A nano-lateral heterojunction of selenium-coated tellurium for infrared-band soliton fiber lasers

In this work, ultrafast fiber lasers based on 2D selenium-coated tellurium nanosheets in the infrared band are reported. 2D selenium-coated tellurium as a mode locker is shown with broadband saturable absorption and is capable of supporting ultra-stable pulse trains with several hundred-femtosecond pulse widths in the laser cavity. In particular, the as-fabricated 2D selenium-coated tellurium based fiber laser source operating in the communication band (1.5 μm) exhibits the vector pulse property, which supports the study of the vector soliton in ultrafast fiber lasers. The pulse duration of vector solitons is as short as 800 fs. The 2D selenium-coated tellurium is also available for a mode locked fiber laser operating at 1 μm. The laser oscillator has a pulse duration of several picoseconds and the pulse train is ultra-stable after an amplification to 100 mW, which is a promising seed source in the chirped-pulse amplification system in the future.

Engineering Mono-Chalcogen Nanomaterials for Omnipotent Anticancer Applications: Progress and Challenges

Belonging to the chalcogen group, the elements selenium (Se) and tellurium (Te) are located in Group VI-A of the periodic table. Zero-valent nanodimensioned Se (nano-Se) and Te (nano-Te) have displayed important biomedical applications in recent years. The past two decades have witnessed an explosion in novel cancer treatment strategies using nano-Se and nano-Te as aggressive weapons against tumors. Indeed, they are both inorganic nanomedicines that suppress tumor cell proliferation, diffusion, and metastasis. Abundant synthesis strategies for rational and precise surface decoration of nano-Se and nano-Te make them significant players in resisting cancers by means of powerful multi-modal treatment methods. This review focuses on the design and engineering of nano-Se- and nano-Te-based nanodelivery systems and their precise uses in cancer treatment. The corresponding anticancer molecular mechanisms of nano-Se and nano-Te are discussed in detail. Given their different photo-induced behaviors, the presence or absence of near infrared illumination is used as a defining characteristic when describing the anticancer applications of nano-Se and nano-Te. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of nano-Se and nano-Te are summarized and highlighted.

Analysis of the nanoscale phase characteristics of bitumen and bitumen in mastics and mixtures via AFM

A peak force quantitative nanomechanical mode (PF-QNM) can be used to simultaneously measure the topographical and nanomechanical property maps of samples. Currently, few studies used this mode to investigate the phase characteristics of bitumen in mastics and mixtures. The present study adopted hot-bitumen-pouring methods to prepare base bitumen surface samples and further used frozen-storage and low-temperature-cutting methods to prepare the internal samples of base bitumen in mastics and mixtures. Then, the atomic force microscopy (AFM) PF-QNM mode was used to collect data on the topographical and nanomechanical properties of bitumen and bitumen in mastics and mixtures. The results indicated that a typical bee structure only appeared on the bitumen surface. In contrast to the bitumen surface, the bitumen interior showed two phases, A- and B-phase, which were close in some properties to the periphase and paraphase of the bitumen surface, respectively. Furthermore, the addition of mineral aggregates affected the phase characteristics of the free bitumen interior. With an increase in the mineral aggregate surface area, the proportion of A-phase decreased and that of B-phase increased in the free bitumen interior. LAY DESCRIPTION: Bitumen is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons primarily applied for pavement materials. In the pavement industry, the bituminous mixture is a multilevel system, in which bitumen acts as a binder binding the aggregates and fillers to form bituminous mixture. Currently, atomic force microscopy (AFM), which is an advanced microscopy technology, has been used to investigate bitumen surface phase characteristics at the nanoscale. However, few studies have directly explored the nanoscale phase characteristics of bitumen in mastics or mixtures. Recently, with the progress of technology, a peak-force-quantitative-nanomechanical mode (PF-QNM) can be used to simultaneously measure the topographical and nanomechanical property maps of samples. Relying on this advanced mode, this study analyzed the nanoscale phase characteristics of the bitumen surface and interior, and further explored the effect of mineral aggregates on bitumen interior phase characteristics. In detail, we used hot-bitumen-pouring methods to prepare bitumen surface samples and adopted frozen-storage and low-temperature-cutting methods to prepare the internal samples of bitumen in mastics and mixtures. Subsequently, AFM PF-QNM mode was used to collect topographical and nanomechanical property maps of bitumen and bitumen in mastics and mixtures. The results indicated that the bitumen interior only consisted of two phases, where the A-phase presented low adhesion, deformation, and dissipation, while the B-phase presented high adhesion, deformation, and dissipation. A-phase and B-phase of the bitumen interior were close to the periphase and paraphase of the bitumen surface, respectively. Furthermore, the addition of mineral aggregates significantly affected the bitumen interior phase characteristics.

Eradication of tumor growth by delivering novel photothermal selenium-coated tellurium nanoheterojunctions

Two-dimensional nanomaterial-based photothermal therapy (PTT) is currently under intensive investigation as a promising approach toward curative cancer treatment. However, high toxicity, moderate efficacy, and low uniformity in shape remain critical unresolved issues that hamper their clinical application. Thus, there is an urgent need for developing versatile nanomaterials to meet clinical expectations. To achieve this goal, we developed a stable, highly uniform in size, and nontoxic nanomaterials made of tellurium-selenium (TeSe)-based lateral heterojunction. Systemic delivery of TeSe nanoparticles in mice showed highly specific accumulation in tumors relative to other healthy tissues. Upon exposure to light, TeSe nanoparticles nearly completely eradicated lung cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma in preclinical models. Consistent with tumor suppression, PTT altered the tumor microenvironment and induced immense cancer cell apoptosis. Together, our findings demonstrate an exciting and promising PTT-based approach for cancer eradication.

The Rise of 2D Photothermal Materials beyond Graphene for Clean Water Production

Water shortage is one of the most concerning global challenges in the 21st century. Solar-inspired vaporization employing photothermal nanomaterials is considered to be a feasible and green technology for addressing the water challenge by virtue of abundant and clean solar energy. 2D nanomaterials aroused considerable attention in photothermal evaporation-induced water production owing to their large absorption surface, strong absorption in broadband solar spectrum, and efficient photothermal conversion. Herein, the recent progress of 2D nanomaterials-based photothermal evaporation, mainly including emerging Xenes (phosphorene, antimonene, tellurene, and borophene) and binary-enes (MXenes and transition metal dichalcogenides), is reviewed. Then, the optimization strategies for higher evaporation performance are summarized in terms of modulation of the intrinsic photothermal performance of 2D nanomaterials and design of the complete evaporation system. Finally, the challenges and prospective of various kinds of 2D photothermal nanomaterials are discussed in terms of the photothermal performance, stability, environmental influence, and cost. One important principle is that solutions for water challenges should not introduce new environmental and social problems. This Review aims to highlight the role of 2D photothermal nanomaterials in solving water challenges and provides a viable scheme toward the practical use in photothermal materials selection, design, and evaporation systems building.

Gm6377 suppressed SP 2/0 xenograft tumor by down-regulating Myc transcription

PURPOSE

Disturbed process of B-cell differentiation into plasmablasts (PBs)/plasma cells (PCs) is involved in multiple myeloma (MM). New strategies will be required to eliminate the MM cell clone for a long-term disease control. Because of its PB-like characteristics, the mus musculus myeloma SP 2/0 cell line was used in this study to search novel targets for PBs/PCs.

METHODS/PATIENTS

Affymetrix microarrays and RNA-sequencing assays were used to search a novel different molecule (Gm6377) between PBs/PCs and mature B cells. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK8), flow cytometry (FACS), xenograft mouse model, and the luciferase reporter system were used to assess the effect of Gm6377 on SP 2/0 cell proliferation, cell cycle, tumor growth, and Myc promoter activation, respectively.

RESULTS

We found that B cells expressed a high level of Gm6377 mRNA, whereas Gm6377 mRNA was decreased in PCs. In addition, SP 2/0 cells also expressed low levels of Gm6377 mRNA. Critically, Gm6377 overexpression suppressed SP 2/0 cell proliferation but not cell cycle. Furthermore, Gm6377 overexpression suppressed tumor progression in the SP 2/0 xenograft mouse model. Finally, we found that Gm6377 suppressed SP 2/0 cell proliferation by reducing the activation of the Myc promoter.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that Gm6377 suppresses myeloma SP 2/0 cell growth by suppressing Myc. Thus, modulation of Gm6377 may be a potential therapeutic way to treat MM.

Two-Dimensional Borophene: Properties, Fabrication, and Promising Applications

Monoelemental two-dimensional (2D) materials (Xenes) aroused a tremendous attention in 2D science owing to their unique properties and extensive applications. Borophene, one emerging and typical Xene, has been regarded as a promising agent for energy, sensor, and biomedical applications. However, the production of borophene is still a challenge because bulk boron has rather intricate spatial structures and multiple chemical properties. In this review, we describe its excellent properties including the optical, electronic, metallic, semiconducting, photoacoustic, and photothermal properties. The fabrication methods of borophene are also presented including the bottom-up fabrication and the top-down fabrication. In the end, the challenges of borophene in the latest applications are presented and perspectives are discussed.

A fully inkjet-printed transparent humidity sensor based on a Ti3C2/Ag hybrid for touchless sensing of finger motion

Inkjet-printing was used to prepare a flexible and transparent humidity sensor with a Ti₃C₂/Ag hybrid as the humidity-sensitive film and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) as the adhesive layer. The sensor demonstrates an ultrahigh sensitivity (106 800%), a rapid response (80 ms), and excellent bending resistance. We demonstrate that an array of sensors can track moving fingers in a non-contact way and map the distance of the fingers away from the sensor surface. Therefore, our humidity sensors have great potential for novel human-machine interfacing such as touchless control of electronics and collision control between robots and humans in a cobot setting.

High-Performance Humidity Sensor Based on Urchin-Like Composite of Ti3C2 MXene-Derived TiO2 Nanowires

Humidity sensors have broad applications in health monitoring, environmental protection and human-machine interface, and robotics. Here, we developed a humidity sensor using alkali oxidation method to grow in situ TiO₂ nanowires on two-dimensional Ti₃C₂ MXene. With an order of magnitude larger surface area compared to pure Ti₃C₂ or TiO₂ materials, the urchin-like Ti₃C₂/TiO₂ composite demonstrates a record high sensitivity in a low relative humidity (RH) environment (∼280 pF/% RH from 7% RH to 33% RH). Complex impedance spectroscopy and Schottky junction theory were employed to understand the underlying sensing mechanisms of the Ti₃C₂/TiO₂ composite under various humidity conditions. We demonstrate the application of humidity sensors made with the Ti₃C₂/TiO₂ composite for noncontact detection of the presence of various liquids as well as human fingers.

MiR-205 enhances cisplatin sensitivity of glioma cells by targeting E2F1

OBJECTIVE

miR-205 has been previously identified as a diagnostic and prognostic factor in glioma. However, its exact functions in glioma remain unclear. The current research aimed to decipher the role of miR-205 in the development of cisplatin resistance in glioma cells.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

miR-205 expressions in both cisplatin sensitive and resistant cell lines were compared by the Real-time PCR method. The dose-response to cisplatin of U87/DDP cells was determined by MTT assay. Cell cycle and apoptosis were determined by flow cytometry, caspase 3/7 activity assay and Western blot assay. The direct repression of E2F1 by miR-205 was confirmed by luciferase assay and Western blot assay.

RESULTS

miR-205 expression was decreased in cisplatin resistant glioma cell lines, and cisplatin treatment led to a decrease of miR-205 in glioma cells. Overexpression of miR-205 in U87/DDP restored its cisplatin sensitivity by enhancing apoptosis and G1/S cell cycle arrest; notably, all these effects were then partially abrogated by E2F1 overexpression. Luciferase assay and Western blot assay confirmed E2F1 as the direct target of miR-205 in U87/DDP cells.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that down-regulation of miR-205 confers the cisplatin resistance in glioma cells via upregulation of E2F1. It might serve as a candidate for glioma therapy.

Engineering Lateral Heterojunction of Selenium-Coated Tellurium Nanomaterials toward Highly Efficient Solar Desalination

Herein, a core-shell tellurium-selenium (Te-Se) nanomaterial with polymer-tailed and lateral heterojunction structures is developed as a photothermal absorber in a bionic solar-evaporation system. It is further revealed that the amorphous Se shell surrounds the crystalline Te core, which not only protects the Te phase from oxidation but also serves as a natural barrier to life entities. The core (Te)-shell (Se) configuration thus exhibits robust stability enhanced by 0.05 eV per Se atom and excellent biocompatibility. Furthermore, high energy efficiencies of 90.71 ± 0.37% and 86.14 ± 1.02% and evaporation rates of 12.88 ± 0.052 and 1.323 ± 0.015 kg m-2 h-1 are obtained under 10 and 1 sun for simulated seawater, respectively. Importantly, no salting out is observed in salt solutions, and the collected water under natural light irradiation possesses extremely low ion concentrations of Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ relative to real seawater. Considering the tunable electronic structures, biocompatibilities, and modifiable broadband absorption of the solar spectrum of lateral heterojunction nanomaterials of Te-Se, the way is paved to engineering 2D semiconductor materials with supporting 3D porous hydrophilic materials for application in solar desalination, wastewater treatment, and biomedical ventures.

Lead monoxide: a promising two-dimensional layered material for applications in nonlinear photonics in the infrared band

Lead monoxide (PbO), a novel few-layer two-dimensional (2D) material, was theoretically predicted to have an excellent optical response. Herein, the nonlinear optical response of PbO in the infrared region was experimentally investigated. The feasibility of PbO nanosheets as an effective optical saturable absorber was experimentally verified for the first time. Based on the excellent nonlinear optical characteristics, 2D PbO was fabricated as a passive mode locker by depositing onto a fiber patch cord and by decorating on a microfiber, both of which were successfully applied in fiber lasers for the passive mode locking operation. The mode locking pulses of the fiber laser were as short as 650 fs at 1.5 μm. A pulse duration of 5.47 ps with a 1 μm fiber laser was also experimentally verified. Finally, a PbO-decorated microfiber was fabricated as an optical thresholder that can enhance the SNR of a 1 GHz signal up to 6 dB. This finding might facilitate the development of nonlinear photonic devices with high stability and their practical applications in the future.

Two-dimensional tellurium-polymer membrane for ultrafast photonics

Tellurium (Te) exhibits many intriguing properties including thermoelectricity, photoelectricity, piezoelectricity, and photoconductivity, and is widely used in detectors, sensors, transistors, and energy devices. Herein, ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) Te nanosheets were fabricated using a facile and cost-effective liquid-phase exfoliation method. Mixing the as-prepared 2D Te nanosheets with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) provided a uniform 2D Te/PVP membrane. The 2D Te/PVP membrane exhibited excellent mechanical properties, thermal properties, and stability. The nonlinear optical properties of the membrane were characterized over the spectral range of 800 to 1550 nm using open-aperture Z-scan technology. A large nonlinear absorption coefficient of about 10-1 cm GW-1 over the whole tested wavelength range demonstrated the efficient broadband saturable absorptivity of the 2D Te/PVP membrane. Using the 2D Te/PVP membrane as a saturable absorber (SA), a highly stable femtosecond laser with a pulse duration of 829 fs in the communication band was obtained. This work highlights the promise of 2D Te/PVP membranes in ultrafast photonics and Te as a new 2D material for use in photonic devices such as all-optical modulators, switches, and thresholds.

pH-Responsive Dual Drug-Loaded Nanocarriers Based on Poly (2-Ethyl-2-Oxazoline) Modified Black Phosphorus Nanosheets for Cancer Chemo/Photothermal Therapy

Synergistic cancer therapy, such as those combining chemotherapeutic and photothermal methods, has stronger treatment effect than that of individual ones. However, it is challenging to efficiently deliver nanocarriers into tumor cells to elevate intracellular drug concentration. Herein, we developed an effective pH-responsive and dual drug co-delivery platform for combined chemo/photothermal therapy. An anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) was first loaded onto the surface of black phosphorus (BP). With poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (PEOz) ligand conjugated onto the polydopamine (PDA) coated BP nanosheets, targeted long circulation and cellular uptake in vivo was significantly improved. With another anticancer drug bortezomib (BTZ) loaded onto the surface of the nanocapsule, the platform can co-deliver two different drugs. The surface charge of the nanocapsule was reversed from negative to positive at the tumor extracellular pH (∼6.8), ionizing the tertiary amide groups along the PEOz chain, thus facilitating the cell internalization of the nanocarrier. The cytotoxicity therapeutic effect of this nanoplatform was further augmented under near-infrared laser irradiation. As such, our DOX-loaded BP@PDA-PEOz-BTZ platform is very promising to synergistic cancer therapy.

Ultrathin GeSe Nanosheets: From Systematic Synthesis to Studies of Carrier Dynamics and Applications for a High-Performance UV-Vis Photodetector

Owing to the attractive energy band properties, a black phosphorus (BP)-analogue semiconductor, germanium selenide (GeSe), shows a promising potential applied for optoelectronic devices. Herein, ultrathin GeSe nanosheets were systematically prepared via a facile liquid-phase exfoliation approach, with controllable nanoscale thickness. Different from BP, ultrathin GeSe nanosheets exhibit good stability under both liquid and ambient conditions. Besides, its ultrafast carrier dynamics was probed by transient absorption spectroscopy. We showed that the GeSe nanosheet-based photodetector exhibits excellent photoresponse behaviors ranging from ultraviolet (UV) to the visible regime, with high responsivity and low dark current. Furthermore, the detective ability of such a device can be effectively modulated by varying the applied bias potential, light intensity, and concentration of the electrolyte. Generally, our present contribution could not only supply fundamental knowledge of a GeSe nanosheet-based photoelectrochemical (PEC)-type device, but also offer guidance to extend other possible semiconductor materials in the application of the PEC-type photodetector.

Photothermal cancer immunotherapy by erythrocyte membrane-coated black phosphorus formulation

Basal-like breast cancer exhibits a triple-negative phenotype and has a poor prognosis, even with traditional chemical and anti-human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER) treatments. However, the high mutation rate of this obstinate cancer type renders it suitable for immunotherapy. Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a high-efficiency method for inducing tumor neoantigen release in situ, which has great potential for use in cancer immunotherapy. Here, we prepared a biomimetic black phosphorus quantum dot (BPQDs) formulation to induce breast cancer cell apoptosis in situ by near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation to mobilize the immune system to eliminate the residual and metastatic cancer cells. Erythrocyte membranes (RMs) were used to coat the BPQDs, forming a BPQD-RM nanovesicle (BPQD-RMNV) biomimetic formulation that exhibited a long circulation time and tumor accumulation in vivo. The basal-like 4T1 breast tumor underwent apoptosis and necrosis with the irradiation and recruited dendritic cells (DCs) to capture the tumor antigens in vivo. Furthermore, programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) antibody (aPD-1) was employed to prevent the CD8⁺ T cells from exhaustion. Notably, BPQD-RMNV-mediated PTT combined with aPD-1 treatment significantly delayed residual and metastatic tumor growth in vivo. Hence, BPQD-RMNV-mediated PTT combined with immune checkpoint blockade antibody increased the infiltration and activity of CD8⁺ T cells in the tumor, which directly restrained basal-like breast tumor growth in vivo.

The Src homology and collagen A (ShcA) adaptor protein may participate in the pathogenesis of membranous lupus nephritis

The Src homology and collagen A (ShcA) adaptor protein that binds to tyrosine kinase receptors. ShcA plays a role in insulin signaling, stress resistance and energy metabolism. The 66-kDa Src homology 2 domain-containing protein (p66shc) belongs to the ShcA family and has been associated with reactive oxygen species (ROS); increased ROS is involved in the pathology of lupus nephritis (LN). However, whether ShcA can act as a biomarker for oxidative injury in LN is unknown. This study is aimed to investigate the ShcA expression in kidney tissues from patients presenting with LN and the association between ShcA expression and clinical parameters. Renal biopsy tissues were obtained from 62 LN, 20 primary membranous nephropathy (MN) and 10 other secondary MN patients. ShcA was measured by immunofluorescence. The expression of ShcA in the membranous lupus nephritis (class V) group showed a higher trend but there were no significant differences compared with pure mesangial disease (class II) and proliferative (Class III/IV) lupus nephritis. ShcA deposits were negative in primary and other secondary MN. ShcA might act as a new biomarker and a diagnostic tool to identify membranous lupus nephritis with other MN.

Two-Dimensional MXene (Ti3C2)-Integrated Cellulose Hydrogels: Toward Smart Three-Dimensional Network Nanoplatforms Exhibiting Light-Induced Swelling and Bimodal Photothermal/Chemotherapy Anticancer Activity

Two-dimensional (2D) MXenes have recently been shown to be promising for applications in anticancer photothermal therapy (PTT), owing to their outstanding photothermal performance. However, as with the other inorganic 2D nanomaterials, the MXene-based nanoplatforms lack the appropriate biocompatibility and stability in physiological conditions, targeting capability, and controlled release of drug, for cancer therapy. Fabricating a smart MXene-based nanoplatform for the treatment of cancer therefore remains a challenge. In this work, composite hydrogels based on cellulose and Ti₃C₂ MXene, were synthesized for the first time. We have shown that the cellulose/MXene composite hydrogels possess rapid response near-infrared-stimulated characteristics, which present as a continuous dynamic process in water. As a result, when loaded with the anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX), the cellulose/MXene hydrogels are capable of significantly accelerating the DOX release. This behavior is attributed to the expansion of the pores within the three-dimensional cellulose-based networks, triggered by illumination with an 808 nm light. Capitalizing on their excellent photothermal performance and controlled, sustained release of DOX, the cellulose/MXene hydrogels are utilized as a multifunctional nanoplatform for tumor treatment by intratumoral injection. The results showed that the combination of PTT and prolonged adjuvant chemotherapy delivered using this nanoplatform was highly efficient for instant tumor destruction and for suppressing tumor relapse, demonstrating the potential of the nanoplatform for application in cancer therapy. Our work not only opens the door for the fabrication of smart MXene-based nanocomposites, along with their promising application against cancer, but also paves the way for the development of other inorganic 2D composites for applications in biomedicine.

Conceptually Novel Black Phosphorus/Cellulose Hydrogels as Promising Photothermal Agents for Effective Cancer Therapy

Black phosphorus (BP) has recently emerged as an intriguing photothermal agent in photothermal therapy (PTT) against cancer by virtue of its high photothermal efficiency, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. However, naked BP is intrinsically characterized by easy oxidation (or natural degradation) and sedimentation inside the tumor microenvironment, leading to a short-term therapeutic and inhomogeneous photothermal effect. Development of BP-based nanocomposites for PTT against cancer therefore remains challenging. The present work demonstrates that green and injectable composite hydrogels based on cellulose and BP nanosheets (BPNSs) are of great efficiency for PTT against cancer. The resultant cellulose/BPNS-based hydrogel possesses 3D networks with irregular micrometer-sized pores and thin, strong cellulose-formed walls and exhibits an excellent photothermal response, enhanced stability, and good flexibility. Importantly, this hydrogel nanoplatform is totally harmless and biocompatible both in vivo and in vitro. This work may facilitate the development of BP-polymer-based photothermal agents in the form of hydrogels for biomedical-related clinic applications.

Facile fabrication and characterization of two-dimensional bismuth(iii) sulfide nanosheets for high-performance photodetector applications under ambient conditions

Two-dimensional (2D) bismuth(iii) sulfide (Bi₂S₃) nanosheets as non-toxic graphene-like nanomaterials were successfully fabricated by a facile liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) method. A robust photodetector employing a Bi₂S₃ nanosheet film has been fabricated for the first time via a facile fabrication process on an ITO-coated glass. UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopy techniques were carried out and they confirmed the inherent optical and physical properties of Bi₂S₃ nanosheets. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) measurements demonstrate that a significantly higher photocurrent density (42 μA cm^-2) and enhanced photoresponsivity (210 μA W^-1), at a lower bias potential in alkaline solution, of the Bi₂S₃ nanosheet-based photodetector are achieved, compared with those of other 2D nanomaterial-based photodetectors under light irradiation. Furthermore, the as-prepared Bi₂S₃ nanosheet-based photodetector not only exhibits an appropriate capacity of self-driven broadband and high-performance photoresponse but also displays strong long-term stability of the ON/OFF switching behaviour without any external protection in alkaline solutions. Because of facile synthesis via a LPE method, a higher photocurrent density and photoresponsivity, self-driven performance and long-term stability of the Bi₂S₃ nanosheet-based photodetector at a lower bias potential in alkaline solutions, the present work can provide fundamental acknowledgement of the high performance of this new kind of PEC-type 2D nanosheet-based photodetector.

Novel concept of the smart NIR-light-controlled drug release of black phosphorus nanostructure for cancer therapy

A biodegradable drug delivery system (DDS) is one the most promising therapeutic strategies for cancer therapy. Here, we propose a unique concept of light activation of black phosphorus (BP) at hydrogel nanostructures for cancer therapy. A photosensitizer converts light into heat that softens and melts drug-loaded hydrogel-based nanostructures. Drug release rates can be accurately controlled by light intensity, exposure duration, BP concentration, and hydrogel composition. Owing to sufficiently deep penetration of near-infrared (NIR) light through tissues, our BP-based system shows high therapeutic efficacy for treatment of s.c. cancers. Importantly, our drug delivery system is completely harmless and degradable in vivo. Together, our work proposes a unique concept for precision cancer therapy by external light excitation to release cancer drugs. If these findings are successfully translated into the clinic, millions of patients with cancer will benefit from our work.
