Abstract
Critical ultrasonography(CUS) is different from the traditional diagnostic ultrasound, the examiner and interpreter of the image are critical care medicine physicians. The core content of CUS is to evaluate the pathophysiological changes of organs and systems and etiology changes. With the idea of critical care medicine as the soul, it can integrate the above information and clinical information, bedside real-time diagnosis and titration treatment, and evaluate the therapeutic effect so as to improve the outcome. CUS is a traditional technique which is applied as a new application method. The consensus of experts on critical ultrasonography in China released in 2016 put forward consensus suggestions on the concept, implementation and application of CUS. It should be further emphasized that the accurate and objective assessment and implementation of CUS requires the standardization of ultrasound image acquisition and the need to establish a CUS procedure. At the same time, the standardized training for CUS accepted by critical care medicine physicians requires the application of technical specifications, and the establishment of technical specifications is the basis for the quality control and continuous improvement of CUS. Chinese Critical Ultrasound Study Group and Critical Hemodynamic Therapy Collabration Group, based on the rich experience of clinical practice in critical care and research, combined with the essence of CUS, to learn the traditional ultrasonic essence, established the clinical application technical specifications of CUS, including in five parts: basic view and relevant indicators to obtain in CUS; basic norms for viscera organ assessment and special assessment; standardized processes and systematic inspection programs; examples of CUS applications; CUS training and the application of qualification certification. The establishment of applied technology standard is helpful for standardized training and clinical correct implementation. It is helpful for clinical evaluation and correct guidance treatment, and is also helpful for quality control and continuous improvement of CUS application.

Abstract
Objective: This study was aimed at investigating the levels and relationships of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptor(VEGFR) in the bone marrow mononuclear cells (MNC) of chronic mountain sickness (CMS). Methods: A total of 34 patients with CMS and 30 controls residing at altitudes of 3 000-4 500 m were recruited for this study. The levels of VEGF, VEGFR1 and VEGFR2 in bone marrow MNC were detected by flow cytometry technique and RT-qPCR. Results: The percentage of VEGFR2 positive cells in the bone marrow MNC of CMS were higher than that of the controls[20.7% (8.1%, 67.6%) vs 8.1% (2.2%, 14.9%), P<0.05], but that of VEGFR1-positive and VEGF-positive were similar in CMS and controls. The mRNA levels of VEGFR2 were higher in the bone marrow MNC of CMS than in the controls[1.7(1.0, 5.1) vs 1.0(0.4, 2.7), P<0.05], while VEGF and VEGFR1 mRNA levels were similar between the two groups. The percentage of VEGFR2 positive cells in CMS were significantly correlated with hemoglobin (r=0.453, P=0.007) and the percentage of VEGF-positive cells (r=0.373, P=0.030). Conclusions: Bone marrow MNC of CMS may show enhanced activity of the VEGF-VEGFR2 pathway, and it appears to be involved in the pathogenesis of CMS.

Abstract
Due to regulations on bisphenol A (BPA) in many countries, a variety of bisphenol analogues are being widely manufactured and applied. However, there is a big knowledge gap on bioaccumulation and biomagnification of these emerging bisphenols in aquatic organisms. The bioaccumulation and magnification of nine bisphenol analogues in aquatic organisms at different trophic levels collected from Taihu Lake, China, were evaluated. The total concentrations of the nine bisphenols in the lake waters were in the range of 49.7-3480ng/L (mean, 389ng/L). BPA, bisphenol AF (BPAF) and bisphenol S (BPS) were the most predominant analogues in the water. The mean natural logarithm bioaccumulation factor (log BAFs) of BPAF, bisphenol C (BPC), bisphenol Z (BPZ) and bisphenol E (BPE) were greater than BPA, and there was a significantly positive correlation between log BAFs of the biphenols and their octanol-water partition coefficients (log Kow). The trophic magnification factors of BPAF, BPC and BPZ were 2.52, 2.69 and 1.71, respectively, suggesting that they had the potential to biomagnify in the food web. The results of this study call for further investigations on risk assessment of these emerging pollutants in the environment.

Abstract
Objective: To observe the value of evaluating the coronary collateral circulation of chronic total occlusion (CTO) by transluminal attenuation gradient (TAG) and Rentrop grading, and analyze the influencing factors for coronary collateral circulation. Methods: A total of 179 CTO patients admitted to Beijing Anzhen hospital during June 2013 to August 2016 were included in this study. All patients received coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) examination before coronary angiography. Finally, 75 patients (79 vessels) were enrolled.Patients were divided into two groups on the basis of Rentrop classification. The Rentrop 3 was defined as a well-developed coronary collateral circulation group, including 50 CTO vessels, Rentrop 2 or below was defined as poorly-developed collateral circulation group, including 29 vessels.TAG values in patients with various Rentrop grades were analyzed.Univariate and multivariate analysis were used to determine the predictors of collateral circulation. Results: TAG increased consistently in proportion to the angiographic extent of collateral flow (TAG was (-33.6±24.4), (-16.5±15.7) and (-12.8±15.8) HU/10 mm in patients with Rentrop grade 0 or 1, 2 and 3, respectively, P=0.007). Number of good collateral circulation vessels predicted by TAG≥15.6 HU/10 mm was 45(57.0%, 45/79), and 50 (63.3%, 50/79) by Rentrop grade (P=0.383). Prevalence of diabetes was significantly lower (20.8%(10/48) vs. 48.1%(13/27), P=0.01), while history of previous myocardial infarction (MI) was significantly higher (35.4%(17/48) vs. 11.1%(3/27), P=0.02) in patients with good collateral circulation than in patients with poor collateral circulation. The TAG of the good collateral circulation group was significantly higher than in poorly collateral circulation group ((-12.8±15.8) HU/10 mm vs. (-21.2±19.6) HU/10mm, P=0.041). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that history of MI (OR=0.196, 95%CI 0.041-0.936, P=0.041) and diabetes(OR=6.604, 95%CI 1.726-25.274, P=0.006) were independent predictors of coronary collateral circulation. Conclusions: TAG could be used to evaluate status of coronary collateral circulation.Presence of MI history and absence of diabetes history are the two independent predictors of well-developed coronary collateral circulation in CTO patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an antifibrinolytic drug widely used to reduce blood loss during joint replacements, including total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, there is no final consensus regarding the composition of an optimal administration of TXA regime between topical and systemic (intravenous). The purpose of our study was to compare the efficacy of topical and intravenous (IV) regimen of TXA during TKA and THA. METHODS Five relevant electronic online databases, PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science and Chinese Biomedical Database were systematically searched in November 2015. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared topical with intravenous TXA in patients with TKA or THA were included. The search terms included "topical," "intravenous," "tranexamic acid," "knee arthroplasty" and "hip arthroplasty." Two reviewers independently extracted data and assessed the risk of bias and study quality. Data were analyzed with Review Manager 5.3 software. Grades of Recommendation Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) were used to assess the quality of evidence. RESULTS Sixteen RCTs with 1250 patients undergoing TKA and 4 RCTs involving 550 patients undergoing THA were included. There were no significant differences in total blood loss (mean difference [MD]TKA = -28.72 mL, 95% confidence interval [CI] -195.97 to 138.54 mL, P = 0.74; MDTHA = 14.03 mL, 95% CI -35.53 to 63.59 mL; P = 0.78), total drain out (MDTKA = -3.09 mL, 95% CI -39.05 to 32.88 mL; P = 0.87; MDTHA -31.00 mL, 95% CI -66.56 to 4.66 mL; P = 0.09), and transfusion rates (ORTKA = 0.90, 95% CI 0.58-1.40, P = 0.64; ORTHA = 1.19, 95% CI 0.67-2.09; P = 0.63) between topical and intravenous (IV) TXA. CONCLUSIONS The current evidence suggested that topical TXA was equally effective and safe compared with intravenous TXA in reducing blood loss and transfusion rate following TKA or THA. We recommended that either topically or systemically could be used in TKA and THA to decrease perioperative blood loss.

Abstract
Recently, there have been increasingly hot debates on whether a bulk Fermi surface of charge-neutral excitations exists in the topological Kondo insulator SmB_{6}. To unambiguously resolve this issue, we perform the low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements of a high-quality SmB_{6} single crystal down to 0.1 K and up to 14.5 T. Our experiments show that the residual linear term of thermal conductivity at the zero field is zero, within the experimental accuracy. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity is insensitive to the magnetic field up to 14.5 T. These results demonstrate the absence of fermionic charge-neutral excitations in bulk SmB_{6}, such as scalar Majorana fermions or spinons and, thus, exclude the existence of a bulk Fermi surface suggested by a recent quantum oscillation study of SmB_{6}. This puts a strong constraint on the explanation of the quantum oscillations observed in SmB_{6}.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to identify candidate genes and critical pathways involved in osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS Gene expression data of synovial membrane from OA patients and normal controls (NCs) were downloaded from database. Totally, 15 OA and 14 NC chips were available. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified through limma package (log2 fold change >0.585, false discovery rate (FDR) < 0.05), and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed using STRING. Moreover, perturbation and pathway enrichment analyses were performed through PerturbationAnalyzer in Cytoscape (iterative criteria <1×e-10) and clusterProfiler package (FDR <0.05), respectively. RESULTS Totally, 236 up-regulated and 290 down-regulated DEGs were identified. In PPI network, 10 hub genes were found, including VEGFA, IL6, JUN, IL1B, ICAM1, ATF3, IL8, EGR1, CDKN1A, and JUNB. After perturbation analysis, 32 DEGs were passively and significantly changed, like PISD, RARRES3, EIF4G1, and EPHA3. Furthermore, 526 DEGs were enriched in 176 pathways, and pathway cross-talk network was constructed, involving 12 pathways and 66 cross-talks. CONCLUSIONS Pathways like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoclast differentiation, and cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction might play critical roles in OA, and previously unreported genes VEGFA, JUN, JUNB, PISD, RARRES3, EIF4G1, and EPHA3 might participate in OA, providing novel directions for drug targeting.

Abstract
Oxygen is essential for aerobic life, and hypoxia has very severe consequences. Organisms need to overcome low oxygen levels to maintain biological functions during normal development and in disease states. The mechanism underlying the hypoxic response has been widely investigated in model animals such as Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans. Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF), a key gene product in the response to oxygen deprivation, is primarily regulated by prolyl hydroxylase domain enzymes (PHDs). However, recent findings have uncovered novel HIF-independent functions of PHDs. This review provides an overview of how invertebrates are able to sustain hypoxic damages, and highlights some recent discoveries in the regulation of cellular signalling by PHDs. Given that some core genes and major pathways are evolutionarily conserved, these research findings could provide insight into oxygen-sensitive signalling in mammals, and have biomedical implications for human diseases.

Abstract
Etheno-DNA adducts are generated by interaction of cellular DNA with exogenous environmental carcinogens and end products of lipid peroxidation. It has been determined that 1,N(6)-etheno-2'-deoxyadenosine (εdA) and 3,N(4)-etheno-2'-deoxycytidine (εdC) adducts formed in human white blood cells can be used to serve as biomarkers of genetic damage mediated by oxidative stress. In this study, we developed an ultrasensitive ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method used to detect and quantify εdA and dC adducts in human white blood cells. The percent recoveries of εdA and dC adducts were found to be 88.9% ± 2.8 and 95.7% ± 3.7, respectively. The detection limits were ∼ 1.45 fmol for εdA and ∼ 1.27 fmol for εdC in 20 μg of human white blood cell DNA samples, both εdA and εdC adducts could be detected using only ∼ 5 μg of DNA per sample. For validation of the method, 34 human blood cell DNA samples were assayed and the results revealed a significant difference (P < 0.01) between levels (fmol/μg DNA) of 0.82 ± 0.83 (standard deviation [SD]) (range: 0.15-3.11) for εdA, 3.28 ± 3.15 (SD) (range: 0.05-9.6) for εdC in benzene-exposed workers; and 0.04 ± 0.08 (SD) (range: 0.0-0.27) for εdA and 0.77 ± 1.02 (SD) (range: 0.10-4.11) for εdC in non-benzene-exposed workers. Our method shows a high sensitivity and specificity when applied to small amounts of human white blood cell DNA samples; background levels of εdA and εdC could be reproducibly detected. The ultrasensitive and simple detection method is thus suitable for applications in human biomonitoring and molecular epidemiology studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Critical limb ischemia (CLI) is the most severe form of peripheral arterial disease and a major unmet public health care need. This phase I clinical study was performed to assess the safety and preliminary efficacy of naked plasmid DNA (pUDK-HGF) expressing human hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) in patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI). DESIGN Twenty-one patients with CLI were enrolled and randomly divided into four dose groups (4-16 mg) to receive local injection of pUDK-HGF into ischemic calf and/or thigh muscles twice on days 1 and 15. Safety, including adverse events and physiological parameters, and preliminary efficacy, including pain severity score (VAS), ulcer size, transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcPO2), and ankle brachial index (ABI), were evaluated throughout a 3 month follow up period. RESULTS All doses of pUDK-HGF were well tolerated by the patients. None of the adverse effects was considered to be related to pUDK-HGF injection. Two significant clinical results were observed after pUDK-HGF administration. The mean VAS value of all patients decreased from 4.52 at baseline to 0.30 (p < .01), and pain had disappeared in 14 out of 17 evaluable patients by day 91. Two of four ulcers had completely healed, with the other two patients having more than 25% ulcer size reduction in the long axis diameter. Of five patients with gangrene, one gangrenous wound had healed completely and two patients showed marked size reduction by day 91. The mean hemodynamic parameters (ABI, TcPO2) were also improved. CONCLUSION Intramuscular injection of pUDK-HGF is safe, and may provide symptomatic relief for CLI patients. A larger, randomized, double blinded phase II trial will provide more information on safety and efficacy.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to isolate and culture bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from patients with high altitude polycythemia (HAPC) in order to provide a foundation for further exploration of their biological characteristics. MSCs were isolated and cultured from 10 HAPC patients and 10 healthy controls by using a density gradient centrifugation and an adherent screening method. The morphous of MSCs were observed under an inverted microscope, and its surface antigens were determined using flow cytometry. The growth of the MSCs was also detected to evaluate its proliferation. Bone marrow mononuclear cells were isolated from the bone marrow using a density gradient centrifugation, and they were cultured in vitro. The bone marrow MSCs were successfully isolated and cultured, which presented as fusiform and adherent cells. The MSCs in both groups expressed CD90,CD44,CD29,CD105, CD106, CD146, CD166,Stro—1 and CD13, but they did not express CD45, CD4,CD8,CD19,CD20,CD80,CD14,CD3,CD34 or HLA—DR (P>0.05). The bone marrow MSCs from HAPC patients had a higher proliferation than the bone marrow MSCs from the healthy controls (P<0.01). The bone marrow MSCs from HAPC patients can be effectively cultured in vitro.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), which are composed of intracellular filamentous aggregates of hyperphosphorylated tau protein, are one of the pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Because tau phosphorylation is regulated by phosphatases, abnormal metabolism of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) has been proposed to be a contributing factor to the disease process. RESULTS To determine the function of folic acid on tau phosphorylation, an in vitro model of human neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y) were exposed to folic acid (0-40 μmol/L) for 96 h, in the presence or absence of the phosphoesterase inhibitor okadaic acid (OA) (10 nmol/L) for 9 h. The data of western blot showed tau phosphorylation at the Ser396 site in OA-incubated SH-SY5Y cells was inhibited by folic acid in a concentration-dependent manner, with the folic acid concentration of 40 μmol/L providing maximal inhibition. Folic acid can downregulate tau protein phosphorylation by inhibiting the demethylation reactions of PP2A. High folic acid concentrations (20 and 40 μmol/L) increased SAM:SAH ratios and cell viability. CONCLUSION Therefore, we can speculate that folate deficiency may be a cause of PP2A deregulation, which can in turn lead to expression of the abnormal hyperphosphorylated form of tau.

Abstract
Oxytocin (OT) plays an important role in pain modulation and antinociception in the central nervous system. However, little is known about its peripheral effects. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of OT on the electrical properties of neurons in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and the underlying mechanisms. DRG neurons from adult rats were acutely dissociated and cultured. Intracellular Ca(2+) was determined by fluorescent microscopy using an indicator dye. The electrical properties of DRG neurons were tested by patch-clamp recording. The oxytocin receptor (OTR) and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) on DRG neurons were assessed with immunofluorescence assays. OTR co-localized with nNOS in most of Isolectin B4 (IB4)-binding cultured DRG neurons in rats. OT decreased the excitability, increased the outward current, and evoked the membrane hyperpolarization in cultured DRG neurons. Sodium nitroprusside (SNP), the donor of nitric oxide (NO), exerted similar effects as OT on the membrane potential of cultured DRG neurons. OT increased the production of NO in DRGs and cultured DRG neurons. Pre-treatment of the OTR antagonist atosiban or the selective nNOS inhibitor N-Propyl-l-arginine (NPLA) significantly attenuated the hyperpolarization effect evoked by OT. OT produced a concentration-dependent increase in intracellular Ca(2+) in DRG neurons that responds to capsaicin, which can be attenuated by atosiban, but not by NPLA. OT-evoked membrane hyperpolarization and increase of outward current were distinctly attenuated by glibenclamide, a blocker of ATP-sensitive K(+) (KATP) channel. OT might be an endogenous antinociceptive agent and the peripheral antinociceptive effects of OT are mediated by activation of the Ca(2+)/nNOS/NO/KATP pathway in DRG neurons.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the molecular mechanisms of osteoarthritis (OA) by microarray analysis. Three gene expression datasets GSE1919, 19664 and 55235 were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus, and data of OA samples and healthy controls were used. After data preprocessing, differential expression analysis between the OA group and controls was performed using LIMMA (Linear Models for Microarray Data) package and genes with |log2FC (fold change)|>1 and P<0.05 were screened as DEGs (differentially expressed genes). The screened DEGs were then subject to functional annotation and pathway enrichment analysis using DAVID (Database for Annotation Visualization and Integrated Discovery). Next, gene-set enrichment analysis was performed using Enrichment map Cytoscape plug-in, followed by detecting sub-networks using clusterONE. Finally, risk subpathways were screened using iSubpathwayMiner package. A total of 141 DEGs were screened, including 52 up-regulated ones and 89 down-regulated ones. These DEGs were enriched in 48 GO terms that were mainly related to locomotory behavior, taxis, adhesion, and 11 pathways that were related to cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, ECM-receptor interaction, focal adhesion, as well as several signaling pathways. The enrichment map enriched gene-sets mainly related to cell death and apoptosis, and extracellular components. The risk pathways up-regulated DEGs were exclusively related to arachidonic acid metabolism and glycosphingolipid biosynthesis, and the top two risk pathways were tyrosine metabolism for the down-regulated ones. From this study we conclude that genes involved in cell death and apoptosis, as well as cell-extracellular matrix interaction, may be essential for OA pathogenesis by altering multiple signaling pathways.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxytocin plays an analgesic role in modulation of nociception and pain. Most work to date has focused on the central mechanisms of oxytocin analgesia, but little is known about whether peripheral mechanisms are also involved. METHODS The mesenteric afferent discharge was recorded in vitro. The expressions of oxytocin receptor (OTR) and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in longitudinal muscle myenteric plexus (LMMP) was identified by immunofluorescence. KEY RESULTS Oxytocin per se had no effect on the jejunal mesenteric afferent discharge, however, it markedly attenuated the bradykinin- or distention-evoked increase of mesenteric afferent discharge, which was mimiced by the nitric oxide (NO) donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP). Pretreatment of either NOS inhibitor L-NAME or NPLA largely reduced the inhibitory effect of oxytocin on bradykinin-evoked mesenteric afferent discharge. Such effect, to a large extent, was also alleviated by N-and P-type voltage-dependent calcium channel antagonists or KATP blocker glibenclamide. In addition, immunofluorescence studies show strong colocalization of OTR with nNOS in LMMP of the rat jejunum. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES Oxytocin down-regulates the mesenteric afferent sensitivity through nNOS-NO-KATP pathway. Our findings may reveal a new peripheral mechanism for oxytocin analgesia.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The evpP gene in fish pathogen Edwardsiella tarda, coding the T6SS secretory protein EvpP and carrying an evpA-evpO independent promoter region, was crucial for host cell invasion. The transcription of evpP was positively regulated by either the two-component system EsrA-EsrB or iron concentration, and its overexpression was known to enhance the invasion ability in our previous study. This work demonstrated that the H-NS protein, a pleiotropic regulator of gene expression, was a new transcriptional modulator of evpP gene. The results showed that in vivo the transcriptional level of evpP was downregulated by H-NS and in vitro this global regulator interacted directly with evpP promoter region. Moreover, DNase I footprinting experiments mapping the interaction regions of H-NS and evpP revealed that this global regulator bound to evpP promoter and neighbouring areas at multiple sites. We provided a new insight into evpP regulation network and demonstrated the repression of H-NS to the transcription of evpP gene. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Recently, the devastating fish disease edwardsiellosis caused by Edwardsiella tarda has been widely concerned. The xenogeneic silencing of the classic regulator H-NS to the T6SS secretory protein EvpP, which played an important role in the virulence of Edw. tarda, was firstly reported in this study. It raised a better understanding of the virulence regulation of EvpP and provided more information about the complex infection mechanism of this pathogen. Our findings would contribute to the development of live attenuated vaccines against edwardsiellosis thus reducing the economic losses caused by this bacterium.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the existence and characteristics of Salmonella enterica in dried milk-related infant foods. Twenty-four (3.4%) of 705 samples, including 5 (2.0%) of 246 powdered infant formula, 18 (4.0%) of 445 infant rice cereal, and 1 (7.1%) of 14 other infant foods, were positive for Salmonella. Fifteen serotypes were identified in 40 Salmonella isolates; Salmonella Duesseldorf (15.0%) and Salmonella Indiana (15.0%) were more frequently detected than other serotypes. Resistance to chloramphenicol (82.5%) was most common, followed by tetracycline (57.5%), ceftiofur (52.5%), kanamycin (52.5%), streptomycin (50.0%), gentamycin (45.0%), nalidixic acid (35.0%), ceftriaxone (32.5%), ciprofloxacin (25.0%), amikacin (20.0%), and cefoxitin (15.0%). Twenty-eight (70.0%) isolates were resistant to ≥ 8 antimicrobials, with 5 (12.5%) being resistant to 14 antimicrobials. Amino acid substitutions in gyrase A (GyrA) were most frequently detected as Ser83Arg/Asp87Glu and in p53-associated Parkin-like cytoplasmic protein (ParC), they were all Ser80Arg; the quinolone resistance gene qnrS (47.5%) was commonly detected as well as aminoglycoside acetyltransferase [aac(6')-Ib; 25.0%], qnrA (17.5%), and qnrB (15.0%) genes. Thirty distinct pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns were identified among 40 isolates; no identical pulsed-field gel electrophoresis pattern was detected among Salmonella isolates with the same serovar that was recovered in 2010 and 2012. Our results suggest that dried milk-related infant foods could be contaminated with Salmonella and highlight that the dangers to infant health should not be neglected.

Abstract
Chalcogenide glass fibers are very suitable to carry out mid-infrared spectroscopy by Fiber Evanescent Wave Spectroscopy (FEWS). Nowadays, selenide glasses are used for FEWS, but the reachable domain is limited in the infrared to typically 12 µm. Te-rich glasses, due to their heavy atomic weight, are better for far-infrared sensing but they crystallize easily and until now that was difficult to prepare operational optical fibers from such glasses. In this work, Te-Ge-AgI highly purified glasses have been prepared and successfully drawn into optical fiber. The minimum of attenuation is 3 dB/m around 10 μm, which is up to now the lowest value ever measured for Te-based fiber. Overall, such fibers open the sensing window up to 16 μm against 12 µm so far. Then, for the first time, tapered telluride fibers with different diameters at the sensing zone were obtained during the fiber drawing process. Chloroform and butter were used to test the fiber infrared sensing ability, and the sensitivity has been greatly enhanced as the sensing zone fiber diameter decreases. Finally, the new protocol of telluride glass preparation allows shaping them into efficient functional fibers, opening further in the mid-infrared which is essential for chemical spectroscopy.

Abstract
We evaluated the associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and haplotypes of the genes encoding a disintegrin and metalloproteinase 33 (ADAM33), cluster of differentiation 14 (CD14), and Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and the susceptibility of developing specific adult phenotypes of bronchial asthma in a Chinese Uygur population. Five SNPs of ADAM33 (T1, T2, and V4), 3 SNPs of CD14 (-1359G/T, -1145G/A, and -159T/C), and 2 SNPs of TLR4 (-896A/G and -1196C/T) were genotyped in a Chinese Uygur sample of 126 adult asthmatic patients and 126 control subjects. Gene polymorphisms were detected by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. The genotyping results were confirmed in a random subgroup of our samples using direct DNA sequencing. The allele frequencies of ADAM33 T1 (TC), T2 (AG), and V4 (GG) were significantly higher in patients than in controls (P<0.05). The genotypes T1 (TC+CC), T2 (AG+AA), and V4 (CG+GG) significantly increased the risk of asthma. After adjusting for confounding factors, these associations were stronger and remained significant. The T1 (TC) and V4 (GG) genotypes in the ADAM33 gene were associated with significantly decreased FEV1 levels in patients with asthma. The haplotype frequencies of Hap3 (CAC) and Hap4 (CAG) were significantly higher in patients than in controls (P<0.05). Our results suggest that polymorphisms T1, T2, and V4 in ADAM33 may contribute to the susceptibility to asthma. Specific haplotypes of ADAM33 may contribute to a higher susceptibility to asthma in the Chinese Uygur population.
