Characterization of the stuffed framework structures BaAlGaO4 and BaFeGaO4

The crystal structures of the compounds BaMGaO4 (M = Al, Fe) have been investigated using conventional single-crystal X-ray diffraction data for M = Fe and with synchrotron radiation data for M = Al. BaAlGaO4 (space group P6322, a = 5.2788(4) Å and c = 8.7835(7) Å, V = 211.97(4) Å3, Z = 2, D calc. = 4.67 g cm–3, wR2 = 0.089 for 242 independent reflections with I > 2σ(I)) is isostructural with BaAl2O4-I. Main building units are layers of six-membered rings of (Al,Ga)O4-tetrahedra perpendicular to [001]. The sequence of directedness of the tetrahedral apices in all single six membered rings (S6R) is UDUDUD (U: up, D: down). Stacking of layers parallel to c results in a three-dimensional framework containing tunnels, where the Ba atoms are located. They are coordinated by nine oxygen ligands in form of distorted tricapped trigonal antiprisms. BaFeGaO4 also belongs to the hexagonal crystal system (space group P63, a = 10.8377(6) Å and c = 8.6865(6) Å, V = 883.59(9) Å3, Z = 8, D calc. = 4.92 g cm–3, wR2 = 0.099 for 1042 independent observed reflections). The crystal showed twinning by merohedry which was accounted for in the refinement calculations. Within a single tetrahedral layer of the framework structure two different types of ditrigonal-shaped rings are distinguishable: one fourth of the rings have an UDUDUD topology, whereas the sequence of the remaining rings is UUUDDD. The Fe3+- and Ga3+-cations show an ordered distribution among the four symmetrically independent T-sites: two positions contain either Fe or Ga, whereas on the remaining two sites there is a definite preference for one of the two cation species. The Ba atoms in the cavities of the framework are coordinated by eight to nine oxygen neighbors. The observed twinning in BaFeGaO4 can be attributed to the existence of pseudo twofold axis within the tetrahedral layers, running parallel [100] and the corresponding symmetrically equivalent directions.

Antibacterial applications of silver nanoparticles synthesized by aqueous extract of Azadirachta indica (Neem) leaves

Silver nanoparticles are known to have bactericidal effects. A new generation of dressings incorporating antimicrobial agents like silver nanoparticles is being formulated to reduce or prevent infections. The particles can be incorporated in materials and cloth rendering them sterile. Recently, it was found that aqueous silver ions can be reduced by aqueous extract of plant parts to generate extremely stable silver nanoparticles in water. Apart from being environmentally friendly process, use of Neem leaves extract might add synergistic antibacterial effect of Neem leaves to the biosynthesized nanoparticles. With this hypothesis the biosynthetic production of silver nanoparticles by aqueous extract of Neem leaves and its bactericidal effect in cotton cloth against E. Coli were studied in this work. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized by short-term (1 day) and long-term (21 days) interaction of Neem extract (20% w/v) and 0.01 M AgNO3 solution in 1:4 mixing ratio. The synthesized particles were characterized by UV visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and incorporated into cotton disks by (i) centrifuging the disks with liquid broth containing nanoparticles, (ii) in-situ coating process during synthesis, and (iii) coating with dried and purified nanoparticles. The antibacterial property of the nanoparticles coated cotton disks was studied by disk diffusion method. The effect of consecutive washing of the coated disks with distilled water on antibacterial property was also investigated. This work demonstrates the possible use of biologically synthesized silver nanoparticles by its incorporation in cloths leading them to sterilization.

Abstract B42: Polymorphism of CYP3A5 gene in Indian chronic myeloid leukemia patients

Objective

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a clonal hematopoetic stem cell disorder characterized by the Philadelphia chromosome. Individuals vary in their ability to metabolize carcinogens and hence to detoxify chemicals, leading to different risk in getting cancer. The human CYP3A5 is a major P450 enzyme in the liver and represents 50% of the total hepatic CYP3A content in people expressing CYP3A5. Therefore, it is suggested that the CYP3A5 is an important genetic contributor to inter-individual differences in CYP3A-dependent drug metabolism. Owing to the importance of CYP3A5 genetic polymorphism as risk factor in various cancers, the study was aimed to detect the prevalence of genetic polymorphism of CYP3A5*3 gene in North Indian CML patients and racially matched controls. Further, it will help to determine the association of these allelic variants if any, as risk factor to develop CML.

Materials and Methods

Human blood was collected from 50 CML patients and 65 healthy individuals which were age and sex matched. DNA isolation was carried out by standard proteinase K and phenol chloroform method. The prevalence of CYP3A5*3 genotype was examined by PCR-RFLP method. PCR products were separated using 2% agarose gel.

In the analysis of the CYP3A5*3 polymorphism, a fragment of 155 base pairs (bp) was amplified by PCR, which was followed by restriction digestion by Dde I. The 155 bp product from the CYP3A5*1 allele was digested into 121 and 34 bp fragments, whereas the PCR product of the CYP3A5*3 was cleaved to 97, 34, and 24 bp fragments.

Results

The frequencies reported in controls were, 7/65 (10.76%) for homozygous CYP3A5*1/*1 , 28/65 (43.07%) for heterozygous CYP3A5*1/*3 and was 30/65 (46.15%) for homozygous CYP3A5*3/*3 respectively. The frequencies reported in cases were 5/50 (10%), 21/50 (42%) and 24/50 (48%) respectively. There was no significant difference between the frequencies of wild (*1/*1), heterozygous (*1/*3) & mutant allele (*3/*3), (control vs cases).

However, when these alleles where compared individually within a class, a higher frequency of

heterozygous & mutant allele, was reported as compared to the wild type, both in the cases and in controls. The combined frequency of heterozygous & mutant allele vs wild in controls was 89.22% and 10.76% respectively, and that in cases being 90% and 10% respectively.

Discussion

It is concluded that there is no association of this polymorphism with the risk of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. However, due to the variable frequencies of xenobiotic metabolizing polymorphic alleles in different populations, further studies with different populations are required in order to investigate the association of polymorphic variability and its possible role in susceptibility to CML.

Observation of the suppression of the flux of cosmic rays above 4 x 10 (19) eV

The energy spectrum of cosmic rays above 2.5 x 10;{18} eV, derived from 20,000 events recorded at the Pierre Auger Observatory, is described. The spectral index gamma of the particle flux, J proportional, variantE;{-gamma}, at energies between 4 x 10;{18} eV and 4 x 10;{19} eV is 2.69+/-0.02(stat)+/-0.06(syst), steepening to 4.2+/-0.4(stat)+/-0.06(syst) at higher energies. The hypothesis of a single power law is rejected with a significance greater than 6 standard deviations. The data are consistent with the prediction by Greisen and by Zatsepin and Kuz'min.

KeV ion-induced effective surface modifications on InP

In the present study, we have analyzed the changes in surface morphology leading to formation of periodic structures known as ripples which arise due to an interplay between sputtering and surface diffusion. The 1.5 keV Ar atoms with a flux of 14.8 mA/cm2 are used in the present study. The InP(100) samples were bombarded at an incidence angle of 45 degrees to the normal at a base pressure of 1 x 10(-6) Torr at room temperature with fluences varying from 4 x 10(16) to 3.2 x 10(17) atoms/cm2. The rippled InP(100) surface was characterized with AFM. An increase in the ripple wavelengths, from 60 nm to 150 nm with the fluence has been observed. The width of the ripples varies from 38 nm to 128 nm and ripple amplitude varies from 0.8 nm to 16 nm with increasing fluence. One can control the dimension of the ripples in nano scale by controlling the fluence. Scaling studies have been performed to understand the mechanism responsible for such kind of surface evolution. The roughness parameter, alpha was found to be between 0.65 to 0.75 and the growth parameter, beta, as 1.14 +/- 0.12. The XPS characterization has also been employed to study the changes in the behavior of the InP with varying fluence.

Upper limit on the diffuse flux of ultrahigh energy tau neutrinos from the Pierre Auger Observatory

The surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory is sensitive to Earth-skimming tau neutrinos that interact in Earth's crust. Tau leptons from nu(tau) charged-current interactions can emerge and decay in the atmosphere to produce a nearly horizontal shower with a significant electromagnetic component. The data collected between 1 January 2004 and 31 August 2007 are used to place an upper limit on the diffuse flux of nu(tau) at EeV energies. Assuming an E(nu)(-2) differential energy spectrum the limit set at 90% C.L. is E(nu)(2)dN(nu)(tau)/dE(nu)<1.3 x 10(-7) GeV cm(-2) s(-1) sr(-1) in the energy range 2 x 10(17) eV< E(nu)< 2 x 10(19) eV.

Synthesis of nanoscale copper nitride thin film and modification of the surface under high electronic excitation

Nanoscale (approximately 90 nm) Copper nitride (Cu3N) films are deposited on borosilicate glass and Si substrates by RF sputtering technique in the reactive environment of nitrogen gas. These films are irradiated with 200 MeV Au15+ ions from Pelletron accelerator in order to modify the surface by high electronic energy deposition of heavy ions. Due to irradiation (i) at incident ion fluence of 1 x 10(12) ions/cm2 enhancement of grains, (ii) at 5 x 10912) ions/cm2 mass transport on the films surface, (iii) at 2 x 10(13) ions/cm2 line-like features on Cu3N/glass and nanometallic structures on Cu3N/Si surface are observed. The surface morphology is examined by atomic force microscope (AFM). All results are explained on the basis of a thermal spike model of ion-solid interaction.

Setup for in situ x-ray diffraction study of swift heavy ion irradiated materials

An in situ x-ray diffraction (XRD) setup is designed and installed in the materials science beam line of the Pelletron accelerator at the Inter-University Accelerator Centre for in situ studies of phase change in swift heavy ion irradiated materials. A high vacuum chamber with suitable windows for incident and diffracted X-rays is integrated with the goniometer and the beamline. Indigenously made liquid nitrogen (LN2) temperature sample cooling unit is installed. The snapshots of growth of particles with fluence of 90 MeV Ni ions were recorded using in situ XRD experiment, illustrating the potential of this in situ facility. A thin film of C60 was used to test the sample cooling unit. It shows that the phase of the C60 film transforms from a cubic lattice (at room temperature) to a fcc lattice at around T=255 K.

Nanocrystalline SnO2 formation using energetic ion beam

Nanocrystalline tin oxide (SnO2) thin films grown by RF magnetron sputtering technique were characterized by UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy and Photoluminescence spectroscopy. From atomic force microscopic (AFM) and Glancing angle X-ray diffraction (GAXRD) measurements, the radius of grains was found to be approximately 6+/-2 nm. The thin films were bombarded with 250 keV Xe2+ ion beam to observe the stability of nanophases against radiation. For ion bombarded films, optical absorption band edge is shifted towards red region. Atomic force microscopy studies show that the radius of the grains was increased to approximately 8 +/- 1 nm and the grains were nearly uniform in size. The size of the grains has been reduced after ion bombardment in the case of films grown on Si. During this process, defects such as vacancies, voids were generated in the films as well as in the substrates. Ion bombardment induces local temperature increase of thin films causing melting of films. Ion beam induced defects enhances the diffusion of atoms leading to uniformity in size of grains. The role of matrix on ion beam induced grain growth is discussed.

Magnetic force microscopy of nano-size magnetic domain ordering in heavy ion irradiated fullerene films

In the present work, magnetic force microscopy is employed to investigate the magnetic ordering in ion irradiated fullerene films. It is observed that magnetic domain size is approximately 100-200 nm and magnetic signal is stronger at the domain boundaries. Magnetic signal arise in irradiated films is confirmed by magnetic measurements using a superconducting quantum interference device which increases with the ion fluence. The induced magnetism is possibly due to structural defects in the amorphous carbon phase formed by ion irradiation.

Use of a hollow needle for drilling holes in small bones to guide intraosseous wires

Holes are frequently drilled across small bones to achieve fixation with intraosseous wires. We describe an effective, simple and cheap alternative to the use of K-wires for this purpose in this article.

The subjective experience of early postoperative pain following retrobulbar anaesthesia for enucleation and primary orbital implant

INTRODUCTION

We performed a prospective audit of the level of postoperative pain experienced by patients following enucleation with insertion of a primary orbital implant after preincisional regional retrobulbar anaesthesia using bupivacaine 0.75% with 1:100,000 adrenaline.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

An 11-point numerical ranking box scale was used to measure the subjective experience of postoperative pain following enucleation with insertion of a primary orbital implant in 40 patients with uveal melanoma. Surgery was performed under general anaesthesia with a supplementary peroperative retrobulbar injection of bupivacaine 0.75%/adrenaline 1:100,000. Pain scores were measured for the first 8 hours following administration of the block.

RESULTS

The sample included 19 female and 21 male patients with a mean age of 66.7 years (31-87). At four hours post block, 80% were still pain free with 17% experiencing only mild to moderate pain (BS-11 = 1-4). Thirty-four (85%), twenty-eight (70%) and twenty-seven (67%) patients remained pain free at 2, 3 and 4 hours, respectively with no additional analgesia. The remainder scored BS-11 of 1-4 in 92% of cases. Twenty percent required supplementary analgesia (paracetemol in 78% cases) by 5 hours and 57% by 8 hours. BS-11 at 8 hours were 0 in 50%, 1-4 in 22% and 5-10 in 10% of patients (17% asleep). No complications using this technique were recorded.

DISCUSSION

Using a preincisional retrobulbar injection of bupivacaine with adrenaline, BS-11 pain scores remained low with no or minimal additional analgesia for up to 4 hours post surgery. In combination with oral analgesia, effective pain control was provided in most cases for up to 8 hours post block.

Association of deletion in the chromosomal 8p21.3-23 region with the development of invasive head & neck squamous cell carcinoma in Indian patients

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES

Deletions in chromosome 8 (chr.8) have been shown to be necessary for the development of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Attempts have been made in this study to detect the minimal deleted region in chr.8 associated with the development of HNSCC in Indian patients and to study the association of clinicopathological features with the progression of the disease.

METHODS

The deletion mapping of chr.8 was done in samples from 10 primary dysplastic lesions and 43 invasive squamous cell carcinomas from the head and neck region of Indian patients to detect allelic alterations (deletion or size alteration) using 12 highly polymorphic microsatellite markers. The association of the highly deleted region was correlated with the tumour node metastasis (TNM) stages, nodal involvement, tobacco habit and human papilloma virus (HPV) infection of the samples.

RESULTS

High frequency (49%) of loss of heterozygosity (LOH) was seen within 13.12 megabase (Mb) region of chromosomal 8p21.3-23 region in the HNSCC samples, whereas the dysplastic samples did not show any allelic alterations in this region. The highest frequency (17%) of microsatellite size alterations (MA) was observed in the chr.8p22 region. The loss of short arm or normal copy of chr.8 and rare bi-allelic alterations were seen in the stage II-IV tumours (939, 5184, 2772, 1319 and 598) irrespective of their primary sites. The highly deleted region did not show any significant association with any of the clinical parameters. However, HPV infection was significantly associated (P < 0.05) with the differentiation grades and overall allelic alterations (LOH/MA) of the samples.

INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION

Our data indicate that the 13.12 Mb deleted region in the chromosomal 8p21.3-23 region could harbour candidate tumour suppressor gene(s) (TSGs) associated with the progression anti invasion of HNSCC tumours in Indian patients.

Strabismus surgery: adjustable sutures-good for all?

AIMS

The role of adjustable sutures in strabismus surgery has mainly been limited to conditions like dysthyroid restrictive myopathy, blow-out fractures of orbit, aberrant regeneration of nerves, and certain other long-standing and complicated squints. In this clinical study, an attempt has been made to analyse the efficacy of adjustable sutures in squint surgery as a routine procedure. We also studied patients' acceptability and satisfaction following this procedure and analysed various factors that may influence the surgical outcome (age, sex, previous surgeries, injections of botulinum toxin, etc).

METHODS

A total number of 443 patients, aged between 13 and 78 years, who underwent strabismus surgery in our department, from January 1996 to January 2000, were included in this study. Of these patients, 141 had surgery with adjustable sutures and 302 patients without adjustable sutures. Surgical results were followed up for a period ranging from 12 to 50 months. The main outcome measure was a need for a reoperation in the two groups. In addition, we also studied patients' satisfaction with regard to final cosmetic appearance or relief of diplopia; percentage change in angle of deviation in two groups, and influence of various factors such as age, sex, previous surgeries, and injection of botulinum toxin on the final surgical outcome. The results were statistically analysed using Levene's test for equality of variances, t-test for equality of means, and statistical significance of the results was analysed by calculating P-values.

RESULTS

In total, 8.51% of the patients in the adjustable group and 27.15% in the nonadjustable group needed a reoperation. Surgical results were found to be significantly better in patients who had adjustable sutures in comparison to those who did not have adjustable sutures (P<0.005). Patients' satisfaction and percentage change in angle of deviation was also much higher in adjustable sutures group. Age, sex, number of previous surgeries, previous injections of botulinum toxin, and type and amount of deviation had no statistically significant influence on the surgical outcome.

CONCLUSIONS

Strabismus surgery with adjustable sutures has a statistically significant better, final result than surgery without adjustable sutures. Patients' satisfaction and percentage change in angle of deviation is also much higher in the adjustable sutures group. As age, sex, number of previous surgeries, previous injections of botulinum toxin, and type and amount of deviation do not influence the final outcome, this type of surgery can be performed in virtually all types of patients.

Allelic imbalance at chromosome 11 in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in an Indian patient population

BACKGROUND

Genetic instability of chromosome 11 is a frequent event in many solid tumours, including head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).

AIMS

To perform allelic imbalance analysis of cytogenetically mapped altered regions of human chromosome 11 in patients with HNSCC from eastern India.

METHODS

Genomic alterations were investigated using highly polymorphic microsatellite markers in both HNSCC and leukoplakia tissues.

RESULTS

Microsatellite markers D11S1758 from 11p13-15 and D11S925 from 11q23.3-24 had the highest frequency (38% and 32%, respectively) of loss of heterozygosity among all the markers analysed. Allelic loss at the marker D11S925 was seen in both leukoplakia and in all stages of HNSCC tumour tissues suggesting that it is an early event in HNSCC tumorigenesis. Microsatellite size alteration was also found to be high (> 20%) in several markers. In leukoplakia samples microsatellite instability was seen at a higher frequency than loss of the allele, indicating such alterations might initiate the process of tumorigenesis in HNSCC.

CONCLUSIONS

The high rate of chromosomal alterations at 11q21-24 in HNSCC suggests the presence of a putative tumour suppressor gene in this region.

Alterations of the P16 gene in uterine cervical carcinoma from Indian patients

In our analysis, alterations in the P16 tumor suppressor gene were seen in 33% (15/46) of sampled uterine cervical lesions. Among the alterations, mutations in P16 were detected in 15% (7/46) of the samples. One mutation occurred at intron 1/exon 2 splice junction. All the other mutations were in exon 2 with three of them as silent mutations. The promoter hypermethylation and homozygous deletion of P16 gene were detected in 6.5% (3/46) and 8.7% (4/46) of the samples respectively. Loss of heterozygosity and microsatellite size alterations at the P16 locus were seen in 17% (8/46) of the samples. HPV16/18 infection was detected in 76% (35/46) of the samples. But no association was found between P16 alterations and HPV infection. Thus, it seems that P16 inactivation may be associated with the development of some uterine cervical carcinoma.

Sequential deletions in both arms of chromosome 9 are associated with the development of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in Indian patients

In the deletion mapping of chromosome (chr) 9 in head and neck lesions of the Indian patient population by microsatellite markers, we have identified four discrete areas (D1-D4) with high loss of heterozygosities (LOHs) viz. 9p24-p23 (D1), 9p22-p21 (D2), 9q11-q13 (D3) and 9q22.3 (D4) regions. The deletions in D2 and D4 regions were suggested to be essential for the development of dysplastic lesions of head and neck, whereas the deletions in D1 and D3 regions were responsible for progression of the dysplastic lesions to early invasive head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). The microsatellite size alterations (MAs) were observed in the chromosomal 9pter-p23, 9p22-p21(D2), 9q13 and 9q21.1-q21.2 regions with gradual increase during progression of the tumor. Additional chromosomal alterations like loss of normal copy of chr.9 and biallelic alterations were also seen in our samples. There is a correlation between HPV infection with TNM stages, histopathological grades and LOHs at D1 and D4 regions. Whereas tobacco habit is associated with the occurrence of LOHs at D1 and LOHs / MAs at D2 region.

Measurements of the Decay KL-->e+ e- mu+ mu-

The KTeV experiment at Fermilab has isolated a total of 132 events from the rare decay K(L)-->e+ e- mu+ mu-, with an estimated background of 0.8 events. The branching ratio of this mode is determined to be [2.69+/-0.24(stat)+/-0.12(syst)]x10(-9), with a radiative cutoff of M(2)(ee mu mu)/M(2)(K)>0.95. The first measurement using this mode of the parameter alpha from the D'Ambrosio-Isidori-Portolès (DIP) model of the K(L)gamma*gamma* vertex yields a result of -1.59+/-0.37, consistent with values obtained from other decay modes. Because of the limited statistics, no sensitivity is found to the DIP parameter beta. We use this decay mode to set limits on CP and lepton violation.

Search for the KL-->pi 0 pi 0 e+e- decay in the KTeV experiment

The recent discovery of a large CP violating asymmetry in KL-->pi+pi-e+e- mode has prompted us to seach for the associated KL-->pi 0 pi 0 e+e- decay mode in the KTeV-E799 experiment at Fermilab. In 2.7 x 10(11) K(L) decays, one candidate event has been observed with an expected background of 0.3 event, resulting in an upper limit for the KL-->pi 0 pi 0 e+e- branching ratio of 6.6 x 10(-9) at the 90% C.L.

Radiative decay width measurements of neutral kaon excitations using the primakoff effect

We use K(L)'s in the 100-200 GeV energy range to produce 147 candidate events of the axial vector pair K1(1270)-K1(1400) in the nuclear Coulomb field of a Pb target and determine the radiative widths Gamma(K1(1400)-->K0+gamma)=280.8+/-23.2(stat)+/-40.4(syst) keV and Gamma(K1(1270)-->K0+gamma)=73.2+/-6.1(stat)+/-28.3(syst) keV. These first measurements appear to be lower than the quark-model predictions. We also place upper limits on the radiative widths for K(*)(1410) and K(*)(2)(1430) and find that the latter is vanishingly small in accord with SU(3) invariance in the naive quark model.

Measurement of the K(L) charge asymmetry

We present a measurement of the charge asymmetry delta(L) in the mode K(L)-->pi(+/-)e(-/+)nu based on 298 x 10(6) analyzed decays. We measure a value of delta(L) = [3322+/-58(stat)+/-47(syst)]x10(-6), in good agreement with previous measurements and 2.4 times more precise than the current best published result. The result is used to place more stringent limits on CPT and DeltaS = DeltaQ violation in the neutral kaon system.

Local anaesthetic endonasal endoscopic laser dacryocystorhinostomy: analysis of patients' acceptability and various factors affecting the success of this procedure

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Endonasal endoscopic laser dacryocystorhinostomy is now a well established, effective approach to relieve nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Whereas attempts have been made to comment on the efficacy of the procedure, no study has been conducted to evaluate the acceptability of this procedure by those at the receiving end, ie, the patients. An attempt has been made in the present study to critically evaluate the procedure from the point of view of patients' acceptability and also to evaluate certain factors which may influence the success rate of this procedure.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Forty-six eyes from 40 patients underwent endonasal endoscopic laser dacryocystorhinostomy, performed by the same surgeon, over a period of 15 months. Various aspects of the procedure were evaluated by patients by filling out a simple questionnaire (Figure 1). In addition to recording patients' views, success of the procedure was confirmed by performing a postoperative sac washout in the clinic. Patients were also subdivided according to their age, duration of symptoms and history of previous surgical intervention. The data were statistically analysed using chi-square tests with the Yates correction.

RESULTS

The percentage of patients who declared themselves completely cured was 65.22%. A partial resolution was felt by 23.91% of patients and no improvement was reported by 10.87% of patients. Forty-two out of the 46 eyes (91.3%) achieved anatomical success by the procedure, as shown by a postoperative sac washout performed in the clinic. Some of them, however, did not have complete resolution of their symptoms perhaps due to an additional factor of lacrimal pump dysfunction in these patients. During the procedure 60.86% of eyes felt no discomfort at all whereas 39.14% of eyes felt some discomfort at some point of time during the procedure (Table 1). When directly asked 86.12% of patients recommended the procedure (implying that the procedure had some good effect on their quality of life), 8.33% of patients did not recommend it and 5.55% of patients made no comments. Various factors affecting the success of this procedure were analysed (Table 2) and it was found that eyes which had no previous surgical intervention showed a complete cure rate which was significantly higher than that seen in eyes which had some sort of previous intervention (P = 0.0003); eyes with a short (<6 mths) duration of symptoms showed significantly higher success rates (P = 0.0098) in comparison to that shown by eyes with longer (>6 mths) duration of symptoms; and younger patients (<50 yrs) had a complete resolution rate much higher than patients over 50 yrs of age (P = 0.0309).

CONCLUSION

The present study clearly shows that endonasal endoscopic laser DCR is an effective procedure, well tolerated and recommended by the patients. Discomfort during the procedure is not a major problem. Younger patients, with no previous surgical intervention and with short duration of symptoms are likely to be benefited the most. Though success rates are higher with external DCR, endonasal endoscopic laser DCR offers certain advantages over the external approach while keeping the option of external DCR open, if needed at a later date.

First measurement of form factors of the decay Xi(0) --> Sigma(+)e(-)nu macro(e)

We present the first measurement of the form factor ratios g(1)/f(1) (direct axial vector to vector), g(2)/f(1) (second class current), and f(2)/f(1) (weak magnetism) for the decay Xi(0)-->Sigma(+)e(-)nu macro(e) using the KTeV (E799) beam line and detector at Fermilab. From the Sigma(+) polarization measured with the decay Sigma(+)-->p pi(0) and the e(-)-nu; correlation, we measure g(1)/f(1) to be 1.32+/-(0.21)(0.17)(stat)+/-0.05(syst), assuming the SU(3)(f) (flavor) values for g(2)/f(1) and f(2)/f(1). Our results are all consistent with exact SU(3)(f) symmetry.

Branching ratio measurement of the decay K(L) --> e(+)e(-)mu(+)mu(-)

We have collected a 43 event sample of the decay K(L)-->e(+)e(-)mu(+)mu(-) with negligible backgrounds and measured its branching ratio to be (2.62+/-0.40+/-0.17)x10(-9). We see no evidence for CP violation in this decay. In addition, we set the 90% confidence upper limit on the combined branching ratios for the lepton flavor violating decays K(L)-->e(+/-)e(+/-)mu(-/+)mu(-/+) at B(K(L)-->e(+/-)e(+/-)mu(-/+)mu(-/+))< or =1.23x10(-10), assuming a uniform phase space distribution.

Intraocular pressure -- all that is raised is not glaucoma

Increased intraocular pressure invariably sets our mind in the direction of either establishing or ruling out the diagnosis of glaucoma and in the process, sometimes, certain hidden factors may escape our attention, leading to some delay in delivering the specific treatment to the patient. We present a case whose underlying pathology remained obscured for more than 10 years before we examined this patient and discovered the hidden secret.

Measurement of the branching ratio and form factor of K(L)-->mu(+)mu(-)gamma

We report on the analysis of the rare decay K(L)-->mu(+)mu(-)gamma the 1997 data from the KTeV experiment at Fermilab. A total of 9327 candidate events are observed with 2.4% background, representing a factor of 40 increase in statistics over the current world sample. We find that B(K(L)-->mu(+)mu(-)gamma) = (3.62 +/- 0.04(stat) +/- 0.08(syst)) x 10(-7). The form factor parameter alpha(K*) is measured to be alpha(K*) = -0.160(+0.026)(-0.028). In addition, we make the first measurement of the parameter alpha from the D'Ambrosio-Isidori-Portolés form factor, finding alpha = -1.54 +/- 0.10. In that model, this alpha measurement limits the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa parameter rho>-0.2.

Measurements of the rare decay K(L) --> e(+)e(-)e(+)e(-)

We observe 441 K(L)-->e(+)e(-)e(+)e(-) candidate events with a background of 4.2 events and measure B(K(L)-->e(+)e(-)e(+)e(-)) = [3.72+/-0.18(stat)+/-0.23(syst)]x10(-8) in the KTeV/E799II experiment at Fermilab. Using the distribution of the angle between the planes of the e(+)e(-) pairs, we measure the CP parameters beta(CP) = -0.23+/-0.09(stat)+/-0.02(syst) and gamma(CP) = -0.09+/-0.09(stat)+/-0.02(syst). We also present the first detailed study of the e(+)e(-) invariant mass spectrum in this decay mode.

Measurement of the branching ratio and asymmetry of the decay Xi degrees -->Sigma degrees gamma

We have studied the rare weak radiative hyperon decay Xi degrees -->Sigma degrees gamma in the KTeV experiment at Fermilab. We have identified 4045 signal events over a background of 804 events. The dominant Xi degrees -->Lambdapi degrees decay, which was used for normalization, is the only important background source. An analysis of the acceptance of both modes yields a branching ratio of B(Xi degrees -->Sigma degrees gamma)/B(Xi degrees -->Lambdapi degrees ) = (3.34+/-0.05+/-0.09)x10(-3). By analyzing the final state decay distributions, we have also determined that the Sigma degrees emission asymmetry parameter for this decay is alpha(XiSigma) = -0.63+/-0.09.

K5.76Ga5.76Si10.24O32.3.4H2O, a gallosilicate with the zeolite gismondine topology

The title compound, K-GaSi-GIS, potassium gallium silicon oxide hydrate, was synthesized hydrothermally and its crystal structure was determined from data collected on a single crystal of dimensions 10 x 10 x 8 microm at a synchrotron X-ray source. The compound, which has the aluminosilicate (AlSi) zeolite gismondine (GIS) topology, Ca(4)[Al(8)Si(8)O(32)].16H(2)O, crystallizes in the tetragonal space group I4(1)/a. A disordered distribution of the framework Si/Ga sites leads to higher symmetry of the GIS-type network compared with the usual monoclinic symmetry in AlSi-GIS. Framework Ga substitution for Al in AlSi-GIS leads to substantial distortion of the crankshaft chains, reducing the effective pore dimensions and suggesting the possibility of pore-dimension control via partial framework-cation substitution.

Permian, Jurassic and Early Cretaceous palynofloral assemblages from subsurface sedimentary rocks in Chuperbhita Coalfield, Rajmahal Basin, India

The results of a palynological analysis of the sedimentary sequence of Borehole RCH-151, Chuperbhita Coalfield, Rajmahal Basin, Bihar are presented here. The borehole penetrated the Rajmahal Formation (comprising two traps sandwiching an intertrappean bed), the thinly represented Dubrajpur Formation and in its lower part, the Coal Measures. The coal-bearing interval is associated with Scheuringipollenites barakarensis, Faunipollenites varius, Densipollenites indicus, Gondisporites raniganjensis and Densipollenites magnicorpus Assemblage Zones. The presence of these biostratigraphic units indicates correlation with the Barakar Formation (Early Permian) and the Barren Measures and Raniganj Formations (both Late Permian). This is the first record, in the Chuperbhita Coalfield, of Late Permian strata, which appear to represent a condensed sequence. Prior to the present study, the Permian succession was thought to have been associated entirely with the Barakar Formation. The overlying Dubrajpur Formation yielded a distinct spore-pollen assemblage (in association with the first report of dinoflagellate, Phallocysta), which is assigned to the newly identified Callialasporites turbatus palynozone of latest Early to early Middle Jurassic age. The diverse spore-pollen flora of the intertrappean bed (Rajmahal Formation) incorporates several age marker taxa, viz. Undulatisporites, Leptolepidites, Klukisporites, Ruffordiaspora, and Coptospora. The assemblages from intertrappean beds are correlated with the Ruffordiaspora australiensis palynozone of Australia. Thus the palynodating indicates Permian, latest Early to early Mid-Jurassic and Early Cretaceous age for the strata studied. This is the first record of definite Jurassic microfossils from the non-marine sequence of Rajmahal Basin, India.
