Abstract
Manipulation of blood and blood components is prohibited in sports by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). This includes the use of blood substitutes to increase oxygen transport, like haemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs), which are compounds derived from haemoglobin. Despite their medical interest, the first generation of HBOCs had serious adverse effects and was abandoned. However, new studies are now exploiting the properties of marine worm haemoglobins, which circulate as giant extracellular complexes with high oxygen-binding capacities. HEMOXYCarrier® (HC), developed by Hemarina, is one of the most advanced and promising HBOCs, and HC may become a tempting doping tool for athletes in the future. Here, HC detection in plasma/serum was evaluated with the method used to detect the first HBOCs, based on electrophoresis and heme peroxidase properties. An HC-derived product was identified in human plasma up to 72 h after in vitro incubation at 37 °C. HC degradation also induced methemalbumin formation. After injecting HC at the effective dose of 200 mg/kg into mice, the HC-derived product was detected only for a few hours and no accumulation of methemalbumin was observed. Due to this limited detection window in vivo, measuring specific worm globin degradation products by mass spectrometry might be an alternative for future anti-doping analyses. Abstract
Stabilizing the labile factor HIF (hypoxia inducible factor) for therapeutic use has led to the development of various molecules by pharmaceutical companies. These HIF stabilizers show promising erythropoiesis stimulating capacities and are of great interest for patients with chronical kidney disease and anemia. Amongst them FG-4592 from FibroGen is now under phase 3 of clinical studies. While this drug is still under investigation, a parallel market already allows to buy this product, which could be tempting for some athletes willing to increase their performances. To avoid such a use for doping purpose, WADA has listed HIF stabilizers and FG-4592 in particular as prohibited substances since 2011 and some anti-doping laboratories have developed a technique of identification of FG-4592 in urine. Here, we described the first case ever identified by an anti-doping laboratory of an athlete using FG-4592. Detection and confirmation in urinary samples was performed by LC-MS/MS. In addition, potential indirect markers erythropoietin (EPO) and hematological parameters followed in the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) were analyzed during and after the period of use but showed no profound alterations. Only ABPS (abnormal blood profile score) reached (but did not exceed) the upper limit proposed by the ABP adaptive model just after the period of use of FG-4592. Altogether this case sends a warning for anti-doping laboratories which now must strengthen surveillance on HIF stabilizers and develop sensitive methods of detection for this new class of drugs.

Abstract
Targeting diseased cells is a challenging issue in both pharmacological and biological therapeutics. Gene therapy is emerging as a novel approach for treating rare diseases and for illnesses for which there is no other alternative. An important limitation of gene therapy has been the off-target effects and therefore efforts have been focused on increasing the specificity of gene transfer to the targeted organ. Here, we describe a promoter containing six nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) consensus sequences, which is as efficient as the cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter to drive expression in vascular smooth muscle cells both in vitro and in vivo. In contrast to the CMV promoter it is activated in a Ca(2+)-dependent manner after endoplasmic reticulum depletion and allows the transgene expression only in proliferative/diseased cells. Overexpression of sarco/endoplasmic reticulum (SR/ER) Ca(2+) ATPase 2a under the control of this NFAT promoter inhibits restenosis after angioplasty in rats. In conclusion, this promoter may be useful for gene therapy in vascular proliferative diseases and other diseases involving upregulation of the NFAT pathway.

Abstract
A collection of various Staphylococci was screened for their anti-Legionella activity. Nine of the tested strains were found to secrete anti-Legionella compounds. The culture supernatants of the strains, described in the literature to produce hemolytic peptides, were successfully submitted to a two step purification process. All the purified compounds, except one, corresponded to previously described hemolytic peptides and were not known for their anti-Legionella activity. By comparison of the minimal inhibitory concentrations, minimal permeabilization concentrations, decrease in the number of cultivable bacteria, hemolytic activity and selectivity, the purified peptides could be separated in two groups. First group, with warnericin RK as a leader, corresponds to the more hemolytic and bactericidal peptides. The peptides of the second group, represented by the PSMα from Staphylococcus epidermidis, appeared bacteriostatic and poorly hemolytic.

Abstract
The current qualitative research studied representations of illness posttreatment from a heart transplant group, a panic disorder group, and a tic disorder group. All three groups were preoccupied with perceptions about the impact of the illness, perception of self and the perception of how others view the ill person. The heart transplant group seem to adopt an active style of coping compared to the panic disorder group who presented a more passive, anticipatory mode of coping, and the tic group who were preoccupied with control over the perceptions of others. This qualitative information could help optimize adaptation strategies.
