Abstract
Excessive intake of purine-rich foods elevates serum uric acid levels, making it a risk factor for hyperuricemia. We hypothesized that lactic acid bacteria ingested with food might utilize purines and contribute to their decreased absorption in the intestines, thereby preventing hyperuricemia. We previously reported that Lactobacillus gasseri PA-3 (PA-3) incorporates adenosine/inosine and related purines and that oral ingestion of PA-3 reduced the absorption of these purines in rats. However, it is unclear whether PA-3 also decreases the absorption of other purines, such as guanosine 5'-monophosphate (GMP) and guanosine. This study investigated whether PA-3 incorporates GMP and guanosine and reduces their absorption in rats. PA-3 incorporated both purines, with 14C-GMP uptake being greater than that of 14C-guanosine. Radioactivity in rat blood was significantly lower 30, 45, and 60 minutes after administration of 14C-GMP plus PA-3 than after administration of 14C-GMP alone and was significantly lower 15 minutes after administration of 14C-guanosine plus PA-3 than after administration of 14C-guanosine alone. PA-3 incorporates GMP and guanosine in vitro. Oral administration of PA-3 with GMP and guanosine reduces the intestinal absorption of these purines in vivo. These findings, together with those of previous studies, indicate that PA-3 reduces the absorption of major purines contained in foods. PA-3 may also attenuate the excessive absorption of dietary purines in humans, protecting these individuals against hyperuricemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The hepatic clearance of endotoxin (Et) may reflect hepatic functional reserve and ischemic injury to hepatocytes. Therefore, we examined the relationships between Et activity (EA) and the metrics Pediatric End-Stage Liver Disease (PELD)/Model of End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score and alanine transaminase (ALT) levels in the postoperative period. METHODS We performed 8 living-donor liver transplantations (LDLTs) for biliary atresia at our center from April 2012 to December 2012. EA was measured by means of an Et activity assay (EAA) in samples collected from a vein 1 day before LDLT, from the portal vein during the intraoperative anhepatic phase, from an artery 1 hour after reperfusion, from an artery on postoperative day (POD) 1, and from an artery or vein at PODs 7 and 14. RESULTS EAs generally remained at low levels. EA at the reperfusion period was significantly lowest. The correlation coefficient for the preoperative MELD/PELD score and the EAA was 0.837, and the corresponding P value was .009; thus, there was a significant relationship between the preoperative MELD/PELD score and the EAA. The correlation coefficients for ALT at POD 1 and EA during the anhepatic phase, at 1 hour after reperfusion, and at POD 1 were 0.64, 0.43, and 0.38, respectively, and the P values for these correlations were .08, .67, and .34. Thus, we observed that ALT and EA generally tended to be somewhat directly correlated, but no significant relationships between these 2 metrics were observed. CONCLUSIONS Endotoxin metabolism reflects the hepatic functional reserve capacity of end-stage liver disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Antibody drugs have been used to treat steroid-resistant rejection (SRR) after liver transplantation. Although anti-thymocyte globulin has been used for SRR after liver transplantation in place of muromonab-CD3 since 2011 in Japan, the effectiveness of anti-thymocyte globulin after pediatric living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT) has not yet been reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of antibody drug treatment for SRR after pediatric LDLT in our single center. METHODS Between May 2001 and December 2013, 220 pediatric LDLTs were performed. Initial immunosuppression after LDLT included tacrolimus and methylprednisolone therapy. Acute rejection was diagnosed by use of a liver biopsy and the administration of steroid pulse treatment, and SRR was defined as acute rejection refractory to the steroid pulse treatment. RESULTS Acute rejection and SRR occurred in 74 (33.6%) and 16 patients (7.3%), respectively. The graft survival rates of non-SRR and SRR were 92.4% and 87.5%, respectively (P = .464). The median concentration of alanine aminotransferase before and after the administration of antibody drug was 193.5 mU/mL (range, 8-508) and 78 mU/mL (range, 9-655), respectively (P = .012). The median rejection activity index before and after the administration of antibody drugs was 5 (range, 2-9) and 1 (range, 0-9), respectively (P = .004). After antibody drug treatment, 12 patients had cytomegalovirus infections, 2 patients had Epstein-Barr virus infections, 3 patients had respiratory infections, and 1 patient had encephalitis. The cause of death in 1 patient with SRR was recurrence of infant fulminant hepatic failure. CONCLUSIONS Antibody drug treatment for SRR after pediatric LDLT is safe and effective.

Abstract
Background In cases of acute ischemic stroke, manual aspiration of the thrombus is commonly performed with a balloon guiding catheter placed in the cervical segment of the internal carotid artery (ICA). However, most manual aspirations using a balloon guiding catheter are combined with inner catheters, as in the direct aspiration first pass technique (ADAPT). We experienced some cases of acute ischemic stroke with proximal ICA occlusion due to cardiogenic thrombus where we obtained sufficient recanalization by simple manual aspiration from inflated Optimo 9F balloon catheters (Tokai Medical Products, Japan) placed in the origin of the cervical segment of the ICA without any inner catheter or stent retriever. We perform by preference this procedure, named the simple Aspiration with Balloon Catheter (simple ABC) technique. Herein, we report two recent cases and discuss this procedure. Case presentation Case 1: An 80-year-old man with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation developed left ICA occlusion. We performed the simple ABC technique and obtained a large amount of dark red and white thrombus. Puncture-to-reperfusion time was 14 minutes with Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction (TICI) grade 3. Case 2: A 69-year-old man with chronic atrial fibrillation developed left internal carotid occlusion. We performed the simple ABC technique and obtained a large amount of dark red thrombus. Puncture-to-reperfusion time was 15 minutes with TICI grade 2b. Conclusion The simple ABC technique is useful to deal with a large amount of thrombus, shortens procedure time, enables less invasive thrombectomy, and can shift immediately to subsequent procedures such as delivering a stent retriever or ADAPT.

Abstract
Sound is a sensory stimulant ubiquitously found throughout our environment. Humans have evolved a system that effectively and automatically converts sound sensory inputs into emotions. Although different emotional responses to sounds with different frequency characteristics are empirically recognized, there is a paucity of studies addressing different emotional responses to these sounds and the underlying neural mechanisms. In this study, we examined effects of pure tone (PT) and white noise (WN) inputs at ordinary loudness levels on emotional responses. We found that WN stimuli produced more aversive responses than PT stimuli. This difference was endorsed by larger late posterior positivity (LPP). In a source localization study, we found increased neural activity in the parietal lobe prior to LPP. These findings show that WN stimuli produce aversive perceptions compared with PT stimuli, at typical loudness levels. In addition, different emotional responses were processed in a similar manner as visual stimulations, as reflected by increased LPP activation. Various emotional effects of WN and PT stimuli, at ordinary loudness levels, could expand our understanding of adverse effects of noise as well as favorable effects associated with music.

Abstract
In this study, we identified ecdysteroidogenic enzymes in the cabbage armyworm, Mamestra brassicae, and demonstrated reduced expression of these genes during diapause. Some insects employ a temporary developmental arrest, diapause, to survive in severe environments. The titres of the moulting hormone ecdysteroid were reduced in diapause pupae of M. brassicae; therefore, ecdysteroidogenesis might be suppressed by a diapause-specific mechanism. To clarify expression changes of ecdysteroidogenic enzyme genes during diapause in M. brassicae, we first identified the genes for seven ecdysteroidogenic enzymes: Neverland, Non-molting glossy (Nm-g), CYP307A1 (Spook), CYP306A1 (Phantom), CYP302A1 (Disembodied), CYP315A1 (Shadow) and CYP314A1 (Shade). Enzymatic assays using heterologous expression in Drosophila Schneider 2 (S2) cells and analysis of mRNA distribution indicated that the identified genes were ecdysteroidogenic enzymes of M. brassicae. Expression levels of these ecdysteroidogenic enzyme genes were compared between prothoracic glands in different pupal stages throughout diapause. Immediately after pupation, diapause-destined pupae showed similar expression levels of ecdysteroidogenic enzyme genes to those of nondiapause pupae. All of these genes showed reduced gene expression after diapause initiation. Expression was immediately increased in diapause-destined pupae at the postdiapause quiescence phase. These results indicate that reduced expression of ecdysteroidogenic enzyme genes suppresses ecdysteroidogenesis and maintains developmental arrest during diapause.

Abstract
It is well accepted that frequent and heavy intake of purine-rich foods causes elevation of serum uric acid levels, which is a risk factor of hyperuricemia. Reducing intestinal absorption of dietary purines may attenuate the elevation of serum uric acid levels and exacerbation of hyperuricemia. This reduction may be achieved by the ingestion of lactic acid bacteria that take up purines in the intestine. In this study, we investigated the degree of uptake and utilization of purines of three lactobacilli strains. Among them, Lactobacillus gasseri PA-3 (PA-3) showed the greatest incorporation of 14C-adenine. PA-3 also incorporated 14C-adenosine and 14C-AMP. Additionally, using defined growth medium, PA-3 demonstrated greater proliferation in the presence of these purines than in their absence. Although further investigation is required, ingestion of PA-3 may lower serum uric acid levels by reducing intestinal absorption of purines in humans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although there have been a few reports describing the changes of graft liver and spleen volumes after liver transplantation (LT), little is known about the relationship between graft liver function and the changes of these volumes after technical variant liver transplantation (TVLT). We therefore performed a retrospective study to investigate the relationship between graft liver function and these volumes after TVLT. METHODS We retrospectively investigated the cases of 140 TVLT procedures that were performed in our department between July 1987 and October 2012 and in which follow-up was conducted at our department. We calculated the graft liver volume to standard liver volume (GV/SLV) ratio, the spleen volume to standard spleen volume (SV/SSV) ratio, and the spleen volume to graft liver volume (S/L) ratio by CT volumetry. We clarified the relationship between graft liver function (according to the pathological findings) and the graft liver and spleen volumes at 2, 5, and 10 years after TVLT. RESULTS In the normal liver function group, the GV/SLV, SV/SSV, and S/L ratios decreased until 6 months after TVLT and then converged at 10 years after TVLT to 0.95, 1.27, and 0.27, respectively. In the graft liver failure group, the GV/SLV, SV/SSV, and S/L ratios at 10 years after TVLT were 0.67, 5.01, and 1.55, respectively. A significant correlation was observed between the GV/SLV ratio and the presence of mild liver fibrosis at 2 and 5 years after TVLT (P = .03 and P = .04, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Post-transplant CT-volumetry is a noninvasive and effective means of evaluating graft liver status.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although hepatic vein stenosis after liver transplantation is a rare complication, the complication rate of 1% to 6% is higher in pediatric living-donor liver transplantation than that in other liver transplantation cases. Diagnosis is very important because this complication can cause hepatic congestion that develops to liver cirrhosis, graft loss, and patient loss. However, this is unlikely in cases where there are no ascites or hypoalbuminemia. OBJECTIVES Eleven of 167 patients who had undergone pediatric living-donor liver transplantation were identified in the outpatient clinic at Jichi Medical University as having suffered from hepatic vein stenosis, and were enrolled in the study. METHODS We conducted a retrospective study in which we reviewed historical patient records to investigate the parameters for diagnosis and examine treatment methods and outcomes. RESULTS The 11 patients were treated with 16 episodes of balloon dilatation. Three among these received retransplantation and another 2 cases required the placement of a metallic stent at the stenosis. Histological examination revealed severe fibrosis in four of nine patients who had a liver biopsy, with mild fibrosis revealed in the other five grafts. Furthermore, hepatomegaly and splenomegaly diagnosed by computed tomography, elevated levels of hyarulonic acid, and/or a decrease in calcineurin inhibitor clearance were found to be pathognomonic at diagnosis, and tended to improve after treatment. CONCLUSIONS Diagnosis of hepatic vein stenosis after liver transplantation can be difficult, so careful observation is crucial to avoid the risk of acute liver dysfunction. Comprehensive assessment using volumetry of the liver and spleen and monitoring of hyarulonic acid levels and/or calcineurin inhibitor clearance, in addition to some form of imaging examination, is important for diagnosis and evaluation of the effectiveness of therapy.

Abstract
Despite the fact that phase-change materials are widely used for data storage, no consensus exists on the unique mechanism of their ultrafast phase change and its accompanied large and rapid optical change. By using the pump-probe observation method combining a femtosecond optical laser and an x-ray free-electron laser, we substantiate experimentally that, in both GeTe and Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5} crystals, rattling motion of mainly Ge atoms takes place with keeping the off-center position just after femtosecond-optical-laser irradiation, which eventually leads to a higher symmetry or disordered state. This very initial rattling motion in the undistorted lattice can be related to instantaneous optical change due to the loss of resonant bonding that characterizes GeTe-based phase change materials. Based on the amorphous structure derived by first-principles molecular dynamics simulation, we infer a plausible ultrafast amorphization mechanism via nonmelting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Humans spend more than one-fourth of their life sleeping, and sleep quality has been significantly linked to health. However, the objective examination of ambulatory sleep quality remains a challenge, since sleep is a state of unconsciousness, which limits the reliability of self-reports. Therefore, a non-invasive, continuous, and objective method for the recording and analysis of naturalistic sleep is required. OBJECTIVE Portable sleep recording devices provide a suitable solution for the ambulatory analysis of sleep quality. In this study, the performance of two activity-based sleep monitors (Actiwatch and MTN-210) and a single-channel electroencephalography (EEG)-based sleep monitor (SleepScope) were compared in order to examine their reliability for the assessment of sleep quality. METHODS Twenty healthy adults were recruited for this study. First, data from daily activity recorded by Actiwatch and MTN-210 were compared to determine whether MTN-210, a more affordable device, could yield data similar to Actiwatch, the de facto standard. In addition, sleep detection ability was examined using data obtained by polysomnography as reference. One simple analysis included comparing the sleep/wake detection ability of Actiwatch, MTN-210, and SleepScope. Furthermore, the fidelity of sleep stage determination was examined using SleepScope in finer time resolution. RESULTS The results indicate that MTN-210 demonstrates an activity pattern comparable to that of Actiwatch, although their sensitivity preferences were not identical. Moreover, MTN-210 provides assessment of sleep duration comparable to that of the wrist-worn Actiwatch when MTN-210 was attached to the body. SleepScope featured superior overall sleep detection performance among the three methods tested. Furthermore, SleepScope was able to provide information regarding sleep architecture, although systemic bias was found. CONCLUSION The present results suggest that single-channel EEG-based sleep monitors are the superior option for the examination of naturalistic sleep. The current results pave a possible future use for reliable portable sleep assessment methods in an ambulatory rather than a laboratory setting.

Abstract
In a district of Japanese pear cultivators, a questionnaire survey and an IgE antibody survey were conducted on the pollinosis. A high prevalence of 36.3 % of the farmers complained of pollinosis symptoms. By the IgE antibody survey, the symptoms were found to be related to the airborne pollens in the orchard.

Abstract
Etiology of narcolepsy-cataplexy involves multiple genetic and environmental factors. While the human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DRB1*15:01-DQB1*06:02 haplotype is strongly associated with narcolepsy, it is not sufficient for disease development. To identify additional, non-HLA susceptibility genes, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using Japanese samples. An initial sample set comprising 409 cases and 1562 controls was used for the GWAS of 525,196 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located outside the HLA region. An independent sample set comprising 240 cases and 869 controls was then genotyped at 37 SNPs identified in the GWAS. We found that narcolepsy was associated with a SNP in the promoter region of chemokine (C-C motif) receptor 1 (CCR1) (rs3181077, P=1.6×10(-5), odds ratio [OR]=1.86). This rs3181077 association was replicated with the independent sample set (P=0.032, OR=1.36). We measured mRNA levels of candidate genes in peripheral blood samples of 38 cases and 37 controls. CCR1 and CCR3 mRNA levels were significantly lower in patients than in healthy controls, and CCR1 mRNA levels were associated with rs3181077 genotypes. In vitro chemotaxis assays were also performed to measure monocyte migration. We observed that monocytes from carriers of the rs3181077 risk allele had lower migration indices with a CCR1 ligand. CCR1 and CCR3 are newly discovered susceptibility genes for narcolepsy. These results highlight the potential role of CCR genes in narcolepsy and support the hypothesis that patients with narcolepsy have impaired immune function.

Abstract
The neutron source of BNCT is currently changing from reactor to accelerator, but peripheral facilities such as a dose-planning system and blood boron analysis have still not been established. To evaluate the potential application of particle-induced gamma-ray emission (PIGE) for boron measurement in clinical boron neutron capture therapy, boronophenylalanine dissolved within a cell culture medium was measured using PIGE. PIGE detected 18 μgB/mL f-BPA in the culture medium, and all measurements of any given sample were taken within 20 min. Two hours of f-BPA exposure was required to create a boron distribution image. However, even though boron remained in the cells, the boron on the cell membrane could not be distinguished from the boron in the cytoplasm.

Abstract
We report a case of difficult airway management (DAM) with the ossification of anterior longitudinal ligament (OALL). A 66-year-old man complained of pharyngeal discomfort. He was diagnosed with OALL, and planned to have a surgery under general anesthesia. We expected DAM due to the limitation of cervical mobility and airway obstruction caused by OALL. We succeeded in awake intubation with video laryngoscope and tracheal tube introducer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thyroid hormone receptors are divided into 2 functional types: TRα and TRβ. Thyroid hormone receptors play pivotal roles in the developing brain, and disruption of thyroid hormone receptors can produce permanent behavioral abnormality in animal models and humans. METHODS Here we examined behavioralchanges, regional monoamine metabolism, and expression of epigenetic modulatory proteins, including acetylated histone H3 and histone deacetylase, in the developing brain of TRα-disrupted (TRα (0/0) ) and TRβ-deficient (TRβ (-/-) ) mice. Tissue concentrations of dopamine, serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) and their metabolites in the mesocorticolimbic pathway were measured. RESULTS TRβ (-/-) mice, a model of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, showed significantly high exploratory activity and reduced habituation, whereas TRα (0/0) mice showed normal exploratory activity. The biochemical profiles of dopamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine showed significantly low dopamine metabolic rates in the caudate putamen and nucleus accumbens and overall low 5-hydroxytryptamine metabolic rates in TRβ (-/-) mice, but not in TRα (0/0) mice. Furthermore, the expression of acetylated histone H3 was low in the dorsal raphe of TRβ (-/-) mice, and histone deacetylase 2/3 proteins were widely increased in the mesolimbic system. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that TRβ deficiency causes dysfunction of the monoaminergic system, accompanied by epigenetic disruption during the brain maturation process.

Abstract
Surgical lysis of the thickened arachnoid membrane is the first choice of treatment in spinal arachnoid pathologies that cause flow disturbances or blockage of CSF. However, it is important to consider that while extensive lysis of the arachnoid may temporarily provide a wide pathway for CSF, an extensive lytic procedure may later cause secondary adhesion. Thus, it is ideal for the proper extent of the arachnoid lysis to be determined after careful analysis of regional CSF flow. The authors report their limited experience with intraoperative visualization of CSF flow in spinal arachnoid pathologies. Two patients with a dorsal arachnoid web (DAW) with cervical syringomyelia and 1 patient with focal adhesive arachnoiditis causing edema of the spinal cord were surgically treated at the authors' institution between 2007 and 2013. In all cases, the presence of a DAW or focal adhesive arachnoiditis was suspected from the findings on MRI, namely 1) an indentation on the upper thoracic spinal cord and 2) syringomyelia and/or edema of the spinal cord above the indentation. Exploratory surgery disclosed a transversely thickened arachnoid septum on the dorsal side of the indented cord. To prove blockage of the CSF by the septum and to decide on the extent of arachnoid lysis, regional CSF flow around the arachnoid septum was visualized by subarachnoid injection of gentian violet solution close to the web. Injected dye stagnated just close to the arachnoid septum in all cases, and these findings documented CSF blockage by the septum. In 2 cases, a 2-minute observation showed that the injected dye stayed close to the web without diffusion. The authors performed not only resection of the web itself but also lysis of the thickened arachnoid on both sides of the spinal cord to make a CSF pathway on the ventral side. In the third case, the dye stagnated close to the web at first but then diffused through the nerve root to the ventral CSF space. The lysis procedure was completed after exclusive removal of the dorsal web. Postoperative MR images confirmed reduction of the syrinx and/or improvement of the edema in all cases, suggesting that the extent of arachnoid lysis was optimal in each case. No adverse effect was observed after subarachnoid injection of gentian violet. The authors believe that their technique of visualizing regional CSF flow will be helpful to decide the optimal extent of lysis in some local arachnoid pathologies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The articularis genus muscle pulls the suprapatellar pouch upwards when the knee joint is extended, preventing mechanical impingement of the joint capsule which theoretically could cause anterior knee pain. However, few anatomical studies have addressed this muscle. Here we present the precise morphology of articularis genus. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 22 (13 male and 9 female) adult cadavers with no pathological conditions in the knee joints were examined during educational dissection at Nagoya City University Medical School in 2012. After exclusion of 4 joints due to their flexion contracture, 40 knee joints (18 right and 22 left) were analysed. We performed statistical analysis on anatomical laterality and the difference of sizes among lateral, medial and central branches and studied the correlation of the length and area of the articularis genus muscle to the lengthand cross-section area of the femur. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The average number of branches of the deep layer of the articularis genus muscle was 2.7 ± 0.5, the mean length of all brancheswas 5.4 ± 1.3 cm and the mean area of all branches was 5.5 ± 2.6 cm². There was no significant correlation between the length and area of the articularis genus muscle to the length and cross-section area of the femur. There was no significant laterality in central, medial and lateral branches; however we found that the medial branch was statistically longer and larger than the lateral branchon either knee. This could be contributing to prevention of lateral dislocation of the patella.

Abstract
Sleep is known to be essential for proper cognitive functioning. Sleep disturbance, especially respiratory disturbance during sleep, is a risk factor for the development of dementia. However, it is not known whether hypopnoea during sleep is related to severity of cognitive function in patients already diagnosed with dementia. Considering the high prevalence of sleep problems in aged people, it is important to determine if hypopnoea during sleep contributes to dementia. In addition, it would be desirable to develop a feasible method for objectively evaluating sleep in patients with dementia. For this purpose, a simple sleep recorder that employs single or dual bioparameter recording, which is defined as a type-4 portable monitor, is suitable. In this study, a type-4 sleep recorder was used to evaluate respiratory function during sleep in 111 patients with dementia, and data suggesting a possible relationship with cognitive function levels were examined. Multivariate logistic regression was used to investigate the association of severity of dementia with sleep-disordered breathing, age, diabetes, dyslipidaemia and hypertension. It was found that the respiratory disturbance index was associated with severity of cognitive dysfunction in our subjects. Furthermore, patients younger than 80 years were more susceptible to lower cognitive function associated with sleep-disordered breathing than patients 80 years old or over, because an increase in the respiratory disturbance index was associated with deteriorated cognitive function only in the former age group. These results suggest that proper treatment of sleep apnea is important for the preservation of cognitive function, especially in patients with early-stage dementia.

Abstract
Functional connectivity is of central importance in understanding brain function. For this purpose, multiple time series of electric cortical activity can be used for assessing the properties of a network: the strength, directionality, and spectral characteristics (i.e., which oscillations are preferentially transmitted) of the connections. The partial directed coherence (PDC) of Baccala and Sameshima (2001) is a widely used method for this problem. The three aims of this study are: (1) To show that the PDC can misrepresent the frequency response under plausible realistic conditions, thus defeating the main purpose for which the measure was developed; (2) To provide a solution to this problem, namely the "isolated effective coherence" (iCoh), which consists of estimating the partial coherence under a multivariate autoregressive model, followed by setting all irrelevant associations to zero, other than the particular directional association of interest; and (3) To show that adequate iCoh estimators can be obtained from non-invasively computed cortical signals based on exact low resolution electromagnetic tomography (eLORETA) applied to scalp EEG recordings. To illustrate the severity of the problem with the PDC, and the solution achieved by the iCoh, three examples are given, based on: (1) Simulated time series with known dynamics; (2) Simulated cortical sources with known dynamics, used for generating EEG recordings, which are then used for estimating (with eLORETA) the source signals for the final connectivity assessment; and (3) EEG recordings in rats. Lastly, real human recordings are analyzed, where the iCoh between six cortical regions of interest are calculated and compared under eyes open and closed conditions, using 61-channel EEG recordings from 109 subjects. During eyes closed, the posterior cingulate sends alpha activity to all other regions. During eyes open, the anterior cingulate sends theta-alpha activity to other frontal regions.

Abstract
Iron is an essential nutrient for living cells; however, an excessive accumulation of iron leads to organ damage and directly affects systemic immunity. Iron overload is clinically classified as hereditary or secondary. Most of secondary iron overload is caused by frequent blood transfusions because there is no active mechanism to excrete iron from the body. As recommended in various guidelines, chelation therapy is effective for reducing iron burden and improving organ function. There have been few reports on iron overload through blood transfusion during the perioperative period of liver transplantation. This report presents a case of iron overload due to repeated transfusions after pediatric liver transplantation managed by chelation therapy. The patient, an 11-month-old female with biliary atresia, underwent living donor liver transplantation. She revealed refractory anemia and required frequent blood transfusion. Both serum ferritin and transferrin saturation tended to increase after repeated transfusions, leading to secondary iron overload. Iron chelation therapy was started to prevent progression to organ failure and infection due to iron overload, and yielded a favorable outcome. It is crucial to consider the possibility of secondary iron overload and to achieve early detection and treatment to avoid progression to irreversible organ damage.

Abstract
A 70 mm diameter 70 mm long compact ion source equipped with a hollow sputtering target has been designed and tested. The hollow sputtering target serves as the radio frequency (RF) plasma excitation electrode at 13.56 MHz. A stable beam of Cu(+) has been extracted when Ar was used as the discharge support gas. In the extracted beam, Cu(+) had occupied more than 85% of the total ion current. Further increase in Cu(+) ions in the beam is anticipated by increasing the RF power and Ar pressure.

Abstract
Malignant melanoma (MM) is one of the most aggressive cancers in dogs and in humans. However, the molecular mechanisms of its development and progression remain unclear. Presently, we examined the expression profile of microRNAs (miRs) in canine oral MM tissues and paired normal oral mucosa tissues by using the microRNA-microarray assay and quantitative RT-PCR. Importantly, a decreased expression of miR-203 was significantly associated with a shorter survival time. Also, miR-203 and -205 were markedly down-regulated in canine and human MM cell lines tested. Furthermore, the ectopic expression of miR-205 had a significant inhibitory effect on the cell growth of canine and human melanoma cells tested by targeting erbb3. Our data suggest that miR-203 is a new prognostic factor in canine oral MMs and that miR-205 functions as a tumour suppressor by targeting erbb3 in both canine and human MM cells.

Abstract
The glutathione S-transferase (GST) superfamily is involved in the detoxification of various xenobiotics. A silkworm GST, belonging to a previously reported Epsilon-class GST family, was identified, named bmGSTE, cloned, and produced in Escherichia coli. Investigation of this enzyme's properties showed that it was able to catalyse glutathione (GSH) with 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene and ethacrynic acid, and also that it possessed GSH-dependent peroxidase activity. The enzyme's highly conserved amino acid residues, including Ser11, His53, Val55, Ser68 and Arg112, were of interest regarding their possible involvement in its catalytic activity. These residues were replaced with alanine by site-directed mutagenesis and subsequent kinetic analysis of bmGSTE mutants indicated that His53, Val55, and Ser68 were important for enzyme function.

Abstract
To determine whether treatment with various antidepressants or mood stabilizers leads to region-specific changes, we investigated the effects of their subchronic (14 days of intraperitoneal injection) administration on the tissue concentration of monoamines, dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, and the protein expression of acetylated histone H3 (AcH3) and histone deacetylases (HDACs) in the mouse striatum (ST), nucleus accumbens (Acb), hippocampus (Hip), cingulate cortex (Cg), and amygdala (Amy). Subchronic administration with the antidepressants (S)-citalopram oxalate (ECM), duloxetine hydrochloride (DLX), and mirtazapine (MIR) commonly induced significant increases in dopamine and serotonin levels in the ST and Cg. By contrast, no common profiles for dopamine, serotonin, or norepinephrine were identified in the Acb, Hip, or Amy. Treatment with sodium valproate (VPA), lithium chloride (Li), lamotrigine (LTG), levetiracetam (LTM), olanzapine (OLZ), clozapine (CLZ), clomipramine (CLM), ECM, and DLX induced significant increases in AcH3 expression in the Acb, while treatment with CLM, ECM, DLX, MIR, carbamazepine (CBZ), LTG, LTM, OLZ, or CLZ induced significant increases in HDAC2 and HDAC3 in the ST. CLM, MIR, VPA, CBZ, LTG, LTM, OLZ, or CLZ induced significant increases in HDAC3 in the Cg, and ECM, DLX, MIR, VPA, CBZ, LTG, LTM, or OLZ resulted in significant increases in HDAC5 in the Amy. Collectively, the changes of monoamine content were restricted for mood stabilizer effects, but increased expression of HDAC2, HDAC3, or HDAC5 in the ST, Cg, or Amy was often found, supporting the possibility that antidepressant-like effects involve epigenetic modifications associated with changes in HDAC expression.

Abstract
There are currently 2 major therapeutic options for the treatment of hepatic artery complications: endovascular intervention and open surgery. We herein report a retrospective analysis of 14 pediatric patients with hepatic artery complications after pediatric living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) at our institution. We divided them into an open surgery group and an endovascular intervention group based on their primary treatment, and compared the results and outcomes. We then evaluated which procedure is more effective and less invasive. In the open surgery group, recurrent stenosis or spasm of the hepatic artery occurred in 3 of the 8 patients (37.5%). In the endovascular intervention group, 5 of the 6 patients were technically successfully treated by only endovascular treatment. Of the 5 successfully treated patients, 3 developed recurrent stenosis (60%). There were significant differences in the mean length of the operation for the first treatment of hepatic artery complications (open surgery, 428 minutes vs endovascular intervention, 160 minutes; P = .01) and in the mean value of the posttreatment aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (open surgery > endovascular intervention; P = .04/.05). Although endovascular intervention needs to be examined in further studies to reduce the rate of relapse, it is a less invasive method for the patient and graft than open surgery.
