, had more end organ damage, and had many more symptoms. The majority of patients in China (77%) were being treated most often with combination pills containing multiple agents. We feel that hypertensive patients are similar in the United States and China, though the Chinese patients appeared to have been seen at a later stage of their disease.

Human beta:alpha but not gamma interferon binding site is a product of the chromosome 21 interferon action gene

The binding of human interferons to their binding site(s) was measured by the amount of radioiodinated human beta interferon (HuIFNbeta) displaceable by unlabeled human beta, alpha, and gamma interferon (HuIFNbeta, alpha, and gamma). By this approach, HuIFNbeta and HuIFNalpha were found to interact with specific binding sites in cell membranes derived from human cells and mouse-human cell hybrids containing chromosome 21 as their only human chromosome. Specific binding was not observed with cell membranes derived from parental mouse cells or from mouse-human cell hybrids in subsequent generations that have lost human chromosome 21. Although the chromosome 21-positive mouse-human cell hybrids are sensitive to the antiviral effects of HuIFNbeta and HuIFNalpha, they are found to be insensitive to the antiviral effect of HuIFNgamma and to lack specific HuIFNgamma binding sites. These results suggest that the HuIFNbeta and HuIFNalpha but not HuIFNgamma binding sites are coded for by genes located on chromosome 21. The lack of a chromosome 21 gene dosage effect on the inducibility of the antiviral state by HuIFNgamma is consistent with this hypothesis.

Etiologic studies of epidemic hemorrhagic fever (hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome)

Two strains of epidemic hemorrhagic fever (EHF) virus were isolated from the lung tissues of Apodemus agrarius mice that were captured in an area where EHF is endemic. The strains were isolated by passages in A. agrarius mice from a nonendemic area. Identification of the isolates by usual procedures was confirmed by repeated blind tests with coded sera. Contamination with certain known viruses such as reovirus, adenovirus (types 3 and 7), and other pathogens, such as murine typhus rickettsiae and Leptospira, which may be naturally present in wild rodents, appeared to have been ruled out. The antigen slides made from these isolates are in use in the specific diagnosis and seroepidemiologic studies of EHF. The first successful application is the serodiagnosis of a mild type of hemorrhagic fever that occurs with characteristic epidemiologic features in certain provinces of China.
